A scanning confocal second sound microscope operating in liquid helium has been developed. The principle of operation is similar to scanning confocal laser microscopy or scanning acoustic microscopy but second sound waves are employed for imaging. The detected phase and amplitude of the second sound signals are used to create images by scanning a focusing transducer in two dimensions. For samples with height steps or grids we could demonstrate a lateral resolution of 170 μm and a height resolution of better than 1 μm in reflection. For electrically heated emitting samples a lateral resolution of 210 μm was observed.
