Educating Professionals to Develop Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as Infrastructure for Water Pollution Control: A Course Proposal

The objective of this study was to design a university-level course focused on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for water pollution control. The work unfolded in three phases: the initial planning, course delivery, and assessment of learning outcomes. In the planning phase, a set of competencies was outlined using the Developing a Curriculum Method (DACUM), resulting in defined learning outcomes and a structured course outline. Subsequently, the course was conducted over a two-week period, employing a hybrid format including both online and in-person sessions. The assessments of the learning outcomes included one test, an assignment, a satisfaction survey, and the post-course feedback. As a result of the planning phase, four competencies, seven learning outcomes and four course units were defined. The participant cohort encompassed a diverse group of 50 individuals, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, professionals working in industry and institutions, and professors. The assessment of the learning outcomes showed good results. However, issues regarding the mathematical calculations and field-trip experience were noted, suggesting areas for course enhancement. The participants expressed high satisfaction levels across the various course components. Notably, 70% of the participants indicated the application of the acquired knowledge in their professional endeavors. These findings underscore the successful implementation of the course, establishing it as a pioneering university-level program in NBS for water pollution control.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Adults Living With Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Distress: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

The bidirectional relationship between disease activity and mental health in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has prompted investigations into the efficacy of psychotherapeutic interventions such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on biopsychosocial outcomes. We aimed to examine the efficacy of an ACT program (intervention) in comparison with a cognitive behavioral therapy-informed psychoeducation program (active control) for individuals with IBD and coexistent psychological distress. Both programs were delivered online through a hybrid format (i.e., therapist-led and participant-led sessions). A total of 120 adults with IBD were randomized to either the intervention (N = 61) or active control groups (N = 59). Efficacy was determined using linear mixed models for group differences, in rate of changes in study outcomes, between baseline, postintervention, and 3-month follow-up. The primary outcome health-related quality of life significantly improved in the intervention group when compared with the active control group, with a significantly different rate of change observed from baseline to postintervention ( t [190] = 2.15, P = 0.033) in favor of the intervention group with a medium effect size (β = 0.41, mean difference = 0.07, 95% confidence interval 0.01-0.12, P = 0.014). Similarly, the secondary outcome Crohn's disease activity significantly reduced in the intervention group when compared with the active control group, with a significantly different rate of change observed from baseline to 3-month follow-up ( t [90] = -2.40, P = 0.018) in favor of the intervention group with a large effect size (β = -0.77, mean difference = -9.43, 95% confidence interval -13.72 to -5.13, P < 0.001) ( P = 0.014). Furthermore, when observing the rate of change in outcomes over time for the groups separately, anxiety symptoms and pain significantly improved in the intervention group only, and conversely, ulcerative colitis activity and stress symptoms significantly improved in the active control group only. All other outcomes (N = 14) significantly improved over time in both groups including IBD activity, gastrointestinal unhelpful thinking patterns, visceral anxiety, fatigue interference, fatigue severity, fatigue frequency, psychological inflexibility, self-efficacy, resilience, current health status, depression symptoms, IBD control, and pain catastrophizing; however, these changes were not significantly different between the groups. Both programs were of benefit to people with IBD and distress. However, ACT offers a significant added benefit for health-related quality of life and self-reported Crohn's disease activity and may be a useful adjuvant therapy in integrated IBD care.

In-situ halloysite functionalization of anionic hybrid gels possessing easily implemented site-specific (alkyl)amide and carboxyl groups

Design of functional materials with tunable properties based on anionically-modified copolymer network of poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) P(NIPA-co-MA) containing linear polyacrylamide and various amounts of Halloysite nanotubes (Hal) was presented using a facile route of solution casting. The organic/inorganic nanostructures based on thermo-responsive PNIPA were constructed to create hybrid materials via in situ polymerization with different Hal-loading and then used for the removal of cationic methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions. To achieve the desired mechanical property, the optimum composition of hybrids was determined following a simple and cost-effective synthesis procedure. In situ one-pot polymerization was promoted by semi-IPN formation, following a much simpler route than traditional preparation approaches for stable cross-linked hybrid formation. The swelling of hybrids decreased by 2.9-fold with loading of 5.40 % Hal, confirming the hydrogen bonding interactions between Hal and PAAm/P(NIPA-co-MA) network. The mechanical properties of Hal-doped hybrid gels showed an increase–decrease tendency with increase of Hal-content from 0.80 to 5.40 % (w/v) due to the high aspect ratio of Hal and strong secondary interactions between Hal and PAAm/P(NIPA-co-MA) chains. The effective cross-link density for Hal-doped hybrids was expressed by a cubic polynomial as a function of Hal concentration. Temperature-sensitive swelling results showed that the advantage of sustained release property of Hal can be combined with excellent controllability of PNIPA-based network. Adsorption results of MB onto Hal-doped hybrids bearing methacrylic acid moieties demonstrated their potential as efficient adsorbents for the removal of cationic dyes. A new route offered by the proposed procedure for design of hybrids containing “green” one-dimensional nanofillers creates an innovative perspective on robust hybrid structures for practical applications.

