The researcher relied on statistical analysis procedures and the methods used in answering the imposition of research in order to determine the procedures and methods of statistical analysis according to the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) for each statement in the performance of each variable of performance and the total score of performance. Play and creativity in young children's use of apps

AbstractThis study is the first to systematically investigate the extent to which apps for children aged 0–5 foster play and creativity. There is growing evidence of children's use of tablets, but limited knowledge of the use of apps by children of children of this age. This ESRC‐funded study undertook research that identified how UK children aged from 0 to 5 use apps, and how far the use of apps promotes play and creativity, given the importance of these for learning and development. A survey was conducted with 2000 parents of under 5s in the UK, using a random, stratified sample, and ethnographic case studies of children in six families were undertaken. Over 17 hours of video films of children using apps were analysed. Findings indicate that children of this age are using a variety of apps, some of which are not aimed at their age range. The design features of such apps can lead to the support or inhibition of play and creativity. The study makes an original contribution to the field in that it offers an account of how apps contribute to the play and creativity of children aged five and under.

Analysis of the unique case of ball lightning observation in Mitino, the northwest district of Moscow

Observations of eyewitnesses are the main source of data on ball lightning (BL) properties, but often their descriptions turn out to be incomplete, contradictory and lacking in details. Recently due to the wide use of digital camcorders, still cameras and smart-phones the appearance of a large number of video films enable to study the properties of these objects in more detail. However, even the film caught by the lone observer doesn't allow measuring such the important properties as the dimension of the object and the distance to it. On 27 July 2015 the unique event occurred: BL was simultaneously recorded by three observers located at different points. This allowed us to determine a distance to BL, its diameter (0.75 m) and velocity of its motion at various moments of time. BL movement could be broken into three stages. At first it was approaching to the observers with a velocity of the wind. Then for about 80 s it was moving at a height 40–50 m inside a restricted region with a width 12 m and a length 100 m. At the last stage it rose with a velocity 5.7 m/s to the approaching cloud and flew away with a velocity of the wind 15 m/s. The analysis has shown that such a character of BL motion can be explained if to assume that BL has a positive electric charge (Qbl = 10−3 C) and its attraction to the storm cloud (Qc = 5 C) compensates the wind pressure on BL. Stabilization of BL position at a height 40 m can be explained by variations of electric field intensity above the treetops, by instabilities of wind direction or by BL rotation around a horizontal axis with a linear velocity 0.84 m/s. Evaluations showed that the nearby electricity line did not affect BL motion. The details of BL behavior may serve as an evidence for its material nature.

Nollywood, the adopted name of the Nigerian Film Industry, can be argued, would not have been but for Igbo movie makers and business men and women. This is not a mean contribution to the economic, social and political life of the nation. But how much and to what extent has the industry been utilized by the film makers to uphold the integrity, culture, language and overall image of the Igbo nation? This paper tries to examine how the Igbo movie has been used or not used to rebrand the Igbo ways of life. How it has fared in the hands of the people, the makers and viewers and how it has treated the issues dear to the people, such as culture, language and identity. How far has the Igbo video film been faithful to, projected, or tried to preserve these ways of life of the Igbo people? The movie has become one of the major items on the people’s daily conversation menu and as such, cannot be ignored except by the most backward of people. This is why this paper sets out to examine ways via which the medium can be utilized to appeal more to the people, make their culture more relevant and create avenues for its projection and preservation.

An ergonomics study on wrist posture when using laparoscopic tools in four techniques in minimally invasive surgery

Purpose. With reference to four minimally invasive surgery (MIS) cholecystectomies, the aims were (a) to recognize the factors influencing dominant wrist postures manifested by the surgeon; (b) to detect risk factors involved in maintaining deviated wrist postures; (c) to compare the wrist postures of surgeons while using laparoscopic tools. Methods. Video films were recorded during live surgeries. The films were synchronized with wrist joint angles obtained from wireless electrogoniometers placed on the surgeon's hand. The analysis was conducted for five laparoscopic tools used during all surgical techniques. Results. The most common wrist posture was extension. In the case of one laparoscopic tool, the mean values defining extended wrist posture were distinct in all four surgical techniques. For one type of surgical technique, considered the most beneficial for patients, more extreme postures were noticed regarding all laparoscopic tools. We recognized a new factor, apart from the tool's handle design, that influences extreme and deviated wrist postures. It involves three areas of task specification including the type of action, type of motion patterns and motion dynamism. Conclusions. The outcomes proved that the surgical technique which is best for the patient imposes the greatest strain on the surgeon's wrist.

