Gravitational wave formation from the collapse of dark energy field configurations

Dark energy is the dominant component of the energy density in the Universe. In a previous paper, we have shown that the collapse of dark energy fields leads to the formation of supermassive black holes with masses comparable to the masses of black holes at the centers of galaxies. Thus, it becomes a pressing issue to investigate the other physical consequences of the collapse of dark energy fields. Given that the primary interactions of dark energy fields with the rest of the Universe are gravitational, it is particularly interesting to investigate the gravitational wave signals emitted during the collapse of dark energy fields. This is the focus of the current work described in this paper. We describe and use the 3+1 BSSN formalism to follow the evolution of the dark energy fields coupled with gravity and to extract the gravitational wave signals. Finally, we describe the results of our numerical computations and the gravitational wave signals produced by the collapse of dark energy fields.

Can Superconducting Cosmic Strings Piercing Seed Black Holes Generate Supermassive Black Holes in the Early Universe?

AbstractThe discovery of a large number of supermassive black holes (SMBH) at redshifts , when the Universe was only 900 million years old, raises the question of how such massive compact objects could form in a cosmologically short time interval. Each of the standard scenarios proposed, involving rapid accretion of seed black holes or black hole mergers, faces severe theoretical difficulties in explaining the short‐time formation of supermassive objects. In this work we propose an alternative scenario for the formation of SMBH in the early Universe, in which energy transfer from superconducting cosmic strings piercing small seed black holes is the main physical process leading to rapid mass increase. As a toy model, the accretion rate of a seed black hole pierced by two antipodal strings carrying constant current is considered. Using an effective action approach, which phenomenologically incorporates a large class of superconducting string models, we estimate the minimum current required to form SMBH with masses of order by . This corresponds to the mass of the central black hole powering the quasar ULAS J112001.48+064124.3 and is taken as a test case scenario for early‐epoch SMBH formation. For GUT scale strings, the required fractional increase in the string energy density, due to the presence of the current, is of order 10−7, so that their existence remains consistent with current observational bounds on the string tension. In addition, we consider an “exotic” scenario, in which an SMBH is generated when a small seed black hole is pierced by a higher‐dimensional string, predicted by string theory. We find that both topological defect strings and fundamental strings are able to carry currents large enough to generate early‐epoch SMBH via our proposed mechanism.

Jetted tidal disruptions of stars as a flag of intermediate mass black holes at high redshifts

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) of stars by single or binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs) brighten galactic nuclei and reveal a population of otherwise dormant black holes. Adopting event rates from the literature, we aim to establish general trends in the redshift evolution of the TDE number counts and their observable signals. We pay particular attention to two types of TDEs which are expected to be observable out to high redshifts, namely (i) jetted TDEs whose luminosity is boosted by relativistic beaming, and (ii) TDEs around binary black holes. We show that the brightest (jetted) TDEs are expected to be produced by massive black hole binaries if the occupancy of intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) in low mass galaxies is high. The same binary population will also provide gravitational wave sources for eLISA. In addition, we find that the shape of the X-ray luminosity function of TDEs strongly depends on the occupancy of IMBHs and could be used to constrain scenarios of SMBH formation. Finally, we make predictions for the expected number of TDEs observed by future X-ray telescopes as a function of their sensitivity limits. We find that an instrument which is 50 times more sensitive than the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board the Swift satellite is expected to trigger ~10 times more events than BAT with 50% of the events coming from z>2. Because of their long decay times, high-redshift TDEs can be mistaken for fixed point sources in deep field surveys such as the 4Ms survey with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and targeted observations of the same deep field with year-long intervals could reveal TDEs. If the occupation fraction of IMBHs is high, 6-20 TDEs are expected in each deep field observed by a telescope 50 times more sensitive than Chandra.

The sustainable growth of the first black holes

Super-Eddington accretion has been suggested as a possible formation pathway of $10^9 \, M_\odot$ supermassive black holes (SMBHs) 800 Myr after the Big Bang. However, stellar feedback from BH seed progenitors and winds from BH accretion disks may decrease BH accretion rates. In this work, we study the impact of these physical processes on the formation of $z \sim 6$ quasar, including new physical prescriptions in the cosmological, data-constrained semi-analytic model GAMETE/QSOdust. We find that the feedback produced by the first stellar progenitors on the surrounding does not play a relevant role in preventing SMBHs formation. In order to grow the $z \gtrsim 6$ SMBHs, the accreted gas must efficiently lose angular momentum. Moreover disk winds, easily originated in super-Eddington accretion regime, can strongly reduce duty cycles. This produces a decrease in the active fraction among the progenitors of $z\sim6$ bright quasars, reducing the probability to observe them.

