Hemodynamics and wall shear metrics in a pulmonary autograft: Comparing a fluid-structure interaction and computational fluid dynamics approach

ObjectiveIn young patients, aortic valve disease is often treated by placement of a pulmonary autograft (PA) which adapts to its new environment through growth and remodeling. To better understand the hemodynamic forces acting on the highly distensible PA in the acute phase after surgery, we developed a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) framework and comprehensively compared hemodynamics and wall shear-stress (WSS) metrics with a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation. MethodsThe FSI framework couples a prestressed non-linear hyperelastic arterial tissue model with a fluid model using the in-house coupling code CoCoNuT. Geometry, material parameters and boundary conditions are based on in-vivo measurements. Hemodynamics, time-averaged WSS (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI) and topological shear variation index (TSVI) are evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively for 3 different sheeps. ResultsDespite systolic-to-diastolic volumetric changes of the PA in the order of 20 %, the point-by-point correlation of TAWSS and OSI obtained through CFD and FSI remains high (r > 0.9, p < 0.01) for TAWSS and (r > 0.8, p < 0.01) for OSI). Instantaneous WSS divergence patterns qualitatively preserve similarities, but large deformations of the PA leads to a decrease of the correlation between FSI and CFD resolved TSVI (r < 0.7, p < 0.01). Moderate co-localization between FSI and CFD is observed for low thresholds of TAWSS and high thresholds of OSI and TSVI. ConclusionFSI might be warranted if we were to use the TSVI as a mechano-biological driver for growth and remodeling of PA due to varying intra-vascular flow structures and near wall hemodynamics because of the large expansion of the PA.

Patient-Specific Numerical Simulations of Coronary Artery Hemodynamics and Biomechanics: A Pathway to Clinical Use.

Numerical models that simulate the behaviors of the coronary arteries have been greatly improved by the addition of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) methods. Although computationally demanding, FSI models account for the movement of the arterial wall and more adequately describe the biomechanical conditions at and within the arterial wall. This offers greater physiological relevance over Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, which assume the walls do not move or deform. Numerical simulations of patient-specific cases have been greatly bolstered by the use of imaging modalities such as Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to reconstruct accurate 2D and 3D representations of artery geometries. The goal of this study was to conduct a comprehensive review on CFD and FSI models on coronary arteries, and evaluate their translational potential. This paper reviewed recent work on patient-specific numerical simulations of coronary arteries that describe the biomechanical conditions associated with atherosclerosis using CFD and FSI models. Imaging modality for geometry collection and clinical applications were also discussed. Numerical models using CFD and FSI approaches are commonly used to study biomechanics within the vasculature. At high temporal and spatial resolution (compared to most cardiac imaging modalities), these numerical models can generate large amount of biomechanics data. Physiologically relevant FSI models can more accurately describe atherosclerosis pathogenesis, and help to translate biomechanical assessment to clinical evaluation.

Adaptive Immersed Mesh Method (AIMM) for Fluid–Structure Interaction

Our paper proposes an innovative approach for modeling Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI).Our method combines both traditional monolithic and partitioned approaches, creating a hybrid solution that facilitates FSI. At each time iteration, the solid mesh is immersed within a fluid-solid mesh, all while maintaining its independent Lagrangian hyperelastic solver. The Eulerian mesh encompasses both the fluid and solid components and accommodates various physical phenomena. We enhance the interaction between solid and fluid through anisotropic mesh adaptation and the Level-Set methods. This enables a more accurate representation of their interaction. Together, these components constitute the Adaptive Immersed Mesh Method (AIMM). For both solvers, we utilize the Variational Multi-Scale (VMS) method, mitigating potential spurious oscillations common with piecewise linear tetrahedral elements. The framework operates in 3D with parallel computing capabilities. Our method’s accuracy, robustness, and capabilities are assessed through a series of 2D numerical problems. Furthermore, we present various three-dimensional test cases and compare their results to experimental data.