Women empowerment and domestic violence in selected Nigerian video films

The concept of women empowerment in the society is as vital as the empowerment of their male counterparts. Studies have shown that when people are empowered, they become strong, independent and less vulnerable or susceptible to anybody or group of persons. This study in the film medium is extremely crucial, since it will help in redirecting the minds of the society against domestic violence against the women. This is because it aids the development of the society positively. This study applies textual analysis as a methodological tool to examine how the feminine gender is represented in the popular Nigerian film industry called Nollywood. Among the video-films analyzed are: Michael Jaja’s Thanks for Coming and Gallant Babes. The study applied the purposive sampling technique to arrive at these video-films and observes that the female folks are empowered; there will be less domestic violence, since empowerment brings about freedom, realization, and power to resist and confront enemies. It discovers that domestic violence can be physical, economic, psychological, emotional, etc., thereby having serious negative consequences on the women. Some of the representations on women here revolve around some demeaning attitudes towards the women folks, subjecting them to perpetual ridicule; such as being domestic servants, mischievous prostitutes or others that at best paint a negative picture of the Nigerian woman in the society. Except women are empowered, they will continually experience domestic violence, regular abuses, etc. This research did not deny that instances abound where women are also invested with super-human virtues as in some woman-warrior films, the concern here however to advocate for women empowerment in Nollywood which lead to the eradication of domestic violence. Hence, it argues, that rather than continue to perpetuate old fashioned inhumanity on the women, filmmakers and producers should flow with the tide of presenting women in better light that express their resourcefulness to the society.

Moral Publics: Human Trafficking, Video Films and the Responsibility of the Postcolonial Subject

This article analyzes the ways in which a Nigerian video film about human trafficking is received by Nigerian women who have themselves experienced trafficking in their migration to Italy. This contextualized case study is used as a methodological “lockpick” to open up new lines of enquiry into the relationship that southern Nigerian video films create with their audiences. The essay argues that, by virtue of their specific “addressivity,” the genre of Nigerian video films that focus on female migration and prostitution participates in the creation of moral publics that are concerned with the definition of the postcolonial subject’s responsibility in shaping his/her own destiny.

Sexism, Stereotypes and Production Constraints in the Tanzania Video Film Industry

In the current neo-liberal era, it is pertinent to interrogate the role of the video film industry in transforming societies beyond patriarchal and bourgeois gender stereotypes. The video film industry is popular in Tanzania, and bongo movies appear to focus on socio-cultural and economic issues, which largely pander to stereotypes as defined by patriarchy. In this article, I investigate the claim that “there are no female producers in bongo movies”. The statement invites analysis on gender roles in the film production industry in Tanzania as well as the content of the produced films. Meetings, participant observations and interviews were used to collect data and transformative feminism was employed as a tool for analysis. The analysis forms part of the process to document women’s struggles in various fields of occupation, linking products to means of production. The findings show that there are few female ‘producers’ in bongo movies. Depicted as ‘just actors’, they are substantially influential and have exhibited extensive survival mechanisms in the constrained film production environments in which they operate.

Enhance Video Film using Retnix method

An enhancement technique used to improve the studied video quality. Algorithms like mean and standard deviation are used as a criterion within this paper, and it applied for each video clip that divided into 80 images. The studied filming environment has different light intensity (315, 566, and 644Lux). This different environment gives similar reality to the outdoor filming. The outputs of the suggested algorithm are compared with the results before applying it. This method is applied into two ways: first, it is applied for the full video clip to get the enhanced film; second, it is applied for every individual image to get the enhanced image then compiler them to get the enhanced film. This paper shows that the enhancement technique gives good quality video film depending on a statistical method, and it is recommended to use it in different application.

