High School Curriculum and Cognitive Function in the Eighth Decade of Life.

Formal educational attainment, or years of schooling, has a well-established positive effect on cognitive health across the life course. We hypothesized that the content and difficulty of the curriculum influence this relationship, such that more challenging curricula in high school lead to higher levels of socioeconomic attainment in adulthood and, in turn, to better cognitive outcomes in older adulthood. We estimated multilevel structural equation models (MSEMs) in data from 2,405 individuals who attended one of 1,312 US high schools in 1960 and participated in the Project Talent Aging Study in 2018. A college preparatory curriculum and a greater number of semesters of math and science in high school were positively related to word recall and verbal fluency at an average age of 75. Effects were robust to controlling for adolescent cognitive ability, academic performance, socioeconomic background, and school characteristics. We discuss the implications of these findings for educational policy.

High self-selection of Ukrainian refugees into Europe: Evidence from Kraków and Vienna.

Almost eight million Ukrainians have fled their country to escape the Russian full-scale invasion. To provide empirical evidence on how beneficiaries of temporary protection who reside in the immediate proximity of Ukraine differ from those who went further and reside in Western European countries, two large-scale rapid-response surveys were conducted in Kraków, Poland, and Vienna, Austria, in spring 2022. Data include information on socio-demographic characteristics, human capital, and return intentions of 472 and 1,094 adult Ukrainian refugees in Poland and Austria, respectively. Contributing to the growing empirical evidence on consistent assortative patterns in refugee inflows into Europe, our findings show that regularities in patterns of self-selection also occur in forced migration contexts where legal routes to safety apply. According to the analysed convenience sample, a tentative conclusion is that the further Ukrainian refugees moved to the West, the more self-selected they tend to be in the key dimensions of formal educational attainment, previous employment, language skills, and urbanity. Results indicate that willingness to stay in Kraków is significantly lower than willingness to remain in Vienna. This suggests that public financial support and living conditions, rather than diaspora networks, are decisive factors in shaping the decision to stay, move to another location or return to Ukraine. The aim to start a new life elsewhere may drive the motivation to choose a more distant destination instead of a neighboring country that allows to return rather quickly. Host countries should be aware of these specific characteristics of their refugee populations and adapt their integration policies accordingly.

Okolo on the Question of African Philosophy and its Periodization

This paper is an attempt to respond to Okolo’s position that African philosophy arrives at the African-European contact. For Okolo, there is what could be referred to as expressions of philosophic tendencies, not-really-philosophy, called ‘philosophy in Africa’ which has existed in Africa, but real-philosophy begins post-Second World War after the attainment of formal education and critical reflection from the pure act of reasoning, hence ‘African philosophy’. Thus, questions arise: ‘Why, in the first place, questioning philosophy, instead of religion, arts, politics, etc? Why must African philosophy, the expression of African wisdom, be a product of African-European contact? A clear problem in Okolo’s position is the affirmation that everything African, especially the essence of being African which Okolo designates with the term ‘being-with’ is either non-African-originated, not really a philosophy or European-originated. This paper defends the thesis that ‘being’ implicates the ‘facticity of existence’ which is the central focus in philosophizing, and once there ‘is’ in Africa before the African-European contact, there ‘is’ ‘philosophy’ in its real sense. This paper is expected to expose Okolo’s weaknesses and make a proposition that philosophy cannot be dated or periodized, and finally that what is African can commendably sustain Africa. The paper shall adopt philosophical conceptual and contextual analysis and clarifications to evaluate Okolo.

Migrant worker inclusion and psychological well-being: Insights from the hospitality and tourism workplace

While the hospitality and tourism industry relies on migrant workers as a source of labour, their inclusion and well-being are less examined. Set in a hospitality and tourism-dependent economy that heavily depends on migrant workers, this study employed logit models to determine the factors that coalesce to create inclusion in the industry. The findings revealed that formal educational attainment, duration of stay, duration of work with tourism organisation, contribution to creative solutions at the workplace, and assistance to co-workers significantly contributed to workplace inclusion. Two inclusion dimensions of belongingness, and uniqueness, significantly determined the psychological well-being of the migrant workers.

