Affiliation and Autonomy in the Transition to Parenthood

This article examines autonomy and affiliation as potentially clinically significant characteristics for men and women in their adaptation to the transition to parenthood. It is addressed primarily to clinicians who assist individuals and families over the course of developmental transitions, as well as theorists trying to conceptualize such periods in family life. Data were obtained from a longitudinal study of initially expectant couples who were seen a t 2 and 5 years af ter the birth of their firs t child. Autonomy and affiliation assessed during the expectancy were strong predictors of later intrapsychic, marital, and parental adaptation. There was some evidence that women's capacity for closeness, or affiliation, tends to preclude the development of a close relationship between their husbands and their firs tborns.

Virial theorem for inelastic molecular collisions. Atom–rigid rotor scattering

From the hypervirial theorem for a nonchemically reactive but otherwise arbitrary collision between two molecules, the virial theorem for the scattering of an atom by a nonvibrating (rigid rotor) diatomic molecule is derived and shown to be simply related to F. T. Smith’s collision lifetime matrix. It is found that there are two contributions to the collision lifetime: (1) The usual contribution due to the intermolecular potential and its derivative, and (2) a contribution due to the change in the internal energy of the molecule. The conditions under which the virial theorem is satisfied by the infinite order sudden (IOS), distorted wave (DW), and first Born (FB) approximations are also given.

Birth Order and Marital Bliss in Israel

Based on the qualities of the first born and on the research literature, we rank the ,following birth order combinations in terms of successful marriages: (1) first born (FB) husband (h), Later Born (LB) wife (w); (2) LB (h), FB (w); (3) Middle Born (MB) (h) or MB (w) with any other; (4) Only Child (OC) of either sex with FB; (5) FB (h), FB (w); (6) LB (h), LB (w); (7) OC (h), OC (w). 236 women of Tel-Aviv, Israel, completed a questionnaire of adjustment to marital life. While the results closely approximated the rank order, the first three combinations were characterized as high, the fourth as medium, and the last three as low, marital adjustment.
