Necessity of Studying the Subject Public Performance in Formal Higher Education at the Faculties of Social Sciences

Communication skills have become extremely important for successful communication in today’s time. As integral part of professional development of each individual, particular attention is paid to the skills of personal and public presentation. Further development of information and communication technologies has inevitably led to various forms of public appearance, whether it is a presentation of a product or new projects for different kinds of audience. However, formal education does not attach sufcient importance to public speech and public performance. More precisely, since the modern labour market requires adequate communication skills and knowledge, it would be necessary to implement a legal curriculum by introducing subjects of public speaking and public presenting in Formal Higher Education, specifcally in each curriculum of all faculties of social sciences. Such a reform in higher education is certainly the frst step in the professional development and democratic progress of the whole society.

The formation of a professionally-oriented communicative competence of foreign students-economists by means of distance technologies

The article deals with the use of foreign language distance learning for first-year foreign students of economic specialties. The implementation of distance learning is one of the ways to modernize the education in Ukraine in the context of globalization and the intensive development of information technologies. Distance technologies are now widely used in many fields of education, especially when teaching a foreign language to inophones. Creating an effective learning system, based on information technology, is an urgent task at all levels of education. One of the systems focused on the professional development of future specialists is the system of teaching students a foreign language using information technology. The possibilities of organizing the educational process are not limited to traditional and distance learning. There is a significant educational sector in which distance learning cannot be fully applied, but individual elements of e-learning can be used (in particular, distance learning technologies). It is referred to full-time and part-time (1-2 courses) forms of higher education. The mixed learning has become a special role as a more perfect model of the educational process organization, which takes the advantage of distance learning and compensates for these disadvantages. To improve the organization of the educational process for the language training of foreign students, we consider appropriate to use the materials of distance courses in the models of mixed learning. The options for integrating distance learning into the traditional system of language training for foreigners in the mixed learning models have been analyzed. When integrating the model into a traditional educational process at this stage of foreigners' training, it is suggested to use the distance course developed by us with the prevailing classroom component, because the degree of students' independent work in learning the teaching material of the discipline in the first year is not high. The structure and content of the distance course «Foreign Language» (educational-professional sphere of communication connection), designed on the Moodle platform, are considered in the article. The importance of using distance technologies in the process of organizing language training for foreign students is noted. It contributes to the formation of professional competence of future specialists in the field of economics.

Promoting the well-being of higher education: Re-engineering of transnational nursing education

Internationalization of nursing education has become a priority of academic institutions’ strategic plans and visions allowing for greater autonomy and inter-connectedness of the nursing profession. South African universities have, in recent years, engaged in international partnerships, influencing the delivery and facilitation of transnational nursing education (TNE) or cross-border nursing education, involving the steady increase of international student enrolment, particularly from other African nations. Whilst, much has been written about international partnerships relevant to other forms of higher education, minimal research has been done and reported on for cross-border nursing education and partnerships. This provided the rationale for this study to examine and explore TNE challenges by using actual participant examples and experiences. Using a qualitative, multiple case-study approach to sample local, national and international nursing education institutions, academic leaders and nurse graduates, the study attempted to identify challenges and best operating practices in TNE implementation and facilitation. The study aimed to highlight regulatory, administrative and quality assurance factors that challenged TNE’s successful delivery and findings revealed that these programmes are still challenged alluding to it being a ‘for profit’ arrangement. The study, further concluded that, for international students to adapt academically and socially and be in a position to fulfil the requirements of their respective academic programmes, a culturally and socially inclusive teaching and learning environment needed to be provided. This will ensure that the standard of the programme remained consistently high and globally competitive increasing the credibility of the educational institution and the country’s higher education system.

Mentoring and professional identity formation for teaching stream faculty

Purpose Peer-to-peer (P2P) mentorship has been identified as an important component of professional identity formation in higher education (HE). This may be especially true for education-focused or teaching stream (TS) faculty to thrive in times of changing organizational structures and work environments. The purpose of this paper is to present a critical reflection on the experiences in a faculty P2P mentoring for teaching program and considers the ways in which such programs can influence professional identity formation among TS academics. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a matched faculty mentorship pair from Nursing and Chemistry disciplines uses critical reflection as a process of inquiry to interpret their experiences of building and sustaining an effective mentoring relationship as part of the P2P program, and to consider implications for professional identity formation and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Findings Through the P2P program, the authors discovered that establishment of clear goals, a commitment to teaching and mentoring processes, and a mutual desire to build a relationship based on authenticity and reciprocity resulted in positive short- and long-term impacts on instructional practices. Professional identity was strengthened through intentional engagement and the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers, contributing to a renewed sense of confidence and commitment. Originality/value Interest in examining professional identity formation in HE has been growing over the past decade. This paper is novel in the critical reflection on a structured peer mentorship initiative through the lens of professional identity formation, with implications for planning and executing mentoring programs for TS faculty.