Stability Evaluation of a Simplified Reclaimer Using Fluid–Structure Interaction

This paper describes the numerical modeling and simulation of the wind effects on an ore reclaimer structure using analytical and numerical methods. The physical model is a large machine with a height of 34 m and a width of 77 m, and due to its complexity, a simplified model was used. This study aims to investigate the influence of wind speed on the stability failure of the reclaimer and to provide a more efficient and precise stopping criterion. The simulations were performed using a two-way FSI (fluid–structure interaction) approach. An FSI analysis was performed to study the dynamic behavior of a numerical model consisting of two separate parts with contact constraints. This article also highlights the importance of FSI in improving the reliability of the stability failure. Finally, the numerical results showed differences compared to the analytical model, and the wind load limit to stability failure was observed at higher wind speeds. The structure was able to support wind velocities higher than suggested by the FEM (European Materials Handling Federation) standard without stability fails.

An Investigation on an SMA Valve in Micro-Channel Through FSI Approach

Micro-channels with built-in shape memory alloys (SMAs) can respond intelligently to channel temperature variations without applying an external force and control the flow rate. In this work, a 2D micro-channel with a shape memory alloy (SMA) valve is designed and studied using fluid–structure interaction (FSI) conditions. The behavior of the SMA valve, which includes bending under the effect of force loading and inlet fluid pressure, and the recovery of the shape of the valve, has been investigated in this study. The temperature at which the valve is completely recovered and the output fluid reaches the lowest value is called the closing temperature. This research investigates the impact of different geometrical and functional parameters on closing temperature, such as fluid inlet pressure and velocity, channel height and valve thickness. The outlet fluid flow rate of the SMA micro-channel is evaluated by employing a relevant constitutive equation to model the SMA valve behavior and implement it in Finite Element Method (FEM) multiphysics frameworks. The results show that the outlet flow rate relies on the shape recovery of the SMA valve and the fluid velocity field in the FSI simulations.

Investigating hermetic reciprocating compressor performance by using various machine learning methods

Due to their durability and efficiency, hermetic reciprocating compressors (HRCs) are used in refrigeration and air conditioning. Compressor performance and reliability concerns reduce system efficiency and raise maintenance costs. Machine learning (ML) is being used to improve hermetic reciprocating compressor performance, reliability, and energy economy. ML is used in hermetic reciprocating compressors for issue identification, performance improvement, predictive maintenance, and energy management. This research compared HRC performance factors such as mass flow rate, cooling capacity, compression power, coefficient of performance, exhaust line losses, and volumetric efficiency. Simple regression, probabilistic neural network, gradient boosted, polynomial regression, and random forest (RF) were used to examine and evaluate these parameters as outputs. Over three cycles, the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) approach assessed compressor performance parameters. For compressor speeds of 1300, 2100, and 3000 rpm, mass flow rate, compression power, cooling efficiency coefficient, and exhaust line energy losses varied by 10%, 4%, 5%, and 6%. To gather ML algorithm inputs, the research used experimental, fluid-structure interaction, and ML methodologies. Experimental and FSI approaches produced 108 data points. These data points were randomly assigned, with 70% for learning and 30% for prediction. The mean convergence criterion for mass flow rate, cooling capacity, compression power, cooling efficiency coefficient, exhaust line energy losses, and volumetric efficiency parameters was 0.9966, 0.9969, 0.9572, 0.0561, 0.9925, and 0.4640 for all ML methods. Simple regression, probabilistic neural networks, gradient boosted, polynomial regression, and RF convergence criteria were 0.8978, 0.9999, 0.6016, 0.4439, and 0.7761.

A general FSI framework for an effective stress analysis on composite wind turbine blades

The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) technique has been extensively used and developed in the past decades. Commonly, the reduced-order models are used in FSI analyses to assure the numerical robustness and efficiency. However, due to the increasing demand for higher numerical resolutions in modern wind turbine composite blade applications, intrinsic limitations of reduced-order models, such as their inability to account for complex aerodynamic flow interactions, multi-motion couplings, and sophisticated composite properties, have become the weaknesses in existing reduced-order FSI approaches. In this study, we propose a general FSI framework, which combines the advantages of high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and robust Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) methods, and detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for analysing the detailed stress distributions on the composite structures. The results of predicted dynamics and the Von Mises stress on the composite blade structures under given operation condition are compared and reasonably agreed with the literature results, with a significant computational cost reduction by nearly 25% is achieved. The proposed FSI framework can be a general approach to investigate the multi-physical interactions where the composite structure specifications are involved, coupling with complex dynamic motions in three-dimensional space.

