Self-powered Schottky barrier photodetectors based on P3HT:PC61BM bulk heterojunction films

By employing the classic system poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl): [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM), organic bulk heterojunction films were applied on an indium tin oxide substrate using a one-step spin-coating method, without requiring any complex manufacturing processes, to obtain self-powered photodetectors (PDs) with a simple preparation process. The fullerene material was introduced to create a bulk heterojunction film with proper phase separation and greatly enrich the donor/acceptor dissociation interface, thus improving the high exciton binding energy and short exciton diffusion distance. The built-in electric field formed by the Schottky junction at the interface between the active layer and electrode can enhance the separation of excitons and the transport of charge carriers, realizing optical detection without external energy sources. Moreover, femtosecond transient absorption was employed to investigate the exciton dynamics in organic films and analyze the working mechanism of self-powered detection performance. The long-lived behavior of carriers and the formation of charge transfer states were further verified, which contributed to the enhanced performance of the device. As a result, the self-powered PD-based Schottky bulk heterojunction presents a high light on/off ratio of over 104 (0 V) and fast response speed with rise and decay times of 33 and 36 µs, respectively, under a 532 nm light illumination. These results provide theoretical and experimental verification of this technique for the development of self-powered PDs in the field of organic materials.

High-fidelity imaging of drug-induced acute gastritis by using a fluorescent and photoacoustic dual-modal probe with good stability in stomach acid

In consideration of deep tissue imaging and signal fidelity, fluorescent-photoacoustic (PA) dual-modal probes are much more desirable. However, dual-modal imaging of gastritis using molecular probes remains a challenge due to the harsh gastric acid environment in the stomach. Based on the positive correlation between gastritis and cell viscosity, stomach acid-stable and viscosity-activated probes could potentially diagnose gastritis. As a proof of concept, herein, a fluorescent and photoacoustic dual-modal probe (named WSP-1) is revealed for the imaging of drug-induced acute gastritis in vivo. WSP-1 exhibits viscosity-dependent fluorescence emission and photoacoustic signals. A rotatable C–C single bond is incorporated into the D-π-A structure of WSP-1, which could facilitate the formation of the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state in a low-viscosity environment (weak fluorescence/PA signal) and the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state in a high-viscosity environment (strong fluorescence/PA signal). WSP-1 has demonstrated the capability to target mitochondria and can be utilized to monitor the viscosity enhancement of cells during inflammation. Most importantly, WSP-1 exhibits good optical and structural stability in gastric acid. By leveraging these desirable features of WSP-1, we have achieved fluorescent and 3D photoacoustic in situ imaging of drug-induced acute gastritis following oral administration of WSP-1.

Donor-acceptor bulk-heterojunction sensitizer for efficient solid-state infrared-to-visible photon up-conversion

Solid-state infrared-to-visible photon up-conversion is important for spectral-tailoring applications. However, existing up-conversion systems not only suffer from low efficiencies and a need for high excitation intensity, but also exhibit a limited selection of materials and complex fabrication processes. Herein, we propose a sensitizer with a bulk-heterojunction structure, comprising both an energy donor and an energy acceptor, for triplet-triplet annihilation up-conversion devices. The up-conversion occurs through charge separation at the donor-acceptor interface, followed by the formation of charge transfer state between the energy donor and annihilator following the spin statistics. The bulk-heterojunction sensitizer ensures efficient charge generation and low charge recombination. Hence, we achieve a highly efficient solid-state up-conversion device with 2.20% efficiency and low excitation intensity (10 mW cm−2) through a one-step solution method. We also demonstrate bright up-conversion devices on highly-flexible large-area substrates. This study introduces a simple and scalable platform strategy for fabricating efficient up-conversion devices.

