A method for determining initial strip width in roll forming of thick-walled steel pipes

This paper proposes a novel method for determining the initial strip width for thick-walled steel pipes in roll forming. The method introduces three criteria to define the minimum initial width, maximum initial width, and a refined selection within the specified range. An industrial roll forming line is simulated using the commercial finite element software Abaqus. The accuracy of the finite element model is validated by comparing its results with measurements from the production line. Subsequently, the appropriate initial strip width is determined for producing pipes from St37 steel, with an external diameter of 219.1 mm and thicknesses of 6, 10 and 14 mm. This determination is based on criteria defined for circumferential reduction, edge buckling and relative curvature of the strip deforming at the fin-pass forming stage. The results demonstrate that a thicker pipe requires a lower initial width but a higher reduction ratio in the fin-pass station. In conclusion, the proposed method shows great potential for use in the pipe industry.

Temperature Distribution of Frozen Wall Formed by Irregular Hole Arrangement During In Situ Repair of Underground Shield Machine

In order to study the development law of the irregular hole freezing temperature field, combined with the shield solution project of the Nanjing Water Supply Corridor, the distribution characteristics and influencing factors of the irregular freezing temperature field of the river bottom shield machine are studied by numerical simulation. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) The extension length of the outer ring pipe is correlated approximately positively with the thickness and average temperature of the freezing wall at the bottom of the cup. The thickness increases by 0.25 m, and the average temperature decreases by 1.25 °C for every 1 m increase in the extension length. (2) The intersection time decreases logarithmically with the increase in the extension length of the outer ring tube. (3) As the ratio of the axial angle between the two adjacent tubes in the weak area of the outer ring tube becomes larger, the temperature of the weak point in the center of the two tubes increases approximately linearly. The midpoint temperature of the two tubes increases by 3.3 °C for every 1 increase in the angle coefficient. (4) With the increase in the opening angle of the inner ring hole, the thickness and average temperature change, respectively, at 150 d are not more than 0.15 m and 0.6 °C. The results show that under the irregular freezing form, the angle and length of the outer ring pipe have a great influence on the temperature field, and the angle of the inner ring pipe has little influence on the final distribution of the temperature field. The average temperature and the temperature distribution of the weak points show a trend of decreasing first and then increasing along the shield advancing direction, reaching a minimum near the cutterhead.

Thermoelectric installation for lifting objects from shallow reservoirs using the freezing method

Objective. The purpose of the study is to develop the design of a thermoelectric installation for lifting objects from shallow reservoirs using the freezing method, as well as its calculation, analysis of parameters and electrical and thermophysical characteristics. Method. The research is based on the use of methods of thermodynamic analysis, full-scale and computational modeling of cryogenic equipment in order to find optimal solutions for the reliability and service life of low-temperature installations. Result. The installation includes a waterproof probe, on the end surface of which, facing the bottom of the reservoir, thermoelectric modules are installed, heat is removed from the hot junctions of which by means of a heat removal system made in the form of an all-metal heat pipe or in the form of a thermal thermosiphon. The connection between the object lifted from the reservoir and the thermoelectric installation is carried out through a cold wall by freezing. The thermoelectric installation was calculated and its parameters were determined. Graphs were constructed and dependencies were obtained describing the main characteristics of TEMs included in the thermoelectric installation. The graphs are presented at a temperature of the hot junctions of the TEM of 300 K and the achievement of such values of the thickness of frozen water ice on the cold wall of the technical device that would allow lifting objects from a reservoir up to 4 m deep. Conclusion. These risks come from various sources, one of which is noise from various equipment and ongoing activities. One of the jobs that cause high noise in construction work is MEP (Mechanical Electrical Plumbing) work. Based on Permenaker Number 13 Year 2011, the Threshold Value (NAB) for noise that can be accepted by workers is 85 dBA for 8 hours a day. Based on the measurement of the construction of the flats, the MEP work in the form of Beam Separator Elevator Installation, Pipe Fabrication, Electrical Wiring Lighting Installation, as well as Welding and Grinding of Iron Pipe causes noise above the NAB. The highest noise comes from pipe fabrication in the form of iron pipe cutting activities using large grinding tools and bevel machines that produce noise of 107 dBA. From the Daily Noise Dose (DND) calculation, the noise generated from MEP work has a dangerous risk level for workers' hearing. The destructive form and response analysis of buried concrete pipes under the action of internal explosion loads