Non-Newtonian pulsatile blood flow through the stenosed arteries: comparison between the viscoelastic and elastic arterial wall in response to the alterations

:In this study, we investigate the impact of aortic stenosis on the hemodynamics of pulsatile blood flow within a 3D aortic model. Employing a non-Newtonian Casson model with a hematocrit of 45%, our study introduces a preliminary hypothesis to simulate blood flow dynamics, incorporating both linear elastic and viscoelastic models to define the mechanical characteristics of the artery. Through simulations conducted with Ansys-Cfx (version 15), we utilize a 2-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) approach, employing a Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation with second-order accuracy. We explore the influence of stenosis severity on variables including velocity profiles, pressure distribution, shear stress, wall displacement, and changes in the OSI parameter. Our investigation encompasses arteries with both elastic and viscoelastic walls. The key findings that arise from our results highlight the viscoelastic model’s demonstration of reduced radial wall displacement when compared to the linear elastic model. Additionally, we observe that elevated arterial stenosis percentages lead to the elongation of vortex length, heightened wall shear stress, and increased slope of velocity profiles downstream of the stenosed region. Furthermore, bulky obstruction of viscoelastic arteries as opposed to elastic, resulted in a maximum 5 percent increase in velocity profile and a 29.6% decrease in radial displacement. The zenith of shear stress occurs concomitantly with the velocity’s peak within the stenosed area. Viscoelastic arterial wall shear stress at the stenosis site escalates due to the rapid expansion of the stenosis. The viscoelastic wall, responding with a blend of viscous and elastic characteristics to applied stress, undergoes slight deformation in shape. Following stress reduction, the wall gradually reverts to its original form, thus alleviating some of the applied stress. In contrast, the elastic wall retains its altered shape due to stress preservation within the material. Additionally, we ascertain an augmentation in radial displacement corresponding with increased artery stenosis.

Fluid structural interaction simulation of the MP-1 plate performance irradiated in the advanced test reactor

Due to the high neutron fluxes they generate and increased heat transfer performance, plate type fuels are used in the U.S. high-performance research reactors. During irradiation, a significant amount of fission energy (i.e., ∼200 MeV per atom) is released by the U-235 chain reaction that is carried away by the coolant. Through thermal hydraulic analysis, the coolant’s heat transfer capability is investigated to ensure that the desired fuel temperature can be maintained. At high temperatures, the plate undergoes elastic/plastic deformation, creep, and swelling as a result of both the temperature gradients and the fission gas production within the fuel. These effects are studied via fuel performance analysis. When the plate deformation is small enough that the coolant flow remains relatively unchanged, conducting these two types of analyses independently will suffice. But at high fuel burnups, the swollen plates may encroach into the coolant channels that separate the fuel plates from each other and cause these channels to narrow. Large reductions in channel gap size imperil cooling performance, causing fuel temperatures to rise. If the plate deformation is asymmetric, the fuel centerline will shift toward one side of the channel, causing an uneven reduction in coolability. In addition, a boehmite (oxide) layer will, over time, grow on the plate surface, further obstructing the heat transfer process. To precisely predict fuel temperatures/deformation, a complete coupled analysis that considers coolant flow, heat transfer, oxide growth, elastic/plastic deformation, creep, and swelling is needed; however, this type of analysis method is not available in the literature. To fill the gap, this research developed a fluid structure interaction (FSI) approach to the fuel plate analysis, then successfully applied it to the Mini-Plate (MP)-1 experiment, which was irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) for both one and two cycles. The complete analysis coupled STAR-CCM+, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software for calculating flow, with Abaqus, a finite element analysis code for calculating plate deformation. Improvements in the results were found when comparing the fully coupled analysis to the independently conducted analyses but they were not significant due to the miniature size of the plates and the relatively short irradiation time. In the future, the fully coupled approach presented herein will be applied to full-size fuel plates with longer irradiation cycles once additional experiments become available.