Limiting factors for charge generation in low-offset fullerene-based organic solar cells

Free charge generation after photoexcitation of donor or acceptor molecules in organic solar cells generally proceeds via (1) formation of charge transfer states and (2) their dissociation into charge separated states. Research often either focuses on the first component or the combined effect of both processes. Here, we provide evidence that charge transfer state dissociation rather than formation presents a major bottleneck for free charge generation in fullerene-based blends with low energetic offsets between singlet and charge transfer states. We investigate devices based on dilute donor content blends of (fluorinated) ZnPc:C60 and perform density functional theory calculations, device characterization, transient absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. We draw a comprehensive picture of how energies and transitions between singlet, charge transfer, and charge separated states change upon ZnPc fluorination. We find that a significant reduction in photocurrent can be attributed to increasingly inefficient charge transfer state dissociation. With this, our work highlights potential reasons why low offset fullerene systems do not show the high performance of non-fullerene acceptors.

Fluorescence of Half-Twisted 10-Acyl-1-methyltetrahydrobenzoquinolines.

The steric interference of proximal dialkyl amino and acyl groups at the peri (1,8) positions of naphthalene affects the intramolecular charge transfer fluorescence. Previous studies indicate that acyl and freely rotating dimethyl amino groups twist toward coplanarity with the naphthalene ring in the excited state. The present study examines the effect of constraining the amino group in a ring. The photophysical properties of 2,2-dimethyl-1-(1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[h]quinolin-10-yl)propan-1-one (4), ethyl 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[h]quinoline-10-carboxylate (5), and 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[h]quinoline-10-carbaldehyde (6) are compared with the dimethyl amino derivatives 2 and 3. Crystal structures of 4-6 show that the amine ring adopts a chair conformation, where the N-methyl group is axial. Computational results suggest that the pyramidal amino group planarizes and twists together with the acyl toward coplanarity in the excited state. The ring structure does not thwart the formation of a planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) state.

Overcrowded 14,14'-Bidibenzo[a,j]anthracenes: Challenges in Syntheses and Atypical Property of Lacking Symmetry-Breaking Charge Transfer (SBCT).

14,14'-Bidibenzo[a,j]anthracenes (BDBAs) were prepared by iridium-catalyzed annulation of 5,5'-biterphenylene with alkynes. The molecular geometries of overcrowded BDBAs were verified by X-ray crystallography. The two dibenzo[a,j]anthryl moieties are connected through the sterically hindered 14 positions, resulting in highly distorted molecular halves. The conformation with a small twist angle between two molecular halves can minimize steric conflicts between the substituents at 1 and 13 positions and the carbon atoms of the central axis, as well as steric clashes between those substituents. One such example is octafluoro-substituted BDBA, where the interplanar angle between two anthryl moieties is approximately 31° (currently the lowest reported value, cf. 81° in 9,9'-bianthracene). The intramolecular interactions and electronic couplings between two molecular halves resulted in upfield 1H NMR signals, redshifted absorption and emission bands, and a reduced HOMO-LUMO gap. Photodynamic investigations on BDBAs indicated that the formation of the conventional symmetry-breaking charge transfer (SBCT) state was suspended by restricted rocking around the central C-C bond. Such a mechanism associated with this highly constrained conformation was examined for the first time.

Synchronously manipulating absorption and nonradiative transition of croconaine via donor engineering for efficient NIR-II photothermal theranostics

Organic molecules with strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR)-II region are highly desired for cancer photothermal theranostics. However, it remains challenges to construct NIR-II photothermal agents with desired optical properties. This study reports a donor engineering approach to simultaneously manipulate the absorption and nonradiative transitions of croconaine dyes. By introducing different donor units with increasing electron donating ability to the backbone, the absorption of the synthesized croconaines were gradually red-shifted to NIR-II region, especially the benzo[c,d]indolium conjugated croconaine (CR1045). The extensive conjugation of CR1045 had a narrower HOMO-LUMO energy gap and strong NIR-II light responsiveness. Importantly, the steric repulsion between this large planar donor and croconate acceptor of CR1045 promotes the formation of a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state, making it more prone to direct the absorbed energy towards heat-producing non-radiative decay rather than other dissipative pathways. And the nanoformulated CR1045 exhibits excellent optoacoustic generation capability and ultrahigh photothermal conversion efficiency (∼84%). In vitro and in vivo investigations confirm good optoacoustic imaging and effective photothermal treatment of tumors. Therefore, this work offers insights into donor regulation for the future development of efficient NIR-II photothermal agents.