Predictors of Mpox vaccine uptake among sexual and gender minority young adults living in Illinois: Unvaccinated vs. double vs. single dose vaccine recipients

IntroductionThe 2022 global outbreak of Monkeypox virus (Mpox), which has primarily spread through the sexual networks of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals, has introduced new public health challenges. While an efficacious Mpox vaccine is in active circulation, few Mpox vaccine studies have examined its uptake among SGM groups. The aims of this study were to investigate (a) the prevalence of Mpox vaccine uptake among SGM and (b) the contextual, Mpox-disease specific, and Mpox-vaccine specific factors associated with Mpox vaccine among SGM. MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey in Illinois, USA in September 2022; 320 young SGM completed self-administered questionnaires. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the contextual, Mpox-disease specific, and Mpox-vaccine specific factors associated with Mpox vaccine uptake. Adjusted Odds Ratios (aORs) and 95 % Confidence Intervals (CI) are reported. ResultsApproximately 50 % of the SGM participants included in this study had received at least their first dose of the Mpox vaccine. Multinomial regression analysis showed that individuals who had recently experienced food insecurity, had higher degrees of fear of social rejection due to Mpox acquisition, and were more Mpox-vaccine hesitant were more likely to be unvaccinated. Conversely, knowing people who have contracted Mpox, having higher formal educational attainment, having higher degrees of Mpox-related internalized heterosexism, and being more concerned about one’s safety regarding Mpox morbidity were more likely to be double-dosers. ConclusionApproximately 50 % of the SGMs included in this study received at least their first dose of the Mpox vaccine; however, only one-quarter of participants completed the recommended 2-dose Mpox regimen. Our findings indicate that socioeconomic stability, fear of social rejection due to disease acquisition, and Mpox-specific vaccine hesitancy may be important structural targets to consider when developing vaccine-uptake prevention and intervention strategies tailored to the needs of sexual and gender minorities.

Assessing the inequalities in demand for family planning satisfied in Ghana: evidence from the 1993-2014 Demographic and Health Surveys.

Family planning is essential in promoting the well-being of women and their families and communities and ensuring quality of care in contraceptive use. This study sought to assess the trend and inequalities in the demand for family planning satisfied (DFPS) in Ghana from 1993 to 2014. The World Health Organization's Health Equity Assessment Toolkit was employed to analyse the data. We disaggregated DFPS by five equity stratifiers: age, economic status, education, residence and region. Inequality was measured using difference (D), population attributable risk (PAR), ratio (R) and population attributable fraction (PAF). The study showed an increment in DFPS from 17.8% to 38.7% between 1993 and 2014. With respect to age, we noted substantial inequality in 2003 (D=21.9 [95% confidence interval {CI} 15.2 to 28.7]), 1993 (D=4.8 [95% CI -1.8 to 11.4]) and 2014 (D=15 [95% CI 3 to 26.9]). The greatest economic inequality occurred in 1993 (PAF=69.7 [95% CI 50.8 to 88.6]; D=20.1 [95% CI 14.8 to 25.4]). Regarding education, significant inequality existed in 1993 (PAF=112 [95% CI 100.8 to 123.2]; D=29.7 [95% CI 21.9 to 37.4]). Ashanti and the Upper West regions reported significant inequalities (PAF=55.6 [95% CI 33.1 to 78.2]; D=16.1 [95% CI 8.9 to 23.3]). There are age-, education-, wealth-, residence- and region-related inequalities with respect to DFPS. Policymakers will have to prioritize the needs of women with no formal or low educational attainment in order to improve DFPS coverage. Special attention needs to be given to adolescent girls since they suffer greater inequalities than adult women.

Beyond human capital: how does parents’ direct influence on their sons’ earnings vary across eight OECD countries?

Abstract This article asks to what degree the association between parents’ education and sons’ earnings is mediated by various forms of sons’ human capital across eight large OECD countries. We exploit the OECD Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) database, which provides information on four dimensions of human capital (educational attainment, field of study, cognitive skills, and proxies of non-cognitive skills). We find that the intergenerational transmission process is wholly mediated just by sons’ formal educational attainment in Germany, Norway, and the USA. By contrast, in France, Italy, Spain, Poland, and the UK, a significant residual association remains after we control for all dimensions of sons’ human capital. While we cannot exclude that this residual association is due to unobservable background-related skills sons might have, this also points to family origin factors unrelated to human capital accumulation—such as social ties—that might play a role in the intergenerational transmission of labour market advantages in these countries.