The Romulus cosmological simulations: a physical approach to the formation, dynamics and accretion models of SMBHs

We present a novel implementation of supermassive black hole (SMBH) formation, dynamics, and accretion in the massively parallel tree+SPH code, ChaNGa. This approach improves the modeling of SMBHs in fully cosmological simulations, allowing for a more de- tailed analysis of SMBH-galaxy co-evolution throughout cosmic time. Our scheme includes novel, physically motivated models for SMBH formation, dynamics and sinking timescales within galaxies, and SMBH accretion of rotationally supported gas. The sub-grid parameters that regulate star formation (SF) and feedback from SMBHs and SNe are optimized against a comprehensive set of z = 0 galaxy scaling relations using a novel, multi-dimensional parameter search. We have incorporated our new SMBH implementation and parameter optimization into a new set of high resolution, large-scale cosmological simulations called Romulus. We present initial results from our flagship simulation, Romulus25, showing that our SMBH model results in SF efficiency, SMBH masses, and global SF and SMBH accretion histories at high redshift that are consistent with observations. We discuss the importance of SMBH physics in shaping the evolution of massive galaxies and show how SMBH feedback is much more effective at regulating star formation compared to SNe feedback in this regime. Further, we show how each aspect of our SMBH model impacts this evolution compared to more common approaches. Finally, we present a science application of this scheme studying the properties and time evolution of an example dual AGN system, highlighting how our approach allows simulations to better study galaxy interactions and SMBH mergers in the context of galaxy-BH co-evolution.

A rumble in the dark: signatures of self-interacting dark matter in supermassive black hole dynamics and galaxy density profiles

We explore for the first time the effect of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on the dark matter (DM) and baryonic distribution in massive galaxies formed in hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, including explicit baryonic physics treatment. A novel implementation of Super-Massive Black Hole (SMBH) formation and evolution is used, as in Tremmel et al.(2015, 2016), allowing to explicitly follow SMBH dynamics at the center of galaxies. A high SIDM constant cross-section is chosen, $\sigma$=10 $\rm cm^2/gr$, to amplify differences from CDM models. Milky Way-like galaxies form a shallower DM density profile in SIDM than they do in CDM, with differences already at 20 kpc scales. This demonstrates that even for the most massive spirals the effect of SIDM dominates over the adiabatic contraction due to baryons. Strikingly, the dynamics of SMBHs differs in the SIDM and reference CDM case. SMBHs in massive spirals have sunk to the centre of their host galaxy in both the SIDM and CDM run, while in less massive galaxies about 80$\%$ of the SMBH population is off-centered in the SIDM case, as opposed to the CDM case in which $\sim$90$\%$ of SMBHs have reached their host's centre. SMBHs are found as far as $\sim$9 kpc away from the centre of their host SIDM galaxy. This difference is due to the increased dynamical friction timescale caused by the lower DM density in SIDM galaxies compared to CDM, resulting in 'core stalling'. This pilot work highlights the importance of simulating in a full hydrodynamical context different DM models combined to SMBH physics to study their influence on galaxy formation.

Supermassive black hole seeds: updates on the “quasi-star model”

LISA will allow us to see the infancy of the universe and gather unique constraints on an outstanding mystery: the formation of supermassive black holes. Here, I review a particular scenario, where black hole seeds are formed from direct collapse of gas at the centre of (proto)-galaxies. I will show that very massive (> 105M⊙) black hole seeds are possible but before confidently claim so the impact of physical ingredients, like internal rotation and super Eddington accretion, need to be fully understood.

