Effects of turbulence integral length scales on aerodynamic characteristics and displacement responses of a square prism

This paper investigates the influence of the inflow turbulence integral length scales on the aerodynamic forces on a surface-mounted finite-length square prism and its displacement responses by computational fluid dynamics simulations. Four turbulent inflow conditions with the same mean wind speed and turbulence intensity but different longitudinal and transverse turbulence integral length scales are generated for the simulations. First, the wind pressures and forces on a rigid square prism model and the shear layer characteristics are simulated by large eddy simulations. The simulation results show that the mean characteristics of the wind pressures and shear layers are not sensitive to the turbulence integral length scales. However, the root mean square (RMS) wind pressures on side faces and RMS across-wind forces are increased with the longitudinal turbulence integral length scale, and the mechanism is analyzed by the proper orthogonal decomposition. Second, the displacement responses at the mean wind speed of vortex-induced resonance are computed based on an aeroelastic square prism model by fluid–solid interaction simulations. The RMS displacements of the model are observed to be more sensitive to the transverse turbulence integral length scale rather than the longitudinal turbulence integral length scale. Finally, the influence of the turbulence integral length scales on the Reynolds stresses around the square prism is presented and discussed.

Gaps in the wall of a perivascular space act as valves to produce a directed flow of cerebrospinal fluid: a hoop-stress model.

The flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) along perivascular spaces (PVSs) is an important part of the brain's system for clearing metabolic waste. Astrocyte endfeet bound the PVSs of penetrating arteries, separating them from brain extracellular space. Gaps between astrocyte endfeet might provide a low-resistance pathway for fluid transport across the wall. Recent studies suggest that the astrocyte endfeet function as valves that rectify the CSF flow, producing the net flow observed in pial PVSs by changing the size of the gaps in response to pressure changes. In this study, we quantify this rectification based on three features of the PVSs: the quasi-circular geometry, the deformable endfoot wall, and the pressure oscillation inside. We provide an analytical model, based on the thin-shell hoop-stress approximation, and predict a pumping efficiency of about 0.4, which would contribute significantly to the observed flow. When we add the flow resistance of the extracellular space (ECS) to the model, we find an increased net flow during sleep, due to the known increase in ECS porosity (decreased flow resistance) compared to that in the awake state. We corroborate our analytical model with three-dimensional fluid-solid interaction simulations.

Fluid-solid interaction simulations of an aeroelastic square prism in sinusoidal oscillatory flows

This study numerically investigates the aerodynamic and aeroelastic characteristics of a square prism (aeroelastic model) and wind field around it in sinusoidal oscillatory flows (SOFs). The reliability of the fluid-solid interaction (FSI) simulation is validated by a free vibration test and wind tunnel tests in smooth flow and SOF. The effects of the amplitude and frequency of SOFs are studied at the mean wind speed of vortex-induced resonance. The results show that increasing the amplitude and frequency of SOFs will amplify the root mean square (RMS) along-wind and across-wind base shear forces of the aeroelastic model but decrease the RMS across-wind displacement at the top of the aeroelastic model. The spectral analysis of the base shear forces indicates that the influence of vortex shedding on the across-wind base shear force is reduced by either increasing the amplitude or increasing the frequency of SOFs. The mean and instantaneous wind fields around the aeroelastic model in SOFs and smooth flow are compared, and the wake characteristics of the aeroelastic model in SOFs are analysed by dynamic mode decomposition. It is observed that when the frequency of SOFs is 1.5 times as large as the fundamental natural frequency of the aeroelastic model, the regular vortex shedding process is substantially affected.