Public assessment of the Trump administration’s handling of the Covid pandemic: a case study in lifelong learning

ABSTRACT The Covid-19 pandemic is the most serious public health crisis in the lifetime of most living adults, but it may be a precursor of crises to come in the decades ahead. Apart from the health challenges associated with the pandemic, the public reaction to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic offers important insights into the role of lifelong learning about rapidly emerging issues and public policy decisions. Using data from a two-wave national probability sample of U.S. adults in 2020, we examine the influence of formal schooling, informal and occupational lifelong learning, religious beliefs and attitudes, current understanding of the coronavirus, and trust in information sources on the formation of an attitudinal assessment of the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic by the Trump Administration. We find that formal educational attainment, college science courses, biological literacy, and current coronavirus understanding are significant predictors of adult assessment of the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic by the Trump Administration. We explore the implications of these findings for lifelong education in the 21st century.

Problematic Child Media Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Assess how family stressors (including structural stressors, social determinants of health inequities, and parent psychological distress) relate to media rule implementation and problematic child media use during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Nationally representative survey of 1000 United States parents with at least one 6 to 17 year old child was conducted in October through November 2020. Problematic use was greater in families where parents were employed full time, present in the home (eg, working from home), had low levels or formal educational attainment, and were experiencing more psychological distress. Although there was a small decline in the number of media-related rules implemented during the pandemic (fewer parents enforced screen limits on weekdays or weekends or limited screen use at mealtimes), there was no association between rule implementation and problematic media use. Family stressors were associated with problematic child media use during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. As we emerge from the pandemic, it will be important to help parents adjust their family's media practices cognizant of the fact that additional children may have developed problematic screen use behaviors. Such efforts should center the role of structural and social determinants of health inequities on the stressors that families experience and that impact media use.

Does educational attainment promote job satisfaction? The bittersweet trade-offs between job resources, demands, and stress.

Education is considered one of the most critical human capital investments. But does formal educational attainment "pay off" in terms of job satisfaction? To answer this question, in Study 1 we use a meta-analytic technique to examine the correlation between educational attainment and job satisfaction (k = 74, N = 134,924) and find an effect size close to zero. We then build on the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and research that distinguishes between working conditions and perceived stress to theorize that educational attainment involves notable trade-offs. In Study 2 we develop and test a multipath, two-stage mediation model using a nationally representative sample to explore this idea. We find that, while better-educated individuals enjoy greater job resources (income, job autonomy, and job variety), they also tend to incur greater job demands (work hours, task pressure, job intensity, and time urgency). On average, these demands are associated with increased job stress and decreased job satisfaction, largely offsetting the positive gains associated with greater resources. Given that the net relationship between education and job satisfaction emerges as weakly negative, we highlight that important trade-offs underlie the education-job satisfaction link. In supplemental analyses, we identify boundary conditions based on gender and self-employment status (such that being female exacerbates, and being self-employed attenuates, the negative association between education and job satisfaction). Finally, we discuss the practical implications for individuals and organizations, as well as alternative explanations for the education-job satisfaction link. Trends in antenatal care visits and associated factors in Ghana from 2006 to 2018

IntroductionGiven that maternal mortality is a major global health concern, multiple measures including antenatal care visits have been promoted by the global community. However, most pregnant women in Ghana and other sub-Saharan African countries do not attain the recommended timelines, in addition to a slower progress towards meeting the required minimum of eight visits stipulated by the World Health Organization. Therefore, this study explored the trends in antenatal care visits and the associated factors in Ghana from 2006 to 2018 using the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys.MethodsThe study used women datasets (N = 7795) aged 15 to 49 years from three waves (2006, 2011, and 2017-2018) of the Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (GMICS). STATA version 14 was used for data analyses. Univariable analyses, bivariable analyses with chi-square test of independence, and multivariable analyses with robust multinomial logistic regression models were fitted.ResultsThe study found a consistent increase in the proportion of women having adequate and optimal antenatal attendance from 2006 to 2018 across the women’s sociodemographic segments. For instance, the proportion of mothers achieving adequate antenatal care (4 to 7 antenatal care visits) increased from 49.3% in 2006 to 49.98% in 2011 to 58.61% in 2017-2018. In the multivariable model, women with upward attainment of formal education, health insurance coverage, increasing household wealth, and residing in the Upper East Region were consistently associated with a higher likelihood of adequate and/or optimal antenatal care attendance from 2006 to 2018.ConclusionWomen who are less likely to achieve optimal antenatal care visits should be targeted by policies towards reducing maternal mortalities and other birth complications. Poverty-reduction policies, promoting maternal and girl-child education, improving general livelihood in rural settings, expanding health insurance coverage and infrastructural access, harnessing community-level structures, and innovative measures such as telehealth and telemedicine are required to increase antenatal care utilization.