‘Find your groove’: exploring how dancing can support physical literacy for individuals with Parkinson’s

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine teaching strategies utilized by instructors within a dance class for individuals with Parkinson’s, and to describe ways in which dancers respond to the teaching strategies utilized; both through the lens of physical literacy. Dance instructors offer important insight into the content design and facilitation of these classes for individuals with Parkinson’s so they can experience the physical, psychological, and social benefits of dancing. Observations of nine dance classes (occurring online and via hybrid format) were conducted. Data was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and five themes were created: (1) Tuning in and connecting dancers with their bodies; (2) Creating a fun, low-pressure, and responsive environment; (3) Designing opportunities for dancers to be creative during class; (4) Overcoming challenges and feeling successful; (5) Connecting and dancing together. Dance classes led by adaptable, encouraging, and responsive instructors offer joyful and motivating dancing experiences for individuals with Parkinson’s. These findings paint a picture of specific pedagogical strategies and behaviours utilized by dance instructors to support expressions of physical literacy within classes for individuals with Parkinson’s.

Glycopolymeric Micellar Nanoparticles for Platelet-Mediated Tumor-Targeted Delivery of Docetaxel for Cancer Therapy.

The high level of accumulation of therapeutic agents in tumors is crucial for cancer treatment. Compared to the passive tumor-targeting effect, active tumor-targeting delivery systems, primarily mediated by peptides with high production costs and reduced circulation time, are highly desired. Platelet-driven technologies have opened new avenues for targeted drug delivery prevalently through a membrane coating strategy that involves intricate manufacturing procedures or the fucoidan-mediated hitchhiking method with limited platelet affinity. Here, a novel type of amphiphilic glycopolymer self-assembled micellar nanoparticle has been developed to adhere to naturally activated platelets in the blood. The simultaneous integration of fucose and sialic acid segments into glycopolymers enables closer mimicry of the structure of P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1), thereby increasing the affinity for activated platelets. It results in the formation of glycopolymeric micelle-platelet hybrids, facilitating targeted drug delivery to tumors. The selective platelet-assisted cellular uptake of docetaxel (DTX)-loaded glycopolymeric micelles leads to lower IC50 values against 4T1 cells than that of free DTX. The directed tumor-targeting effect of activated platelets has significantly improved the tumor accumulation capacity of the glycopolymeric nanoparticles, with up to 21.0% found in tumors within the initial 0.2 h. Additionally, with acid-responsive drug release and inherent antimetastasis properties, the glycopolymeric nanoparticles ensured potent therapeutic efficacy, prolonged survival time, and reduced cardiotoxicity, presenting a new and unexplored strategy for platelet-directed drug delivery to tumors, showing promising prospects in treating localized tumors and preventing tumor metastasis.

Improving dementia and palliative care through the co-design of an integrated model of care.

A need exists to improve end-of-life care for people with advanced dementia, by integrating available services. Stakeholders on the Central Coast of New South Wales united to co-design an improved model of care that would integrate care across care settings. The aim of this project was to co-design a model of integrated, person-centred palliative care for people with dementia at the end of life. This case study describes seven co-design workshops which took place in 2023 to develop a program logic model. Workshops were run in a hybrid format, with stakeholders attending in person and online. Workshops were attended by an average of 26 stakeholders including people and carers with lived experience of dementia, healthcare workers from hospital and community-based services (public and private), primary care clinicians, and participants from the not-for-profit sector and academia. Stakeholders developed a shared mission and purpose and identified priority areas for improving palliative care for people with advanced dementia. This led to the development of a program logic model, which included components relating to education for people with dementia, carers, and professionals, care coordination and referrals, and regular multidisciplinary case conferences. Feedback on the model from a new audience identified areas for improvement. The stakeholder group participated in a survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the co-design. The survey found that stakeholders were satisfied with the model of care the group developed. This project highlighted the value of adopting a co-design approach with stakeholders to develop a new model of care.

