The impact of obesity on foot morphology in women aged 48 years or older

Background: Obesity is major risk factor for many diseases within society and represents extensive loads for the feet which lead to various foot disorders and deformities. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of obesity as represented by percent body fat (PBF) on foot morphology. Methods: The study sample included 139 Czech women aged 48-69 years. The women were divided into two groups by PBF: non-obese women (NOW) (n = 66; PBF 35%). Measurements included % PBF and width, length and angle dimensions of foot. The Chippaux-Smirak index (CSI) was calculated for each foot. Results: We found significant differences between OW and NOW in these parameters: direct forefoot width (sin. p = .02, rpb = .20), direct heel width (sin. p = .01, rpb = .22; dex. p < .01, rpb = .22), hallux angle (sin. p = .01, rpb = .25) and CSI (sin. p < .01, rpb = .26; dex. p < .01, rpb = .27). The results showed that the mean values of the heel width and CSI were significantly higher in OW on both feet, the mean values of forefoot width only on the left foot. Conclusions: Results proved that obesity impacts all parts of the foot (heel, longitudinal foot arch, forefoot). Despite significant differences of the CSI between NOW and OW, the number of subjects with flat feet was in both groups negligible.

The effect of facing direction on static balance of children while standing on stairs

Background: Balance control is essential to all upright activities, and can be influenced by environmental conditions and tasks. While standing on higher surface, the perception of height was changes in the adults that they might overestimate the height and adopt different strategies, such as stiffness strategy.Children need to stand and engage activities on higher surfaces occasionally, such as playing at playground or walking up/down stairs, but the immature sensory, motor and cognitive development, and insufficient experiences make them unable to balance or react as appropriate as adults. It is hypothesized that facing direction (ascending or descending) while standing on stairs would affect the height perception of children, and thus change their balance control in static stance. Purpose: To investigate the effect of facing direction on the center of pressure (COP) parameters in typically developing children aged 6–9 years while standing on a staircase. Methods: Thirteen children aged 6–9 years (6 girls, 7 boys) were recruited for the study. The average body height was 129.23 cm (SD 11.11), and body weight was 31.15 kg (SD 11.24). Foot length (FL) was measured from the heel to the tip of the big toe, and was used for normalizing the differences of body statue. Ground reaction forces were measured by a portable force plate (9286BA, Kistler Instruments Ltd, Switzerland). The data was collected when the participants maintained static standing for 20 seconds on a staircase with 90 cm in height under two conditions, facing ascending (AscD) and descending direction (DesD). BioWare 4.1 was used to calculate the center of pressure (COP). Twoway ANOVA with repeated measure (height x direction) and pairwise comparisons were employed to verify differences in total path length, sway area, root mean square (RMS) of COP displacement, RMS of COP velocity, and mean power frequency (MPF) of COP. Results:The results indicated there is no interaction effect of height and facing direction on all COP parameters. Height had significant main effect on COP displacement and mean power frequency in antero-posterior (AP) direction. Facing direction had significant main effect on total path length, and RMS of COP velocity in AP direction. While facing AscD, the normalized total path length (112.76± 7.08% of foot length) was significantly larger than DesD (107.23± 6.70% of FL); the RMS of COP velocity in AP direction was significantly larger in AsD (6.34± 0.34% of FL•sec) than that in DesD (5.99± 0.31% of FL•sec). Conclusion(s): It is expected that facing DesD should put more threats on the children than AscD, and thus the children might show increases in COP velocity when facing DesD. However, the results demonstrate that sway velocity in AP direction and total path length of COP is greater when facing AsD than facing DesD, which were not consistent with the adults’ findings. Future studies should increase age range of the participants, so at what age the children adopt the adults’ like strategies can be determined. Implications: This study may help in understanding the development of balance control in children. This matter should be taken into consideration when planning the environment for children at different age.