Investigation of 3D Printed Underwater Thruster Propellers Using CFD and Structural Simulations

Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) and Autonomous or Remotely Operated Underwater vehicles (AUV, ROV) are developing and spreading rapidly in various industries. A common feature of these vehicles is that they are propelled by small plastic (or metal) propellers in most cases. Additive manufacturing can offer an excellent opportunity for rapid prototyping and the development of new models. This paper aims to investigate the fundamental aspects to be considered in the geometric design and manufacturing of small (diameter less than 100 mm) PLA (Polylactic acid) propellers 3D-printed using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology. In-service deformation of 3D-printed PLA ducted propellers with average geometry was investigated to determine the effect on the thrust and torque on the blades. For this purpose, one-directional FSI (Fluid Solid Interaction) simulations were performed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and structural simulations. The propeller CAD geometries were generated using an in-house MATLAB script. The variable parameters of each version are the thickness, skew, and rake of the propeller blades. For the structural simulations, it was considered that the material properties of PLA parts printed with FFF technology depend on the print orientation. The results of the simulations show that except for extreme geometries (e.g., thin blades, skew, or rake more than 10°), the deformation of small PLA ducted propellers is not significant. CFD studies of the deformed geometries have shown that the resulting deformation has no significant effect on the thrust and torque of the propeller and thruster.

Methodology to capture the single blade loads on a cross-flow tidal turbine flume model

The OPTIDE project aims to improve the efficiency and durability of Hydro-kinetic cross-flow tidal turbines (CFTT). These turbines are attractive for the exploitation of tidal energy, as the area-based power density of such turbine arrays is higher in comparison to those from horizontal-axis turbines. CFTT also generally feature a simpler design and the ability to operate under varying flow conditions. Nevertheless, the efficiency of single CFTT is lower relative to the most commonly used axial turbine type. Furthermore the life time can be affected by alternating and pulsating stresses, caused by continuous variations of the angle of attack and hydraulic loads during the rotation. These stresses may lead to structural damage and fatigue-induced material failures. A promising approach to overcome these drawbacks is intracycle blade pitching. In this case the angle of attack is continuously adjusted individually for each blade during the rotation. The consequence is smoothed peaks of the load alternations and a higher power coefficient CP . The project aims to explore the influence of active blade pitching on CFTTs and to optimize it with numerical and experimental means. Therefore, a lab-scaled three-bladed experimental turbine with embedded pitch actuators is developed. The model will subsequently be tested in the lab flume of the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics of the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. Blade forces in tangential and radial components as well as the machine torque and the rotational speed are measured during the experiments. The turbine is equipped with two full-bridges of strain gauges for the detection of the blade loads, from which the structural stress is calculated subsequently. To ensure the turbine model’s mechanical durability, weakly coupled fluid-solid-interaction (FSI) simulations have been performed and will be presented. To this purpose, a 2D flow analysis, employing the open-source CFD toolkit OpenFOAM (v2206), has been coupled with a 3D structural analysis, using the Mechanical module of the commercial software package Ansys Workbench (2020 R2). The FSI simulations show that the current setup only allows for the measurement of the radial blade load component, because the pitching moment at blade level interferes with the measurements as soon as the profile stalls. The measurements are further distorted by secondary force paths from the loads on the other rotor blades. Possible measures for an improved instrumentation strategy on the flume model will be presented and discussed. It is shown that multiple equipment options allow for a decent investigation of the forces on blade level.

In-silico investigations of haemodynamic parameters for a blunt thoracic aortic injury case

Accounting for 1.5% of thoracic trauma, blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI) is a rare disease with a high mortality rate that nowadays is treated mostly via thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Personalised computational models based on fluid–solid interaction (FSI) principals not only support clinical researchers in studying virtual therapy response, but also are capable of predicting eventual outcomes. The present work studies the variation of key haemodynamic parameters in a clinical case of BTAI after successful TEVAR, using a two-way FSI model. The three-dimensional (3D) patient-specific geometries of the patient were coupled with three-element Windkessel model for both prior and post intervention cases, forcing a correct prediction of blood flow over each section. Results showed significant improvement in velocity and pressure distribution after stenting. High oscillatory, low magnitude shear (HOLMES) regions require careful examination in future follow-ups, since thrombus formation was confirmed in some previously clinically reported cases of BTAI treated with TEVAR. The strength of swirling flows along aorta was also damped after stent deployment. Highlighting the importance of haemodynamic parameters in case-specific therapies. In future studies, compromising motion of aortic wall due to excessive cost of FSI simulations can be considered and should be based on the objectives of studies to achieve a more clinical-friendly patient-specific CFD model

On the Three-dimensionality of Flow in the Neo-sinus and its Implications for Subclinical Leaflet Thrombosis.