On the dynamics of supermassive black holes in gas-rich, star-forming galaxies: the case for nuclear star cluster co-evolution

We introduce a new model for the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the ramses code using sink particles, improving over previous work the treatment of gas accretion and dynamical evolution. This new model is tested against a suite of high-resolution simulations of an isolated, gas-rich, cooling halo. We study the effect of various feedback models on the SMBH growth and its dynamics within the galaxy. In runs without any feedback, the SMBH is trapped within a massive bulge and is therefore able to grow quickly, but only if the seed mass is chosen larger than the minimum Jeans mass resolved by the simulation. We demonstrate that, in the absence of supernovae (SN) feedback, the maximum SMBH mass is reached when active galactic nucleus (AGN) heating balances gas cooling in the nuclear region. When our efficient SN feedback is included, it completely prevents bulge formation, so that massive gas clumps can perturb the SMBH orbit, and reduce the accretion rate significantly. To overcome this issue, we propose an observationally motivated model for the joint evolution of the SMBH and a parent nuclear star cluster (NSC), which allows the SMBH to remain in the nuclear region, grow fast and resist external perturbations. In this scenario, however, SN feedback controls the gas supply and the maximum SMBH mass now depends on the balance between AGN heating and gravity. We conclude that SMBH/NSC co-evolution is crucial for the growth of SMBH in high-z galaxies, the progenitors of massive ellipticals today.

An intermediate-mass black hole in the centre of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae.

Intermediate-mass black holes should help us to understand the evolutionary connection between stellar-mass and super-massive black holes. However, the existence of intermediate-mass black holes is still uncertain, and their formation process is therefore unknown. It has long been suspected that black holes with masses 100 to 10,000 times that of the Sun should form and reside in dense stellar systems. Therefore, dedicated observational campaigns have targeted globular clusters for many decades, searching for signatures of these elusive objects. All candidate signatures appear radio-dim and do not have the X-ray to radio flux ratios required for accreting black holes. Based on the lack of an electromagnetic counterpart, upper limits of 2,060 and 470 solar masses have been placed on the mass of a putative black hole in 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) from radio and X-ray observations, respectively. Here we show there is evidence for a central black hole in 47 Tucanae with a mass of solar masses when the dynamical state of the globular cluster is probed with pulsars. The existence of an intermediate-mass black hole in the centre of one of the densest clusters with no detectable electromagnetic counterpart suggests that the black hole is not accreting at a sufficient rate to make it electromagnetically bright and therefore, contrary to expectations, is gas-starved. This intermediate-mass black hole might be a member of an electromagnetically invisible population of black holes that grow into supermassive black holes in galaxies.

Supermassive black holes from collapsing dark matter Bose–Einstein condensates

The discovery of active galactic nuclei at redshifts 6 suggests that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) formed early on. Growth of the remnants of population III stars by accretion of matter, both baryonic as well as collisionless dark matter (DM), leading up to formation of SMBHs is a very slow process. Therefore, such models encounter difficulties in explaining quasars detected at . Furthermore, massive particles making up collisionless DM have not only so far eluded experimental detection but they also do not satisfactorily explain gravitational structures on small scales.In recent years, there has been a surge in research activities concerning cosmological structure formation that involve coherent, ultra-light bosons in a dark fluid-like or fuzzy cold DM state. In this paper, we study collapse of such ultra-light bosonic halo DM that is in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) phase to give rise to SMBHs on dynamical time scales. Time evolution of such self-gravitating BECs is examined using the Gross–Pitaevskii equation in the framework of time-dependent variational method. Comprised of identical dark bosons of mass m, BECs can collapse to form black holes of mass Meff on time scales ∼108 yrs provided . In particular, ultra-light dark bosons of mass can lead to SMBHs with mass at . Recently observed radio-galaxies in the ELAIS-N1 deep field with aligned jets can also possibly be explained if vortices of a rotating cluster size BEC collapse to form spinning SMBHs with angular momentum , where nW and M are the winding number and mass of a vortex, respectively.

Faint progenitors of luminousz ∼ 6 quasars: Why do not we see them?

Observational searches for faint active nuclei at $z > 6$ have been extremely elusive, with a few candidates whose high-$z$ nature is still to be confirmed. Interpreting this lack of detections is crucial to improve our understanding of high-$z$ supermassive black holes (SMBHs) formation and growth. In this work, we present a model for the emission of accreting BHs in the X-ray band, taking into account super-Eddington accretion, which can be very common in gas-rich systems at high-$z$. We compute the spectral energy distribution for a sample of active galaxies simulated in a cosmological context, which represent the progenitors of a $z \sim 6$ SMBH with $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^9 \, M_\odot$. We find an average Compton thick fraction of $\sim 45\%$ and large typical column densities ($N_H \gtrsim 10^{23} \rm \, cm^2$). However, faint progenitors are still luminous enough to be detected in the X-ray band of current surveys. Even accounting for a maximum obscuration effect, the number of detectable BHs is reduced at most by a factor 2. In our simulated sample, observations of faint quasars are mainly limited by their very low active fraction ($f_{\rm act} \sim 1 \%$), which is the result of short, super-critical growth episodes. We suggest that to detect high-$z$ SMBHs progenitors, large area surveys with shallower sensitivities, such as Cosmos Legacy and XMM-LSS+XXL, are to be preferred with respect to deep surveys probing smaller fields, such as CDF-S.

