Distribution characteristics, source analysis and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments of Kuye River: a river in a typical energy and chemical industry zone.

This study systematically analyzed the distribution characteristics, sources, and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Kuye River sediments, located in an energy and chemical industry base in northern Shaanxi, China. The results that revealed the concentrations of 16 PAHs in the sediment ranged from 1090.04 to 32,175.68ng∙g-1dw, with the four-ring PAHs accounting for the highest proportion. Positive matrix factorization analysis (PMF) revealed the main sources of PAHs as incomplete fossil fuel combustion, biomass combustion, and traffic emissions. The total toxic equivalent concentration of BaP, risk quotient, and lifetime carcinogenic risk of PAHs suggested moderate to high contamination of PAHs in the area. The higher incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk (ILCR) indicated that PAH ingestion was the primary route of impact on public health, with children potentially being more susceptible to PAH exposure. This study can provide valuable theoretical support for implementing pollution prevention measures and ecological restoration strategies for rivers in energy and chemical industry areas.

Toxicity source apportionment of fugitive dust PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using multilayer perceptron neural network analysis in Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban fugitive dust, known for their toxicity and ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), are a major public health concern. This study assessed the spatial distribution and health risks of 15 PAHs in construction dust (CD) and road dust (RD) samples collected from June to November 2021 over the cities of Tongchuan (TC), Baoji (BJ), Xianyang (XY), and Xi'an (XA) in the Guanzhong Plain, China. The average concentration of ΣPAHs in RD was 39.5 ± 20.0 μg g−1, approximately twice as much as in CD. Four-ring PAHs from fossil fuels combustion accounted for the highest proportion of ΣPAHs in fugitive dust over all four cities. Health-related indicators including benzo(a)pyrene toxic equivalency factors (BAPTEQ), oxidative potential (OP), and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) all presented higher risk in RD than those in CD. The multilayer perceptron neural network algorithm quantified that vehicular and industrial emissions contributed 86 % and 61 % to RD and CD BAPTEQ, respectively. For OP, the sources of biomass and coal combustion were the key generator which accounted for 31–54 %. These findings provide scientific evidence for the direct efforts toward decreasing the health risks of fugitive dust in Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration, China.

Occurrence and ecological risk of PAHs in urban road runoff in Beijing.

The occurrence and ecological risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different types of urban road runoff in Beijing during two typical rainfall events were studied. The average concentration of PAHs in road runoff particulate was in the order of Guanyuanqiao Road (ring road, 15,175 ng/L) > Huayuanqiao Road (primary road, 4,792 ng/L) > Dongcheng Alley (alley, 4,774 ng/L) > Nansihuan Viaduct (viaduct, 770 ng/L), much higher than dissolved PAHs. The total concentration of ∑16PAHs decreased with runoff scouring. Rainfall conditions and the accumulation of PAHs in the early rainfall period show a significant impact on PAHs pollution. The event mean concentration range of PAHs is 674-21,596 ng/L, following in the order of ring road > primary road > alley > viaduct. The proportion of four-ring PAHs was the highest. The first flush effect of PAHs is found in both rainfall events, and the effect of different ring PAHs is relatively similar. The content of PAHs is positively correlated with the amount of total organic carbon and suspended substance in runoff (r2> 0.72). The ecological risk assessment indicated that PAHs in road runoff except viaduct road corresponded to high risk.

Impact of Atmospheric Conditions and Source Identification of Gaseous Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) during a Smoke Haze Period in Upper Southeast Asia.

Gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured in northern Thailand. No previous studies have provided data on gaseous PAHs until now, so this study determined the gaseous PAHs during two sampling periods for comparison, and then they were used to assess the correlation with meteorological conditions, other pollutants, and their sources. The total concentrations of 8-PAHs (i.e., NAP, ACY, ACE, FLU, PHE, ANT, FLA, and PYR) were 125 ± 22 ng m-3 and 111 ± 21 ng m-3, with NAP being the most pronounced at 67 ± 18 ng m-3 and 56 ± 17 ng m-3, for morning and afternoon, respectively. High temperatures increase the concentrations of four-ring PAHs, whereas humidity and pressure increase the concentrations of two- and three-ring PAHs. Moreover, gaseous PAHs were estimated to contain more toxic derivatives such as nitro-PAH, which ranged from 0.02 ng m-3 (8-Nitrofluoranthene) to 10.46 ng m-3 (1-Nitronaphthalene). Therefore, they could be one of the causes of local people's health problems that have not been reported previously. Strong correlations of gaseous PAHs with ozone indicated that photochemical oxidation influenced four-ring PAHs. According to the Pearson correlation, diagnostic ratios, and principal component analysis, mixed sources including coal combustion, biomass burning, and vehicle emissions were the main sources of these pollutants.