Subclinical leaflet thrombosis is a silent phenomenon commonly observed following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Leaflet thrombosis is associated with ischaemic complications and structural valve deterioration. Prior studies have shown that blood stasis in neo-sinus contributes to the initiation and growth of subclinical leaflet thrombosis. This study aimed to quantify temporal and spatial characteristics of the flow field from a fundamental perspective. in vitro experimental analysis and fluid-solid interaction simulations were employed to characterize the flow field of a transcatheter aortic valve (TAV) with an intra-annular design in a pulse duplicator. Blood residence time (BRT) and flow-induced viscous shear stress were measured in the neo-sinus and on the surface of TAV leaflets. Temporal and spatial velocity variations were observed in neo-sinus, indicating that the flow is time-dependent and fully three-dimensional. The degree of blood stasis in the neo-sinus (bulk fluid) and on the surface of the TAV leaflets highly depends on the local flow characteristics. Regional flow variation in the neo-sinus resulted in substantial variations in BRT magnitude in the neo-sinus and on the surface of the TAV leaflet. Areas with a high degree of blood stasis were observed near the fixed boundary edge of the leaflets. The study indicated that leaflet motion is a primary driver of flow in neo-sinus. Considering the substantial variations in BRT magnitude in the neo-sinus (bulk fluid), blood stasis should be quantified locally on the surface of foreign (valve) materials to avoid errors in forecasting the risk of subclinical leaflet thrombosis in patients undergoing TAVI.

Subclinical Leaflet Thrombosis in Supra-annular Transcatheter Aortic Valves: the Role of Leaflet Design.

Subclinical leaflet thrombosis has been increasingly observed in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Intra-annular transcatheter aortic valves (TAVs) have a larger neo-sinus volume than supra-annular devices and are potentially at a higher risk of hypoattenuated leaflet thickening (HALT). However, clinical data from randomized clinical trials have shown that approximately one-third of patients undergoing TAVR with intra- or supra-annular devices develop HALT in 1year. The findings point to the potential role of leaflet design in developing HALT. The study aimed to systematically investigate leaflet kinematics of a supra-annular TAV, Medtronic CoreValve, and determine regions of blood stasis. Fluid-solid interaction simulations demonstrated the limited movement of CoreValve leaflets in the lower belly region that created regions of blood stasis on the surface of the leaflets. The findings provide insights into potential improvements in leaflet design in the next generation of TAVs to reduce the risk of HALT and leaflet immobility.

A numerical investigation of the mechanics of intracranial aneurysms walls: Assessing the influence of tissue hyperelastic laws and heterogeneous properties on the stress and stretch fields