Is it a matter of design?

Rural and urban areas in China have traditionally represented contrasting realms, largely due to the country&amp;rsquo;s dual social structure. However, efforts to reduce inequalities and encourage harmonious planning are reshaping both urban and rural landscapes, leading to new hybridized forms of living. These transformations emphasize the importance of design disciplines in experimenting with innovative settlement models and architectural projects. Recognizing the interconnectedness and mutual dependence of urban and rural areas is a fertile perspective to frame the countryside as a significant frontier in China&amp;rsquo;s cutting-edge architectural movements. China&amp;rsquo;s rural revitalization strategy represents the latest initiative aimed at improving conditions in the Chinese countryside and enhancing the well-being of its residents. Aligned with the principles of ecological civilization, this policy calls for the development of new esthetic dimensions that reflect technological advancements, cultural diversity, socioeconomic values, and political narratives, echoing similar sustainable agendas worldwide. The contributions selected for this special issue showcase how various design attitudes have embodied the countryside development mandate in far-sighted proposals of transformation that addresses several crucial challenges of contemporary living, such as wealth distribution, economic stimulation, cultural heritage preservation, and the relationship with nature. These examples suggest that by challenging the ideological commitments supporting their feasibility, design practice, and research can be fundamental tools for reorienting policy formulation beyond solving specific issues through targeted design approaches.

Organized Criminal Groups in the Modern World: Theoretical Foundations, Structure and Functional Aspects

This article is a comprehensive study of organized criminal groups (OCGs) in the modern world, covering the theoretical foundations of their study, structural characteristics and functional aspects of their activities. The paper traces the evolution of the concept of organized crime in criminological science, analyzes modern approaches to the definition and classification of OCGs, and considers the legal aspects of their definition at the international and national levels. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the structural characteristics of modern organized crime groups, including traditional hierarchical models, network structures, hybrid forms of organization, as well as new forms such as cluster and project organization. The study shows a trend away from rigid hierarchical structures towards more flexible and adaptive forms of organization, which allows OCGs to effectively resist law enforcement pressure and adapt to changing conditions. The article also examines key functional aspects of organized crime groups, including their role in the shadow economy, establishment of corruption links, transnational activities, use of modern technologies and adaptation to countermeasures. The impact of globalization and technological progress on the evolution of OCG forms and methods of operation is highlighted. The study demonstrates the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the study of organized crime, taking into account the complexity and dynamism of this phenomenon. The work contributes to the understanding of current trends in the development of organized crime and can serve as a basis for the development of effective strategies to counter organized crime.

Collective behaviors of neural network regulated by the spatially distributed stimuli

Most external stimuli, including sound, temperature, and illumination, exhibit spatially heterogeneous, and different amplitudes of the same signal are received by neurons at different positions in the neural network. To address this issue, we constructed a grid-like neural network using memristive FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons. The neuronal responses depend on the spatially distributed stimuli, with the stimulus amplitudes being determined by the distance from the central area. Consequently, complete synchronization occurs in the network comprising periodic neurons, chaotic neurons, and their hybrid forms. Periodic patterns maintain the highest Hamilton energy whereas the lowest Hamilton energy appears in chaotic neurons. In a network consisting of chaotic neurons, the synchronization threshold is larger compared to the other types. In particular, the periodic neurons with the highest energy oscillations can regulate the low-energy chaotic neurons into periodic patterns. Similar conclusions are drawn in a chain-like network. The results advance the understanding of the synchronization mechanisms in the presence of spatial heterogeneity.

Telepsychiatry Current Practice and Implications for Future Trends: A 2023 American Psychiatric Association Member Survey.

