Costume and Body Language of Ethnic Dance Drama under Semiotics: An Analytical Study

Dance drama is a dramatic form with dance as its main means of expression, which has been developed in China for less than a century. In recent years, the development of Chinese dance drama, especially ethnic dance drama, has shown an obvious upward trend. Several excellent dance drama works have appeared, forming some distinctive dance drama styles, among which The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting, The Peacock, and The Railway to Tibet are quite representative. This study will investigate the above three dance dramas based on semiotics. An analysis of costume and body language is carried out in this study based on the semiotics, from the morphological characteristics of dance and costume. In addition, the author makes a comprehensive exploration of the integration of the external form, fabric, structure and pattern of costume and body language, tries to reveal the way of interaction between costume symbols and body symbols in dance drama, and summarises the artistic connotation of the integration of dance costumes and body language. Then, it provides ideas for the role creation and education of dance drama.

Linguistic, Aesthetic And Cultural Aspects Of Translating Literary Texts (Arabic-English): A Model For Translation Pedagogy

The main aim of this paper is to explore the different linguistic, aesthetic, and cultural aspects of literary translation. The paper examines the various features of literary translation at both macro and micro levels. It focuses on those features of literary texts that are characteristic of literary works. First, we follow the standard linguistic paradigm in the discussion of literary translation, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and the aesthetic and cultural features of literary texts. The qualitative method is used to explore the various features of literary translation to identify the recurring linguistic and literary devices lacking systematic forms and patterns to find a comparable genre-specific form in the target language. The model proposed consists of five stages: (1) Retention of sound devices, (2) Retention of syntactic patterns, (3) Retention of semantic features, (4) Retention of figurative language, and (5) Retention of the cultural aspects. The model is a descriptive model for analyzing literary translation procedures and can be used as a pedagogical model for translation practice. Findings show that employing this model would offer translation students new insights to describe challenging linguistic, aesthetic, and cultural features in the source texts to think of some practical solutions for translating literary works.

Experiences of externalisation in recovery from Anorexia Nervosa: a reflexive thematic analysis

BackgroundMany individuals perceive Anorexia Nervosa (AN) as a part of their personal identity. Externalisation of the problem is a practice that is often taken up within NICE recommended treatments for AN. Dominant understandings of externalisation are that this practice involves making the “problem” a separate entity, external to the individual. It is an attitude taken by the client and family, stimulated by the therapist to build engagement with treatment and supportive relationships around the individual. However, there is a paucity of research exploring the therapeutic effects of this approach. This research aims to address this gap by exploring the role of externalisation in treatment for AN to elicit an understanding of how this practice is experienced including how it can help and hinder recovery.MethodsThirteen adults with a current and/or past diagnosis of AN participated in semi-structured interviews. This qualitative study used a reflexive thematic analysis.AnalysisParticipants described their experience of externalisation as a journey which is depicted by four main themes. ‘Separating the AN from the self’ reflects the tensions inherent in learning to distinguish between one’s perceived sense of "self" and "the AN". ‘Making sense of the AN’ describes the experience of language forms used to separate the AN from the individual’s identity. ‘Feeling seen, or unseen as a person beyond the AN’ illustrates the helpful and harmful effects of externalising practices on relationships. ‘Navigating a complex relationship with the AN’ depicts the effects of one-, versus two-way externalisation on the individual’s relationship to AN.ConclusionsThe notion of separating one’s internal dialogue from one’s concept of self may initially be rejected by the individual experiencing AN. However, as the individual develops trust in the therapist and becomes socialised to common forms of externalising language, they may begin to realise two sides within them, a perceived “healthy self” and “the anorexia voice”. However, social-cultural discourses around eating contribute to ambiguity during the differentiation between these two voices, thus elucidating the effects of an absence of problem deconstruction alongside externalisation within ED-focussed treatments. Externalising practices were most helpful when led by the individual using their own experience-near language and least helpful when they did not permit the individual to feel seen as a person beyond the AN. Therapists, treatment teams and family members should be cognisant of the emotional effects of language used to externalise AN. Importantly, they should ensure that externalisation is practiced within the spirit of narrative therapy from which it originates.

Which social media platforms facilitate monitoring the opioid crisis?