Impact of lignin constituents on the bacterial community and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon co-metabolism in an agricultural soil

Lignin is a complex biopolymer comprising phenolic monomers with different degrees of methoxylation and may potentially enhance the degradation of soil pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through co-metabolism. However, the contribution of lignin constituents, including phenolic and methoxy subunits, to PAH biodegradation remains unclear. Here, p-hydroxybenzoate (pHBA), vanillate and methanol were selected to simulate phenolic units and methoxy groups of lignin. Soil microcosms receiving these compounds were established to evaluate their regulation on the bacterial community and PAH co-metabolism. There were different effects of different components on the biodegradation of a four-ring PAH, benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), as characterized using an isotopic tracer. Only vanillate significantly stimulated BaA mineralization to CO2, with pHBA and methanol leading to no appreciable change in the allocation of BaA in soil compartments. The lignin constituents had differential impacts on the soil bacterial community, with substantial enrichment of methylotrophs occurring in methanol-supplemented microcosms. Both vanillate and pHBA selected several aromatic degraders. Vanillate caused additional enrichment of methylotrophs, suggesting structure-dependent stimulation of bacterial functional guilds by lignin monomers. Compared with its constituents, lignin produced more extensive responses in terms of bacterial diversity and composition and the fate of BaA. However, it was difficult to link BaA co-metabolism to any specific bacterial taxa in the presence of lignin or its subunits. The results indicate that the co-metabolism effects of lignin may not be directly associated with phenolic or methoxy metabolism but with its regulation of the soil microbiome.

The Health Risk and Source Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Soil of Industrial Cities in India

Industrial areas play an important role in the urban ecosystem. Industrial site environmental quality is linked to human health. Soil samples from two different cities in India, Jamshedpur and Amravati, were collected and analyzed to assess the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in industrial areas and their potential health risks. The total concentration of 16 PAHs in JSR (Jamshedpur) varied from 1662.90 to 10,879.20 ng/g, whereas the concentration ranged from 1456.22 to 5403.45 ng/g in the soil of AMT (Amravati). The PAHs in the samples were dominated by four-ring PAHs, followed by five-ring PAHs, and a small percentage of two-ring PAHs. The ILCR (incremental lifetime cancer risk) of the soil of Amravati was lower compared to that of Jamshedpur. The risk due to PAH exposure for children and adults was reported to be in the order of ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation while for adolescents it was dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation in Jamshedpur. In contrast, in the soil of Amravati, the PAH exposure path risk for children and adolescents were the same and showed the following order: dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation while for the adulthood age group, the order was ingestion > dermal contact > inhalation. The diagnostic ratio approach was used to assess the sources of PAHs in various environmental media. The PAH sources were mainly dominated by coal and petroleum/oil combustion. As both the study areas belong to industrial sites, the significant sources were industrial emissions, followed by traffic emissions, coal combustion for domestic livelihood, as well as due to the geographical location of the sampling sites. The results of this investigation provide novel information for contamination evaluation and human health risk assessment in PAH-contaminated sites in India.

Emission factors for a biofuel impacted fleet in South America's largest metropolitan area

The Metropolitan Area of São Paulo (MASP) is among the largest urban areas in the Southern Hemisphere. Vehicular emissions are of great concern in metropolitan areas and MASP is unique due to the use of biofuels on a large scale (sugarcane ethanol and biodiesel). In this work, tunnel measurements were employed to assess vehicle emissions and to calculate emission factors (EFs) for heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles (HDVs and LDVs). The EFs were determined for particulate matter (PM) and its chemical compounds. The EFs obtained for 2018 were compared with previous tunnel experiments performed in the same area. An overall trend of reduction of fine and coarse PM, organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) EFs for both LDVs and HDVs was observed if compared to those observed in past years, suggesting the effectiveness of vehicular emissions control policies implemented in Brazil. A predominance of Fe, Cu, Al, and Ba emissions was observed for the LDV fleet in the fine fraction. Cu presented higher emissions than two decades ago, which was associated with the increased use of ethanol fuel in the region. For HDVs, Zn and Pb were mostly emitted in the fine mode and were linked with lubricating oil emissions from diesel vehicles. A predominance in the emission of three- and four-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for HDVs and five-ring PAHs for LDVs agreed with what was observed in previous studies. The use of biofuels may explain the lower PAH emissions for LDVs (including carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene) compared to those observed in other countries. The tendency observed was that LDVs emitted higher amounts of carcinogenic species. The use of these real EFs in air quality modeling resulted in more accurate simulations of PM concentrations, showing the importance of updating data with real-world measurements.