Numerical simulations have been extensively used in the past two decades for the study of intracranial aneurysms (IAs), a dangerous disease that occurs in the arteries that reach the brain and affect overall 3.2% of a population without comorbidity with up to 60% mortality rate, in case of rupture. The majority of those studies, though, assumed a rigid-wall model to simulate the blood flow. However, to also study the mechanics of IAs walls, it is important to assume a fluid-solid interaction (FSI) modeling. Progress towards more reliable FSI simulations is limited because FSI techniques pose severe numerical difficulties, but also due to scarce data on the mechanical behavior and material constants of IA tissue. Additionally, works that have investigated the impact of different wall modeling choices for patient-specific IAs geometries are a few and often with limited conclusions. Thus our present study investigated the effect of different modeling approaches to simulate the motion of an IA. We used three hyperelastic laws — the Yeoh law, the three-parameter Mooney-Rivlin law, and a Fung-like law with a single parameter — and two different ways of modeling the wall thickness and tissue mechanical properties — one assumed that both were uniform while the other accounted for the heterogeneity of the wall by using a “hemodynamics-driven” approach in which both thickness and material constants varied spatially with the cardiac-cycle-averaged hemodynamics. Pulsatile numerical simulations, with patient-specific vascular geometries harboring IAs, were carried out using the one-way fluid-solid interaction solution strategy implemented in solids4foam, an extension of OpenFOAM®, in which the blood flow is solved and applied as the driving force of the wall motion. We found that different wall morphology models yield smaller absolute differences in the mechanical response than different hyperelastic laws. Furthermore, the stretch levels of IAs walls were more sensitive to the hyperelastic and material constants than the stress. These findings could be used to guide modeling decisions on IA simulations, since the computational behavior of each law was different, for example, with the Yeoh law being the fastest to converge.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of a Cooling System for Hybrid Solar Panels Based on Climatic Conditions of Islamabad, Pakistan

The unconvertible portion of incident radiation on solar panels causes an increase in their temperature and a decrease in efficiency due to the negative temperature coefficient of the maximum power. This problem is dealt with through the use of cooling systems to lower the temperature of photovoltaic (PV) panels. However, the developments are focused on the loss of efficiency or extract the heat out of the solar panel, rather than optimizing the solution to produce a net gain in the electric power output. Therefore, this study proposes the analytical model for the cell temperature, irradiance and design of absorbers. Furthermore, the cooling systems for the hybrid solar panels were developed through analytical modeling of the solar cell temperature behavior and heat exchange between the fluid and back surface of the PV module in MATLAB. The design parameters such as mass flow rate, input power, solar cell temperature, velocity, height, number of passes and maximum power output were optimized through a multi-objective, multivariable optimization algorithm to produce a net gain in the electrical power. Three layouts of heat absorbers were considered—i.e., single-pass ducts, multi-pass ducts, and tube-type heat absorbers. Water was selected as a cooling medium in the three layouts. The optimized results were achieved for the multi-pass duct with 31 passes that delivered a maximum power output of 186.713 W at a mass flow rate of 0.14 kg/s. The maximum cell temperature achieved for this configuration was 38.810 °C at a velocity of 0.092 m/s. The results from the analytical modeling were validated through two-way fluid-solid interaction simulations using ANSYS fluent and thermal modules. Analyses revealed that the multi-pass heat absorber reduces the cell temperature with the least input power and lowest fluid mass flow rate to produce the highest power output in the hybrid PV system.

The Effects of the Mechanical Properties of Vascular Grafts and an Anisotropic Hyperelastic Aortic Model on Local Hemodynamics during Modified Blalock-Taussig Shunt Operation, Assessed Using FSI Simulation.

Cardiovascular surgery requires the use of state-of-the-art artificial materials. For example, microporous polytetrafluoroethylene grafts manufactured by Gore-Tex® are used for the treatment of cyanotic heart defects (i.e., modified Blalock–Taussig shunt). Significant mortality during this palliative operation has led surgeons to adopt mathematical models to eliminate complications by performing fluid–solid interaction (FSI) simulations. To proceed with FSI modeling, it is necessary to know either the mechanical properties of the aorta and graft or the rheological properties of blood. The properties of the aorta and blood can be found in the literature, but there are no data about the mechanical properties of Gore-Tex® grafts. Experimental studies were carried out on the mechanical properties vascular grafts adopted for modified pediatric Blalock–Taussig shunts. Parameters of two models (the five-parameter Mooney–Rivlin model and the three-parameter Yeoh model) were determined by uniaxial experimental curve fitting. The obtained data were used for patient-specific FSI modeling of local blood flow in the “aorta-modified Blalock–Taussig shunt–pulmonary artery” system in three different shunt locations: central, right, and left. The anisotropic model of the aortic material showed higher stress values at the peak moment of systole, which may be a key factor determining the strength characteristics of the aorta and pulmonary artery. Additionally, this mechanical parameter is important when installing a central shunt, since it is in the area of the central anastomosis that an increase in stress on the aortic wall is observed. According to computations, the anisotropic model shows smaller values for the displacements of both the aorta and the shunt, which in turn may affect the success of preoperative predictions. Thus, it can be concluded that the anisotropic properties of the aorta play an important role in preoperative modeling.

