Finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics to elucidate the mechanism of distal stent graft-induced new entry after frozen elephant trunk technique.

Distal stent graft-induced new entry (dSINE), a new intimal tear at the distal edge of the frozen elephant trunk (FET), is a complication of FET. Preventive measures for dSINE have not yet been established. This study aimed to clarify the mechanisms underlying the development of dSINE by simulating the mechanical environment at the distal edge of the FET. The stress field in the aortic wall after FET deployment was calculated using finite element analysis. Blood flow in the intraluminal space of the aorta and FET models was simulated using computational fluid dynamics. The simulations were conducted with various oversizing rates of FET ranging from 0 to 30% under the condition of FET with elastic recoil. The elastic recoil of the FET, which caused its distal edge to push against the greater curvature of the aorta, induced a concentration of circumferential stress and increased wall shear stress (WSS) at the aorta. Elastic recoil also created a discontinuous notch on the lesser curvature of the aorta, causing flow stagnation. An increase in the oversizing rate of the FET widened the large circumferential stress area on the greater curvature and increases the maximum stress. Conversely, a decrease in the oversizing rate of the FET increased the WSS and widened the area with high WSS. Circumferential stress concentration due to an oversized FET and high WSS due to an undersized FET can cause a dSINE. The selection of smaller-sized FET alone might not prevent dSINE.

Numerical Investigation of Bionic Axial Fan used in Split Air Conditioner

Abstract: Bionic axial fan is the main component in the outdoor unit split type room air-conditioner (AC) which impact the cooling and comfort. The present work aims to improve the aerodynamic performances of bionic axial fan by numerical technique. The detailed simulation has been carried out to investigate the aerodynamic performance of bionic axial fan with various design proposals for a detailed investigation and development of a prospective fan design prior to the manufacture and testing of costly prototypes. According to the biological fact that the serrations at the wing improve the acoustics as well the aerodynamic performances, various design modifications performed on the bionic axial fan blade. As the serrations at the trailing edge help to improve the aerodynamic performance, the fan blade design modified to investigate the change in mass flow rate. The flow field is simulated with the finite element Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver Altair-AcuSolve to analyse the influence of trailing edge serrations on the air flow rate of fan. The three-dimensional (3D) computational domain with SpalartAllmaras (SA) turbulence model is considered to predict the air flow rate. The present computation is carried out for the axial fan speed of 820 rpm. The flow rate is correlated with the test results to validate the CFD modeling approach. The result shows that the trailing edge serrations at the tip of the fan has predicted improvement in flow rate since it alter the length of separation bubble near the trailing edge which also helps to reduce the noise level.

EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT BUILDING DESIGN: INNOVATIONS AND CHALLENGES

This study provides a comprehensive systematic review of innovations in earthquake-resistant building design, focusing on advancements in materials, technologies, and methodologies aimed at enhancing structural resilience. A total of 32 peer-reviewed articles were analyzed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The findings highlight the critical role of advanced materials such as fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) and shape memory alloys (SMAs) in improving seismic performance, particularly through enhanced energy dissipation and structural flexibility. Technological integrations like Building Information Modeling (BIM), artificial intelligence (AI), and structural health monitoring (SHM) systems were identified as transformative tools that optimize design processes, predict structural vulnerabilities, and enable real-time risk management. Advanced simulation techniques, including finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), were shown to significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of seismic design. Despite these innovations, challenges related to cost, regulatory inconsistencies, and limited access to cutting-edge technologies persist, particularly in developing regions. The study concludes that while these advancements have revolutionized earthquake-resistant design, further efforts are needed to address these barriers and promote global resilience to seismic hazards.

Effects of Externally Applied Stress on Multiphase Flow Characteristics in Naturally Fractured Tight Reservoirs

Externally applied stress on the rock matrix plays a crucial role in oil recovery from naturally fractured tight reservoirs, as local variations in pore pressure and in-situ tension are expected. The published literature severely lacks in evaluations of the characteristics of hydrocarbons, displaced by water, in fractured reservoirs under the action of externally applied stress. This study intends to overcome this knowledge gap by resolving complex time- and stress-dependent multiphase flow by employing a coupled Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver. Extensive three-dimensional numerical investigations have been carried out to estimate the effects of externally applied stress on the multiphase flow characteristics at the fracture–matrix interface by adding a viscous loss term to the momentum conservation equations. The well-validated numerical predictions show that as the stress loading increases, the porosity and permeability of the rock matrix and capillary pressure at the fracture–matrix interface decrease. Specifically, matrix porosity decreases by 0.13% and permeability reduces by 1.3% as stress increases 1.5-fold. Additionally, stress loading causes a decrease in fracture permeability by up to 29%. The fracture–matrix interface becomes more water-soaked as the stress loading on the rock matrix increases, and thus, the relative permeability curves shift to the right.