Social media can provide real-time insight into trends in substance use, addiction, and recovery. Prior studies have used platforms such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), but evolving policies around data access have threatened these platforms' usability in research. We evaluate the potential of a broad set of platforms to detect emerging trends in the opioid epidemic. From these, we created a shortlist of 11 platforms, for which we documented official policies regulating drug-related discussion, data accessibility, geolocatability, and prior use in opioid-related studies. We quantified their volumes of opioid discussion, capturing informal language by including slang generated using a large language model. Beyond the most commonly used Reddit and X, the platforms with high potential for use in opioid-related surveillance are TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. Leveraging many different social platforms, instead of a single platform, safeguards against sudden changes to data access and may better capture all populations that use opioids than any single platform.

Variasi Bahasa pada Konten Youtube Majelis Lucu: Kajian Sosiolinguistik

Many content creators convey Arabic material in a funny and witty way. It is not uncommon to convey Arabic content videos via Youtube in informal language and evem use slang to make it seem more communicative. The aim of this research is to find out the variations of Arabic found in the funny assembly youtube content, as well as find out the social language found in it. The research method used is a qualitative content analysis approach with the research subject being one of the videos from the Majelis Lucu’s youtube account. The research instrument used was observation in one of the videos with analysis of each Arabic sentence delivered and documentation to record the time the sentence was delivered in the video in question. The result of the reseach show that in the videos submitted in humorous forums, a total of 12 variation of Arabic were found, with details of 7 of language interferences, 2 language integrations, 1 code switching. And 2 arabic code mixings in youtube content. Meanwhile, the social language in the video found 2 social language with the type of slang and vulgar. The influence of conveying Arabic through youtube social media has a big impact on people’s understanding of Arabic.

A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF MACHINE LEARNING APPROACHES FOR CUSTOMER SENTIMENT ANALYSIS IN BANKING SECTOR

This study explores the application of sentiment analysis in the banking sector, focusing on customer feedback to enhance service quality and customer experiences. We collected a comprehensive dataset of approximately 100,000 entries from diverse sources, including customer satisfaction surveys, social media platforms, and direct feedback. A robust preprocessing pipeline was employed to address challenges associated with unstructured data, informal language, and mixed sentiments. We evaluated several machine learning and natural language processing models, including Logistic Regression, Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, AUC-ROC, and training time. The results revealed that advanced models, particularly BERT, achieved superior performance with an accuracy of 88% and an F1 score of 0.86, demonstrating an exceptional ability to capture nuanced sentiments. This study underscores the importance of employing sophisticated sentiment analysis techniques in banking to derive actionable insights from customer feedback. The findings suggest that leveraging advanced models can significantly improve service quality and customer satisfaction, while also presenting avenues for future research into real-time sentiment analysis and its integration with customer relationship management systems.

A Comprehensive Formal Specification of ARINC 653 With Conformity Proof

ABSTRACTAs the predominant standard for partitioning operating systems, ARINC 653 has been applied in many critical domains. However, its reliance on informal textual languages presents challenges for ensuring both the correctness of the standard itself and the conformity of a specification or an OS to this standard. This paper addresses the gap through formal work on the ARINC 653 standard. We provide a comprehensive formal specification of multi‐core ARINC 653 Part 1–5 using Isabelle/HOL that encompasses all the 68 services and covers all components outlined in the standard, then conduct a formal proof of conformity of the specification according to ARINC 653 Part 3A. Our work marks the first comprehensive multi‐core ARINC 653 specification with a formal conformity proof. Notably, we identify and address three defects in the standard document during the formal specification and proof.

Robert (Bob) Anthony Altemeyer (1940-2024).

Robert (Bob) Anthony Altemeyer (June 6, 1940-February 7, 2024) was an influential social psychologist who also shaped personality and political psychology. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Bob was educated at Yale (undergraduate) and Carnegie-Mellon (graduate). Following a 2-year stint at Doane College in Nebraska, he established his career at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada) from 1968 to 2008. In 1986, Bob was awarded the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science Prize for Behavioral Science Research, largely for his development of the right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) construct. Whereas the authoritarian personality construct developed by Adorno and colleagues in the 1950s was rooted in psychodynamics, Bob drew on social learning principles and conceptualized authoritarianism as both an attitudinal orientation and trait. Not all of Bob's ideas held true, such as the social learning underpinnings that he proposed for RWA. But true to his inquisitive nature, he wrote that he would be excited to learn of RWA's strong heritable components if uncovered (as they later were). An anticonformist to the core, Bob published almost exclusively in books despite the field prioritizing journal articles, typically as sole author and working with few collaborators, and writing about complex ideas with rather informal and unconventional language. His legacy is proof that fighting the odds and remaining authentic, rather than chasing conventions and norms, can leave an indelible mark on science. Informal language contact and formulaic language development of Chinese students abroad during a global crisis