Introduction: Although telehealth was a viable means of delivering psychiatric care even before the COVID-19 public health emergency, flexibilities at the federal and state levels during the pandemic prompted mass adoption in a short timeframe. Little is known about how psychiatrists plan to offer care going forward and to what degree services will be offered virtually, in-person, or in a hybrid format. Methods: We conducted a survey of American Psychiatric Association (APA) members regarding telepsychiatry practice and potential barriers. Results: The survey was completed by 1,660 APA members. Most survey respondents (94%) conduct at least some telepsychiatry. Most respondents indicate operating in a hybrid environment in which they maintain a physical practice location, while 16% indicate that they do not have a physical practice and only see patients remotely. Across all setting types, 82% of respondents deliver telehealth via all or mostly video; 11% report conducting telehealth visits via mostly audio-only modalities; and 7% report equal usage of both modalities. Barriers to telepsychiatry noted by respondents include limited reimbursement, state medical licensure, federal and state regulations regarding controlled substance prescribing via telehealth, and technical challenges. Conclusion: Results of this survey of APA members show that the majority conduct at least some telepsychiatry; operate in a hybrid environment; and deliver telehealth via all or mostly video. Reported barriers to telepsychiatry practice include legal, regulatory, reimbursement, and technical issues. The future of telepsychiatry may largely be determined by which legal, regulatory, and reimbursement flexibilities are ended, extended temporarily, or made permanent.

Spirit of the Age

This essay turns a spotlight on Elizabeth Barret Barrett's unpublished 1822-26 notebook (now in Wellesley College Library). A seldom-cited archival text, the 231-page notebook opens a window on Romantic culture and writers in the years it spans. It also illumines the intellectual and artistic formation of the gifted juvenile author who would become England’s most internationally influential woman poet by 1850 under the name of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The notebook includes drafts of original compositions, memoranda (for example, “Stray Thoughts,” “List of Books I wish to have”), and extracts or analyses documenting EBB’s self-education through wide-ranging reading across genres, fields, and national boundaries. The largest category of entries is made up of review-like commentaries, principally on recently published books, in which EBB hones a critical voice shaped by the periodical press of the period. Writers treated range from major literary figures like Lord Byron, Letitia Landon, Madame de Staël, and Mary Shelley, to others influential or emerging at the time (e.g., Robert Southey, James Hogg, Anna Jameson, James Fenimore Cooper), to authors of memoirs, biographies, histories, and works of political philosophy. Examination of the hybrid form as well as the mixed contents of the notebook indicates that it both participates in the commonplace book tradition and reflects Romantic transformations in that tradition exemplified by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s notebooks. In the process, EBB’s 1822-26 notebook offers a perspective on the mid-1820s very different from William Hazlitt’s in The Spirit of the Age (1824-25); it also demonstrates the budding acumen as a literary critic later expressed in her contributions to Richard Hengist Horne’s A New Spirit of the Age (1844). Notably too, the notebook underscores the cosmopolitanism and engagement with contemporary subject matter that underpins her later artistic practice, especially in her representation of “this live, throbbing” modern age in Aurora Leigh (1856).

Efficient utilization of coral waste for internal curing material to prepare eco-friendly marine geopolymer concrete

To address shortages in construction materials for island engineering, tackle the accumulation of solid waste, and inhibit the shrinkage of geopolymers, coral waste was utilized as the internal curing material to prepare high-performance marine geopolymer concrete (MGC) with seawater, sea-sand, and normal limestone aggregate (LsA). The coral coarse aggregate (CorA) used in this investigation has a total porosity ranging from 50% to 58.3% with internal pore diameters spanning 50–400 μm. The water desorption of CorA followed a two-stage pattern within a relative humidity (RH) range of 75%–85%, becoming nonlinear above 90% RH, which released about 85% of its moisture within 200 h at 97% RH, demonstrating potential for internal curing. Adding a small amount of CorA to MGC increased slump and setting time by providing internal curing water. However, as CorA content exceeded 30%, the slump significantly decreased due to reduced mixing water and elevated activator concentration, while the initial setting time slightly decreased. Furthermore, the inclusion of saturated CorA in MGC significantly reduced autogenous shrinkage, with higher CorA contents (exceeding 30%) leading to slight expansion in the early stages and nearly eliminating shrinkage at contents above 40%. The greater drying shrinkage in geopolymer systems compared to ordinary Portland cement is due to capillary pressure compressing the product framework, converting larger gel pores into smaller ones. Additionally, the layered calcium aluminosilicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) gel exhibits more pronounced creep characteristics under low internal humidity conditions. The higher CorA content in MGC promoted the formation of hybrid C, N-A-S-H gel and hydrotalcite-like phases, and reduced carbonation issues. The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between CorA and the geopolymer matrix formed a robust mechanical interlock, enhancing tensile strength and minimizing shrinkage-induced cracks. Based on overall performance and marine material utilization, an optimal substitution rate of CorA between 40% and 50% is recommended.