Precise Fluid-Solid Simulation of Human Left Ventricle along with Aortic Valve during Systole

This paper presents an accurate blood flow model with tissue deformation of the human left ventricle, including the aortic valve. A two-way fluid-solid Interaction (FSI) algorithm is employed to simulate the performance of the human left ventricle during systole. The initial geometry of the left ventricle is extracted from CT scan images of a healthy person. The simulation results produced the systolic anterior motion of the Left Ventricle (LV) identical with the CT scan images at later times during systole. Besides, the numerical results for left ventricular volume change, maximum blood velocity at the aortic valve, and its maximum opening are in good agreement with physiological data. Although no clear image of the aortic valve is apparent in CT images, the FSI simulation predicted the maximum opening of the aortic valve to be 4.38 cm2 which is consistent with physiological observation on a healthy individual. As an application of the above algorithm, a model of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) or septal wall thickening disease is constructed and studied during systole. This simulation provides an understanding of heart performance under HCM conditions. According to the simulation outcomes, the mitral valve approaches the septal wall under HCM due to the change in pressure gradient and the drag force on the mitral valve. This blockage of the LV blood passage by the mitral valve results in stagnation pressure loss and weaker hearth pumping power. Therefore, the maximum opening of the aortic valve, in this case, is 2.28 cm2, which is much lower than the physiological range, indicating the drastic effect of HCM on the performance of the aortic valve and systolic performance.

A comparison of the pulsating and steady jets on flow-induced vibrations and thermal behavior of a sprung cylinder inside an isothermal channel

In this paper, the effect of the pulsating jet from channel walls on the thermal and vibrational behavior of the elastically-mounted cylinder is examined. For the sake of comparison, the efficiency of the steady jet in which the injection velocity is constant has also been taken into account. The primary parameters studied are jet distance, pulsating jet velocity, and frequency. The finite volume method is used to solve flow and energy equations. The dynamic mesh approach is also utilized for the cylinder's motion coupling with a flow field. The results of fluid-solid interaction simulations demonstrate that the pulsating jet acts very successfully in reducing cylinder vibrations, so that at Uj=2, The maximum cylinder displacement magnitude is reduced by 91%, 94%, and 94% for slots 1, 2, and 3, respectively. On the other hand, to reduce the cylinder displacement by the steady jet, the injection velocity must be large enough in which the efficiency decreases significantly as the jet distance increases. The primary reason for the vibration reduction in the steady jet is to suppress the vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder. However, as the jet distance increases, the ability of the steady jet to make changes to vortices decreases, and for this reason, no significant difference in the cylinder displacement magnitude is observed for slot 3. In contrast, the main mechanism for reducing vibrations in a pulsating jet is to change the vortex shedding frequency. Consequently, the cylinder comes out the lock-in region, and the displacement magnitude is reduced independently of jet injection from triple slots.

Fluid-Solid Interaction Simulation Methodology for Coriolis Flowmeter Operation Analysis.

Numerical simulation is a widely used tool for Coriolis flowmeter (CFM) operation analysis. However, there is a lack of experimentally validated methodologies for the CFM simulation. Moreover, there is no consensus on suitable turbulence models and configuration simplifications. The present study intends to address these questions in a framework of a fluid-solid interaction simulation methodology by coupling the finite volume method and finite element method for fluid and solid domains, respectively. The Reynolds stresses (RSM) and eddy viscosity-based turbulence models are explored and compared for CFM simulations. The effects of different configuration simplifications are investigated. It is demonstrated that the RSM model is favorable for the CFM operation simulations. It is also shown that the configuration simplifications should not include the braces neglect or the equivalent flowmeter tube length assumption. The simulation results are validated by earlier experimental data, showing a less than 5% discrepancy. The proposed methodology will increase the confidence in CFM operation simulations and consequently provide the foundation for further studies of flowmeter usage in various fields.