Abstract This longitudinal mixed-methods study tracked the informal language contact and phrasal verb knowledge of 21 Chinese foundation program students in the United Kingdom (UK) during the 2019–2020 academic year through three rounds of data collection. Because of the disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the study was able to capture the impact of a global crisis on the experiences of international students studying abroad and learning a second language (L2). Data from a Language Contact Questionnaire, a Study Abroad Social Network Survey, and semi-structured interviews indicated significant changes in their L2 use and social networks. Our findings showed that the students sharply reduced their L2 contact and increased their use of first language (L1) during the pandemic. Productive and receptive tests assessing phrasal verb knowledge revealed that the students did not make significant gains after the pandemic lockdown. The study suggests that significant changes in the living environment can directly impact students’ L2 usage and their formulaic language development.

Understanding the Role of Communication Ethics in the Flexing Phenomenon on Social Media

In recent years, the phenomenon of flexing on social media has gained significant attention, particularly in the context of communication ethics. Flexing, which involves showcasing luxury, achievements, or expensive possessions to gain recognition, has become prevalent among social media users. This study aims to analyze flexing activities from the perspective of communication ethics, highlighting how ethical considerations can influence the impact of flexing. Using a qualitative approach, this research involved 8 informants who actively engage in flexing on social media. Data were collected through observations of social media content and in-depth interviews with the informants. The findings reveal that flexing serves as a means of self-expression, interaction, and identity formation. Flexing actors utilize various forms of language, such as casual, informative, and professional, to convey their messages and engage with their audience. The study also identifies the motives behind flexing, including personal satisfaction, recognition, inspiration, and self-image building. Despite the potential negative aspects of flexing, such as social comparison and low self-esteem, the research suggests that adherence to communication ethics can mitigate these issues. The results of this study are expected to contribute to digital literacy, promoting ethical communication practices on social media and serving as a reference for policy-making related to social media usage in Indonesia. Through this research, we aim to provide a deeper understanding of the flexing phenomenon and its ethical implications, fostering a more respectful and positive online environment. Harnessing AI for Enhanced Searching in Digital Libraries: Transforming Research Practices

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in digital libraries is changing the paradigm in which users search and interact with digital content. This article is focused on how the use of AI technologies improves the search in digital libraries, demonstrating the benefits of such technologies in overcoming the challenges associated with formulation of query, information retrieval, and end user usage. Most search engine systems face the problems of user queries, which are inherent in online searches. Many user queries are vague, imprecise or ambiguous with regards to the context and as a result lead to less than satisfactory search results. AI technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) solve this challenge effectively as they enhance comprehension of queries, contextual understanding, and relevance of the results returned. With the capabilities of NLP incorporated in search engines, search queries which are in the form of natural language can be understood and executed which leads to efficiency in targeting the information needed. Comprehensive restructuring of standard information systems is used by computer learning algorithms for searches by inference and instills usage in users. This study also examines the place of AI in query formulation and the different ways it can be employed; fully automated, semi-automated and/or manually so that the users are less faced with the challenges that are usually present during the query formulation process. Such increases in the level of difficulty and scope of information retrieval suggest that search AI improved the scenario.

The predictive effects of motivation, enjoyment, and self-efficacy on informal digital learning of LOTE: Evidence from French and German learners in China

This article highlights the prevalent bias on global English in the existing informal digital language learning (IDLL) research and draws attention to informal digital learning of language other than English (IDL-LOTE) as a highly under-researched area in computer-assisted language learning. Recognizing how motivation, enjoyment, and self-efficacy serve as three crucial individual differences factors in second language (L2) development, the study sets out to examine the predictive effects of the three variables on IDL-LOTE. Drawing upon questionnaire data collected from 862 Chinese university students learning French or German as their LOTE, a structural equation modeling analysis was conducted. Our findings highlight that 1) promotion-focused motivation, enjoyment, and self-efficacy can significantly and directly influence IDL-LOTE, but prevention-focused motivation fails to generate such a direct impact; 2) enjoyment and self-efficacy can respectively act as a full mediator in the indirect effect of prevention-focused motivation on IDL-LOTE, and they can also partially channel the indirect influence of promotion-focused motivation on IDL-LOTE; 3) the specific language being learned (i.e., French or German) does not moderate the predictive effects of motivation, enjoyment, and self-efficacy on IDL-LOTE. These findings enable us to propose pedagogical implications and point out future research directions to advance the agenda of IDLL.