Gait Cycle Analysis

Video-assisted gait kinetics analysis has been a sensitive method to assess rat sciatic nerve function after injury and repair. However, in conduit repair of sciatic nerve defects, previously reported kinematic measurements failed to be a sensitive indicator because of the inferior recovery and inevitable joint contracture. This study aimed to explore the role of physiotherapy in mitigating joint contracture and to seek motion analysis indices that can sensitively reflect motor function. Data were collected from 26 rats that underwent sciatic nerve transection and conduit repair. Regular postoperative physiotherapy was applied. Parameters regarding step length, phase duration, and ankle angle were acquired and analyzed from video recording of gait kinetics preoperatively and at regular postoperative intervals. Stride length ratio (step length of uninjured foot/step length of injured foot), percent swing of the normal paw (percentage of the total stride duration when the uninjured paw is in the air), propulsion angle (toe-off angle subtracted by midstance angle), and clearance angle (ankle angle change from toe off to midswing) decreased postoperatively comparing with baseline values. The gradual recovery of these measurements had a strong correlation with the post-nerve repair time course. Ankle joint contracture persisted despite rigorous physiotherapy. Parameters acquired from a 2-dimensional motion analysis system, that is, stride length ratio, percent swing of the normal paw, propulsion angle, and clearance angle, could sensitively reflect nerve function impairment and recovery in the rat sciatic nerve conduit repair model despite the existence of joint contractures.

Comparison of the Foot Height, Length, Breadth and Types between Santhals and Bangalees of Pirganj, Rangpur

Context: The structural and functional components of the foot are composed of highly refined interrelated segments which provide a stable base for supporting the body in both load support and shock absorption during standing, running, walking and jumping. The study was aimed to measure the foot of adult Santhal males of Pirganj upazilla, Rangpur to find out to racial characteristics of their own and compare with Bangalee adult males of the same area. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on 60 (sixty) adult male Santhals and 120 (one hundred and twenty) adult male Bangalees. Foot length, foot breadth and foot height was measured. Foot index was calculated and foot shape was determined. Results: Height, length and breadth of foot were higher in Bangalees than Santhals and showed a significantly higher value for the foot length. Regarding the foot shape, slender foot was found more in Bangalees but most of these two groups have standard foot shape. Conclusion: In the present study significantly higher value of foot length and higher percentage of slender foot in Bangalees but higher percentage of broad foot among the Santhals were found . The reliability of a newborn foot length measurement tool used by community volunteers to identify low birth weight or premature babies born at home in southern Tanzania.

BackgroundLow birthweight babies need extra care, and families need to know whether their newborn is low birthweight in settings where many births are at home and weighing scales are largely absent. In the context of a trial to improve newborn health in southern Tanzania, a counselling card was developed that incorporated a newborn foot length measurement tool to screen newborns for low birth weight and prematurity. This was used by community volunteers at home visits and shows a scale picture of a newborn foot with markers for a ‘short foot’ (<8 cm). The tool built on previous hospital based research that found newborn foot length <8 cm to have sensitivity and specificity to identify low birthweight (<2500 g) of 87% and 60% respectively.MethodsReliability of the tool used by community volunteers to identify newborns with short feet was tested. Between July-December 2010 a researcher accompanied volunteers to the homes of babies younger than seven days and conducted paired measures of newborn foot length using the counselling card tool and using a plastic ruler. Intra-method reliability of foot length measures was assessed using kappa scores, and differences between measurers were analysed using Bland and Altman plots.Results142 paired measures were conducted. The kappa statistic for the foot length tool to classify newborns as having small feet indicated that it was moderately reliable when applied by volunteers, with a kappa score of 0.53 (95% confidence interval 0.40 – 0.66) . Examination of differences revealed that community volunteers systematically underestimated the length of newborn feet compared to the researcher (mean difference −0.26 cm (95% confidence interval −0.31—0.22), thus overestimating the number of newborns needing extra care.ConclusionsThe newborn foot length tool used by community volunteers to identify small babies born at home was moderately reliable in southern Tanzania where a large number of births occur at home and scales are not available. Newborn foot length is not the best anthropometric proxy for birthweight but was simple to implement at home in the first days of life when the risk of newborn death is highest.

Gender and age related differences in foot morphology

ObjectiveThis study has assessed age-related changes of foot morphology for developing appropriate footwear with particular reference to the elderly. MethodsAnatomical parameters such as foot length, circumference and height and ankle length, circumference and height were assessed in a sample of males (n=577) and females (n=528) divided into three age groups. The groups included young-adult, aged between 20 and 25 years; adult, aged between 35 and 55 years; and old, aged between 65 and 70 years individuals. ResultsIn terms of gender differences, in young-adult individuals the sex-related morphological differences observed, are just related to a significantly lower length of foot in females. In adult subjects morphological parameters investigated were significantly lower in females even after normalization for foot length. In old individuals, no differences of the parameters were found after normalization for foot length. Comparative analysis of morphometric data between young-adult and adult individuals revealed that the instep length was smaller in adults. The opposite was observed for the great toe and medial foot arch height. Length of ankle was higher in adult than in young-adult individuals, whereas ankle circumference and height were smaller. In old vs adult individuals foot circumference showed the most relevant age-related differences. ConclusionsFeet anatomy presents specific characteristics in different ages of life. The ideal footwear should take into account these characteristics. This is true primarily for the elderly for minimizing the risk of falls or of other problems related to inappropriate footwear.