Effect of stenotic shapes and arterial wall elasticity on the hemodynamics

The present study employs an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian fluid–structure interaction approach to investigate pulsatile blood flow through a deformable stenosed channel. The flow is modeled by solving the incompressible continuity and momentum equations using finite element-based commercial solver COMSOL Multiphysics®. In this work, we explore the effects of different stenotic shapes—elliptical, round, and sinusoidal, degrees of stenosis (30%, 50%, and 70%), and arterial wall stiffnesses—0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 MPa on the velocity profile, pressure and wall shear stress distribution, and wall deformation. The oscillatory shear index (OSI) is analyzed to predict further plaque formation in the stenosed artery. We find that the flow velocity, wall shear stress, and pressure difference across the stenosed region increase with an increase in the stenotic severity and artery stiffness. The velocity profiles intersect at a radial location in the stenotic region termed critical radius, where relative magnitudes get reversed. With the increase in stenotic severity, the wall displacement decreases at the throat and increases at the upstream side. With the increase in wall stiffness, the wall deformation decreases, and shear stress increases, thereby increasing the pressure drop across the stenosed region. At a lower mass flow rate and a higher degree of stenosis, the vortices are formed upstream and downstream of the stenosed region for all stenotic shapes. The vorticity magnitude is found to be more than 21% higher for sinusoidal stenotic shape than round and elliptical ones. The effect of stenotic profile on the pressure drop characteristics shows that blood experiences maximum wall shear stress for the sinusoidal stenotic geometry, whereas the pressure drop is the maximum for the elliptical stenotic shape. The elliptical stenotic shape is more prone to further plaque formation than round and sinusoidal stenotic shapes. At lower Womersley number (Wo=2.76) corresponding to 60 beats per min heart beat rate, secondary vortices are formed downstream of the channel, causing higher OSI.

Structural optimisation of H-Rotor wind turbine blade based on one-way Fluid Structure Interaction approach

The paper aims to present structural topology optimisation of the structural topology of the H-Rotor wind turbine combined with the one-way Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) approach. The developed methodology couples the set of Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes Equations (URANS) with the steady state linear elasticity equations and density based topology optimisation method. This approach allowed us to reduce the mass of the blades with respect to the maximum stress and deformation limits. The results obtained provide detailed information on the unsteady flow fields around the operating wind turbine, as well as optimised topology of the blade interior without affecting the external aerodynamic profile. The load of pressure profile from the CFD simulation was implemented at the point of rotation at which the force values observed on the blade surface were the highest. The centrifugal force was considered in the structural model. Computations were carried out for wind speed equal to 30 m/s and rotational velocity equal to 90 rad/s. The turbine operating parameters were chosen to represent extreme operating conditions. The results obtained showed that the blade mass, made of the same material, can be easily reduced by around 60% with the reduction of the observed stress values and deformation.

Forest density is more effective than tree rigidity at reducing the onshore energy flux of tsunamis

Communities around the world are increasingly interested in nature-based solutions to the mitigation of coastal risks by coastal forests, but it remains unclear how much protective benefits vegetation provides, particularly in the limit of highly energetic flows after tsunami impact. The current study, using a three-dimensional incompressible computational fluid dynamics model with a fluid–structure interaction approach, aims to quantify how energy reflection and dissipation vary with different degrees of rigidity and vegetation density of a coastal forest. We represent tree trunks as cylinders and use the elastic modulus of hardwood trees such as pine or oak to characterize the rigidity of these cylinders. The numerical results show that energy reflection increases with rigidity only for a single cylinder. In the presence of multiple cylinders, the difference in energy reflection created by varying rigidity diminishes as the number of cylinders increases. Instead of rigidity, we find that the blockage area created by the presence of multiple tree trunks dominates energy reflection. As tree trunks are deformed by the hydrodynamic forces, they alter the flow field around them, causing turbulent kinetic energy generation in the wake region. As a consequence, trees dissipate flow energy, highlighting coastal forests reducing the onshore energy flux of tsunamis by means of both reflection and dissipation.