Sierra Leone: A Historical Cultural Capital of Pan-Africanism

This paper examines the concept of Sierra Leone serving historically as a cultural capital of Pan-Africanism. Culture is examined from the perspectives of race, language, formal educational attainment, and religion, especially Christianity. Racially and ethnically, the people of Sierra Leone today are the descendants of not just native Sierra Leoneans, but also natives of dozens of other Sub-Saharan African nations, and people of Black African descent from North America, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom. As a result, the Sierra Leone Krio/Creole language is a Pan-African Krio/Creole. Historically, Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone has served as one of the most important academic/intellectual institutions in the Black world that have contributed to the brain thrust to Pan-Africanism. Finally, Sierra Leonean Christianity can be explained as a Pan-African Christianity.

Dietary diversity and associated factors among children (6\u201323 months) in Gedeo zone, Ethiopia: cross - sectional study

IntroductionDifferent foods and food groups are good sources for various macro- and micronutrients. Diversified diet play an important role in both physical and mental growth and development of children. However, meeting minimum standards of dietary diversity for children is a challenge in many developing countries including Ethiopia.ObjectiveTo assess dietary diversity and associated factors among children (6–23 months) in Gedieo Zone, Ethiopia.MethodCommunity based cross-sectional study was carried out at Gedieo Zone, Ethiopia, from January to March 15, 2019. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to get a total of 665 children with the age of between 6 and 23 months from their kebeles. Data was collected by using face-to-face interview with structured questionnaire. Data was entered into Epidata version 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 for analyses. Variables having p < 0.25 at bivariate analysis were fitted to multivariable analysis. Multivariable logistic regression model was used at 95% confidence interval and with P-Value < 0.05. Bivariate.ResultA total of 665 children were participated with response rate of 96.2%. Only 199(29.9%) of children were met the minimum requirements for dietary diversity. Age of children [AOR 4.237(1.743–10.295))], Educational status [AOR 2.864(1.156–7.094)], Number of families [AOR 2.865(1.776–4.619))] and household wealth index [AOR4.390(2.300–8.380)] were significantly associated with Dietary Diversity of children.ConclusionOnly, one out of four children aged of 6–23 months attained the minimum dietary diversity score. Children from low socioeconomic status and mothers with no formal educational attainment need special attention to improve the practice of appropriate feeding of children.

Maternal Informal Learning Experiences that Shape Parenting Practices.

Current understanding of the linkage between maternal education and parenting practices has largely been informed using a narrow definition of educational attainment-the highest level of education an individual has completed. However, the proximal processes that shape parenting, including informal learning experiences, are also important to understand. Less is known about the informal learning experiences that shape parenting decisions and practices. To this end, we conducted a qualitative inquiry about the informal learning experiences of mothers of children ages 3 to 4 years with the specific goal of understanding how maternal informal learning experiences shape parenting decisions and practices. We conducted interviews with 53 mothers from across the United States who had previously participated in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of an intervention targeting infant care practices. We recruited a purposive sample of mothers chosen to maximize diversity across educational attainment and adherence to infant care practices targeted in the RCT. Using a grounded theory approach, data were analyzed using an iterative process for organizing codes and themes that mothers identified as informal learning experiences. We identified seven themes representing distinct types of maternal informal learning experiences that impact parenting practices, including: (1) experiential learning during childhood; (2) experiential learning during adulthood; (3) interpersonal interactions including via social media; (4) experiences with non-interactive media sources; (5) informal trainings; (6) beliefs; and (7) current circumstances. Multiple informal learning experiences inform the parenting decisions and practices of mothers with varying levels of formal educational attainment.