Relationship between gestational age &amp; anthropometric parameters of neonates - A preliminary study

Furthermore, in cases of sexual abuse, the court may need to know the period of gestation of the infant, to date the crime. However, for assessment of gestational age Sri Lankan anthropometric data is not available. The weight recorded at birth was taken while a non-stretchable, standard tape was used to measure the OFC. The values ranged from 1300g to 3850g for weight, 25cm to 36.4cm for OFC, 34.4mm to 72.16mm for HL and 55mm to 87.7mm for FL. &lt;p align="left"&gt;Two new species of Dendrobium (Orchidaceae: Epidendroideae) from China: evidence from morphology and DNA

Two new orchid species, Dendrobium wenshanense and D. longlingense, from Yunnan, China, are described and illustrated in this study based on morphological and molecular evidence. Morphological analysis indicates that D. wenshanense is similar to D. wilsonii and D. fanjingshanense, but they differ in floral color, length of column foot and shapes/sizes of sepals, petals and lip; D. longlingense is similar to D. longicornu, but differs in presence of black hairs on adaxial surface of leaf, position of inflorescences, floral color and shapes of lip and spur. Molecular analysis of combined nuclear and plastid datasets (ITS, matK, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnL intron) reveals that D. wenshanense is sister to D. wilsonii and D. fanjingshanense and a member of section Dendrobium; D. longlingense is sister to D. longicornu and a member of section Formosae.

Standard growth of the foot arch in childhood and adolescence--derived from the measurement results of 10,155 children.

The definition of flatfoot remains analytically vague. Toward the purpose of establishing the standard values of the foot length and arch height in childhood and adolescence, large-scale measurement and investigation of the foot arch were conducted using a three-dimensional foot-measuring device. Measurements of foot structure were performed on 5311 boys and 4844 girls, for a total of 20,310 ft. of 10,155 children aged from 6 to 18 years during the 2006-2008 year period. The foot length (FL) and the navicular height (NH) were measured, and the arch height ratio (AHR (%)=NH×100/FL) was calculated. The FL in boys showed an extension from the age of 6 to 14 and nearly reached a plateau at 14 years old. In girls, the extension was observed from the age of 6 to 13, and the FL came to a plateau at 13 years old. The NH in boys increased from the age of 6 to 13. In girls, the NH increased from the age of 8 to 13. The AHR, presented a normal distribution, and no differences were observed in the distribution for all ages in boys and girls. In boys, the AHR was almost flat until 11 years old, but elevated in the 11-13 year age period. In girls, the AHR was almost flat until 10 years old, but elevated in the 10-12 year age period. We are certain that the data demonstrating the normal growth of the foot contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of the failure of the foot to thrive.

Microsatellite polymorphism and its association with body weight and selected morphometrics of farm red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.).

Polymorphism of 30 canine-derived microsatellites was studied in a group of 200 red foxes kept on 2 Polish farms. 22 out of 30 microsatellites were selected to study association between marker genotypes and body weight (BW), body length (BL), body circumference (BC), tail length (TL), ear height (EH), length of the right front limb (FRLL), length of the right rear limb (RRLL), length of the right front foot (FRFL) and length of the right rear foot (RRFL). A total of 112 alleles and 243 genotypes were found at 22 autosomal microsatellite loci. Three monomorphic loci deemed as uninformative were excluded from the study. The association between marker genotypes and the studied traits was analysed using general linear model (GLM) procedure and least squares means (LSM). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) was estimated to assess non-random association between microsatellite loci. Out of 19 microsatellites studied four markers showed no association with the studied traits, three markers had a significant effect on one trait, and another three markers had significant effect on two traits. Among ten microsatellites with significant effect on four economically important traits (BW, BL, BC, TL) four were associated with two characters: marker FH2613 with BW and BC, marker FH2097withBL and BC, marker ZUBECA6 with BW and BC, whereas marker REN75M10 was associated with BL and TL. The strongest LD (r2 ranged from 0.15 to 0.33) was estimated between nine loci with significant effect on economically important traits (BW, BL, BC, TL).

