DIATOMS AS TRACERS TO LOCALIZE ERRONEOUSLY LABELLED SPECIMENS

In the past it has often occurred that through interchange of labels, use of wrong labels, etc. errors have crept in the herbarium tickets. Some collectors are notorious in this respect. For the use of the taxonomists who make revisions for the Flora Malesiana I have tried to enumerate the collections in which such errors frequently occur (cf. Fl. Mal. 1, p. xvi-xxix) as these erroneous records may lead to grave misconception of the geographical distribution of the species concerned. Other cases may occur incidentally.

The Study of Hepatics in the Malaysian Tropics

Until now hepatics have been studied within the Indomnalayan region by only a few bryologists who could stay there only during a very restricted period. Schiffner visited (from December, 1893, to June, 1894), the western parts of Java and some parts of Sumatra, and brought together a very large collection. The further investigation of this collection had to be postponed. During his stay in Europe, Schiffner published in the Flore de Buitenzorg part of a revision of Marchantiales, Jungermaniales anacrogynae and a part of the Jungermaniales acrogynae (fam. Epigonanthaceae only). Verdoorn's journey to the Indomalayan region lasted from April to September, 1930 (according to Flora Malesiana, vol. 1, Cyclopaedia of collectors). He made an extensive investigation of the bryophytes of many parts of Java (especially of the volcanos) and some regions in N. Sumatra and Malaya. He revised the genus Frullania and the Lejeuneaceae holostipae and organised revisions of special genera (see Annales Bryologici). It is a great pity that these bryological activities came to an end after World War II. In a rather isolated position, Herzog and some of his pupils worked further on Malaysian collections during and after the war. At present the investigations on the Malaysian bryophyte flora are concentrated around the great project of Flora Malesiana (see v. d. Wijk: Flora Malesiana Bulletin no. 8: 264-267. 1951). It is undesirable, however, that only studies in Europe on herbarium-specimens should form the basis for such a flora. THE GENUS TETRACERA (DILLENIACEAE) IN THE EASTERN OLD WORLD

1. An account of the genus Tetracera L. in the eastern Old World (Asia, Malaysia,Australia, New Caledonia) is given. The Malaysian species have already been in cluded in the revision of the Dilleniaceae in Flora malesiana (I 4: 141-149. 1951). 2. The main part of the present paper consists of a key to the species, followed by a systematic treatment of the 15 species admitted for the region. 3. Latin diagnoses are given for three new subspecies under Tetracera asiatiea (Lour.) Hoogl. and two new varieties under Tetracera nordtiana F. Muell. 4. A number of species are reduced either to the rank of variety or to synonymy. 5. Distribution-maps are provided for the species of which a relatively large number of specimens has been studied.