Deformation features and failure mechanism of subsea shield tunnels with different burial depths crossing fault-zone

Shield tunneling processes can result in accidents like water inrush and collapse due to instability in the tunnel face. This paper conducts a systematic investigation of the deformation features and failure mechanism of subsea shield tunnels with different burial depths crossing fault zone. The research entails combing theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and data mining with the second subsea tunnel in Jiaozhou Bay, Qingdao. The impact of the shallow and deep burial depths on the damage modes of the shield tunnel face is analyzed from the perspective of the pressure arch effect. When the tunnel burial depth exceeds the limit, the overlying rock of the tunnel will form a pressure arch that supports the overlying rock. The study investigates the impact of various factors on the tunnel face’s failure modes using a fluid-structure interaction approach. Among them, as the thickness of the overlying bearing stratum increased, the displacement of the tunnel face initially decreased but later increased. The increase of cohesion and internal friction angle contributed to decreasing the displacement of the tunnel face, while seawater depth and tunnel diameter exhibited diverse effects. In the grey correlation analysis, the seawater depth exhibited the most sensitive impact on the pressure arch height.

Research on fatigue optimization simulation of polymeric heart valve based on the iterative sub-regional thickened method.

Prosthetic polymeric heart valves (PHVs) have the potential to overcome the inherent material and design limitations of traditional valves in the treatment of valvular heart disease; however, their durability remains limited. Optimal design of the valve structure is necessary to improve their durability. This study aimed to enhance the fatigue resistance of PHVs by improving the stress distribution. Iterative subregional thickening of the leaflets was used, and the mechanical stress distribution and hemodynamics of these polymeric tri-leaflet valves were characterized using a fluid-structure interaction approach. Subregional thickening led to a reduction in stress concentration on the leaflet, with the effective orifice area still meeting ISO 5840-3 and the regurgitant volume achieving a similar value to those in previous studies. The maximum stress in the final iteration was reduced by 28% compared with that of the prototype. The proposed method shows potential for analyzing the stress distribution and hemodynamic performance of subregional thickened valves and can further improve the durability of PHVs.

Wind responses on twin box girder bridge deck using a fluid–structure interaction approach

Wind responses on a twin box girder bridge can be observed by a wind tunnel experiment or by having a full-scale setup if possible. Another possible approach is to go through a numerical approach, which is the CFD simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer surrounding the twin box girder bridge deck. A virtual wind tunnel CFD modelling simulation was carried out on the bridge deck using the Ansys Fluent FSI technique to find out the displacement of the bridge deck. The steady-state simulations were computed. The turbulence model was used to calculate the mean force coefficients as K-ω SST. It has been seen that steady simulation is needed to get the static aerodynamic coefficients right when modelling. Ansys ICEM CFD is used for meshing the bridge deck. In this study, the wind flow behaviour around the structure is analysed at different wind incident angles of − 10°, − 5°, 0°, 5°, and 10°. The pressure variations at different wind directions are mapped in the present work. Responses across and along the wind are also depicted. It was found that the drag coefficient was higher at low angles of attack, whereas the moment and the lift coefficients showed fewer values at large angles.

Sensitivity of TEHL Simulations to the Use of Different Models for the Constitutive Behaviour of Lubricants

This study compares the film thickness, lubricant temperature, and traction curves of two groups of commonly used constitutive models for lubricants in thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) modelling. The first group consists of the Tait equation of state, the Doolittle Newtonian viscosity model, and the Carreau shear thinning model. The second group includes the Dowson equation of state, the Roelands–Houpert Newtonian viscosity model, and the Eyring shear thinning model. The simulations were conducted using a Computational Fluid Dynamic and Fluid-Structure Interaction (CFD-FSI) approach, which employs a homogeneous equilibrium model for the flow simulation along with a linear elastic solver to describe the deformation of the solid materials. The simulations were conducted under a load range of 100 kN/m to 200 kN/m and a slide-to-roll-ratio (SRR) range between 0 and 2 using Squalane lubricant. The results show up to a 10% deviation in central film thickness, a 31% deviation in coefficient of friction (CoF), and a 38% deviation in maximum lubricant temperature when using the different constitutive models. This study highlights the sensitivity of TEHL simulation results to the choice of constitutive models for lubricants and the importance of carefully selecting the appropriate models for specific applications.

Fluid-structure interaction modeling of compliant aortic valves using the lattice Boltzmann CFD and FEM methods.