A systematic literature review on the mathematical underpinning of model‐based systems engineering

AbstractThe International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) has initiated a Future of Systems Engineering (FuSE) program that includes a stream for advancing the theoretical foundations of the discipline of Systems Engineering (SE). A near‐term goal of FuSE is to assess the adequacy of current theoretical foundations of SE. The discipline of SE is converging toward model‐based practices (i.e., MBSE) that have not yet reached the maturity of model‐based practices in other engineering domains. For example, finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics are grounded in mathematical theory, while, generally, MBSE is not. However, some attempts have been made to underpin MBSE with theoretical richness. This article presents a systematic literature study that surveyed state of the art on providing MBSE with mathematical foundations. Our protocol collected over 2000 publications that were reviewed for inclusion/exclusion, categorized, and analyzed. We provide insights to the type of mathematical theories used, domains of applications, and areas of SE to which the math was applied to, among other analysis. We also provide a synthesized discussion about the field moving forward, emphasizing positive trends along with the negatives and areas of concern. Overall, we found the field to be nascent.

Double-gap bicone magnetorheology in steady shear under homogeneous magnetic and flow fields

We design, fabricate, and test a double-gap bicone magnetorheological (MR) device to measure steady shear rheological properties of MR fluids under saturating magnetic fields (i.e., large enough to saturate the MR fluids). The device is optimized using finite element method and computational fluid dynamics simulations so that homogeneous, saturating field strengths are reached while keeping a constant shear rate within the main shearing gaps. Experiments demonstrate that the flow curves in the saturation regime can be fitted to a viscoplastic Casson model in good agreement with MR fluids under much lower (nonsaturating) fields. Moreover, yield stress data follow a linear dependence on volume fraction at low particle loadings, in agreement with existing theoretical models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Analytical and Computational Modeling of Relaxation Times for Non-Newtonian Fluids

With the availability of efficient and sophisticated finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, engineering designs are becoming more software-driven and simulation-based. However, the insights relevant to engineering designs tend to be hidden within massive temporal and spatial data produced with full-fledged three-dimensional simulations. In this paper, we present a preliminary study of the controlled intermittent dispensing of a typical non-Newtonian glue employed in the manufacturing of electric vehicles (EVs). The focus of the study is on the scaling issues derived from different computational and analytical models of interest and importance to the precision control of this non-Newtonian fluid, the lowest dynamic viscosity of which at extremely high shear rates is nearly four million times that of water. More specifically, the abrupt change of the inlet pressure with a constant outlet or ambient pressure and various modeling strategies for transient viscous internal flow with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are modeled and compared. The analytical and computational results of the developing Newtonian fluid, i.e., water, are derived and computed for validation and verification purposes before the actual applications to the developing non-Newtonian fluid. The concept of a well-established relaxation time before the onset of the steady solution for Newtonian fluids has been validated with both analytical and computational approaches before its expansion and adoption to non-Newtonian fluids with complex rheological behaviors. Other issues attributed to transient operations and precision controls of non-Newtonian fluid delivery involve the pressure pulse and pressure wave propagation within the flexible pipe with compressible or almost incompressible non-Newtonian fluids with a constant pressure at the outlet and a constant mass flow rate or average axial velocity at the inlet, which will be addressed in a separate paper.

Simplified Models to Assess the Mechanical Performance Parameters of Stents.