In-situ formatting donor-acceptor polymer with giant dipole moment and ultrafast exciton separation

Donor-acceptor semiconducting polymers present countless opportunities for application in photocatalysis. Previous studies have showcased their advantages through direct bottom-up methods. Unfortunately, these approaches often involve harsh reaction conditions, overlooking the impact of uncontrolled polymerization degrees on photocatalysis. Besides, the mechanism behind the separation of electron-hole pairs (excitons) in donor-acceptor polymers remains elusive. This study presents a post-synthetic method involving the light-induced transformation of the building blocks of hyper-cross-linked polymers from donor-carbon-donor to donor-carbon-acceptor states, resulting in a polymer with a substantial intramolecular dipole moment. Thus, excitons are efficiently separated in the transformed polymer. The utility of this strategy is exemplified by the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide synthesis. Encouragingly, our observations reveal the formation of intramolecular charge transfer states using time-resolved techniques, confirming transient exciton behavior involving separation and relaxation. This light-induced method not only guides the development of highly efficient donor-acceptor polymer photocatalysts but also applies to various fields, including organic solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and sensors.

Intramolecular charge transfer character of D-π-A chromophores with modulating the subunits sequence of π-bridge

Two D-B-A compounds (TRD and TTRD) were designed with the different bridges (B1 and B2) consisting of T and TT moieties. They were synthesized and investigated by UV–Vis spectra, steady state emission spectra, X-ray diffraction, electrochemical measurement, the photovoltaic performances and theoretical calculation. The large Stokes shift suggested the formation of an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state in the excited state. TTRD based device showed high short-circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF). It was essential to understanding the underlying mechanism caused by the subtle structural difference of the two spacers. The results showed that the B2 bridge extending the electron increment region has shown a significant improvement for excitation delocalization, which played a crucial role in improving effective dissociation of the ICT excitons, leading to the increase of photogenerated charge carriers.

Mechanistic insights into diversified photoluminescence behaviours of BF2 complexes of N-benzoyl 2-aminobenzothiazoles.

Many BF2 complexes of heteroaromatics are well known for their dual-state emission (DSE) properties. However, AIE and ACQ effects have also been observed in certain cases. To date, no rational explanations have been proposed for these uncommon photoluminescence (PL) behaviours. The current research prepared four BF2 complexes of N-benzoyl 2-aminobenzothiazoles with diversified photoluminescence (PL) properties as model compounds and utilized quantum chemical calculation tools to address this issue. Theoretical calculations revealed that the electron-donating groups (EDGs) at the para-position of the exocyclic phenyl ring exert significant influence on their ground-state electronic structures and vertical excitation features. Potential energy curve (PEC) analysis showed that the exocyclic phenyl ring and NMe2 could not function as effective rotors due to elevated energy barriers. Only the NPh2 of BFBB-3 could spontaneously rotate ∼60° to induce the formation of an emissive twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state. The two-channel model involving both vibronic relaxation and S0/S1 surface crossing revealed that the drastic narrowing of the S1/S0 energy gap in the region approaching minimun energy conical intersection (MECI) led to the generation of a dark state in BFBB-1. The small energy barrier to access the dark-state region makes the resulting fast internal conversion a competitive channel for excited-state deactivation. In contrast, the presence of EDGs in BFBB-2 and 4 inhibits this pathway, thereby resulting in intense fluorescence emissions in solution. In addition, crystallographic analysis illustrated that the F atoms perpendicular to the polyheterocycle promoted a slipped face-to-face packing mode and enhanced intermolecular interactions. The efficiencies of their solid-state emissions are mainly affected by the degree of π-π overlaps.