Gravitational collapse of dark energy field configurations and supermassive black hole formation

Dark energy is the dominant component of the total energy density of our Universe. The primary interaction of dark energy with the rest of the Universe is gravitational. It is therefore important to understand the gravitational dynamics of dark energy. Since dark energy is a low-energy phenomenon from the perspective of particle physics and field theory, a fundamental approach based on fields in curved space should be sufficient to understand the current dynamics of dark energy. Here, we take a field theory approach to dark energy. We discuss the evolution equations for a generic dark energy field in curved space-time and then discuss the gravitational collapse for dark energy field configurations. We describe the 3 + 1 BSSN formalism to study the gravitational collapse of fields for any general potential for the fields and apply this formalism to models of dark energy motivated by particle physics considerations. We solve the resulting equations for the time evolution of field configurations and the dynamics of space-time. Our results show that gravitational collapse of dark energy field configurations occurs and must be considered in any complete picture of our Universe. We also demonstrate the black hole formation as a result of the gravitational collapse of the dark energy field configurations. The black holes produced by the collapse of dark energy fields are in the supermassive black hole category with the masses of these black holes being comparable to the masses of black holes at the centers of galaxies.

NEW CONSTRAINTS ON THE MOLECULAR GAS IN THE PROTOTYPICAL HyLIRGs BRI 1202–0725 AND BRI 1335–0417

ABSTRACT We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array observations of CO( ) line emission and rest-frame 250 GHz continuum emission of the Hyper-Luminous IR Galaxies (HyLIRGs) BRI 1202–0725 (z = 4.69) and BRI 1335–0417 (z = 4.41), with an angular resolution as high as 0.″15. Our low-order CO observations delineate the cool molecular gas, the fuel for star formation in the systems, in unprecedented detail. For BRI 1202–0725, line emission is seen from both extreme starburst galaxies: the quasar host and the optically obscured submm galaxy (SMG), in addition to one of the Lyα emitting galaxies in the group. Line emission from the SMG shows an east–west extension of about 0.″6. For Lyα-2, the CO emission is detected at the same velocity as [C ii] and [N ii], indicating a total gas mass ∼4.0 × 1010 M ⊙. The CO emission from BRI 1335–0417 peaks at the nominal quasar position, with a prominent northern extension (∼1″, a possible tidal feature). The gas depletion timescales are ∼107 years for the three HyLIRGs, consistent with extreme starbursts, while that of Lyα-2 may be consistent with main sequence galaxies. We interpret these sources as major star formation episodes in the formation of massive galaxies and supermassive black holes via gas-rich mergers in the early universe.

RICH KOZAI–LIDOV DYNAMICS IN AN INITIALLY THIN AND ECCENTRIC STELLAR DISK AROUND A SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE

ABSTRACT There is growing evidence of star formation in the vicinity of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in galactic nuclei. A viable scenario for this process assumes infall of a massive gas cloud toward the SMBH and subsequent formation of a dense accretion disk, which gives birth to the young stars. Numerical hydrodynamical models indicate that this star formation process is rather fast and precedes full circularization of the accretion flow, i.e., the new stars are born on elliptic orbits. By means of direct numerical N-body modeling, we show in this paper that the nonzero eccentricity of the stellar disks around the SMBH leads to an onset of various types of the Kozai–Lidov oscillations of a non-negligible subset of individual orbits in the disk, showing a remarkable robustness of this classical mechanism. Among others, we demonstrate that under certain circumstances, the presence of an additional spherical cluster (which is generally known to damp Kozai–Lidov oscillations) may trigger such oscillations as a result of affecting the internal flow of the angular momentum through the disk. We conclude that the Kozai–Lidov oscillations are capable of substantially modifying the initial structure of the disk (its thickness and distribution of eccentricities, in particular).