Activation of Motivation in Foreign Language Classroom

This article examines how teaching a foreign language through motivation, novelty and a variety of forms and methods of the lesson effectively affects improving students' perception of the materials provided and increasing the level of knowledge of students, and also proves that it enriches, systematizes knowledge and leads to the activation of cognitive activity of students in a foreign language lesson. The definition of modern methods of teaching a foreign language and various forms of teaching is given. And most importantly, it promotes the wide use of the acquired knowledge as the owner of a professional profession, applying them on the basis of practice. In addition, non-traditional technologies of lessons are explained, methods of work useful for the student and effective for the teacher are differentiated. Innovative pedagogical technologies and non-traditional technologies, trainings related to other educational methods that allow effective and interesting use of new information technologies in the classroom, definitions and comments on new teaching methods and techniques are provided. This article discusses the results of the survey conducted among foreign language educators about their attitudes towards the motivation and innovation in foreign language classroom.

Metaphor as Method in the Writings of Isaiah Berlin

The conventional approach to Isaiah Berlin's writings has been to treat them discursively, as philosophical texts. While such approaches are insightful, there is more to Berlin's writings than his arguments. Among his literary strategies is a comparative approach that involves the use of metaphors, similes, and analogies. As I will argue, Berlin's use of metaphor constitutes a core component of his work, where his meaning is often suggestive more than precise. Berlin's intention seems to be to exhibit those aspects of experience reflective of uncertainty, where our choices are not determined by necessity. Such an intention ostensibly exhibits his value pluralism, as well as an oft-neglected sensitivity to the forms of language. By resorting to metaphors Berlin accomplishes several things: he shows how the intelligibility of experience is partially imagistic, he illustrates how meaning can be structured comparatively but nondiscursively, and he exemplifies the importance of these things for decision making.

Women's Language in Bargaining: A Sociolinguistic Study of Seller-Buyer Interactions in Dinoyo Market

This study investigates the characteristics of women’s language in market bargaining, revealing how specific communicative features affect buying and selling interactions. These features include the use of polite and non-confrontational language forms, such as hedges and tag questions, which reflect a desire to maintain harmonious social relations. Drawing on Robin Lakoff’s (1975) theory, the study examines how features like hedges, tag questions, and super polite forms are employed by female sellers and buyers during market interactions. The research methods include direct observation and conversation analysis to identify the frequency and context of these language features. The findings indicate that the use of female language traits not only influences the nature of bargaining but also contributes to establishing and maintaining positive social relationships between sellers and buyers. These insights enhance our understanding of communication strategies in economic contexts and underscore the importance of recognizing gender-specific linguistic features in everyday social interactions. Furthermore, the research suggests that a deeper understanding of women’s language traits can provide practical benefits for market participants, aiding in the improvement of their negotiation and marketing skills

Recognizing film as a potent medium of expression, the research underscores the profound impact of visual and auditory storytelling in conveying intricate messages through language used. Through the lens of Roland Barthes semiotic theory, this research endeavors to unravel the complexities embedded within familial communication, especially using informal language. Drawing upon theories of mass communication, media studies, and interpersonal dynamics, the qualitative methodology employed in this study entails a meticulous examination of 20 pivotal scenes encapsulating father-child interactions. Viewing Nanny McPhee through a semiotic lens unveils layers of meaning, encompassing denotation, connotation, and myth. Over a span from August 28, 2023, to November 10, 2023, the researcher meticulously observed and analyzed the nuances of familial communication depicted in the film. By capturing and dissecting scenes through Barthes theoretical framework, the study unveils prevalent themes such as misunderstandings, self-centeredness, and the repercussions of ineffective communication within family dynamics. Drawing from the research findings, it can be concluded that within the narrative of Nanny McPhee, a plethora of communication pitfalls emerge, including (1) instances of misunderstanding, (2) a pronounced focus on self-interest, (3) a reluctance to entertain external perspectives, (4) unilateral decision-making devoid of discourse, and (5) an overall deficiency in familial communication. Furthermore, the absence of paternal guidance and attention looms large, wielding considerable influence over the behavioral and developmental trajectories of the children depicted in the film.