PENGARUH CREDIBILITY DAN ATTRACTIVENESS ENDORSER TERHADAP PROSES PEMILIHAN POLITEKNIK LP3I JAKARTA SEBAGAI TEMPAT KULIAH

<p><strong><em>Abstract</em></strong></p><p><em>Many Polytechnics, as vocational education providers offer education services even by providing guaranteed employment before graduating from college with attractive promotional programs, even by cutting celebrities. One side of the government has educated the public to continue their education on vocational education, but on the other hand, the number of Polytechnic enthusiasts remains much smaller than other forms of higher education. This study aims to determine the responses of respondents to the credibility and attractiveness endorsers of the Polytechnic LP3I Jakarta (PLJ), the PLJ selection process as a place of study, as well as the influence of PLJ credibility and attractiveness towards the PLJ selection process as a place of study. This research method uses descriptive verification method, with a regression analysis tool with SPSS 16. The results show that the credibility and attractiveness of PLJ endorsers as well as the PLJ selection process as a lecture place are responded well at a good level by respondents, besides that there is an influence from the credibility and attractiveness of PLJ endorsers to the PLJ selection process as a place of study.</em></p><strong><em>Keywords:</em></strong><em> Credibility, Attractiveness, Endorser, Selection Process.</em>

ENGLISH WRITING NEEDS FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES IN FORMAL HIGHER EDUCATION

The study aimed to get the understanding about the learners’ needs of English writing skill for academic purposes in formal higher education. As a part of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP) should play an important role in English teaching for non English program, specifically in higher formal education. This is a descriptive research that used observation, questionaire and interview. The data analysis and interpretation indicates that, 1) Learners’ proficiency in English writing for Academic Purposes in formal higher education is a must for use to enhance the learners’ academic performance. It is important for the lecturer to provide the suitable learning material and learning technique based on the requirement; 2) Learners’ English writing skill for academic purposes needs require ability in summarizing, paraphrasing, writing in academic genres like essays, reports and literature reviews, and writing in rhetorical-functional like explaining, defining and drawing conclusion

A gênese da Extensão Universitária brasileira no contexto de formação do Ensino Superior

We present in this article a preliminary study of how the evolution of the university extension in its period of formation took place. The objective of this text is to review how the extension was formed, from the initial moment of Higher Education in Brazil until the educational reform of the 1930s. The findings point out to an embryonic thought wrought through events marked by social and political factors, which took place in the formation of Higher Education, especially in the context of Educational Reforms.

The green economy learning assessment South Africa

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to share and analyse the methodology and findings of the 2016 Green Economy Learning Assessment South Africa, including learning needs identified with reference to the competency framings of Scharmer (2009) and Wiek et al. (2011); and implications for university and work-based sustainability education, broadly conceptualised in a just transitions framework.Design/methodology/approachThe assessment was conducted using desktop policy reviews and an audit of sustainability education providers, online questionnaires to sector experts, focus groups and interviews with practitioners driving green economy initiatives.FindingsPolicy monitoring and evaluation, and education for sustainable development, emerged as key change levers across nine priority areas including agriculture, energy, natural resources, water, transport and infrastructure. The competencies required to drive sustainability in these areas were clustered as technical, relational and transformational competencies for: making the case; integrated sustainable development planning; strategic adaptive management and expansive learning; working across organisational units; working across knowledge fields; capacity and organisational development; and principle-based leadership. Practitioners develop such competencies through formal higher education and short courses plus course-activated networks and “on the job” learning.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper adds to the literature on sustainability competencies and raises questions regarding forms of hybrid learning suitable for developing technical, relational and transformative competencies.Practical implicationsA national learning needs assessment methodology and tools for customised organisational learning needs assessments are shared.Originality/valueThe assessment methodology is novel in this context and the workplace-based tools, original.

A \u2018home-international\u2019 comparative analysis of widening participation in UK higher education

Since devolution of education policy to the four ‘home’ nations of the UK, distinct approaches to addressing social inequalities in higher education participation have developed across the four jurisdictions (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). From a critical examination of 12 policy documents, this paper presents a comparative policy analysis of the qualitatively distinct ways that inequalities in higher education are conceptualised across the home nations. Basil Bernstein’s theoretical ideas are drawn on to help unearth distinctions in their beliefs about the underlying nature of educational inequalities. These can be understood in relation to their degree of closeness to either neoliberal or social democratic ideological positions, and we show that the home nations of the UK place differing emphases on what form of higher education they aim to widen access to, and how they intend to achieve this.