The New Numerical Galaxy Catalog (ν2GC): An updated semi-analytic model of galaxy and active galactic nucleus formation with large cosmological N-body simulations

Abstract We present a new cosmological galaxy formation model, ν2GC, as an updated version of our previous model νGC. We adopt the so-called “semi-analytic” approach, in which the formation history of dark matter halos is computed by N-body simulations, while the baryon physics such as gas cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback are simply modeled by phenomenological equations. Major updates of the model are as follows: (1) the merger trees of dark matter halos are constructed in state-of-the-art N-body simulations, (2) we introduce the formation and evolution process of supermassive black holes and the suppression of gas cooling due to active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, (3) we include heating of the intergalactic gas by the cosmic UV background, and (4) we tune some free parameters related to the astrophysical processes using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Our N-body simulations of dark matter halos have unprecedented box size and mass resolution (the largest simulation contains 550 billion particles in a 1.12 Gpc h−1 box), enabling the study of much smaller and rarer objects. The model was tuned to fit the luminosity functions of local galaxies and mass function of neutral hydrogen. Local observations, such as the Tully–Fisher relation, the size–magnitude relation of spiral galaxies, and the scaling relation between the bulge mass and black hole mass were well reproduced by the model. Moreover, the model also reproduced well the cosmic star formation history and redshift evolution of rest-frame K-band luminosity functions. The numerical catalog of the simulated galaxies and AGNs is publicly available on the web.

Black hole starvation and bulge evolution in a Milky Way-like galaxy

We present a new zoom-in hydrodynamical simulation, "Erisbh", which follows the cosmological evolution and feedback effects of a supermassive black hole at the center of a Milky Way-type galaxy. ErisBH shares the same initial conditions, resolution, recipes of gas cooling, star formation and feedback, as the close Milky Way-analog "Eris", but it also includes prescriptions for the formation, growth and feedback of supermassive black holes. We find that the galaxy's central black hole grows mainly through mergers with other black holes coming from infalling satellite galaxies. The growth by gas accretion is minimal because very little gas reaches the sub-kiloparsec scales. The final black hole is, at z=0, about 2.6 million solar masses and it sits closely to the position of SgrA* on the MBH-MBulge and MBH-sigma planes, in a location consistent with what observed for pseudobulges. Given the limited growth due to gas accretion, we argue that the mass of the central black hole should be above 10^5 solar masses already at z~8. The effect of AGN feedback on the host galaxy is limited to the very central few hundreds of parsecs. Despite being weak, AGN feedback seems to be responsible for the limited growth of the central bulge with respect to the original Eris, which results in a significantly flatter rotation curve in the inner few kiloparsecs. Moreover, the disk of ErisBH is more prone to instabilities, as its bulge is smaller and its disk larger then Eris. As a result, the disk of ErisBH undergoes a stronger dynamical evolution relative to Eris and around z=0.3 a weak bar grows into a strong bar of a few disk scale lengths in size. The bar triggers a burst of star formation in the inner few hundred parsecs, provides a modest amount of new fuel to the central black hole, and causes the bulge of ErisBH to have, by z=0, a box/peanut morphology.(Abridged)

Supermassive black hole seed formation at high redshifts: long-term evolution of the direct collapse

We use cosmological adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code Enzo zoom-in simulations to study the long term evolution of the collapsing gas within dark matter (DM) halos at high redshifts. This direct collapse process is a leading candidate for rapid formation of supermassive black hole (SMBH) seeds at high z. To circumvent the Courant condition at small radii, we have used the sink particle method, and focus on the evolution on scales ~0.01-10 pc. The collapse proceeds in two stages, with the secondary runaway happening within the central 10 pc, and with no detected fragmentation. The sink particles form when the collapsing gas requires additional refinement of the grid size at the highest refinement level. Their mass never exceeds ~10^3 Mo, with the sole exception of the central seed which grows dramatically to ~ 2 x 10^6 Mo in ~2 Myr, confirming the feasibility of this path to the SMBH. The time variability of angular momentum axis in the accreted gas results in the formation of two misaligned disks --- a small inner disk, and a more massive, outer disk which is inclined by ~45^o to the inner disk. The self-gravity of these disks is heavily diluted --- both disks lie within the Roche limit of the central seed. While the inner disk is geometrically thin and weakly asymmetric, the outer disk flares due to turbulent motions as a result of the massive inflow along a pair of penetrating filaments. The geometry of inflow via filaments determines the dominant and secondary Fourier modes in this disk --- these modes have a non-self-gravitational origin. We do not confirm that m=1 is a principal mode that drives the inflow in the presence of a central massive object. While the positions of the disks depend on the scale chosen to break the self-similar collapse, the overall configuration appears to be generic, and is expected to form when the central seed becomes sufficiently massive.