Effect of Material and Population on the Delivery of Nanoparticles to an Atherosclerotic Plaque: A Patient-specific In Silico Study.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the prevalent reason of mortality all around the world. Targeting CAD, specifically atherosclerosis, with controlled delivery of micro and nanoparticles, as drug carriers, is a very proficient approach. In this work, a patient-specific and realistic model of an atherosclerotic plaque in the left anterior descending (LAD) artery was created by image-processing of CT-scan images and implementing a finite-element mesh. Next, a fluid-solid interaction simulation considering the physiological boundary conditions was conducted. By considering the simulated force fields and particle-particle interactions, the correlation between injected particles at each cardiac cycle and the surface density of adhered particles over the atherosclerotic plaque (SDP) were examined. For large particles (800 and 1000 nm) the amount of SDP on the plaque increased significantly when the number of the injected particles became higher. However, by increasing the number of the injected particles, for the larger particles (800 and 1000 nm) the increase in SDP was about 50% greater than that of the smaller ones (400 and 600 nm). Furthermore, for constant number of particles, depending on their size, different trends in SDP were observed. Subsequently, the distribution and adhesion of metal-based nanoparticles including SiO2, Fe3O4, NiO2, silver and gold with different properties were simulated. The injection of metal particles with medium density among the considered particles resulted in the highest SDP. Remarkably, the affinity, the geometrical features, and the biophysical factors involved in the adhesion outweighed the effect of difference in the density of particles on the SDP. Finally, the consideration of the lift force in the simulations significantly reduced the SDP and consistently decreased the particle residence time in the studied domain.

The effect of externally applied rotational oscillations on FIV characteristics of tandem circular cylinders for different spacing ratios

Purpose This study aims to explore an active control strategy for attenuation of in-line and transverse flow-induced vibration (FIV) of two tandem-arranged circular cylinders. Design/methodology/approach The control system is based on the rotary oscillation of cylinders around their axis, which acts according to the lift coefficient feedback signal. The fluid-solid interaction simulations are performed for two velocity ratios (V_r = 5.5 and 7.5), three spacing ratios (L/D = 3.5, 5.5 and 7.5) and three different control cases. Cases 1 and 2, respectively, deal with the effect of rotary oscillation of front and rear cylinders, while Case 3 considers the effect of applied rotary oscillation to both cylinders. Findings The results show that in Case 3, the FIV of both cylinders is perfectly reduced, while in Case 2, only the vibration of rear cylinder is mitigated and no change is observed in the vortex-induced vibration of front cylinder. In Case 1, by rotary oscillation of the front cylinder, depending on the reduced velocity and the spacing ratio values, the transverse oscillation amplitude of the rear cylinder suppresses, remains unchanged and even increases under certain conditions. Hence, at every spacing ratio and reduced velocity, an independent controller system for each cylinder is necessary to guarantee a perfect vibration reduction of front and rear cylinders. Originality/value The current manuscript seeks to deploy a type of active rotary oscillating (ARO) controller to attenuate the FIV of two tandem-arranged cylinders placed on elastic supports. Three different cases are considered so as to understand the interaction of these cylinders regarding the rotary oscillation.

