This paper describes the application of computing techniques to the analysis of a deep anchored retaining wall, foundations for a very high multi-storey tower founded on piles, a series of large underground excavations and foundations for a mass concrete gravity dam. Three of the four examples involve the use of finite element techniques and the basis of this method is outlined with recent advances in modelling some complex geometries and loading conditions.

Primary orgasmic dysfunction: essential treatment components.

In an attempt to determine the essential components of a successful treatment regime for primary orgasmic dysfunction, the principle treatment approaches are reviewed to elucidate the similarities in different programs which have reported similar outcome data. It is concluded that the systematic desensitization studies, the masturbatory training approaches, and the Reproductive Biology Research Foundation series are all effective treatment procedures. It appears that all three approaches employ graduated exposure to sexual stimuli plus some form of directive psychotherapy emphasizing interpersonal skills acquisition. These may be the essential treatment components.

Mongolism

This booklet, one of the smaller volumes of the Ciba Foundation series, consists of eight papers presented at the May 1966 Conference on Mongolism, organized in commemoration of Dr. John Langdon Haydon Down, who a century ago published his original report on mongolism. It was fully appropriate, therefore, to begin the conference with a biographical sketch of Langdon Down by Lord Brain, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Ciba Foundation. Various epidemiologic, cytogenetic and biochemical problems of mongolism were discussed thereafter. The topics are not related to each other but present recent research done by the speakers.

The Anatomy of Memory.

This volume is a record of the first conference on learning, remembering, and forgetting sponsored by the American Institute of Biological Sciences. The program and format is patterned after the Josiah Macey Foundation series of conferences on brain mechanisms and behavior. The purpose of this conference was to bring together an outstanding interdisciplinary group who are concerned with problems of learning and memory primarily at the cellular level. Among the participants are Sir John Eccles, Lawrence Kruger, Holgar Hyden, James McGaugh, Albert M. Uttley, Heinz Von Foerster, and Eugene Roberts. The presentations are informal, the leader initiating each discussion with his own data and area of interest. The other participants discuss their data relevant to the presentation. Questions, criticisms, and comments are freely interjected providing some sparkling, and at times, heated discussion. Experimental investigation of the work of single-block reinforced concrete foundations under a column

In an effort to establish the comparative breaking strength and scheme of foundation failure in jacking and to elucidate the character of foundation failure in bending, three series of single-block reinforced concrete foundations were planned and subjected to failure in the laboratory. The geometric dimensions of the foundations of the experimental series, their reinforcement, and the strength characteristics of the materials used are tabulated. The foundations of all 3 series were tested on a 120 t hydraulic press by the same method. The foundations were loaded in steps of 2000-5000 kg each. Horizontal cracks appeared in the stepped foundation along the contour of contact of the upper and lower steps up until the exhaustion of the jacking bearing capacity. With further increase of the load there was a partial or complete shearing of the upper step of the foundation. Complete failure of the stepped foundations occurred from jacking of the upper pyramid through the body of the lower step. The scheme of failure of rectangular foundations corresponded to that in the norms. The angle of the slope of the face of the pyramids to the vertical in all experimental foundations varied within 45-60 deg. The different jacking capacity of foundations caused a difference in the scheme of failures of the different foundations series. Observations are made with regard to the relative strength of stepped foundations, the calculated value of the jacking strength of experimental foundations, the formation of cracks and character failure, and compression strains. The character of failure from jacking of stepped foundations differs appreciably from that of rectangular foundations. Shearing of the step, which occurs in a stepped foundation and precedes failure from jacking or bending, lowers its bearing capacity.

A Study of Fourth Grade Children’s Comprehension of Certain Verbal Abstractions

ions Used in this Study. ?Three sets of primary basic readers and a set of science books were analyzed for 246 verbal abstractions: (1) Easy Growth in Reading Series,2 (2) Curric ulum Foundation Series, 3 (3) Betts Basic Read ers, 4 and (4) The Wonderworld of Science.^ Tests Used in this Study. ?One standardized test and three instruments that were construct ed for this study were used. The Stanford-Binet Test of Intelligence, Form L, 1937 Revision, was the standardized test used to determine the verbal intelligence of the population. The other three instruments were: (1) an inventory on background of information, (2) a test on class ifying ideas, and (3) a test on indexing ideas. Statistical Procedures. ?The subjects were given a series of tests to measure various abil ities. To determine whether the instruments used to measure certain abilities were signifi cant, two statistical techniques were employed: 1. The standard error of the difference be tween proportions was used to determine significance of items. 2. The reliability of the tests was establish ed by using the split-half method and the Spearman-Brown Prophecy-Formula. The results obtained from the tests were compared by employing the Pearson Product Moment Formula. This technique was used be cause it provided a way of determining the re lationship existing among various abilities.