This research analyzes the damage mechanism of subterranean concrete pipelines subjected to internal explosive loads using a mix of field blasting tests and numerical simulations. The field tests reveal that, under the effect of internal explosion loads, axial and circumferential cracks occur in the concrete pipelines, with the crown, invert, and springline being damaged firstly, leading to penetrating cracks. In addition, an arbitrary Lagrangian Euler (ALE) method is used to establish a coupled model of underground concrete pipeline under the condition of internal explosion. The influence of the explosion mass on the destructive effects and dynamic characteristics of the pipeline is investigated, and the internal wall strain at the explosion center and in the central part of the pipeline is analyzed. Furthermore, the propagation and attenuation laws of shock waves in pipelines are investigated, and an attenuation law formula of shock waves inside the pipeline with two ends open is provided, which will be useful for future research.

Microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism along the thickness of heavy-wall ferrite-bainite dual-phase offshore pipelines by the progressive forming process

The progressive forming process of J-forming, C-forming, O-forming, and expansion (JCOE process) is an effective approach for manufacturing high-strength and high-strain offshore pipelines. However, the difference in microstructure of each layer along the thickness increases due to the strain accumulation and deformation direction during pipe forming, which affects the properties. In this study, the effects of the JCOE process on the microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism of heavy-wall ferrite-bainite dual-phase offshore pipeline steel along the thickness were investigated using a combination of simulation and experiment. The results revealed that the higher accumulated strains in the outer and inner layers increased localized microstrain and ferrite hardening and improved the overall strength. However, the pile-up of many dislocations at the ferrite-bainite interface promoted the generation of cleavage facets, increasing the plastic damage. The outer layer had a consistent deformation direction in the JCOE process, promoting dislocations to slip toward the phase interface. Dislocations in the inner layer slipped and annihilated in the opposite direction by back stress due to reverse deformation. The work-hardening behavior of each layer after JCOE process was divided into two stages and decreased with the increase of accumulated strain. Furthermore, the cyclic plastic deformation reduced the plastic damage and ensured the deformation capacity. This work is valuable for the development and control of microstructural characterization and forming fabrication of high-strength, high-strain offshore pipelines.

Comprehensive evaluation of energy absorption characteristics of Al‐CFRP hybrid tube under radial impacts

AbstractThis paper aimed to investigate the energy absorption characteristics and damage mechanism of carbon fiber reinforced plastics/aluminum (Al‐CFRP) under radial impact. In this study, the damage mode of the hybrid tube is analyzed by falling hammer impact experiments, and the correctness of the finite element model is verified by comparing the experimental and numerical simulation results. Then, the damage mechanism of the hybrid tube under impact loading and the effects of the increase of the fiber angle, the wall thickness of Aluminum, and the number of outer CFRP layers on the impact resistance were analyzed according to the model. The comprehensive performance model of the hybrid tube was established by using the complex scale comprehensive evaluation method, and the genetic algorithm was used to optimize the hybrid tube and determine its optimal performance under radial impact load. The results show that the Al‐CFRP hybrid tube's overall stiffness and deformation resistance under radial impact is improved with the increase of the fiber angle, the wall thickness of the Al tube, and the number of outer CFRP layers. Combined with the parametric analysis of the numerical simulation results, a comprehensive performance evaluation model based on the complex proportionality assessment method (COPRAS) was developed and a genetic algorithm (GA) under back propagation (BP) neural network prediction was used. Environmental aspects of the effectiveness of fish-protection structures such as umbrella on the Irtysh river in the Omsk region

It is generally accepted that water intake facilities used in fishery reservoirs adversely affect the state of fish stocks — a large number of juvenile fish fall into them along with water. The study of environmental factors, hydrological conditions and design solutions affecting the effectiveness of fish-protection structures (devices) such as umbrella installed on bottom water intakes in the form of suction or gravity pipes of pumping stations is of great importance for preventing the death of juvenile fish. Studies of the effectiveness of umbrella fish-protection devices were carried out in 2020–2022 at two water intake facilities located on the Irtysh River within the boundaries of the Omsk Region. Field studies at each water intake were carried out during four calendar seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter). The collection of materials on the species, size and quantitative composition of larvae and juveniles of fish was carried out before the fish-protection installation, in coastal wells and near the shore in the area of water intake to study the background state of the concentration of juvenile fish around the clock with an interval of 4 hours. Juveniles and larvae of fish in the area of water intake were localized exclusively along the coast, where they were caught. Juveniles and larvae of fish were not recorded at other fishing points. Studies have shown that the location of the water intake umbrella heads in a place remote from the shore, where the larvae and juveniles of fish are practically not found, as well as the low flow rate in the water intake devices, ensure high efficiency of fish-protection devices of channel water intakes.

