Research on the impact of innovation investment on operating efficiency of listed forest product processing companies

PurposeThe forest products processing industry is a key component of the forestry economy, and the level of companies’ operating efficiency directly affects its profitability and market competitiveness.Design/methodology/approachIn order to deeply study the operation status of forest product processing industry, this paper takes the panel data of 70 listed forest product processing companies from 2015 to 2022 as the basis, and adopts BBC, CCR and DEA-Malmquist models to measure the operating efficiency of these companies. Meanwhile, the Tobit model is applied to deeply explore the impact of innovation input on operating efficiency.FindingsThe results of the paper show that: (1) the overall operating efficiency of listed forest product processing companies performs well, and the improvement of technology level promotes the growth of total factor productivity; (2) innovation input plays a significant positive role in listed forest product processing companies, which positively affects the operating efficiency.Practical implicationsA scientific and reasonable evaluation of the operating efficiency of listed forest product companies is of great practical significance to the development of the forestry industry The study of forest product processing industry is of key significance to the social economy.Originality/valueThis paper explores the improvement of production and operation efficiency of forest products processing enterprises for the purpose of in-depth analysis of the current situation of China's forest products processing enterprises, which is conducive to improving the innovation and operation efficiency of China's forest products processing enterprises, and realizing the high-quality development of China's forest products processing industry.

Studying the prevalence of data in the media about wild berries using content analysis

Wild plants occupy an important place in the lives of many people, especially in Yakutia. These plants serve as a unique strategic resource and food product, and contribute to maintaining health. Natural gifts such as berries, nuts and mushrooms obtained from forests contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals and beneficial properties. They are the most important basis for ensuring the lives of many residents living in remote areas of Yakutia, and serve as a source of income. The gathering, processing and sale of forest products has become a profitable business. The article reviews various aspects of the topic of wild berries in the context of mass media. The authors study the data to determine the frequency of news on this topic and their nature. As part of the study, the results of a sociological survey conducted among the population of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) were analyzed in order to find out which family members are engaged in berry picking and what are the ways of their access to the collection sites. The purpose of the study was to identify the key features of the coverage of this topic in the news. The results obtained can be used to develop strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of forest resources in Yakutia. This may involve supporting the development of local businesses related to the collection, processing and sale of forest products, as well as creating conditions for the conservation and use of forest areas on a long-term basis.

Knowledge Level of Tribal Farmers on Processing of Non-Timber Forest Products in Meghalaya, India

The study entitled “Knowledge Level of Tribal Farmers on Processing of Non-Timber Forest Products in Meghalaya” aimed to explore the knowledge level of tribal farmers regarding the processing of NTFPs, to find out the relationship between knowledge and profile characteristics of tribal farmers and to enlist the constraints faced by the tribal farmers in two districts of Meghalaya i.e., East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi district, with respondents from eight villages. An ex-post facto research design was followed and based on the availability of NTFPs in the villages and dependency, a total of 160 participants belonging to Khasi tribes were purposively selected for data collection using pre-tested interview scheduled. The study revealed a mean knowledge score of 28.17 with a half-standard deviation of 1.48. Among the respondents, more than two third i.e., 68.75 per cent had low to medium knowledge and 31.25 per cent demonstrated high knowledge levels. Correlation analysis revealed significant positive relationship between knowledge level and educational status, material possession, annual income, extension contacts and scientific orientation at the 0.01 level of significance. Marketing pattern and market orientation showed significance at the 0.05 level, while fatalism exhibited a negative correlation at the same level. The top three constraints faced by tribal farmers were insufficient infrastructure for processing and storage, lack of adequate knowledge and difficulties in accessing markets due to remote locations and poor transportation networks which need policy interventions by the concerned governmental bodies or agencies including departments or ministries of agriculture, rural development, food processing and transportation.

Rich resources from poor communities: An analysis of Namibia's access and benefit-sharing legislation

Since pre-independence, Namibia has faced wealth disparities and unfair distribution of benefits arising from natural resources. Producers, who hold traditional knowledge related to genetic resources, continue to endure poverty. In response, the Government of Namibia collaborated with various stakeholders to develop access and benefit-sharing policies and regulations. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of access and benefit-sharing legislation in distributing monetary and non-monetary benefits from users of non-timber forest products to indigenous and local communities who produce them. To achieve this, we integrated the access and benefit-sharing approaches with the value chain framework to identify gaps in the implementation of benefit-sharing. We employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating semi-structured interviews, participation in symposiums, and statistical data analysis. Our findings revealed that despite the established legislative measures aimed at improving the benefits for Namibian producers, the actual sharing of the benefits remains unsatisfactory. Only a few communities that harvest non-timber forest products had benefit-sharing agreements or joint patent ownership with global or regional industries. Moreover, the San communities, who received incentives from the Devil's Claw manufacturer in 2021, did not enter into any benefit-sharing agreements until March 2023. We suggest that the recently implemented access and benefit-sharing regulations may not fully address the benefit-sharing issues overlooked by previous policies and initiatives. Therefore, we recommend further studies in exploring the potential of establishing efficient non-timber forest product processing facilities to economically empower communities. This, will ultimately contribute to national economic growth and the achievement of sustainable development goals.