Determination of Required Insulation for Preventing Early-Age Cracking in Mass Concrete Footings

One of the methods for controlling the heat of hydration of mass concrete structures is to insulate the poured concrete. Currently, no method can provide adequate insulation to prevent early-age cracking for mass concrete footings. This study developed a method for determining the required insulation for rectangular footings. The study included isothermal calorimetry testing of cementitious materials, field monitoring of temperature in footings, and finite element modeling. A fully insulated bridge pier footing constructed in the field in Florida was monitored for temperature development and for assessing the efficiency of the insulation used. A parametric study consisting of 63 finite element analyses was conducted on three footing shape—cubic footing, 4:4:1 footing (length–width–depth ratio of 4:4:1), and 4:2:1 footing (length–width–depth ratio of 4:2:1)—to determine the required insulation for footings with a volume-to-surface area ratio ranging from 1.1 to 13.1 ft. The obtained results suggest that the Styrofoam insulation used for the specific monitored footing might be excessive; therefore, the actual insulation thickness of 2 in. should be reduced to 1 in. to reduce the construction cost. In general, with a volume-to-surface area ratio of less than 4.0 ft, under the same insulation condition and with the same concrete mix, larger footings require a greater thickness of insulation. However, with a volume-to-surface area ratio of 4.0 ft or greater, larger footings only require a similar thickness of insulation to prevent cracking. The developed method for determining the required insulation for footings presented in this paper would be a practice ready for implementing in the field.

EFFECT OF THYROXINE ON THE MORPHOMETRIC STUDIES OF TOAD, BUFO STOMATICUS

The present study deals with the effect of thyroxine on the young toads of Bufo stomaticus. The Toads were exposed to two different doses of thyroxine i.e. 10 -2 thyroxine and 10 -4 thyroxine. Experiment was conducted for 15 days. The young toads were examine for various morphometric parameters viz:Snout to Vent Length (SVL), Head Length (HL), Head Width (HW), Diameter of Eye (DOE), Inter Orbital Space (IOS), Hand Length (HAL), Foot Length (FL), Tibea Length (TL), Leg length (LL), Arm Length (AL), First Finger Length (FFL) and Second Finger length (SFL).The results were statistically analyzed and significant changes were observed on the selected parameters.

ANALYSES OF MULTI-EDGE FOOTINGS RESTED ON LOOSE AND DENSE SAND

Shallow footings are generally designed as square, rectangular, strip, circular or ring in geotechnical engineering. In some cases, different shallow footing geometries (irregular footing geometries) also can be selected because of the static, architectural and economical reasons. Multi-edge shallow footings are irregular shaped footings having the number of the edges and sides greater than four. They are used to transmit the loads from the irregular shaped structures to the underlying soils safely and economically. The study presented herein describes the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and multi-linear regression model (MLR) for prediction of ultimate loads of multi-edge shallow footings. The data used in running of network models have been obtained from extensive series of laboratory model tests. The parameters investigated are the footing width, the footing length and the density of sand soil. A total of fifty tests were performed using the parameters of the footing geometry (H, +, T and square shaped), the footing size and the soil type (loose sand, dense sand) on the bearing capacity characteristics. The results of the experimental study proved that the soil density and the footing size had considerable eects on the load of and the ANN model serves as simple and reliable tool for predicting the behavior of the multi-edge footings.

Experimental studies on passive dynamic bipedal walking

Passive dynamic walking is a gait developed, partially or in whole, by the energy provided by gravity. The research on passive dynamic bipedal walking helps create an understanding of walking mechanics. Moreover, the experimental passive dynamic research provides a base to compare and validate computer simulation results. An improved kneed bipedal walking mechanism was designed and built to study the passive gait patterns. The first aim of this study is to determine the equivalency of testing a passive dynamic biped walker on a treadmill to testing on a ramp. Based on the small difference between the gait patterns measured on the two test platforms, testing on a treadmill was found equivalent to testing on a ramp. Gait measurements were then conducted on the treadmill to evaluate the effects of the treadmill inclination angle, mass distribution of the biped, and the length of flat feet on the gait pattern. Results show that most of these parameters had significant effects on the step length, step period and hip velocity of the passive walker. Our experimental results are also compared with previous experimental results.