New Media in Formal and Non-formal Higher Education in Social Sciences

IT-era has changed not only the notion of intercultural communication worldwide, but also every aspect of human reality. In this paper, the authors present the application of electronic media in formal and non-formal education in Croatian higher education institutions on the example of the Faculty of Law, University of Osijek. Special attention is paid to specific computer programmes, language databases and tools for machine translation and machine-assisted translation used in the teaching process within the Lifelong Learning Programme for Lawyer-Linguists as a new type of non-formal interdisciplinary education delivered at that faculty. In the introductory part, the authors discuss the role of new media in formal higher education and present results of a questionnaire conducted among teaching staff of the Faculty of Law Osijek related to application of the Internet and other new IT-media in specific courses. The main part of the paper is focused on the analysis of the course Online Translation Tools and EU Vocabulary, carried out within the Lifelong Learning Programme for Lawyer-Linguists. Teaching contents of that course are delivered by using computer technology (translation tools and databases accessible online), which serves as a medium for teaching translation. Simultaneously, instructing students in proper and skilful usage of those media represents the principal goal of that course. In the concluding part, the authors try to determine the role of new media and IT in formal and non-formal types of tertiary education in the future.

Коучинг як педагогічна технологія студентоцентричного навчання у ВНЗ

The article analyzes the concept of coaching as a pedagogical technology of student-centred learning. Coaching meets the goals of student-centred learning. Because of its high efficiency in other areas, it is actively distributed in the higher education system. The widespread definitions of the concept of coaching in education are widespread in the national science. Considered its distinctive features.The transformation of the goals of the teacher as a coach is described, unlike the mentor or tutor. The task of the teacher as a coach in the high school is defined: assistance to students in acguiring professional competencies, elimination of problems on the way to meeting the needs in the personal and professional fields by mobilizing and implementing the internal potential of the individual. The task of the teacher is to organize the process in such a way as to promote the students knowledge and professional development. The peculiarities of the organization of communication of subjects of the educational process in higher educational process in higher educational establishments with the use of elements of coaching in classes of various forms in higher education are considered.They are based on well-structured and clearly structured questions for specifying the goal, seeking action options and opportunities for visualizing goals and their implementation, and gaining valuable experience from students. It requires a higher level teacher of communication skills.The coaching approach enhances the culture of teaching, which in the context of student-centered learning is re-interpreted through learning. The task of the teacher is to organize the process so that teaching contributes to the teaching, professional development and self-realization of students.The result of dialogic communication with the use of elements of coaching should be the acquisition of valuable experience by students in the joint creative activity, understanding its importance for educational and professional development and the fullest possible realization of its own resources.

Supply creates its own demand: the great multi-billion rupee coaching business in India

Coaching classes and private tuitions have become ubiquitous in the lives of Indian students. Every single school student who was interviewed was found to be taking tuitions for regular studies and 40% of these school students take coaching classes for courses outside the purview of regular studies. Out of 80 college students covered in this study, 56 took private tuitions for the college syllabus and 25 took coaching for professional examinations. Students who attend coaching class feel well prepared for the examinations as they are taught according to the examination pattern. Private coaching expenditures can be substantial for these students by Indian standards considering that the formal higher education in India is heavily subsidised. The rising trend towards taking private tuitions in India strongly reflects the poor quality of education being imparted in schools and colleges. One possible response could be making available remedial education in schools and colleges itself.

Access Denied: Ending the Exclusion of Disabled Students From Media Production Courses in Higher Education

As the acceptance of media literacy increases among educators, media producers and consumers, one group is often missing from the dialogue—persons with disabilities. This absence is witnessed in the marginalized media depictions of the disabled. To gain entry into the media professions, some form of higher education is required. Using muted group theory as a backdrop, this work, a narrative analysis of the author’s experience with students with disabilities in media production courses, explores the de facto exclusion of persons with disabilities in such classes, due to the poorly outfitted and non-compliant nature of audio and video production facilities.

Exploring interpersonal recognition as a facilitator of students’ academic and professional identity formation in higher education

ABSTRACTA large body of work shows that the development of students’ academic and professional identity positively predicts achievement in higher education. Despite this, there is also evidence that students have great difficulty developing both types of identity. Drawing from Honneth’s [2003a. Behovet for anerkendelse. En tekstsamling [The Need for Personal Recognition. A Text Collection. Redigeret af Rasmus Willig. København: Hans Reitzels Forlag; Honneth, A. 1992 [2006]. Kamp om anerkendelse [The Struggle for Recognition]. København: Hans Reitzels Forlag] work on the importance of recognition, we examined the perceived barriers to forming an academic and professional identity in a qualitative study among 26 Danish and 11 Australian university students. The results reveal that while both types of identity formations were contingent on different forms of recognition, there was also evidence that students perceived all three forms of interpersonal recognition (respect, solidarity, empathy) beneficial in forming academic and professional identity. More specifically, students needed interpersonal recognition as a response to validate an academic identity, and also as a creating source for developing a professional identity. Lacking social interaction possibilities with educators hindered recognition and students’ identity formations.