Synthesis and characterization of cellulose fibers modified zinc phosphate/hydroxyapatite core-shell as enhanced carrier of cisplatin: Loading, release, and cytotoxicity

The uncontrolled administration of the cisplatin drug (CPTN) resulted in numerous drawbacks. Therefore, effective, affordable, and biocompatible delivery systems were suggested to regulate the loading, release, and therapeutic effect of CPTN. Zinc phosphate/hydroxyapatite hybrid form (ZP/HP) and core-shell nano-rod morphology, as well as its functionalized derivative with cellulose (CF@ZP/HP), were synthesized by the facile dissolution precipitation method followed by mixing with cellulose fibers, respectively. The developed CF@ZP/HP displayed remarkable enhanced CPTN loading properties (418.2 mg/g) as compared to ZP/HP (259.8 mg/g). The CPTN loading behaviors into CF@ZP/HP follow the Langmuir isotherm properties (R2 > 0.98) in addition to the kinetic activities of the pseudo-first-order model (R2 > 0.96). The steric assessment validates the notable increase in the existing loading receptors after the functionalization of ZP/HP with CF from 57.7 mg/g (ZP/HP) to 90.5 mg/g. The functionalization also impacted the capacity of each existing receptor to be able to ensure 5 CPTN molecules. This, in addition to the loading energies (<40 kJ/mol), donates the loading of CPTN by physical multi-molecular processes and in vertical orientation. The CPTN releasing patterns of CF@ZP/HP exhibit slow and controlled properties (95.7 % after 200 h at pH 7.4 and 100 % after 120 h at pH 5.5), but faster than the properties of ZP/HP. The kinetic modeling of the release activities together with the diffusion exponent (>0.45) reflected the release of CPTN according to both erosion and diffusion mechanisms. The loading of CPTN into both ZP/HP and CF@ZP/HP also resulted in a marked enhancement in the anticancer activity of CPTN against human cervical epithelial malignancies (HeLa) (cell viability = 5.6 % (CPTN), 3.2 % (CPTN loaded ZP/HP), and 1.12 % (CPTN loaded CF@ZP/HP)).

