Effect of Sodium and Magnesium Sulfate on Forage Seed Germination

detected. Rate of germination decreased with increasing salt concentration. Reed canarygrass (Phuluris cunuriensis L.) had a significantly slower rate of germination than tall wheatgrass (Agropyron ekmgurum [Host] Beauv.) and tall fescue (Feshrcomrmdinaaea Schreb.). A study period of 12-16 days was used in these 3 recent studies. The incubation time rquired to stabilise the germination percent for each species in the salt solutions varied. Alkali sacaton and switcbgrass germination percent stabilized after 7 days; founving saitbusb, little bluee and green needlegrass, 21 days. The germination percent of Canby bluegrass increased throughout the 2g-day study period. Germination, after the above incubation periods, was enhanced for fourwing saltbush by the NasSO4 and MgSO4 treatments. Germination of green needlegrass and red clover was depressed by aI salt treatments, and alkali sacaitoa, little bluee (2) to document the germination percent of 8 forage species in response to the NasSO4 and MgSO4 solutions after the required incubation period. Effect of Storage at Four Locations in the West on Longevity of Forage Seeds1

SynopsisSeed of 21 grasses, 4 legumes, and 1 forb, many of which were new to agriculture, was stored for 14 years at 4 widely different locations in the West. Some seeds were processed and some were treated with a fungicide. Germination tests were made annually. The results show that longevity is a species ✕ location interaction. Processing seed did not shorten longevity materially, but treatment with the fungicide had an adverse effect.

Change of Forage Seed Quality in Commercial Warehouses in Western Oregon1

SynopsisUnder present cultural practices of seed production and systems of handling in western Oregon, safe storage period for seeds of chewings fescue, Alta fescue, and sudangrass is 15 months; crimson clover, 3 years; highland bentgrass, 4 years; and common ryegrass, 5 years.

Respiration of Forage Seed in Hermetically Sealed Cans1

SynopsisCrimson clover seed respired less than perennial ryegrass seed stored under similar moisture and temperature conditions. Seed respiration was affected more by moisture content than by temperature. Carbon dioxide fixation was indicated in viable seed stored in hermetically sealed cans. Seed respiration decreased with increasing length of storage period.

Interaction of Moisture and Temperature on Viability of Forage Seeds Stored in Hermetically Sealed Cans1

SynopsisCrimson clover containing 6% moisture remained highly viable after 3 years under all temperature conditions, while ryegrass showed some decline in germination at 38° C. Seed with 8% moisture preserved well except at 38° C., whereas seed with 12 and 16% moisture remained viable only at 3° C. Seed with 16 and 20% moisture at 22° and 38° C. deteriorated within 3 months. Decline of viability could be retarded by improved storage conditions.

Seedling Competition in Compounding Forage Seed Mixtures1

SynopsisVirginia studies show that seed ratio in mixtures of species should differ with spring and summer seedings. Summer alfalfa seedlings developed faster than spring, but stands were similar. Spring seeding of red clover had faster growth and better stands than summer. Orchardgrass weights and stands were similar for both dates, but yields were higher from spring than from summer seedings. Red clover suppressed spring alfalfa and orchardgrass seedings.