The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been increasingly used as a stand-alone CFD solver in various biomechanical applications. This study proposes a new fluid-structure interaction (FSI) co-modeling framework for the hemodynamic-structural analysis of compliant aortic valves. Toward that goal, two commercial software packages are integrated using the lattice Boltzmann (LBM) and finite element (FE) methods. The suitability of the LBM-FE hemodynamic FSI is examined in modeling healthy tricuspid and bicuspid aortic valves (TAV and BAV), respectively. In addition, a multi-scale structural approach that has been employed explicitly recognizes the heterogeneous leaflet tissues and differentiates between the collagen fiber network (CFN) embedded within the elastin matrix of the leaflets. The CFN multi-scale tissue model is inspired by monitoring the distribution of the collagen in 15 porcine leaflets. Different simulations have been examined, and structural stresses and resulting hemodynamics are analyzed. We found that LBM-FE FSI approach can produce good predictions for the flow and structural behaviors of TAV and BAV and correlates well with those reported in the literature. The multi-scale heterogeneous CFN tissue structural model enhances our understanding of the mechanical roles of the CFN and the elastin matrix behaviors. The importance of LBM-FE FSI also emerges in its ability to resolve local hemodynamic and structural behaviors. In particular, the diastolic fluctuating velocity phenomenon near the leaflets is explicitly predicted, providing vital information on the flow transient nature. The full closure of the contacting leaflets in BAV is also demonstrated. Accordingly, good structural kinematics and deformations are captured for the entire cardiac cycle.

Design and advanced computational approaches based comprehensive structural parametric investigations of rotary-wing UAV imposed with conventional and hybrid computational composite materials: A validated investigation

This work aims to design a rotary-wing unmanned aerial system (RUAS) that monitors the pollutants and minimizes their concentration in the atmosphere. This RUAS could be well suited for implementation in cities such as New Delhi and Ghaziabad, where air pollution is a major concern. This RUAV’s well-thought-out design and use would be good for the environment also a step forward in the technology of UASs. Therefore, an advanced approach in design as well as innovative computational composite materials development based on structural analysis of this RUAS has been made. The major components involved in this comprehensive investigation are the fuselage, main rotor and tail rotor of RUAS. The aerodynamic parameters on RUAS have been estimated through the advanced technique adopted computational fluid dynamics approach using ANSYS Fluent 17.2. The finite element analysis (FEA) of the RUAS imposed under two different approaches enforced on lightweight composite materials has been estimated through ANSYS Structural 17.2. Firstly, the advanced computational platform for the development of composite materials has been created through the ANSYS Composite Preprocessor tool 17.2, wherein computational moldings of the fuselages of RUAV are framed. The computational moldings are greatly supported and so the conventional polymer matrix composites, metal matrix based composites, and advanced hybrid composites are well prepared. A ll of these uniquely framed materials have undergone computational structural investigations, and the material suitable for RUAVs has thus been selected. The computational tests are validated with advanced experimental outcomes, which furthermore enhanced the reliability of this proposed work. Additionally, the main rotor and entire RUAV are also computationally investigated under aerodynamic loading conditions through fluid structure interaction (FSI) approach. At last, the suitable lightweight material for all the parts of RUAS is shortlisted through innovative integrated computational engineering analyses.

Generic framework for quantifying the influence of the mitral valve on ventricular blood flow.

Blood flow within the left ventricle provides important information regarding cardiac function in health and disease. The mitral valve strongly influences the formation of flow structures and there exist various approaches for the representation of the valve in numerical models of left ventricular blood flow. However, a systematic comparison of the various mitral valve models is missing, making a priori decisions considering the overall model's context of use impossible. Within this study, a benchmark setup to compare the influence of mitral valve modeling strategies on intraventricular flow features was developed. Then, five mitral valve models of increasing complexity: no modeling, static wall, 2D and 3D porous medium with time-dependent porosity, and one-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) were compared with each other. The flow features velocity, kinetic energy, transmitral pressure drop, vortex formation, flow asymmetry as well as computational cost and ease-of-implementation were evaluated. The one-way FSI approach provides the highest level of flow detail, which is accompanied by the highest numerical costs and challenges with the implementation. As an alternative, the porous medium approach with the expansion including time-dependent porosity provides good results with up to 10% deviations in the flow features (except the transmitral pressure drop) in comparison to the FSI model and only a fraction (11%) of numerical costs. However, jet propagation speed is highly underestimated by all alternative approaches to the FSI model. Taken together, our benchmark setup allows a quantitative comparison of various mitral valve modeling approaches and is provided to the scientific community for further testing and expansion.