In this era of rapid development of global science and technology, artificial intelligence and industrial technology are converging at an unprecedented speed, driving social progress and industrial upgrading. In order to deeply discuss the latest development in these two and relevant fields, share research results, and promote academic exchanges and cooperation, we are honored to have organized the 2024 4th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Industrial Technology Applications (AIITA 2024). This proceedings is the crystallization of this event, which brings together the wisdom and insights of experts, scholars, engineers and technicians from all over the world. AIITA 2024 was grandly held in Guangzhou, China from April 12th to 14th, 2024 via hybrid form, attracting over 200 participants from all over the world. The conference aimed to provide a platform for experts and scholars, engineers and technicians, researchers and developers in the fields of artificial intelligence and industrial engineering to share scientific research results and cutting-edge technologies, understand academic development trends, broaden research ideas, and strengthen academic research and discussion. During the conference, the participants had an in-depth discussion on a number of topics related to the application of artificial intelligence and industrial technology, and jointly explored the new direction of future development. In the keynote speech part, latest research results and cutting-edge technologies in related fields including Graph Neural Networks: Models and Applications in Pattern Recognition (by Prof. Bo Jiang, Anhui University, China), Distributed GPU-accelerated Evolutionary Computation (by Dr. Ran Cheng, Southern University of Science and Technology, China), Quantum Model Learning (by Prof. Daowen Qiu, Sun Yat-sen University, China), Face Image Editing from the Perspective of Conditional Generative (by Prof. Si Wu, South China University of Technology, China), Cooperative Global Robust Output Regulation for Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems with Switching Networks (by Prof. Wei Liu, South China University of Technology, China) were discussed. At the same time, we have set up a number of presentations and panel discussion sessions, in which participants gained more opportunities to have in-depth discussions and exchanges on specific issues. This conference calls for papers on a wide range of topics, covering all aspects of artificial intelligence and industrial technology applications. We received hundreds of submissions from all over the world, and after strict evaluation and screening, we finally included some excellent papers in this proceedings. These papers not only have high academic value and practical significance, but also represent the latest research dynamics and trends in the fields of artificial intelligence and industrial technology applications. Finally, we would like to thank all the experts, scholars, engineers and staff who participated in the AIITA 2024 for their support and contribution. We believe that with the joint efforts of all of us, the research and application in the fields of artificial intelligence and industrial technology applications will achieve more brilliant achievements. It is with this recognition that we gathered once again for the 2024 5th International Conference on Mechanical Instrumentation and Automation (ICMIA 2024), a forum that aims to showcase the latest research achievements, foster collaborations, and pave the way for innovative solutions in this dynamic domain. The ICMIA 2024, held in Wuhan, China, from April 19th to 21st, 2024 via hybrid form, serves as a gathering place for experts, scholars, researchers, and practitioners from around the world. It provides a unique platform to share insights, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities in the field of mechanical instrumentation and automation. This conference serves not only as a showcase for the latest research but also as a catalyst for cross-disciplinary collaborations and knowledge exchange. The keynote speakers at ICMIA 2024 brought with them a wealth of experience and expertise. Their presentations, focusing on cutting-edge research and industry applications, provided valuable insights into the current state of the art and future directions of mechanical instrumentation and automation. Among them, Prof. Ning Sun (Nankai University, China) made a speech on Intelligent Control for Complex Underactuated Cranes with Applications. He first shared some of his team’s recent results on dynamics analysis, motion planning, and intelligent control of different crane systems, and then discussed some of their extended and related researches on robotic systems with similar dynamic characteristics. We are grateful to these esteemed speakers for sharing their knowledge and insights. The collected papers in this volume represent the culmination of rigorous research and innovative ideas presented at ICMIA 2024. These papers span a wide range of topics, including but not limited to Mechanical and Instrument Design, Instrument Science and Technology, Electronic Design Automation, Fault Diagnosis and Maintenance Theory, Automatic Detection and Instrumentation, Intelligent Instrument System, and their applications in various industrial sectors. The authors, representing a diverse array of backgrounds and institutions, have contributed their valuable research to this volume, reflecting the global reach and impact of the conference. This volume contains the invited lectures and general progress reports presented at 2024 3rd International Symposium on New Energy Technology Innovation and Low Carbon Development (NET-LC 2024). The Conference was held via hybrid form in Guangzhou, China from 29th to 31st March 2024. The motivation for NET-LC 2024 was the need for a detailed consideration of the research and development of new energy and low carbon technologies. The topics of the papers collected in this Proceedings cover but are not limited to the following areas: Renewable Energy Systems, Energy Storage Technology, Energy Materials, Electrical Batteries and BMS, Motor System Modeling and Analysis, Smart Grids, New Energy Vehicles, etc. We hope that this volume will be an important resource of information about the latest progress in new energy and low carbon technologies and will be useful, first of all, for students, but also for researchers and professionals in relevant industries. The Conference was attended by over 300 delegates from Malaysia, USA, India, Denmark, Turkey, South Korea, China, and other countries. It mainly featured opening speech, keynote speeches, oral presentations, poster presentations, closing speech, academic investigation, allowing for a relaxed discussion of research results and facilitating productive academic atmosphere. In the Conference, we had two renowned professors acting as keynote speakers to deliver speeches and share expertise insights based on their own researches for all participants to learn from. Lim Boon Han, Professor of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia, focusing on high-resolution solar irradiance and its applications to optimize PV power plants design in the tropics, shared his study Bifacial PV System in the Tropics with us. And next, Omid Mahian, Professor of Ningbo University, China, and reviewer for over 100 international journals, having published more than 200 SCI papers, made a report on Nanoparticles and Thermal Systems. While sharing their research experiences and professional insights, they interacted with the participants and answering their questions. And all the speeches were well received, triggering heated discussion. We would like to thank the invited speakers for their participation at NET-LC 2024 and for their efforts writing contributions for this paper volume. We also express our gratitude to the expert reviewers for their careful choice of the conference contributions and enormous effort. Preface

With the continuous progress of science and technology, the innovation and development in the fields of advanced manufacturing and materials engineering has become an important force to promote global industrial upgrading. It is against this backdrop that the 2024 10th International Conference on Applied Materials and Manufacturing Technology (ICAMMT 2024) gathered scholars, researchers, and industry experts in Guangzhou, China from May 22nd to 23rd, 2024 via hybrid form to share their insights and advancements in the domains of applied materials and manufacturing technology. ICAMMT is a premier interdisciplinary platform for the presentation of new advances and research results in applied materials and manufacturing technology. ICAMMT 2024 brought together leading scientists, researchers, practitioners, and other personnel to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the domains of interest from around the world to share their experiences and research results in advanced manufacturing and materials engineering, and exchange views. Themed around advanced manufacturing and materials engineering, the Conference set up a number of topics, including but not limited to: Research and Development of New Materials, Mechanical Behavior &amp; Fracture, Advanced Forming Manufacturing and Equipment, Manufacturing Systems and Automation, Measure Control Technologies and Intelligent Systems, etc. Through in-depth discussion of these topics, the Conference gathered global wisdom and strength, and jointly promoted the innovative development of applied materials and manufacturing technology. Higher Education in the New Reality: A Study of Students’ Preferences About Digital Learning in Mexico