Inventory, source and health risk assessment of nitrated and parent PAHs in agricultural soils over a rural river in Southeast China

Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) have become a concerning topic because of their widespread occurrence and carcinogenicity. However, studies on NPAHs in soils, especially in agricultural soils, are still limited. In this study, a systematic monitoring campaign of 15 NPAHs and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was performed in agricultural soils from the Taige Canal basin in 2018, which is a typical agricultural activity area of the Yangtze River Delta. The total concentration of NPAHs and PAHs ranged from 14.4 to 85.5 ng g−1 and 118–1108 ng g−1, respectively. Among the target analytes, 1,8-dinitropyrene and fluoranthene were the most predominant congeners accounting for 35.0% of ∑15NPAHs and 17.2% of ∑16PAHs, respectively. Four-ring NPAHs and PAHs were predominant, followed by three-ring NPAHs and PAHs. NPAHs and PAHs had a similar spatial distribution pattern with high concentrations in the northeastern Taige Canal basin. The soil mass inventory of ∑16PAHs and ∑15NPAHs was evaluated to be 31.7 and 2.55 metric tons, respectively. Total organic carbon had a significant impact on the distribution of PAHs in soils. The correlation between PAH congeners in agricultural soils was higher than that between NPAH congeners. Based on diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression model, vehicle exhaust emission, coal combustion, and biomass combustion were the predominant sources of these NPAHs and PAHs. According to the lifetime incremental carcinogenic risk model, the health risk posed by NPAHs and PAHs in agricultural soils of the Taige Canal basin was virtually negligible. The total health risk in soils of the Taige Canal basin to adults was slightly higher than that to children.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air, foliage, and litter in a subtropical forest: Spatioseasonal variations, partitioning, and litter-PAH degradation

Forest canopies play a vital role in scavenging airborne semi-volatile organic compounds. The present study measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the understory air (at two heights), foliage, and litterfall in a subtropical rainforest (the Dinghushan mountain) in southern China. ∑17PAH concentrations in the air ranged from 2.75 to 44.0 ng/m3 (mean = 8.91 ng/m3), showing a spatial variation depending on the forest canopy coverage. Vertical distributions of the understory air concentrations also indicated PAH inputs from the above-canopy air. The concentrations of PAHs in fresh litter (with a mean of 261 ± 163 ng/g dry weight (dw)) were slightly lower than those in the foliage (362 ± 291 ng/g dw). Unlike the stable air PAH concentrations for most of the time of the year, the temporal variations of foliage and litter concentrations were remarkable but generally similar. Higher or comparable leaf/litter-air partition coefficients (KLA) in fresh litter compared with living KLA in leaves suggest that the forest litter layer is an efficient storage media for PAHs. Degradation of three-ring PAHs in litter under the field conditions follows first-order kinetics (R2 = 0.81), while the degradation is moderate for four-ring PAHs and insignificant for five- and six-ring PAHs. The yearly net cumulative deposition of PAHs through forest litterfall in the whole Dinghushan forest area over the sampling year was about 1.1 kg, 46% of the initial deposition (2.4 kg). This spatial variations study provides the results of in-field degradation of litter PAHs and makes a quantitative assessment of the litter deposition of PAHs, deducing their residence dynamics in the litter layer in a subtropical rainforest.