Ischemic heart disease remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, which has promoted extensive therapeutic efforts. Stenting has emerged as the primary intervention, particularly among individuals aged 70 years and older. The geometric specifications of stents must align with various mechanical performance criteria outlined by regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Finite element method (FEM) analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) serve as essential tools to assess the mechanical performance parameters of stents. However, the growing complexity of the numerical models presents significant challenges. Herein, we propose a method to determine the mechanical performance parameters of stents using a simplified FEM model comprising solid and shell elements. In addition, a baseline model of a stent is developed and validated with experimental data, considering parameters such as foreshortening, radial recoil, radial recoil index, and radial stiffness of stents. The results of the simplified FEM model agree well with the baseline model, decreasing up to 80% in computational time. This method can be employed to design stents with specific mechanical performance parameters that satisfy the requirements of each patient.

A novel design method based onmulti–objective optimization for graded lattice structure by additive manufacturing

PurposeWhile performance demands in the natural world are varied, graded lattice structures reveal distinctive mechanical properties with tremendous engineering application potential. For biomechanical functions where mechanical qualities are required from supporting under external loading and permeability is crucial which affects bone tissue engineering, the geometric design in lattice structure for bone scaffolds in loading-bearing applications is necessary. However, when tweaking structural traits, these two factors frequently clash. For graded lattice structures, this study aims to develop a design-optimization strategy to attain improved attributes across different domains.Design/methodology/approachTo handle diverse stress states, parametric modeling is used to produce strut-based lattice structures with spatially varied densities. The tailored initial gradients in lattice structure are subject to automatic property evaluation procedure that hinges on finite element method and computational fluid dynamics simulations. The geometric parameters of lattice structures with numerous objectives are then optimized using an iterative optimization process based on a non-dominated genetic algorithm.FindingsThe initial stress-based design of graded lattice structure with spatially variable densities is generated based on the stress conditions. The results from subsequent dual-objective optimization show a series of topologies with gradually improved trade-offs between mechanical properties and permeability.Originality/valueIn this study, a novel structural design-optimization methodology is proposed for mathematically optimizing strut-based graded lattice structures to achieve enhanced performance in multiple domains.

Gradient gyroid Ti6Al4V scaffolds with TiO2 surface modification: Promising approach for large bone defect repair

Large bone defects, particularly those exceeding the critical size, present a clinical challenge due to the limited regenerative capacity of bone tissue. Traditional treatments like autografts and allografts are constrained by donor availability, immune rejection, and mechanical performance. This study aimed to develop an effective solution by designing gradient gyroid scaffolds with titania (TiO2) surface modification for the repair of large segmental bone defects. The scaffolds were engineered to balance mechanical strength with the necessary internal space to promote new bone formation and nutrient exchange. A gradient design of the scaffold was optimized through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to enhance fluid flow and cell adhesion. In vivo studies in rabbits demonstrated that the G@TiO2 scaffold, featuring a gradient structure and TiO2 surface modification, exhibited superior healing capabilities compared to the homogeneous structure and TiO2 surface modification (H@TiO2) and gradient structure (G) scaffolds. At 12 weeks post-operation, in a bone defect representing nearly 30 % of the total length of the radius, the implantation of the G@TiO2 scaffold achieved a 27 % bone volume to tissue volume (BV/TV) ratio, demonstrating excellent osseointegration. The TiO2 surface modification provided photothermal antibacterial effects, enhancing the scaffold's biocompatibility and potential for infection prevention. These findings suggest that the gradient gyroid scaffold with TiO2 surface modification is a promising candidate for treating large segmental bone defects, offering a combination of mechanical strength, bioactivity, and infection resistance.

FEA and CFD analysis and optimization of tube in tube heat exchanger for various cases

This research describes the use of advanced simulation techniques to investigate use of different materials for a tube-in-tube heat exchanger. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are employed to simulate thermal aspects and optimize the heat exchanger design. The objective is to identify the best-Suitable material combination considering both design and thermal considerations. The findings of this research contribute to the development of more efficient heat exchanger designs.

Flow diverters treatment planning of small- and medium-sized intracranial saccular aneurysms on the internal carotid artery via constraint-based virtual deployment.