Promoting intersystem crossing by charge transfer state of dimers for persistent room temperature phosphorescence

Efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) is essential for phosphorescence emission. The charge transfer (CT) state is traditionally constructed by highly twisted donor-acceptor type structures to facilitate the ISC process. However, the highly twisted structural properties limit the diversity of room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) molecules. By establishing the CT state in the intermolecular dimers structure, the dependence on the distorted donor-acceptor in the single-molecule design can be well eliminated. Based on this strategy, three novel pure organic luminescent molecules with long afterglow and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) property were designed and synthesized. All of those exhibited triple emission, including prompt fluorescence (PF), delayed fluorescence (DF) and persistent RTP (pRTP) emission. In particular, CzC4-PhCN showed great potential for application in the field of anti-counterfeiting with its ultralong phosphorescent lifetime of 862 ms. Single crystal analysis and theoretical calculation revealed that the formation of CT states of intermolecular dimers effectively reduced ΔEST and promoted ISC process. This study would be highly instructive for realizing efficient ISC process and high-efficiency pRTP emission in pure organic systems.

PLQ−sim: A computational tool for simulating photoluminescence quenching dynamics in organic donor/acceptor blends

Photoluminescence Quenching Simulator (PLQ−Sim) is a user−friendly software to study the photoexcited state dynamics at the interface between two organic semiconductors forming a blend: an electron donor (D), and an electron acceptor (A). Its main function is to provide substantial information on the photophysical processes relevant to organic photovoltaic and photothermal devices, such as charge transfer state formation and subsequent free charge generation or exciton recombination. From input parameters provided by the user, the program calculates the transfer rates of the D/A blend and employs a kinetic model that provides the photoluminescence quenching efficiency for initial excitation in the donor or acceptor. When calculating the rates, the user can choose to use disorder parameters to better describe the system. In addition, the program was developed to address energy transfer phenomena that are commonly present in organic blends. The time evolution of state populations is also calculated providing relevant information for the user. In this article, we present the theory behind the kinetic model, along with suggestions for methods to obtain the input parameters. A detailed demonstration of the program, its applicability, and an analysis of the outputs are also presented. PLQ−Sim is license free software that can be run via dedicated webserver nanocalc.org or downloading the program executables (for Unix, Windows, and macOS) from the PLQ-Sim repository on GitHub.

Computational chemistry‐assisted design of hydrazine‐based fluorescent molecular rotor for viscosity sensors

AbstractDeep understanding of the fluorescence quenching mechanisms of probes plays a crucial role in developing their practical applications. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of hydrazine‐based fluorescence probes needs to be clarified up to the present. Herein, we designed and synthesized a new hydrazine‐based fluorescence probe (HA‐Na) based on the naphthalimide skeleton. We clarified the molecular origin of the non‐fluorescence of this probe with the aid of computational chemistry and spectroscopic analysis. We showed that the significant rotation of the hydrazine group in the excited state potential energy surface, which caused the complete charge separation, was responsible for the fluorescence quenching of the probe in an organic solvent. Once the rotation was prevented in an aggregative state or high‐viscosity solution, the fluorescence of the probe recovered. In other words, the fluorescence quenching mechanism of hydrazine‐based fluorescence probes was attributed to the formation of a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state. More importantly, we demonstrated that this fluorescence molecular rotor could be used to monitor the autophagy process in living cells by detecting lysosomal viscosity changes during starvation. Altogether, this work provides an essential theoretical basis for the developing potential hydrazine‐based fluorescence molecular rotors.

Donor-Acceptor-Donor Triads with Flexible Spacers: Deciphering Complex Photophysics for Targeted Materials Design.