Human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the atmosphere of an agricultural area of central Chile and inhalation cancer risk assessments

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent toxic substances prone to long-range atmospheric transport. Even in low concentrations, environmental exposure to PAHs can impact human health. In this study we aimed to i) investigate the occurrence of 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (∑15PAHs), from August 2016 to January 2018, in the atmosphere of Molina, using polyurethane foam disks (PAS-PUF) in central Chile; and ii) perform deterministic and probabilistic (using Monte Carlo simulations) inhalation cancer risk assessments.Gas chromatography and tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC- MS/MS) measured target PAHs. Results showed ∑15PAHs ranging from 2 ng m-3 to 108 ng m-3, with four-ring PAHs as the prevalent compounds, including phenanthrene (44%) and fluoranthene (24%). Winter season showed the highest PAH levels (increasing factor up to ∼8 times). PAHs diagnostic ratios showed the prevalence of pyrogenic combustion (winter) and petrogenic combustion (summer). Lifetime cancer risk assessments, using BaP-eq values, indicated an increased cancer risk for the exposed population considering different risk assessment approaches. Younger individuals were the most affected by an increased cancer risk at all sampling sites. The Monte Carlo probabilistic assessment indicated that infants and toddlers could be exposed to PAH air concentrations exceeding the cancer risk threshold in over 94% of the simulations. The coldest months in the studied region are critical for human exposure and health risk due to intense wood combustion. Indoor air can be even more relevant due to the chronic inhalation of the smoke and associated chemicals.

Spatiotemporal distribution, sources apportionment and ecological risks of PAHs: a study in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River.

This study investigated the sources, contamination and ecological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) based on their spatiotemporal distribution in aquatic environment in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River (WYR). The fugacity ratio evaluation indicated that sediment was secondary release sources of two- and three-ring PAHs and sinks of four- and five-ring PAHs. The total concentrations of PAHs (Σ16PAHs) ranged from 2.51 to 102.5ng/L in water with the dominant contribution of 47.8% by two-ring PAHs. Σ16PAHs in sediments varied from 5.90 to 2926ng/g with the contribution of 35.4% by four-ring PAHs. The higher levels of PAHs occurred around developed industrial areas during the wet season, which was related to local industrial emissions and influenced by rainfall/runoff. Annual flux of Σ16PAHs was estimated of 28.77t. The PMF model analysis revealed that petroleum and industrial emissions were the dominant sources in water accounting for 58.5% of the total pollution, although traffic emission was the main source for sediment accounting for 44.6%. Risk assessments showed that PAHs in water were at low risks, whereas about 44% of the sediments were identified as medium risks. Therefore, energy structure adjustment and further implement of regulation and monitoring are necessary to reduce PAH emissions.

Comprehensive characterization of particulate intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs) from heavy-duty diesel vehicles using two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Abstract. Tailpipe emissions from three heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs), complying with varying emission standards and installed with diverse aftertreatment technologies, are collected at a certified chassis dynamometer laboratory. The HDDV-emitted intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compound (I/SVOC) emission and the gas–particle partitioning of the I/SVOCs are investigated. Over 4000 compounds are identified and grouped into 21 categories. The dominant compound groups of particulate I/SVOCs are alkanes and phenolic compounds. For HDDVs without aftertreatment devices, i.e., diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) and diesel particulate filters (DPFs), the emitted I/SVOCs partition dramatically into the gas phase (accounting for ∼ 93 % of the total I/SVOC mass), with a few exceptions: hopane, four-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH4rings), and five-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH5rings). For HDDVs with DPFs and DOCs, the particulate fractions are reduced to a negligible level (i.e., less than 2 %). Nevertheless, 50 % of the total two-ring PAH mass is detected in the particle phase, which is much higher than the high-molecular-weight PAHs, arising from the positive sampling artifact of quartz filter absorbing organic vapors. The positive sampling artifact of quartz filter absorbing organic vapors is clearly observed, and uncertainties are discussed and quantified. Particulate I/SVOCs at low-speed, middle-speed, and high-speed phases are collected and analyzed separately. The emission factor (EF) distribution of the speciated organic aerosol (OA) on a two-dimensional volatility basis set (2D-VBS) space reveals that the fractions of OA with oxygen to carbon (O : C) ratios > 0.3 (0.4, 0.5) are 18.2 % (11.5 %, 9.5 %), 23 % (15.4 %, 13.6 %), and 29.1 % (20.6 %, 19.1 %) at the low-speed, middle-speed, and high-speed stages. These results help to resolve complex organic mixtures and trace the evolution of OA.

Degradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Co-Culture of Pleurotus ostreatus Florida and Azospirillum brasilense

Bacterial-fungal interactions are important in the functioning of natural ecosystems. We examined possible synergistic or antagonistic effects during the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by a fungal–bacterial co-culture. Bacteria and fungi were grown in a liquid nutrient medium supplemented with PAH substrates. The degradation of PAHs and the identification of metabolites were checked by HPLC. Enzyme activities were spectrophotometrically measured with test substrates. Compared to monocultures, the co-culture yielded higher mycelium dry weights and higher numbers of bacterial colony-forming units (CFUs). Both organisms and their co-culture transformed three- and four-ring PAHs into the corresponding quinones. The degradation of PAHs was accompanied by the production of fungal extracellular laccase and versatile peroxidase, whose activities were higher in the co-culture than they were in the monocultures. The presence of exogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) boosted PAH degradation and enzyme production. The xylotrophic basidiomycete Pleurotus ostreatus Florida and the plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium Azospirillum brasilense exerted a positive mutual effect, including increases in mycelium dry weight, number of CFUs, degradation of PAHs, and production of fungal extracellular enzymes. IAA may be a factor in the interactions of P. ostreatus Florida with A. brasilense.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface soils of tropical reef islands in China under external plant and soil introduction: Occurrence, sources, risks, and relationships with soil properties, vegetation cover, and soil source

This study explored the levels, sources, and risks of PAHs in soils from Yongle Atoll (YLA) and Xuande Atoll (XDA) of the Xisha Islands (XSIs) in the South China Sea, China, under different vegetation cover types and soil sources. The results clearly showed that the levels of 16 US EPA priority PAHs (Σ16PAHs) are relatively low in XDA and YLA, with concentrations ranging from not detected (ND) to 151 ng/g (average 15.7 ng/g) and ND to 5.8 ng/g (average 2.1 ng/g), respectively. Three- and four-ring PAHs (62.3% and 53.8%) were widely distributed in YLA and XDA. The average concentration of Σ16PAHs in soils with shrub cover was 1.4, 1.8, 4.8, and 5.0 times higher than that in soils with herbaceous cover, vegetable cover, arbor cover, and no plant cover, respectively. Source analysis using binary diagnostic ratios and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model suggested that PAHs have similar sources (gasoline/coal combustion, coke production, and biomass combustion), but different contributions in native soil and introduced soil. Moreover, diesel-related vehicular emission was identified to be an additional source of PAHs in native soil. Pearson's correlations revealed strong relationships between PAHs and organic matter or total organic carbon. The cancer risk of PAHs varied among different vegetation cover types and soil sources, following the orders herbaceous cover > vegetable cover > shrub cover > arbor cover > no plant cover and introduced soil > mixed soil > native soil. Nevertheless, the risk remained lower than the risk threshold (10−6), suggesting low carcinogenesis risk in the two atolls. Our findings provide new evidence for the introduction of external vegetation/soil acting as a driver of changes in the characteristics of PAHs in islands, and also underline the negligibility of the PAH increase in soils in the South China Sea, China, from the perspective of health hazards.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban and industrial soils of Kerman, the largest city in southeast of Iran: status, source apportionment, ecotoxicology, and health risk assessment

ABSTRACT In this study, pollution level, distribution, toxicity, molecular composition, probable sources as well as health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban and industrial soils of Kerman metropolis were investigated. Kerman is a fast-growing city and a fine example of an arid city in a developing country. For this purpose, concentrations of 16 individual PAHs in 30 samples taken from the city soils and its industrial zones were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The ∑PAHs concentration in urban soil samples varied from 26.1 to 902.8 μg/kg, with the mean and median of 302.6 and 148.4 µg/kg, respectively. In comparison, ∑PAHs in industrial soils ranged from 26.8to 251.9 μg/kg, with the mean and median values of 65.9 and 42.9 µg/kg, respectively. Four-ring PAHs comprise the dominant compounds in urban soils, whereas, two- and three-ring PAHs proved to be the most abundant compounds in industrial soils. Source apportionment was conducted using ring classification, diagnostic ratios, PCA, and multilinear regression (MLR). Also, human health risk assessment was undertaken through employing US EPA standard statistical models. This survey revealed that PAH pollution in urban soils originates mainly from fossil fuel combustion and in industrial soils from petrogenic sources. On the whole, in the Kerman environment, the shares of petroleum combustion, natural gas combustion, and petrogenic sources were 45.32%, 34%, and 20.68% respectively. Based on this study, the ecological risk of PAHs was low-to-moderate, and incremental lifetime cancer risk for children and adults were 1.35 × 10−4 and 1.04 × 10−4 respectively, indicating rather high risks.