Shear Rate Coat-Hanger Die Using Casson Viscosity Model

Coat-hanger die design aims for optimization of the die geometry of the body and the flow distribution manifold, such that through the exit at the die lip homogeneous distribution of the polymer melt is achieved. This paper proposes a novel methodology for deriving the design equations of the coat-hanger die geometry for some specific extrusion materials and provides fluid–solid interaction simulations for validations. The basis for the calculations is the Casson rheological model, analytic velocity profiles for the pseudoplastic flow through circular pipe and slit, and the constant shear rate coat-hanger die design methodology developed by Winter and Fritz. The geometry obtained was then evaluated using the fluid-structure interaction numerical simulation approach. The sensitivity of the outlet velocity uniformity and die body deformation due to the material and mass flow rate change were investigated using the finite element software, Ansys. It was found that the homogeneity of the outlet velocity is very sensitive to the extrusion materials. The structural analysis of the solid die body also resulted in higher deformations when using some other extrusion materials different from the initial design. Mass flow rate increase only resulted in large zones of stagnation, which occurred around the melt as it passes from the manifold to the slit region. Therefore, it is recommended to define the required range of mass flow rate to prevent the formation of stagnation zones.

Comparative analysis of cycloid pump based on CFD and fluid structure interactions

At present, in the aspect of numerical simulation of cycloid pump, most studies focused on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in analyzing the pump performance under different service conditions (such as speed, temperature, etc.). The characteristics of the pump under FSI (Fluid Solid Interaction) have not been considered yet. By means of the dynamic mesh technique in the rotating domain, the fluid structure coupling interface is set up on a cycloidal pump model building in COMSOL. The simulation results obtained by applying CFD and FSI are improved by experimental verification. The results show that: (1) the average flow rate of FSI simulation is closer to the test results, and the mean values of CFD and FSI pressure are closer to the actual outlet boundary settings; (2) by comparing the velocity and pressure of rotation region of CFD and FSI at different temperatures, it is concluded that the pressure CFD calculated in the region is more than FSI, and the velocity CFD calculated is less than FSI; (3) by comparing the pressure distribution at some contact point of the fluid structure coupling interface, it is concluded that the fluctuation value of the pressure of CFD with time is greater than that of FSI. Through the comparison, it is found that the coupling has a great influence on the calculation results. The FSI analysis of the pump makes the analysis results more real and more conducive to the analysis of the flow field and rotor dynamics characteristics of the pump.

A resolved CFDEM algorithm based on the immersed boundary for the simulation of fluid-solid interaction

In order to study the movement of rigid bodies with arbitrary shapes in the fluid, a resolved CFDEM coupling algorithm is proposed. The proposed method combines the computational fluid dynamics for the fluid and the discrete element method for the rigid bodies. The behavior of the fluid phase is simulated based on the Navier-Stokes equations in the Eulerian framework, whereas the motion of the rigid bodies is governed by the Newton's second law in the Lagrangian description. The major difficulty, namely, the representation of the moving boundaries of the solids, is solved by the immersed boundary method. The interaction forces between the fluid and the solids in different frameworks are derived according to the velocity boundary conditions on the immersed boundary points. Aiming at achieving the strong interaction effects between the fluid and the solids, several iterations are carried out to solve the coupling system.

Analysis of fluid and solid interaction of the flexible bionic wing in ground effect

Animals can obtain excellent locomotion performance as they swim or fly under ground effect in nature. Inspired by this, fluid mechanisms of the flexible bionic wing oscillating and gliding in ground effect are investigated by fluid–solid interaction simulation in this study, respectively. For the oscillation motion, the flexible wing vertically moves up and down at different distances from the ground. Different parameters such as the average height from the ground, oscillation frequency of the flexible bionic wing, and airfoil flexibility are considered in the simulation. At the same time, the gliding motion of the flexible wing in the ground effect is also studied, compared with the oscillation motion. Several simulations are set for different parameters. The characteristics of the force and deformation of the flexible wing and the flow field around the flexible wing are analyzed in depth. The effects of different flexibilities on the force characteristics of oscillation and gliding motion are obtained. The results show that the influence of flexibility on the lift and drag force is different. Optimal motion performance can be achieved within a certain range of flexibility. The ground effect features of the flexible bionic wing with different locomotion modes are acquired.