Estimation of stature by foot length in males

Examination of footprint provides important evidence in a crime scene investigation as it helps in the estimation of stature of a criminal. Significant and positive correlation coefficient has been shown to exist between stature and measurements of foot prints. The study was carried out in Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College, Gulbarga. Total of 100 male students from 1st semester to 5th semester are included in the study. The aim and objective of the intended study were properly explained to all the students and consent is taken on the proforma. Individual student foot length and stature are taken separately. The length of foot is measured from outer most margin of heel to the tip of extension of longest toe in both the feet with the help of a verniers caliper and it is recorded in centimeters. In the present study a significant correlation of stature with right and left foot length has been observed (P 0.01). The results show that there is no statistically significant difference in right and left foot length in male students (P&gt;0.05). Either right or left foot length may be used to predict the stature by regression formula.

Calf Muscle (Triceps Surae Complex) Thickness in an Adult Nigerian Population: An Imaging Based Normographic Study

Objective: The thickness of the triceps surae muscle complex was assessed by ultrasound in a young adult Nigerian population. Its relationship with some anthropometric variables and sexual dimorphism was also assessed. Subjects and Methods: Sixty young adults (30 males and 30 females) between the ages of 19 and 30 years were recruited for the study. Anthropometric protocols for height, weight, foot length (FL) lower leg length (LLL) and mid calf circumference (MCC) were observed. Results: Results show that the mean thickness of the calf muscle complex (CMT) was 81.65 ± 8.92 mm for all the subjects; 83.70 ± 8.73 mm for males; 79.95 ± 8.56 mm for females. The mean mid calf circumference (MCC) was 35.26 ± 2.61 cm for all subjects; 36.41 ± 3.56 cm for males; 34.10 ± 3.33 cm for females. Pearson’s correlation coefficient showed that CMT correlated positively with height, weight, BMI and BSA in the sample subjects. However, such correlations were not observed among the male subjects. MCC also correlated with some anthropometric parameters (height, weight, BMI, BSA, FL) measured. Conclusion: The findings from this study will form the bases for further research on relationships of the calf muscle complex. It also indicates that males have thicker Calf muscles and CMT has a positive relationship with height, weight, BMI and BSA especially among the female subjects.

Stature Estimation from Hand and Foot Length in Bhopal Region

Ascertaining sex and estimation of stature from incomplete skeletal and decomposing bodies is a recurring theme in physical anthropology and forensic science. This has become useful in recent times due to mass disasters like plane crash, mass suicide, tsunamis, forest fires, earth quakes. The present investigation was conducted to study hand lengths, widths, height, stature ratio and indices for bilateral differences. Data for the study was obtained from 140 students with mean age of 18.95 ± 1.15 years from chirayu medical college and hospital Bhopal. Height of subject, length and width of hand and foot were measured following standard protocols using vernier calliper and measuring tape. In all anthropometric parameters measured or calculated males were significantly (P<0.001) higher. Significant relationships were established between height, hand lengths and width, foot length and width in both sexes. Multiple linear regression analysis of hand and foot lengths generated predictive equations with statistical significant (P <0.001) ability for height prediction. The results showed a significant correlation between hand length and foot length. Height could be accurately predicted from a combination of right and left hand and foot lengths which will be useful in forensic investigation, medico-legal cases for the identification of body parts as well as in cosmetic surgery.

The study aimed at: Determining the simple anthropometric factor construction for the Female Students of the college of Sport Education at Mosul University. The population of the study included (75) sport education female students in all four grades in the academic year (2010-2011). The sample of the study consisted of (45) female students representing (60) % of the population and the method for collecting data used in the study included (26) anthropometric measurements including length, circumferences, width, and thickness of skinfolds. Data were analyzed by factor analysis using orthogonal rotation. The results of the study included: - Factor analysis using orthogonal rotation performed on (26) anthropometric measurements of the Female Students of Sport Education college showed eight factors form which six were accepted based on the applied conditions for accepting the factor . - The accepted factors resulting from the anthropometric measurements can be termed as follows : • Weight growth measurement factor • Body fat growth factor • Body length factor • Weight and circumference factors • Upper limbs width factor • upper and lower limbs lengths' Factor A number of measurements were derived based on the accepted factors that represent the anthropometric measurement indices including (leg circumferences , skinfolds for tricps musule, length of leg, body weight, width of shoulders, and length of foot) Keywords: Factorial construction-Anthropometric measurements- Female students