We examine, using the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), the relationship between stock market participation and college enrollment and completion, with attention to the presence or absence of student loan debt.

The Role of Public Communication in Establishing the Theological Educational System in Russia in XVIII – Early XIX Century

Abstract The emergence of special Church schools, colleges and seminaries as part of the formation of higher education in Russia in the XVIII century is considered in the article. Creation of a separate linked structure of theological educational institutions is analyzed in connection with the ecclesiastical realities of the time as well as the influence of University reforms and the expansion of European educational ideas. Exploring social, religious and political communications makes it possible to trace the origins of the main provisions, laid down as the basis of the complete system of theological education in Russia.

Justification of criteria and indicators of formation level of professional competence of future software engineers in ma system

The MA system in Ukraine is at the stage of formation, especially in the questions of organization and functioning, formation of educational programs, methodical support. But the popularity of MA permanently grows; it can be defined as one of prospective forms of higher education that appears and develops most successfully at scientific infrastructure and real scientific-pedagogic schools. The main contradictions become more acute: non-conformity between the level of modern undergraduate software engineer, his personal professional potential and the demands, made in professional activity; and also between the necessity of realization of professional-pedagogical activity of MA students and the reproducing character of learning process at higher school, fast development of technologies and slow renewal of the content of education and program-technical support. This very fact actualizes the problem of elaboration and introduction of criteria and indicators of formation level of professional competence of the future software engineers in MA system

Student formation in higher education: teachers’ approaches matter

ABSTRACTTeaching in higher education encompasses more than merely helping students develop knowledge and skills. It entails engaging students in their own formation as persons, professionals and citizens. From this perspective, this article investigates how approaches to teaching academic writing contribute to formation. By analysing a case from initial teacher education in Norway, we identify and examine one teacher educator’s beliefs about writing and his approaches to teaching writing. Theoretical framework rests on six discourses of writing developed by Roz Ivanič and on the formative possibilities and constraints embedded in these different literacy discourses. Thus, we provide students’ experien-ces with this teacher’s approaches and discuss what formation his approaches seem to have initiated. The findings point to the need for more critical reflection on the formative impact of teaching approaches in higher education more generally.

The outcome of constructive alignment between open educational services and learners’ needs, employability and capabilities development: Heutagogy and transformative migration among underprivileged learners in Rwanda

AbstractWhile teachers play an important role in education and supporting learning, many learners in under-resourced settings are not privileged to have access to teachers. Some of these underprivileged learners deal with the issue by engaging in self-determined and self-directed learning. Their efforts sometimes pay off with access to formal higher education and financial resources they would not access otherwise. This paper reports and discusses data from interviews with two secondary education graduates who hunted and learned on their own notes from the field of Math–Physique (Mathematics and Physics), took national exams as non-formal learners and won government sponsorship and student loans that are highly competitive in Rwanda. The informants subsequently completed their undergraduate education in Physics and Applied Mathematics, respectively. MINANGKABAU CLERGIES AND THE WRITING OF HADITH

As one of the barns in the Islamic scholars throughout Indonesian archipelago, many Minangkabau scientists in the field of hadith had born figures spelled out with no exception. Trend of works by scholars of Minang in the field of hadith had also shown its own special evidences. Not only the work of translation and Sharh were generated, but also the original works in the field of hadith even drafted in Arabic. The main purpose of this article is to introduce a number of works on hadith and the science of hadith generated by the egg heads of Minangkabau, typically in the 20th century. As for example, Professor Mahmud Yunus, Engku Mudo Zainuddin Hamidy, Ustaz Fachruddin Husain Datuk Majo Indo, Professor Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Buya Mawardi and Ustaz Muhammad Oemar Bakry Besar Datuk Tan. This study inspired cutting-edge scholars, even if they were graduates of local Surau and Madrasah, glorious hadith’s books of high-value compilation were published similar to the context of riwayah-dirayah hadith, fiqh al-hadith or mushthalah hadith. The works were worthy triggers the spirit and inspiration of Muslim intellectuals today for innovation and transformation. In addition, the recent Muslim intellectual were exposed to a lot of formal higher education and academic degree holders, to be more productive in the delivering of similar treasury with the supports of sophisticated modern technology. Above all, the triggers should have been for the sake of preserving the writings of hadith in this beloved country