The impact of forest product collection and processing on household income in rural Liberia

Forests and trees can provide a means to alleviate poverty while simultaneously addressing climate change and other sustainability goals. However, empirical evidence on the income and livelihoods effects of collecting and processing forest products (including timber and non-timber forest products), remains limited. Evidence is especially sparse across multiple spatial scales within countries and in certain regions, such as West Africa. We respond to this knowledge gap by estimating the impacts of forest product collection and processing on smallholder household income and the spatial variability of impacts across counties and regional clusters in Liberia, the most forested country in West Africa. We applied endogenous treatment effect and multilevel mixed effects regression to survey data from a sample of 2983 forest proximate households across Liberia in 2019. Results show that the collection and processing of forest products increased household income by 139% with statistically significant variation across counties by 26%. Pathway analyses show that participation in such enterprises affected household income through both timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs), with NTFPs having higher impacts at 167% compared to timber at 115%. This study demonstrates that involvement in the forest sector can significantly enhance rural incomes and suggests that forests may form a viable pathway to realize poverty alleviation and sustainability goals in Liberia, elsewhere in West Africa, and beyond.

Theoretical preconditions for the development of accounting in forestry enterprises on the challenges of sustainable development

Purpose. The purpose of the article is the formation of theoretical principles of accounting in forestry enterprises on the challenges of the concept of sustainable development, in terms of defining the directions of improving the information support system of rational forestry for the purpose of preservation, reproduction and use of forest resources at the micro and macro levels of the economy. Results. Based on the results of the study, it is established that to ensure the functioning of domestic forestry enterprises on the principles of sustainable development, a necessary condition is to take into account economic, environmental and social goals in management. For this purpose, the directions of economic operations on forest use (harvesting and processing of forest products, reproduction of forest resources) are identified, which can be used as a basis for clarifying the composition of accounting objects specific to forest enterprises for further development of their organizational and methodological support. It is proved that forest resources and losses caused to the environment due to irrational forest use should be reflected in accounting, which will allow forming information support for forest resources management at the microeconomic level. Scientific novelty. The lack of a developed management mechanism that would ensure the conservation, reproduction and rational use of forest resources leads to the loss of national wealth. The evolution of the modern world market economy necessitates the interaction of society and nature, which is based on the postulates of the theory of sustainable development. For forestry, it is the observance of the balance of economic interests of the subjects of forest relations and the protection of forest resources. The above necessitated the delineation of areas for improving the information system of rational forest use in order to preserve, reproduce and use forest resources at the micro and macro levels of the economy. Practical value. The main results of the study can be used: at the microeconomic level (forestry enterprises) – to develop a management mechanism that would ensure the conservation, reproduction and rational use of forest resources; improvement of the system of information support of rational forest use in terms of development of organizational and methodological support of accounting of objects specific to forestry; at the macroeconomic level – to prevent the loss of a component of the country’s national wealth – forest resources; control over the availability and condition of forest resources, which is a component of economic security of the state.

A qualitative analysis of Non-Timber Forest Products activities as a strategy to promote sustainable land use in the Brazilian Cerrado

The Cerrado is one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, a key hydrological area of Brazil and home to socio-culturally diverse groups. However, the expansion of agribusiness activities in the Cerrado biome has led to acute social-ecological disturbances. Deploying strategies that promote socially and ecologically sustainable land use therein is hence imperative. One such strategy encompasses the harvesting, processing and commercialization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). This paper thus aims to uncover what interdependent social-ecological dynamics hinder and/or facilitate the consolidation of NTFP activities as a strategy to promote sustainable land use in the Cerrado and how to overcome the challenges permeating these activities. It does so by analyzing NTFP activities in Pirenópolis, Goiás, originally combining different fields of research. This research highlights social-ecological dynamics resulting in positive outcomes, such as the satisfaction of material and socio-cultural needs, the protection and planting of tree species, and a sound knowledge on the ecology and phenology of NTFPs, as well as on sustainable harvesting techniques. Notwithstanding, the results also demonstrate that power imbalances, insufficient local capacity and the agribusiness hegemony hamper NTFP activities in Pirenópolis. This paper emphasizes the urgency of addressing power asymmetries, especially considering the need for the formulation of land use policies that can tackle issues of access to land and NTFPs. This research moreover points to the importance of stronger social relations that can enhance the role of NTFP activities as a strategy to promote sustainable land use.