Large language models, social demography, and hegemony: comparing authorship in human and synthetic text

Large language models have become popular over a short period of time because they can generate text that resembles human writing across various domains and tasks. The popularity and breadth of use also put this technology in the position to fundamentally reshape how written language is perceived and evaluated. It is also the case that spoken language has long played a role in maintaining power and hegemony in society, especially through ideas of social identity and “correct” forms of language. But as human communication becomes even more reliant on text and writing, it is important to understand how these processes might shift and who is more likely to see their writing styles reflected back at them through modern AI. We therefore ask the following question: who does generative AI write like? To answer this, we compare writing style features in over 150,000 college admissions essays submitted to a large public university system and an engineering program at an elite private university with a corpus of over 25,000 essays generated with GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 to the same writing prompts. We find that human-authored essays exhibit more variability across various individual writing style features (e.g., verb usage) than AI-generated essays. Overall, we find that the AI-generated essays are most similar to essays authored by students who are males with higher levels of social privilege. These findings demonstrate critical misalignments between human and AI authorship characteristics, which may affect the evaluation of writing and calls for research on control strategies to improve alignment.

Mastery of the Concept of Percentage and Its Representations in Finnish Comprehensive School Grades 7–9

This research was conducted in 2019 in collaboration with Japanese colleagues, with the research tasks translated from the original Japanese. In Finland, a total of 1112 students from grades 7–9 in primary school participated in the study. In our article, we examine Finnish students’ mastery of the concept of percentages and how they express their mathematical thinking about percentages in a multimodal way. A multimodal expression of mathematical thinking can typically take the form of natural language, written mathematics, pictorial representations, mathematical symbolic language, or combinations of these, which can be used to manage information, such as through tables. Our focus is on Finnish primary-school students’ mastery of the concept of percentages, and we then narrow our analysis to tasks where students have used a multimodal approach. We analyze the representations of the concept of percentages and the related thought processes. The concept of percentages was best mastered in grade 9 and weakest in grade 7. Students mostly used a combination of pictorial language, natural language, and mathematical symbolic language to describe their solution processes. However, describing their thinking in different ways did not necessarily highlight possible errors in their reasoning.

New media is a communication channel that brings about change by disseminating information through texts published by authors. Because text is a form of ideological practice, language, style, word choice, and grammatical structure, it is understood as a decision that has a certain ideological meaning in order to gain public support. This research aims to analyze Rocky Gerung's freedom of speech on the Rocky Gerung Official YouTube channel and how discourse practices take place on YouTube as a virtual space. This research was carried out to examine virtual media. Using a critical paradigm, this research is descriptive-qualitative using critical discourse analysis methods. Using Norman Fairclough's thinking, at the macro-level analysis, there are linguistic elements used that are philosophical, straightforward, and rich in meaning using metaphors. At the micro level, there is the use of special terminology in the world of politics, government, and philosophy. As well as using intertextual patterns, there is consistency between one sentence and another. At the meso level of analysis, researchers create relationships between characters or participants involved in the text in this research.

A Knowledge Graph-Based Consistency Detection Method for Network Security Policies

Network security policy is regarded as a guideline for the use and management of the network environment, which usually formulates various requirements in the form of natural language. It can help network managers conduct standardized network attack detection and situation awareness analysis in the overall time and space environment of network security. However, in most cases, due to configuration updates or policy conflicts, there are often differences between the real network environment and network security policies. In this case, the consistency detection of network security policies is necessary. The previous consistency detection methods of security policies have some problems. Firstly, the detection direction is single, only focusing on formal reasoning methods to achieve logical consistency detection and solve problems. Secondly, the detection policy field is not comprehensive, focusing only on a certain type of problem in a certain field. Thirdly, there are numerous forms of data structures used for consistency detection, and it is difficult to unify the structured processing and analysis of rule library carriers and target information carriers. With the development of intelligent graph and data mining technology, the above problems have the possibility of optimization. This article proposes a new consistency detection approach for network security policy, which uses an intelligent graph database as a visual information carrier, which can widely connect detection information and achieve comprehensive detection across knowledge domains, physical devices, and detection methods. At the same time, it can also help users grasp the security associations with the real network environment based on the graph algorithm of the knowledge graph and intelligent reasoning. Furthermore, these actual network situations and knowledge bases can help managers improve policies more tailored to local conditions. This article also introduces the consistency detection process of typical cases of network security policies, demonstrating the practical details and effectiveness of this method.