The internal carotid artery (ICA) is a region with a high incidence for small- and medium-sized saccular aneurysms. However, the treatment relies heavily on the surgeon's experience to achieve optimal outcome. Although the finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics can predict the postoperative outcomes, due to the computational complexity of traditional methods, there is an urgent need for investigating the fast but versatile approaches related to numerical simulations of flow diverters (FDs) deployment coupled with the hemodynamic analysis to determine the treatment plan. We collected the preoperative and postoperative data from 34 patients (29 females, 5 males; mean age 55.74 ± 9.98 years) who were treated with a single flow diverter for small- to medium-sized intracranial saccular aneurysms on the ICA. The constraint-based virtual deployment (CVD) method is proposed to simulate the FDs expanding outward along the vessel centerline while be constrained by the inner wall of the vessel. The results indicate that there were no significant differences in the reduction rates of wall shear stress and aneurysms neck velocity between the FEM and methods. However, the solution time of CVD was greatly reduced by 98%. In the typical location of small- and medium-sized saccular aneurysms, namely the ICA, our virtual FDs deployment simulation effectively balances the computational accuracy and efficiency. Combined with hemodynamics analysis, our method can accurately represent the blood flow changes within the lesion region to assist surgeons in clinical decision-making.

Topology optimization of gyroid structure-based metal hydride reactor for high-performance hydrogen storage

Numerous engineering applications stand to gain substantial advantages by mitigating structural weight. While methods for optimizing continuous solids and discrete frame structures have long been available, the advent of additive manufacturing techniques has ushered in the potential for intricate geometries. In contrast, the hydrogen fuel sector confronts a pivotal challenge: the need to develop efficient hydrogen storage systems. Solid-state compounds like metal hydrides (MH) present a compelling solution among various hydrogen storage technologies thanks to their inherent safety attributes and superior hydrogen volumetric density. Nonetheless, the limitation of MH lies in its gravimetric density, impeding its application in mobility contexts. A transformative strategy addresses this limitation by seamlessly integrating the reactor tank into the vehicle's frame and chassis. This study introduces a pioneering concept—an optimally designed MH container incorporating a gyroid structure. Subsequently, this innovative design underwent rigorous analysis, employing finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics, assessing mechanical properties, heat transfer capabilities, and the efficiency of hydrogen charging into the MH within the structure. Using topology optimization of solid isotropic material with penalization method, a 17 % increase in the chamber volume and a concurrent reduction of the material by nearly 50 %. This profound transformation positively impacted the reactor's volumetric and gravimetric density. Despite a measurable reduction in strength, the optimized structure demonstrated resilience, successfully withstanding prescribed mechanical shear loads. Furthermore, the structure exhibited impressive rigidity, with displacement below 0.2 mm, rendering it suitable and highly competent for integration into assembly components like vehicle frames or chassis. Notably, the optimized structure exhibited a promising enhancement in hydrogen charging rate.

Criss-crossed matching design of the bipolar plate in PEMFC considering unavoidable assembly errors

To tackle performance issues stemming from assembly errors in practical fuel cell applications, a criss-crossed matching design for anode and cathode bipolar plates (BPP) is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed design is assessed by joint simulations of finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Concurrently, the orthogonal experimental method is utilized to investigate the performance of the criss-crossed matching design at various operating conditions. The results show that the GDL deformation rate of the criss-crossed matching design with error in practical assembly is merely 4.8%, significantly lower than the 19.9% observed in the aligned matching design. Furthermore, the criss-crossed design performance could be improved by 5.9% compared to the aligned matching design in practical assembly with error. The criss-crossed matching design consistently outperforms the aligned matching design at various operating conditions. Notably, the highest performance growth rate, observed in high stoichiometric ratio and high humidity, reaches 12.38%.

Research on the Impact of a Fluid Field on an Acoustic Field in Herschel–Quincke Tube

A study concerning the influence of flow on the Herschel–Quincke duct is presented here, which includes the numerical model, the acoustic source and the absorption condition called the Perfectly Matched Layer. For the excitation of a sound field, a normal mode wave is placed at the inlet of the tube. The function of PML is to simulate the infinite tube and avoid the reflection of acoustic wave. To investigate the influence of flow field on sound field, a coupled calculation method combining the finite element method and computational fluid dynamics is used to solve the linearized Euler equation, named the Galbrun equation. Firstly, the influence of the cross-section of the tube on the acoustic field is considered. Secondly, the effects of flow on the acoustic field is also investigated. Lastly, a comparative analysis of the simulation results reveals the influence of flow and other parameters of the tube on sound propagation. Both the Mach number and the cross-section ratio have an influence on the acoustic resonance, and the resonance frequency decreases with the increase in the cross-section ratio.