Pretreatment of anaerobic fermentation feedstock in a vortex layer apparatus: Effect of the working chamber ferromagnetic core on biogas production

Currently, the volume of waste generation is growing at a high rate. Anaerobic digestion is an effective way to process organic waste to produce biogas. To increase the bioavailability and efficiency of mass transfer between feedstock particles and microorganisms, it is advisable to pretreat organic waste using various methods. One of the most promising and energy-efficient methods for preparing a feedstock for anaerobic bioconversion is its processing in a vortex layer apparatus (VLA). However, there are some limitations in the VLA operation. Therefore, to exclude the stagnant central zone from the volume of the VLA working chamber and increase the magnitude of the magnetic field in the VLA working chamber, a ferromagnetic core in the form of a steel pipe was coaxially mounted. Thus, the purpose of this work is to experimentally study the effect of the ferromagnetic core of the VLA working chamber on the production of biogas during anaerobic bioconversion of a model of organic waste from the agricultural sector. To achieve this goal, an experimental plant was developed and created. The experimental data obtained suggest the high efficiency of pretreatment of the feedstock in VLA with a ferromagnetic core in the working chamber before anaerobic bioconversion. The developed anaerobic bioconversion system made it possible to increase the methane production rate by 287 % at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 days and by 3.5 times at HRT of 2 days compared to the control. At the same time, the methane yield at HRT of 4 days increased by 43 %, and at HRT of 2 days it decreased by 14 %. The hydrogen sulfide content in biogas also increased more than three times, while no hydrogen was detected in the biogas. Thus, pretreatment of the feedstock in VLA with a ferromagnetic core to produce biohythane in a one-stage anaerobic bioconversion system at 55.1 °C is impractical.

Performance simulation of L-shaped heat pipe and air coupled cooling process for ternary lithium battery module

Currently, the conventional heat pipe form and working fluid are not well suited for power batteries. Existing simulation studies on battery thermal management with coupled heat pipes often overlook the two-phase flow and heat transfer of working fluid within the heat pipe. Additionally, the temperature difference between electrode region and cell is neglected in thermal behaviour simulation of the battery. Aiming at these problems, this paper proposes the design of an L-shaped heat pipe, which aims to efficiently adapt to heat dissipation of square batteries and the spatial arrangement within the battery module. And the phase change, flow and heat transfer processes of working fluid inside heat pipe are simulated and reproduced using the VOF (volume of fluid) method. Additionally, a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model of an 8S1P ternary lithium-ion battery module is established based on the NTGK (Newman, Tiedemann, Gu, and Kim) method. Focusing upon thermal behaviour properties of the 8S1P battery module at different discharge rates, we investigate and optimize the thermal management efficiency of L-shaped heat pipes coupled with air cooling. The analysis reveals that the battery module model provides a more accurate representation of the temperature field on the body of batteries and the temperature variation among them. The evaporation-condensation process of the working fluid inside the heat pipe can continue in dynamic equilibrium, and the heat transfer effect through phase transition is well. With battery discharge rates varying from 1C to 3.5C, the addition of forced air cooling and introduction of cold air from air conditioning allows efficient control of temperature and temperature difference of the module, resulting in an ideal cooling effect. This study further improves the accuracy of the design and simulation of BTM (battery thermal management) that coupled with heat pipes, which can provide certain reference for related research.