The complex photokinetics of donor-acceptor-donor triads with varying flexible spacer lengths (n = 4-10 carbon atoms) are investigated in liquid and solid solution, as well as in crystals, by steady-state and transient fluorescence spectroscopy combined with computational studies. For the short spacer (n = 4) in liquid solution, dynamic charge transfer (CT) state formation with subsequent, efficient exciplex emission is observed, effectively competing with quenching through electron transfer (eT) via a radical ion pair. In solid solution, a fluorescent CT static complex is formed upon freezing for all spacer lengths. This allows to reassign the observations of a former seminal report on stimuli-responsive high-contrast fluorescence on/off switching in films of the triads (Adv. Mater. 2012, 24, 5487), now providing a holistic picture on varying spacer length. In fact, external stimuli of the film by modulating the geometry of the CT complex, which results in on/off fluorescence switching (for n > 4) or in a change of the emission color (n = 4). Multi-anionic polymer templated aggregation induced emission of berberine and its application for protamine sensing

In recent years exploration of aggregation induced emission from the naturally occurring luminogens has garnered significant attention across the globe due to their widespread applications in diverse fields of modern-day research. Herein, we delineate multi-anionic polymer, polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) templated aggregation induced emission (AIE) of a medically important and naturally origin alkaloid, berberine (BBR) and its application towards the quantification of an important bio-analyte, protamine (Pr). Cationic BBR at the vicinity of the polyanionic PSS, partially loses its positive charge which causes the reduction in the electrostatic repulsion between the adjacent dye molecules, promoting their aggregation via π-π staking over the polymer surface. This substantially changes the microenvironment of the dye surrounding, leading to the lowering in its structural swiftness and tendency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state formation. Thus, the dye exhibits amplified emission in the aggregated state. Increase of average lifetime and sluggish nature of anisotropy decay of BBR in the presence of PSS support structural confinement and weakening of non-radiative deexcitation pathways for the dye through the formation of BBR-PSS supramolecular assembly. The formed BBR-PSS assembly displays high sensitivity towards external parameters like ionic strength, temperature but unresponsive to a wide range of pH. Importantly, BBR-PSS has been found to be highly sensitive and selective towards an important polypeptide, Pr. Owing to its high positive charge density, Pr disintegrates the BBR-PSS complex, producing fluorescence turn-off response for the BBR-PSS complex which enables us to quantify Pr in aqueous solution. Notably, this AIE based complex is quite efficient to detect protamine even in 1% human serum matrix as low as ∼ 89 nM in spite of presence of various other interfering bioanalytes.

Correlating the Hybridization of Local‐Exciton and Charge‐Transfer States with Charge Generation in Organic Solar Cells

AbstractIn organic solar cells with very small energetic‐offset (ΔELE − CT), the charge‐transfer (CT) and local‐exciton (LE) states strongly interact via electronic hybridization and thermal population effects, suppressing the non‐radiative recombination. Here, we investigated the impact of these effects on charge generation and recombination. In the blends of PTO2:C8IC and PTO2:Y6 with very small, ultra‐fast CT state formation was observed, and assigned to direct photoexcitation resulting from strong hybridization of the LE and CT states (i.e., LE‐CT intermixed states). These states in turn accelerate the recombination of both CT and charge separated (CS) states. Moreover, they can be significantly weakened by an external‐electric field, which enhanced the yield of CT and CS states but attenuated the emission of the device. This study highlights that excessive LE‐CT hybridization due to very low , whilst enabling direct and ultrafast charge transfer and increasing the proportion of radiative versus non‐radiative recombination rates, comes at the expense of accelerating recombination losses competing with exciton‐to‐charge conversion process, resulting in a loss of photocurrent generation.

Charge Separation from Triplet Excited States in Nonfullerene Acceptor‐Based Organic Solar Cells

Suppressing charge recombination is pivotal for further improving the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs). The bimolecular recombination of free charge carriers leads to the formation of both singlet and triplet charge transfer (CT) states at a ratio of 1:3 when considering simple spin statistics, meaning that charge recombination via the triplet excited state is the main deactivation channel for OSCs. Although the formation of local triplet excitons through back charge transfer from triplet CT states is thought to be a terminal loss process, it is shown that charge separation from triplet excitons can occur in nonfullerene acceptor (NFA)‐based OSCs. To reveal the triplet exciton dynamics, a triplet sensitizer PtTPBP is doped into an OSC consisting of PM6 and Y6 as an electron donor and acceptor, respectively. Upon photoexcitation of PtTPBP, triplet excitons are formed, which subsequently transfer their energy to Y6, resulting in Y6 triplet excitons formation. Based on transient absorption and external quantum efficiency measurements, clear experimental evidence of charge photogeneration from Y6 triplet excitons at the PM6:Y6 interface is provided. This study highlights the importance of minimizing the energy difference between the singlet and triplet excited states of NFAs to suppress charge recombination.