A Novel Pumping Principle for a Total Artificial Heart.

Total artificial hearts (TAH) serve as a temporary treatment for severe biventricular heart failure. The limited durability and complication rates of current devices hamper long-term cardiac replacement. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of a novel valveless pumping principle for a durable pulsatile TAH (ShuttlePump). The pump features a rotating and linearly shuttling piston within a cylindrical housing with two in- and outlets. With a single moving piston, the ShuttlePump delivers pulsatile flow to both systemic and pulmonary circulation. The pump and actuation system were designed iteratively based on analytical and in silico methods, utilizing finite element methods (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Pump characteristics were evaluated experimentally in a mock circulation loop mimicking the cardiovascular system, while hemocompatibility-related parameters were calculated numerically. Pump characteristics cover the entire required operating range for a TAH, providing 2.5-9 L/min of flow rate against 50-160 mmHg arterial pressures at stroke frequencies of 1.5-5 Hz while balancing left and right atrial pressures. FEM analysis showed mean overall copper losses of 8.84 W, resulting in a local maximum blood temperature rise of <2 K. The CFD results of the normalized index of hemolysis were 3.57 mg/100 L, and 95% of the pump's blood volume was exchanged after 1.42 s. This study indicates the feasibility of a novel pumping system for a TAH with numerical and experimental results substantiating further development of the ShuttlePump.

Challenges in the Virtual Geometry Assurance of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Stacks

Hydrogen-powered fuel cells will play a vital role in the next generation of energy systems. In this regard, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) represent a promising technical solution for all applications where direct electrification is not technically feasible or economically viable, such as the propulsion of heavy vehicles. However, robust production of high-quality fuel cell systems in scalable series production can only be achieved by an early assurance of the product quality considering the numerous variations on geometry element, part, and assembly level. This article presents the challenges and outlines the vision of a geometry assurance process capable of simulating the probabilistic assembly behavior of PEMFC stacks by multi-physics variation simulation, e.g., considering aspects of Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics, under a realistic representation of the part manufacturing and assembly processes and their operation under variations. The findings reveal future research directions fostering the series production of robust, high-quality PEMFC stacks.

A fully coupled model for predicting geomechanical and multiphase flow behaviour in fractured rocks

Geomechanical and multiphase flow characteristics are essential in recovering oil from naturally fractured rocks during hydrocarbon production because of changes in pore pressure and tension within the rock. It is a well-established fact that the geomechanical and multiphase flow characteristics of fractured rocks are interdependent on each other. Evaluation of these characteristics, for hydrocarbons displaced by water in fractured rocks under external stress loading, is severely lacking in published literature. This study aims to develop a novel numerical framework for a fully coupled model of fractured rocks, taking into consideration the pore pressure and porous media discontinuity at the fracture-matrix interface, along with an expanded Darcy's equation. The fully coupled Finite Element Method (FEM) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model developed in this study is shown to accurately predict geomechanical and multiphase flow behaviour at the fracture-matrix interface. The results show that as external stress loading on the fractured rock increases, the porosity and permeability of the rock matrix decrease, capillary pressure at the fracture-matrix interface decreases, and the relative permeability curves shift to the right, indicating a water-soaked fracture-matrix interface. The findings of this study can be used to develop innovative strategies for enhanced oil recovery from fractured rocks.

Enhancing microwave oven performance and transformer quality through efficient high voltage transformer cooling

This paper describes a method and device for effectively cooling a high voltage transformer inside a microwave oven, with the aim of swiftly removing heat generated during operation, hence improving both the microwave oven's and the transformer's performance and quality. The device incorporates corrugated tank surfaces, electrical connection lines with protrusions, and epoxy to prevent cooling oil leakage. The transformer is inserted into a designated tank and sealed to separate the coil and core from the outside environment, allowing for better cooling and protection against electrical shock. Additionally, an oil is injected to absorb heat generated by the high temperature of the core and coil. The effectiveness of this method is validated through the finite element method and computational fluid dynamics techniques. Numerical analysis revealed a significant decrease in the maximum temperature rise of the transformer by around 44.2?C. This finding suggests that transformer oil cooling is a more effective method for controlling temperature rise in microwave ovens compared to traditional cooling methods.