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF THE OVERHEAD CRANE WITH SIX VERTICAL COLUMNS

This study delves into the comprehensive examination of an overhead crane’s construction, focusing on its frame, columns, and beams, while considering factors such as strength, stability, and stiffness. Through an in-depth review in the design domain, it is proposed a specific structural configuration for the overhead crane. This design comprises six vertical columns supporting two longitudinal beams equipped with tracks for the trolley’s longitudinal movement. Additionally, cross beams featuring winches are mounted on the trolley’s cross beams. The crane’s columns are securely mounted on a foundation, and struts are employed to attach the crane to the load-bearing wall of the building, ensuring longitudinal and transverse stability. The inclusion of cross truss structures with longitudinal struts further enhances the crane’s overall stiffness, with additional vertical struts provided to augment the left side’s longitudinal stiffness. The study also encompasses the analysis of the crane frame’s construction, complete with the development of an appropriate calculation scheme and the computation of static reactions in supports. Further calculations involve determining the cross-sections of vertical columns and longitudinal beams, ensuring compliance with strength, rigidity, and stability requirements. The selected cross-section for the columns, in the form of a square profile pipe (100×100×3 mm), is meticulously chosen to meet these criteria. Simulation modeling of load scenarios on the crane frame elements in SolidWorks software validates their strength, stiffness, and stability. Mathematical models and calculations provided the optimal parameters and characteristics of each crane component, ensuring a superior level of safety and operational efficiency. These results provide valuable insights for future research in mechanical engineering and the design of industrial mechanisms.

Influence of Channel Orientation in Air Coolers on the Efficiency of Heat Removal from Powerful Semiconductor Devices

The results of the study of air-cooled coolers with natural and forced heat removal from such powerful semiconductor devices as processors are presented. Experiments were performed in the SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation software environment to assess the influence of the orientation of the formed thermal channels on the efficiency of heat removal from the surface of a heat-loaded element. Three-dimensional models of tower heatsinks with an installed fan and a supporting structure in the form of heat pipes penetrating fins that form horizontal (model No 1) or vertical (model No 2) air channels have been developed, which made it possible to determine the efficiency of heat removal from the processor during natural and forced convection. The developed model No 1 was rotated by 90°, which may be due to design requirements in the development of technical means. This led to a change in the movement of warm air during natural and forced convection along the vertically directed channels with an analysis of the effectiveness of passive and active cooling. The number of heat pipes has been changed from six to two for previously developed types of radiators (models No 1 and 2), only with active cooling. This made it possible to experimentally establish the influence of design solutions (the number and orientation of heat pipes) in the production of modern air-cooled coolers on the efficiency of heat removal.

Pemberdayaan Kelompok Tani Hutan AOK melalui Budidaya Lebah Trigona SP dengan Inovasi Pemanfaatan Limbah Non B3 berupa Pipa PMK dan Plat Tangki

Purpose: This research aims to find out how to make Trigona Sp beehives using non-B3 solid waste in the form of used PMK pipes and tank plates and to see the savings and handling of household waste handled by Trigona Sp beehives made from PMK pipes. Apart from that, through this research we can also see the contribution of the KTH Aok group in utilizing household waste in the form of used cooking oil in the Dul village area as a natural pesticide. Methodology: The method used in this research is a case study where direct observations are made of the innovations implemented at KTH Aok and will be explained using qualitative descriptive methods. This research will be carried out in the cultivation garden of the Community Empowerment Program run by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Pangkal Balam "Aok Bee Farm" in Dul Village, Pangkalan Baru Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province. Result: non-B3 solid waste in the form of PMK pipes and tank plates can be used as stands for Trigona Sp beehives which are sturdier and more resistant to unpredictable weather. To make it, simply cut the used PMK pipe and tank plate according to the specified size, then weld the cut pipe and plate to join the two parts together until it is finished and can be used as a tool for Trigona Sp bee nests. Through this tool, we can handle Non-B3 waste as well as household waste in the form of used cooking oil which is placed in a container in this tool which is useful for pesticides for pests that attack bee colonies. Conclusion: By using this innovative Trigona Sp beehive holder, you can handle non-B3 solid waste in the form of used PMK pipes and tank plates by cutting and shaping them in such a way that it becomes a holder that can place Trigona Sp beehives.

Performance evaluation of hot-wall condenser in a domestic refrigerator

In this study, the heat transfer performance of a hot-wall condenser, which is affected by design parameters, is investigated. In this study, the pipe section form (O/D) variation, which has not been examined so far, is used as a design parameter for condenser performance. Incorporating the specified design parameters, 12 different condenser samples were manufactured. Additionally, a simulation model regarding with the thermal effects was designed for comparing the outputs of experimental results. The parameters are outer diameter of the condenser pipe (4.0 and 4.76 mm), condenser pipe pitch (20, 40, and 60 mm), the section form (O/D) of condenser pipe, and the refrigerant mass flow rate in flow. The results revealed significant findings regarding the impact of different design parameters on the heat transfer rate of the condenser. Specifically, increasing the condenser pipe diameter led to an average heat transfer rate increase of 8.9% and 5.2% by increasing flow rates as double, respectively. The pipe pitch was found to have a notable effect on the heat transfer rates, resulting in average increases of 213%, 47%, and 313% for the 20–40 mm, 40–60 mm, and 20–60 mm transitions, respectively. Specifically, the novel output is the transition from O-to-D pipe configuration, resulting in a maximum 3% increase in the total heat transfer rate.