The aim of this research is to analyze the organization of the collection and processing of non-wood forest products in the Republic of Moldova. In order to achieve the goal, the following objectives were set: characterization of NWFPs harvesters, to establish and describe the technological processes applicable to the valorization of non-wood forest products; to analyze the organization of the collection and processing of non-wood forest products. The objectives were achieved through direct observations with NWFPs harvesters by conducting the questionnaire survey. The non-probability sampling technique used is called snowball sampling.

Since 2015 the Government of Indonesia has targeted ​​12.7 hectares land reform through the social forestry program (SFP).This paper traces village SFP beneficiaries and compares them to villages that have forests that did not receive SFP on the three islands of Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi in Indonesia. The empirical analysis used the Instrumental variable method and in-depth interviews. The findings of this study indicate that the existence of SFPs has not had a significant impact on the growth in the number of businesses and deforestation in both protected and production forests zone. The reason due to limited land due to restrictions on post-determination of social forests, the entrepreneurial capacity of forest managers, not yet integrated SFP with village programs, and low capital and utilization of forest product processing technology. Meanwhile, SFPhas not yet had an impact on deforestation because of the low quality of forest management planning and policy interventions related to forest planting in critical land that hasn’tbeen optimal yet.

Sustainability Strategy for Industrial Plantation Forest Management in Riau Province, Indonesia

Riau Province is known as an area rich in forest resources. Most of the forest area is used for industrial plantation forest management. The existence of this industrial plantation forest also supports the forest product processing industry and other industries. This study aims to develop a strategy for the sustainability of industrial plantation forest management based on 4 dimensions of sustainability. To develop a sustainable strategy for industrial plantation forest management, Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis is used with the help of RapHTI (modified Rapfish) software and prospective analysis. The results showed that the sustainable management of industrial plantation forests is an effort to accelerate national development from the ecological, economic, social, and institutional aspects. Strategies for empowering rural communities, strengthening village institutions, strengthening inter-institutional cooperation, and optimizing economic benefits are strategic steps in realizing sustainable management of industrial forest plantations. The proposed strategy for sustainable industrial plantation forest management is in line with the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Riau Province, Indonesia.

Basic elements of administration applied in the community forestry sector of Mexico: a review

Managing the use of forest resources implies deciding when, where and how to harvest to meet market demands and meet the needsof the productive unit; the organization and administration of forest production processes seek to increase the efficiency of thecompany by rationalizing existing resources. The objective of this analysis is to provide an updated review of the knowledge andvariability of the basic elements of administration applied to the community forestry sector in Mexico, through the compilation ofinformation described by national and foreign researchers. To comply with the aforementioned, the administrative actions involvedin the organization, management, transformation and commercialization of forest products were identified, in order to know theeffect that the administration has managed to generate in the community forest productive chains. It was found that the elements ofadministration allow the involved actors to strategically select the actions they wish to undertake, to make decisions that enable thecommunity forestry company to achieve the established goals. The implementation and development of administrative techniqueswill encourage forest communities in the sustainable management of human, economic and natural resources.

Assessment of the Development of Forest-Based Bioeconomy in European Regions

In recent years, the potential of the forest-based bioeconomy to provide competitiveness, differentiation, and sustainability to the European economy has often been claimed. Interestingly, regions, as territorial units with their own political and socioeconomic strategies, have been highlighted as the most suitable targets for the development of the European forest-based bioeconomy. Here, using the case method, we evaluated the development of the forest-based bioeconomy in three European regions (i.e., North Karelia in Finland, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, the Basque Country in Spain), by appraising the status of 10 previously identified key drivers through primary (interviews with experts) and secondary (literature review) sources of information. In our analysis, North Karelia and the Basque Country obtained the highest and lowest score, respectively, with regard to forest-based bioeconomy development. In any case, for the successful development of the forest-based bioeconomy in a European region, it is essential to accept the unnegotiable, critically, of the long-term sustainability of forest bioresources and production processes, as well as the need to foster the required changes in consumption patterns.

Business processes and activities of small and medium-sized enterprises for procurement, processing and selling of non-wood forest products in the Toplicko and Moravsko forest region

The entire operation of an enterprise is carried out through business processes. They represent a set of business activities, which transform available resources into results (outputs), such as a product or service. When it comes to non-wood forest products (NWFP), the business of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is based on procurement (col?lection and buying), processing and/or selling of these products. A very important aspect of SME business is cooperation with other enterprises. Cooperation can be achieved in procure?ment, production, placement, research, training, etc. This research aims to study business processes and activities, with a focus on the cooperation of NWFPs-based in the Toplicko and Moravsko forest regions. The methods of analysis and synthesis and the statistical method were used. Data collection was conducted using face to face survey with representatives of 28 NWFPs-based enterprises in March 2022. Research results indicate that the majority of SMEs perform business processes related to the procurement, processing and selling of NWFPs. The most common form of purchase is at own purchase stations (96.4%) and with collectors coming to companies (92.9%). Most enterprises do not perform secondary processing of products, but neither do they export. The most common form of placement is to ?other processors?. All analysed SMEs cooperate with other companies, but their representatives are also interested in improving that cooperation. There is a need for the improvement of business processes and the development of cooperation between NWFPs-based SMEs in selected forest regions, to increase their competitiveness.