The imprint of the cosmic supermassive black hole growth history on the 21 cm background radiation

The redshifted 21 cm transition line of hydrogen tracks the thermal evolution of the neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) at "cosmic dawn," during the emergence of the first luminous astrophysical objects (~100 Myr after the Big Bang) but before these objects ionized the IGM (~400-800 Myr after the Big Bang). Because X-rays, in particular, are likely to be the chief energy courier for heating the IGM, measurements of the 21 cm signature can be used to infer knowledge about the first astrophysical X-ray sources. Using analytic arguments and a numerical population synthesis algorithm, we argue that the progenitors of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) should be the dominant source of hard astrophysical X-rays---and thus the primary driver of IGM heating and the 21 cm signature---at redshifts $z < 20$, if (i) they grow readily from the remnants of Population III stars and (ii) produce X-rays in quantities comparable to what is observed from active galactic nuclei and high-mass X-ray binaries. We show that models satisfying these assumptions dominate over contributions to IGM heating from stellar populations, and cause the 21 cm brightness temperature to rise at $z > 20$. An absence of such a signature in the forthcoming observational data would imply that SMBH formation occurred later (e.g. via so-called direct collapse scenarios), that it was not a common occurrence in early galaxies and protogalaxies, or that it produced far fewer X-rays than empirical trends at lower redshifts, either due to intrinsic dimness (radiative inefficiency) or Compton-thick obscuration close to the source.

Bright vigorous winds as signposts of supermassive black hole birth

The formation of supermassive black holes is still an outstanding question. In the quasi-star scenario, black hole seeds experience an initial super-Eddington growth, that in less than a million years may leave a $10^4-10^5$ M$_{\odot}$ black hole at the centre of a protogalaxy at $z \sim 20-10$. Super-Eddington accretion, however, may be accompanied by vigorous mass loss that can limit the amount of mass that reaches the black hole. In this paper, we critically assess the impact of radiative driven winds, launched from the surface of the massive envelopes from which the black hole accretes. Solving the full wind equations coupled with the hydrostatic structure of the envelope, we find mass outflows with rates between a few tens and $10^4$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, mainly powered by advection luminosity within the outflow. We therefore confirm the claim by Dotan, Rossi & Shaviv (2011) that mass losses can severely affect the black hole seed early growth within a quasi-star. In particular, seeds with mass $>10^4$ M$_{\odot}$ can only form within mass reservoirs $ \gtrsim 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$, unless they are refilled at huge rates ($ \gtrsim 100$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). This may imply that only very massive halos ($>10^9$ M$_{\odot}$) at those redshifts can harbour massive seeds. Contrary to previous claims, these winds are expected to be relatively bright ($10^{44}-10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$), blue ($T_{\rm eff} \sim 8000$ K) objects, that while eluding the Hubble Space Telescope, could be observed by the James Webb Space Telescope.

Quasistationary solutions of self-gravitating scalar fields around collapsing stars

Recent work has shown that scalar fields around black holes can form long-lived, quasistationary configurations surviving for cosmological timescales. With this requirement, scalar fields cannot be discarded as viable candidates for dark matter halo models in galaxies around central supermassive black holes (SMBH). One hypothesis for the formation of most SMBHs at high redshift is the gravitational collapse of supermassive stars (SMS) with masses of $\sim10^5 \rm {M_{\odot}}$. Therefore, a constraint for the existence of quasi-bound states of scalar fields is their survival to such dynamic events. To answer this question we present in this paper the results of a series of numerical relativity simulations of gravitationally collapsing, spherically symmetric stars surrounded by self-gravitating scalar fields. We use an ideal fluid equation of state with adiabatic index $\Gamma=4/3$ which is adequate to simulate radiation-dominated isentropic SMSs. Our results confirm the existence of oscillating, long-lived, self-gravitating scalar field configurations around non-rotating black holes after the collapse of the stars.
