The characterization of white layers formed on digger teeth

An extensive investigation has been made of the formation of white layers on abrasively worn digger teeth. A wide range of microstructural and microanalytical techniques have been used in association with measurements of microhardness. It has been established that there is no chemical change associated with the white layer; rather that an explanation involves the production of an extremely fine-grained martensite (essentially this is a “thermomechanically transformed white layer”).

1. As a result of the combined shock-wave and laser treatment, fine-grained martensite is formed on the surface layer of the 30KhGSA steel, which cannot be produced by the usual laser quenching. 2. The hardness of the surface layer, its thickness, as well as the strength properties of samples of the 30KhGSA steel increase after shock-wave and laser treatments compared to such properties obtained after the usual laser treatment.