Engineering Exciton Dynamics with Synthetic DNA Scaffolds.

ConspectusExcitons are the molecular-scale currency of electronic energy. Control over excitons enables energy to be directed and harnessed for light harvesting, electronics, and sensing. Excitonic circuits achieve such control by arranging electronically active molecules to prescribe desired spatiotemporal dynamics. Photosynthetic solar energy conversion is a canonical example of the power of excitonic circuits, where chromophores are positioned in a protein scaffold to perform efficient light capture, energy transport, and charge separation. Synthetic systems that aim to emulate this functionality include self-assembled aggregates, molecular crystals, and chromophore-modified proteins. While the potential of this approach is clear, these systems lack the structural precision to control excitons or even test the limits of their power. In recent years, DNA origami has emerged as a designer material that exploits biological building blocks to construct nanoscale architectures. The structural precision afforded by DNA origami has enabled the pursuit of naturally inspired organizational principles in a highly precise and scalable manner. In this Account, we describe recent developments in DNA-based platforms that spatially organize chromophores to construct tunable excitonic systems. The high fidelity of DNA base pairing enables the formation of programmable nanoscale architectures, and sequence-specific placement allows for the precise positioning of chromophores within the DNA structure. The integration of a wide range of chromophores across the visible spectrum introduces spectral tunability. These excitonic DNA-chromophore assemblies not only serve as model systems for light harvesting, solar conversion, and sensing but also lay the groundwork for the integration of coupled chromophores into larger-scale nucleic acid architectures.We have used this approach to generate DNA-chromophore assemblies of strongly coupled delocalized excited states through both sequence-specific self-assembly and the covalent attachment of chromophores. These strategies have been leveraged to independently control excitonic coupling and system-bath interaction, which together control energy transfer. We then extended this framework to identify how scaffold configurations can steer the formation of symmetry-breaking charge transfer states, paving the way toward the design of dual light-harvesting and charge separation DNA machinery. In an orthogonal application, we used the programmability of DNA chromophore assemblies to change the optical emission properties of strongly coupled dimers, generating a series of fluorophore-modified constructs with separable emission properties for fluorescence assays. Upcoming advances in the chemical modification of nucleotides, design of large-scale DNA origami, and predictive computational methods will aid in constructing excitonic assemblies for optical and computing applications. Collectively, the development of DNA-chromophore assemblies as a platform for excitonic circuitry offers a pathway to identifying and applying design principles for light harvesting and molecular electronics.

Surficial amino groups coupling induced concentration-dependent fluorescence and fluorescence quantum yield of nitrogen-dopped carbon quantum dots via efficient charge transfer.

Modification of surficial functional groups among carbon quantum dots (CQDs) has been considered an efficient approach to regulate the fluorescence emission of CQDs. However, the mechanism of how surficial functional groups affect fluorescence is vague which fundamentally limits the further applications of CQDs. Here we report the concentration-dependent fluorescence and fluorescence quantum yield of nitrogen-dopped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs). At high concentrations (≥0.188g/L), fluorescence redshift occurs accompanied with decrease in fluorescence quantum yield. Fluorescence excitation spectra and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps calculations show that energy levels of excited states of N-CQDs are relocated via the coupling of surficial amino groups among N-CQDs. Furthermore, electron density difference maps and broadened fluorescence spectra obtained from both experimental measurement and theoretical calculation further confirm that the coupling of surficial amino groups dominates the fluorescence property and verify the formation of charge-transfer state of N-CQDs complex at high concentrations which provides pathways for efficient charge transfer. Given that charge-transfer state induced fluorescence loss and fluorescence spectra broadening are the typical characteristics of organic molecules, CQDs exhibit the optical properties of both quantum dots and organic molecules.