Hypertension care cascade in the Ingwavuma rural community, uMkhanyakude District, KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa

BackgroundTreatment and control of hypertension are associated with a substantial reduction in adverse cardiovascular disease outcomes. Although South Africa aims to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases, there is limited evidence on the hypertension care cascade (HCC) performance in rural areas where stroke and hypertension are high. This study estimated HCC performance and identified predictors of hypertension screening among adults in the Ingwavuma community of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the WHO STEPwise approach to surveillance (STEPS) questionnaire from 400 adult participants, excluding pregnant women and those with physical or cognitive impairments. Three hundred and ninety-three participants had complete data, and 131 had high blood pressure. We calculated progression rates for screening, diagnosis, treatment and control of hypertension from the sub-sample of participants with high blood pressure and assessed the bivariate association between HCC stages and participant characteristics and their effect sizes. We used binary and multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of hypertension screening.ResultsEighty-eight per cent of participants reported prior screening for hypertension. However, only 53.5% of patients under pharmacological treatment for hypertension had controlled blood pressure. In bivariate regression, employed participants were 80.3% (COR = 0.197, 95% CI [0.042–0.921]) more likely to be screened. In multivariable regression, the likelihood of hypertension screening was 82.4% (AOR = 0.176, 95% CI [0.047–0.655]) lower among participants in a cohabiting union than single participants. Similarly, employed participants were 87.4% (AOR = 0.129, 95% CI [0.017–0.952]) less likely to be screened than their unemployed counterparts.ConclusionsThe considerable attrition from the HCC across socio-demographic categories indicates a need for community-wide interventions. Empowering health care workers for community-based health promotion and hypertension management through point-of-care diagnostic tools could improve HCC performance. Efforts to improve the HCC should also focus on social determinants of health, notably gender and formal educational attainment.

Racial Disparities in Stillbirth Risk Factors among non-Hispanic Black Women and non-Hispanic White Women in the United States.

Historically, stillbirth risk factors are more prevalent among non-Hispanic Black women than non-Hispanic White women, including age < 20, lower formal educational attainment, prepregnancy obesity, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, short interpregnancy interval, small for gestational age newborn, late prenatal care, and previous cesarean birth. We examined whether these disparities have changed since 2011 and identified a group of risk factors that differed between Black women and White women when accounting for correlations among variables. In a random sample of 315 stillbirths from the National Center for Health Statistics' 2016 fetal death data, Black women and White women were compared for each risk factor using t-tests or chi-square tests. Variables with p ≤ .20 were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance. In this sample, Black women experiencing stillbirth were less likely to have a Bachelor's degree (12.94% vs. 28.49%, p = .04), and more likely to be obese (44.5% vs. 29.1%, p = .01) than White women. Multivariate analysis accounting for correlations among variables showed a group of risk factors that differed between Black women and White women: age < 20, lower education, prepregnancy obesity, hypertension (chronic and pregnancy-associated), nulliparity before stillbirth, and earlier gestation. Less formal education, obesity, age <20, hypertension, chronic and pregnancy-associated, nulliparity, and earlier gestation are important to consider in multilevel stillbirth prevention interventions to decrease racial disparity in stillbirth. Respectfully listening to women and taking their concerns seriously is one way nurses and other health care providers can promote equity in health outcomes for childbearing women.

Environmentally Friendly Rice Farmer Empowerment for Sustainable Food Security in Banten Province

Empowerment is a key factor in accentuating the role of farmer communities as the main actors in managing the cultivation of Indonesian staple food, that is, rice. This study was intended to analyze the factors influencing the empowerment of farmers to manage environmentally friendly lowland rice production for sustainable agricultural development in Banten Province. With a descriptive design, this research collected data through a questionnaire survey involving 180 respondents, sampled from a predefined population of rice farmers. It was carried out in three regencies in the province, namely Serang, Pandeglang, and Lebak, for three months from April to June 2019. The data were analyzed using statistical inference, SEM, in LISREL 8.73 (Linear Structural Relationships). The results showed that the empowerment of lowland rice farmers to adopt eco-friendly innovation was determined by individual characteristics (i.e., non-formal and formal educational attainment and cosmopolitanism) and the existence of encouragement to implement the innovation (i.e., support from farmer community, market support, and technological information support). In conclusion, to increase the empowerment of rice farmers in the scheme of sustainable food security, farmers, government, and other relevant parties need to pay attention to the characteristics of innovation users and promote the adoption of eco-friendly practices in lowland rice cultivation.