Floods that often occur are in the form of tidal floods and dispatch floods which cause obstructions to access to and from the village. The water level at some points could reach one meter from the ground, forcing residents to evacuate. To minimize the impact received, a flood warning system is needed by considering the water level in rivers, sea water and also rainfall. This flood warning system works by using simple materials in the form of PVC pipes, flip flops, and alarms which will be installed on the river banks. This system can prevent excessive material and human losses and can save electronic goods. After socialization, residents, especially young people, know how the flood warning system works so they can expand the use of a simple flood warning system. The implementation of community service has an impact, namely increasing the knowledge of young people in making simple flood alarms, reducing material and physical losses due to overflowing floods, and being wary of electronic goods when floods strike.

Research on Multi-Body Collision Dynamics of Ball Cage Flexible Drill Pipe Considering Borehole Curvature

A ball cage flexible drill pipe is a new type of ultra-short-radius drilling tool, which consists of multiple flexible joints hinged together. During the drilling process, the flexible members will come into contact and wear, which reduces the efficiency of load transfer. The multi-body collision contact dynamics model was proposed to study the performance of the ball cage flexible drill pipe. The method considered the influence of the borehole curvature. The kinematic equations of the ball cage flexible drill pipe were established. The Lankarani–Nikravesh collisional contact model was used to characterize the normal contact force, and the Coulomb friction model was used to describe the tangential contact force. The multi-body motion state of the flexible drill pipe was simulated, the contact force distribution of the flexible drill pipe during the motion cycle was analyzed, and the influence of the borehole curvature radius on the size of the flexible joints and the contact force was studied. The results show that the running form of the ball cage flexible drill pipe shows a “folded” shape compared with the initial form; the contact force of different flexible joints is in a state of fluctuation; the normal contact force is much larger than the tangential contact force; the matching relationship between the borehole curvature and the length and radius of the flexible joints is derived, which provides criteria for the design of the flexible joints to ensure the reliability of the flexible drill pipe in large curvature borehole; the borehole curvature has an important influence on the collision contact force and load transfer efficiency of flexible drill pipe.

The effect of heat losses and heat transfer coefficient on the efficiency of the solar air heater collector

In this Article developed the heat balance equations for a solar air heater with a concave air pipe absorber, calculating the heat wastes lost from the barrier structures of the device. In addition, a special emphasis is placed on the issues of optimal placement of concave air pipes, optimal distances are selected between the air pipes. Issues of increasing its heat giving capacity are solved by the shading placement of concave air pipes. The result is an increase in the performance of the device by increasing the coefficient of heat transfer of the solar air heater collector with a concave air pipe absorber. To do this, the movement of concave tube absorbers with different geometric arrangements was studied. Also in this article, a heat balance equation was developed to determine the optimal geometric location of air pipes and the reliability of the results obtained was confirmed. According to the simulations carried out, the placement of a concave-tube in the form of a checkerboard on the surface of the absorber is calculated, perpendicular to the air flow, parallel to the air flow and in the form of a flat air pipe.

ABSTRACT Passive heating, lighting, and ventilation techniques in historic buildings and their sustainability in conjunction with new designs are essential to maintaining a greener, ecological environment. This article describes a framework for identifying and disclosing the passive survival strategies and resulting solutions applied to historic baths in Anatolia. The aim is to first increase knowledge and awareness of ancient systems and to discuss and examine their contemporary inspirations and considerations of existing and new construction technologies. A total of four baths from the Roman, Byzantine, Principalities and Ottoman periods in Anatolia were selected. Their original heating, lighting, and ventilation systems were determined largely through on-site observations, literature review, and archival sources. The results indicate that in today’s modern residential, industrial or commercial buildings, reflections of these ancient technologies and traditional concepts can be observed as the main source of inspiration. They can be seen either in the form of light pipes, underfloor heating systems, or a double-skin façade. The old technologies and solutions of historic baths are mostly sustainable and ecological. Looking back at these historic technologies can inspire further ecological design developments and symbiotic implementation possibilities in new building designs.