Activity-Based Life-Cycle Costing applied to an innovative forestry company product portfolio

An accounting system helps to provide information for planning and control of production. This article presents a Life Cycle Costing by using an Activity Based Costing approach of an innovative forestry company. In order to perform a cradle-to-gate assessment the study covers the forest and industrial activities of the forest product processing. The costs of each product in the portfolio are determined by the treatment activities they undergo. The inventory covers several years of activity of the company, which makes it possible to calculate the uncertainty of the average results with Monte Carlo simulation presented in the result section. Based on the results a products portfolio analysis was performed to identify the development progress phases of the mains products to support the product rollover strategy decision.

ECONOMIC VALUATION OF THE Eucalyptus urograndis PRODUCTION IN TWO TYPES OF CONTAINERS

The systematic treatment of uncertainties associated with forest production processes allows the establishment of technical and managerial strategies to mitigate the risk inherent in the application of capital demanded in the production of cuttings. Therefore, the aim of this research was to ascertain the unit risk to produce Eucalyptus cuttings using the Monte Carlo simulation method. Based on the estimate of the production cost of Eucalyptus cuttings and in the expected revenues of six productive systems, characterized as forestry investment projects, it was possible to construct cash flows followed by the metrics used for the decision of mutually exclusive investment projects. The incorporation of risk analysis had as propositions the uncertainties associated with the productive factors, in which probability distributions were attributed. Then, pseudorandom numbers were generated by the Monte Carlo simulation method, with the purpose of measuring the stochastic economic values and the probabilities of occurrences for the project metrics. The stochastic results showed that the probability of economic viability for the analyzed conditions is null. The most critical stochastic variables of forestry projects are investments and the cycle production of cuttings.

PT Asia Forestama Raya is a forest product processing factory for the wood industry's raw materials. Based on Article 74 Paragraph (1) of Law Number 40 of 2007 concerning Limited Liability Companies, it is stipulated that companies that carry out their business activities in the natural resources sector and / or fields related to natural resources are required to implement CSR. In Article 10 of Riau Provincial Regulation Number 6 of 2012 concerning Corporate Social Responsibility in Riau Province, it is stated that CSR programs can take the form of community economic empowerment. This research aims to explain the implementation of PT Asia Forestama Raya's CSR on community economic empowerment during the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used in this research is socio-legal research. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the public really expected a real contribution from PT Asia Forestama Raya. PT Asia Forestama Raya's obstacle in implementing community economic empowerment in Limbungan Village is that the financial condition of PT Asia Forestama Raya is currently in an unstable state. Efforts that can be made by the people of Limbungan Village if PT Asia Forestama Raya doesn’t carry out a CSR program are to convey their aspirations to Commission IV of DPRD Pekanbaru City. Based on Article 32 of Riau Provincial Regulation Number 6 of 2012 concerning Corporate Social Responsibility in Riau Province, it is stated that if PT Asia Forestama Raya doesn’t carry out CSR towards empowering the community's economy, the company can be subject to administrative sanctions by the Pekanbaru City Government.

Collection and Processing of Non-timber Forest Products in North Eastern Pakistan of Azad Jammu and Kashmir: An Empirical Study

Himalayan region has diversity of Non-Timber Forest Products and is considered as biodiversity hotspot. Current research is baseline study providing information on extraction and processing of Non-Timber Forest Products especially medicinal plants in North Eastern Pakistan of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. A total of 60 respondents (local collectors) were selected based on snowball sampling procedure. Results revealed that income generation remained the prime reason for collection of Non-Timber Forest Products in both regions and collectors have to travel up to 4-6km for collection. Most (i.e.,91%) of the respondents collected Non-Timber Forest Products for medicinal reasons in Bagh District whereas vegetable collection (i.e.,86%) is the prime reason for collection in Neelam valley. Non-Timber Forest Products are mostly collected manually during summer for 6-10 hours with frequency of 1-3 times in a season. It was also observed that most of the respondents in Bagh district opted for sun drying whereas sun and shade drying remained a preference of respondents in Neelam valley. It was concluded that a public-private partnership is inevitable for sustainable harvesting, processing and marketing of Non-Timber Forest Products in the region.