Existence theory: Outline for a theory of social behaviour

This article introduces ‘existence theory’ as a new approach to sociological theory and research. Existence theory starts from the assumption that people organise their lives around a limited set of existential milestones. Cultural expectations are such that without the accomplishment of those milestones, individuals may experience their lives as incomplete. Examples of milestones can include the attainment of formal education, a lasting partnership and the creation of a family, but in general the milestones which are important to individuals and their precise articulation will depend on a variety of cultural and structural factors. The achievement of existential milestones often depends on that of other existential milestones, thereby producing what we call an ‘existential ladder’. The article also elaborates on the significance of ‘existential urgency’ in that, due to a variety of factors (some biological, some cultural and structural), there are time limits on when certain existential milestones ought to be achieved by. In contemporary society, we note that individuals seem to have more choice about which milestones are important to them and when they can be achieved, although we emphasise that this flexibility is unevenly distributed. This then provides a steppingstone towards an elaboration of the power dynamics and inequalities underlying both the experience and the achievement of existential milestones. Finally, this paper shows how existence theory helps to reflect on a variety of social phenomena of contemporary significance: populism in politics, forced migration, and the coronavirus pandemic.

Maternal human capital accumulation and children's well-being.

Research examining the intergenerational transmission of human capital is subject to two limitations. First, for the parental generation, most studies focus on formal education but fail to consider vocational training experience, which has more variation than formal educational attainment over the life course. Second, most studies have found consistent conclusions using income and occupation for the children's outcomes but have generated mixed findings regarding health and cognitive ability. This study aims to answer whether mothers' additional vocational training beyond formal education is beneficial to children's health and cognitive ability. Applying fixed-effects regression to the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth Child and Young Adults datasets, this study finds that mothers' human capital accumulation is positively associated with higher cognitive scores for both boys and girls, but does not significantly predict children's illnesses or behavior problems. These findings bear implications for policy aimed at mitigating the intergenerational cycles of disadvantages.

The relationship between accurate knowledge on HIV/AIDS transmission and adolescent pregnancy in Ghana: A further analyses of the 2017 multiple cluster indicator survey

BackgroundThe literature posits that HIV knowledge is associated with precautious sexual behaviour and practice. We hypothesised and investigated the association between knowledge of HIV transmission and adolescent pregnancy in Ghana, given that the relationship between HIV knowledge and adolescent pregnancy has not been extensively studied. MethodsWe did analyses on 5836 cases (weighted as 5121) of 15–24 years old reproductive age women in the female dataset of the 2017 Multiple Cluster Indicator Survey. Adolescent pregnancy was operationalized as reproductive age women between 15-24 years who became pregnant before the age of 18 years. Accurate HIV knowledge was measured by computing the scores of correct responses on six questions exploring women's knowledge about HIV transmission. We accounted for sample design and weight before performing a Chi-square test of independence and Poisson regression. ResultsThe results indicate that having lower scores on the HIV transmission knowledge scale was correlated with a higher probability of girls becoming pregnant before their 18th birthday. After controlling for the moderating effect of socio-demographic characteristics of the participants, we found that accurate HIV transmission knowledge loses its statistical significance in determining adolescent pregnancy. The factors that remain significant in the adjusted model were formal education status, household wealth, and region of residence. HIV transmission knowledge was statistically significantly related to adolescent pregnancy in the model after the education level variable was omitted. This observation was due to the significant effect of school education on other variables in the model. This result demonstrates that HIV knowledge has a major impact on adolescent pregnancy, but this effect is predicated by formal education attainment of the adolescent girl. ConclusionsGiven the results, adolescent pregnancy issues can be resolved by the government and other development partners by adequately educating adolescents about HIV transmissions. Also, because they have the potential to reduce pregnancy among adolescents in Ghana, we recommend that programs and initiatives should address existing disparities in formal educational attainment and household wealth.