ABSTRACT Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education students had to switch to online classes to avoid infections, so universities had to adapt to a situation known as emergency remote education and had to provide digital content to simulate the traditional classroom experience. Now, as we transition from the pandemic, returning to in-person education has been a challenge. This period, often referred to as the “new normal,” is characterized by a mix of in-person and digital learning. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate students’ preferences for digital education in this new educational landscape. In this exploratory empirical study, the preferences of undergraduate students at a private university in Mexico were evaluated through a survey. This survey was applied by the Directorate of Educational Innovation and Digital Learning through institutional means in September 2022. It had multiple-choice questions and an open final question. A total of 2725 responses were obtained. Student responses were analyzed using a mixed methods methodology. Responses to multiple-choice questions were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics, while responses to open-ended questions were analyzed using content analysis. The results show that although students prefer academic programs with 80 to 100% in-person, they also prefer digital or remote classes. This preference is highlighted by students who work and study simultaneously. These studies show that the hybrid and flexible format (HyFlex) can take off in this new normal. However, more studies are required to demonstrate its effectiveness in learning.

Strategic Bureaucracy: The Convergence of Bureaucratic and Strategic Management Logics in the Organizational Restructuring of Universities

AbstractOver recent decades, one can identify two key narratives associated with changes in university organization and governance. The first narrative focuses on the administrative consequences of an off-loading state relinquishing direct control over some of universities’ internal operations while at the same time driving bureaucratization at the institutional level. The second narrative focuses on the emergence of an increasingly competitive and uncertain environment driving universities to transform into strategically managed organizations. In this paper, we argue that while the organizational logics associated with these two narratives imply differently accentuated forms of legitimation, they converge and combine with respect to key dimensions of universities’ internal organizing, ultimately giving rise to a hybrid form of organizational governance we label ‘strategic bureaucracy’. Such strategic bureaucracy, we illustrate, is characterized by a strong focus on strategic leadership and the associated management techniques while also intensifying organizational features traditionally associated with bureaucratic governance such as formalization and hierarchical authority.

Агробиологические особенности новых гибридных форм винограда, полученных в результате скрещивания формы Филлоксероустойчивый Джемете с сортом Красностоп анапский

Abstraсt. The results of research aimed at creating new generation varieties are highlighted. The aim of the research was to study the agrobiological features of new hybrid forms of grapes obtained as a result of crossing the Fillokseroustoychivyi Dzhemete form with the variety Krasnostop Anapskiy, the prospects of their application for industrial use in plantations in the Krasnodar region. The research was carried out in the conditions of the Black Sea agroecological zone of viticulture of Krasnodar region in the period from 2021 to 2023 by classical methods, the chemical composition of berry juice was determined according to GOST 27198-87, GOST 32114-2013. The control variety was Krasnostop Anapskiy. Ampelographic description of three hybrid forms of technical grapes (K-73-1, K-74-17, 62-23) was performed and their evaluation was carried out. It was found out that by the duration of the vegetation period the form K-74-17 is referred to the middle ripening period, and K-73-1 and 62-23 to the middle late ripening period. Agrobiological indicators of the studied hybrid forms testify to good preservation of buds in the winter period. The fruitfulness coefficient k2 was the best in hybrid K-73-1 and was 1.6, which is at the level of the control variety. The actual yield per bush in the hybrids K-73-1 and 62-23 exceeded the control variety. According to the indicator of mass concentration of sugars, hybrid 62-23 was singled out with a result of 24.1 g/100 cm3 , with titratable acidity of 5.8 g/dm3 . Hybrid forms K-73-1 and K-74-17 were characterized by resistance to Plasmopara viticola Berl. et de Toni. The conducted studies allowed us to recommend forms K-73-1, K-74-17, 62-23 for further study, and DNA-marker study of genetic potential of forms K-73- 1 and K-74-17 should be carried out.