Anaerobic Degradation of Naphthalene and Pyrene by Sulfate-Reducing Cultures Enriched from Former Manufactured Gas Plant Soil

Biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under completely anaerobic sulfate-reducing conditions is an energetically challenging process. To date, anaerobic degradations of only two-ringed naphthalene and three-ringed phenanthrene by sediment-free and enriched sulfate-reducing bacteria have been reported. In this study, sulfate-reducing enrichment cultures capable of degrading naphthalene and four-ringed PAH, pyrene, were enriched from a contaminated former gas plant site soil. Bacterial community composition analysis revealed that a naphthalene-degrading enrichment culture, MMNap, was dominated (84.90%) by a Gram-positive endospore-forming member of the genus Desulfotomaculum with minor contribution (8.60%) from a member of Clostridium. The pyrene-degrading enrichment, MMPyr, was dominated (97.40%) by a species of Desulfotomaculum. The sequences representing the Desulfotomaculum phylotypes shared 98.80% similarity to each other. After 150 days of incubation, MMNap degraded 195 µM naphthalene with simultaneous reduction of sulfate and accumulation of sulfide. Similarly, MMPyr degraded 114 µM pyrene during 180 days of incubation with nearly stochiometric sulfate consumption and sulfide accumulation. In both cases, the addition of sulfate reduction inhibitor, molybdate (20 mM), resulted in complete cessation of the substrate utilization and sulfate reduction that clearly indicated the major role of the sulfate-reducing Desulfotomaculum in biodegradation of the two PAHs. This study is the first report on anaerobic pyrene degradation by a matrix-free, strictly anaerobic, and sulfate-reducing enrichment culture.

The gas phase retention volume behavior of organophosphate esters on polyurethane foam

In this study, the gas-phase retention volume behavior of four highly volatile organophosphate esters (OPEs) on polyurethane foam (PUF) was studied using a frontal chromatogram. The breakthrough volumes (VB) of trimethyl phosphate (TMP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), tripropyl phosphate (TPrP), and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) were 0.33, 0.59, 10.5, and 32.4 m3, respectively. A significant negative correlation was found between the logarithm value of VB and the subcooled liquid vapor pressure (PL) with an r2 of 0.905, indicating that the vapor penetration depends on both the volatility and total air volume. The enthalpy of desorption and vaporization (ΔHS−ΔHV) showed a significant difference between the tested OPEs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), revealing that the strength of the sorption interaction of the tested OPEs vapor on PUF should be different from that of PAHs. The PUF-air partition coefficients (KPUF-air) of the tested OPEs ranged from 4.3 to 8.1, which were lower than those of three-to four-ring PAHs (7.02–10.2) and organochlorines (8.01–9.72), revealing that the partition of highly volatile OPEs on PUF is lower than that of low-volatile compounds. The PUF/XAD cartridge improved the absorption efficiency of the tested OPEs; however, its sorptive capacity was still limited.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in selected rivers in southwestern Nigeria: Seasonal distribution, source apportionment and potential risk assessment

The river sediment has been identified as major potential threats to ecosystem and human health due to its repository ability towards pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A total of 72 surface sediment samples from six major rivers within south-western Nigeria were collected during both wet and dry seasons. Sixteen USEPA priority PAHs were analyzed using GC–MS for profile composition, potential sources, and ecological and human health risks on seasonal basis. PAHs were detected in all analyzed sediments at varying concentrations: ∑16 PAHs ranging from 1226 to 13,093 μg/kg (mean: 1356–12,850 μg/kg) and 1495 to 13,845 μg/kg (mean: 1536–13,671 μg/kg) across all locations during the dry and wet seasons respectively. However, the spread of PAH differs from each location. The carcinogenic PAHs (∑PAH7C) dominated the high molecular weight (HMW) PAH profile (≥ 97%) and accounting for 28 to 45% of the Σ16PAHs, presenting a high carcinogenic potential. Elevated Σ PAHs and ΣPAH7C were observed during the wet season. The study observed varied benzo(a) pyrene (BaP eq) equivalent concentrations across the rivers, suggesting variability in carcinogenic potency. Six-ring PAHs constituted the least composition in all the rivers (< 0.08–0.53 μg/kg) while three and four-ringed PAHs dominated the composition profile. Carbonaceous materials such as black carbon and particulate organic carbon notably influenced PAHs distribution (R2≥0.733, p < 0.05 ). Results of diagnostic ratios suggested the predominance contributions of coal and biomass combustion to PAHs distributions over petrogenic sources by positive matrix factorization (PMF). Further studies on the levels of PAHs in edible seafood transportation processes of PAHs is recommended for developing appropriate risk analysis approaches.