Introducing the ‘drasofi’: A genre of convenience and context in Zimbabwean film production

Abstract The article introduces a contemporary type of video film production in Zimbabwe combining aesthetic norms of drama, soap opera and film production. The article makes the claim that the emergent genre, dubbed ‘drasofi’ (drama–soapie–film) is one of convenience, influenced by the socio-economic and political context obtaining in contemporary Zimbabwe. Situated within an eclectic film services (Goldsmith and O’Regan 2005) and political economy framework, the article presents exploratory arguments that a film is as good (and as bad) as the context in which it is produced, vis-à-vis, the organizational arrangements, networks and technological infrastructure supporting its production. These film services affect the production value chain and, ultimately, emergent themes. The study derives data from field interviews with Zimbabwe-based filmmakers as well as a critical analysis of two post-2000 films Tanyaradzwa (Gunda Mupengo, 2005) and Sinners? (Tawengwa, 2013). The cinematograhic techniques as well as filmic fact aspects of the video films clearly combine cross-genre services and themes to make distinctly local ‘drasofi’ video films – a hitherto unheard-of classification in Zimbabwean film historiography.

Televisual cinema and social identities: the case of Nollywood and Latin American telenovelas in Eldoret, Kenya

ABSTRACTTelevision in Kenya has in the recent past been dominated by Nollywood video films and Latin American telenovelas. This paper examines the social impact of these televisual cinemas on a community of young women spectators in Eldoret. I develop the argument that the televisual cinema practice not only improved young women's access to cinema but also influenced the process of young women's social identification. The paper is an ethnographic study based on narrative reflections and testimonies by Eldoret-based female audiences. My analytical approach borrows from, but also expands on, Joseph Straubhaar's [2007. World Television: From Global to Local. London: Sage Publications, 32–33] concept of the hybrid and multi-layered identity formations in the context of media consumption. The paper shows that the women's viewing experiences allow them to reflect on their own agency and on their perceptions and experiences of modern young womanhood and the social identifications through which this is framed.

This paper investigates the field of Video image analysis depending on texture for detecting a goal and tracing its movement in a video series. Analysing images depending on texture is better than depending on colour or shape , for the goal sometimes depends on different features . The aim of this study is to propose a method for tracing a goal within a video series after detecting it in each video frame. This study exhibits one of the techniques of extracting the image features depending on the signal frequency through using Gabor filter and in different trends for each frame. Then the histogram is taken for each frame and the frame given the best description for the goal is selected , in which case the threshold is depended . Then it is transformed into the binary form of the video frame ,to decrease time consumed short in detecting the object target . The algorithm is applied to part of the video frame . The location of the object target is determined through calculating the centre for part of the frame and the operation is applied to the series of the frames of the video film . Two films have been adopted as a research sample ,The first is a person„s movement by the traffic lights in al-Nabi Yunus area and the other are the students movement at the university of Mosul in the College of Education.

The ‘diaspora advantage’ of Pauline Chan (1956–): from multicultural filmmaker to cultural broker

ABSTRACTThis is the first academic paper to critically introduce and document the 30-year screen career of Pauline Chan, Australia’s highest profile Chinese film director, television actress and media producer. Sydney-based, Vietnam-born, Hong Kong-educated and US-trained, Chan has directed six films, starred in 14 and produced four television series and films. Despite her prolific career, there has been no sustained research on her profile and repertoire. This paper evaluates the evolution of Chan’s career using the diaspora ‘advantage’ as a new approach. Characterised by mobility rather than culturalism, the term refers to the benefits brought by and skills of diaspora groups that have allowed them to flourish as transnational actors able to leverage resources in both their countries of origin and settlement. It begins by elaborating how Chan’s diaspora advantage has allowed her to challenge welfare multiculturalism and extend aesthetic multiculturalism. It further documents her transition from a multicultural filmmaker to a cultural intermediary by leveraging her diasporic advantage across the film sectors in China and Australia, and opening up new industrial routes outside of the confines of policy. Using interdisciplinary methods to screen biography that include interviews with the filmmaker, film archival research, critical cultural policy studies, and studies in Asian Australian cinema and political economy, this paper argues that the new approach of the diaspora advantage turns the deficit associated with the diaspora into a dividend that has the potential to rethink the imaginary between Asia and Australia.

Gender domination and domestic violence in Nigerian video films: a paradigmatic appraisal

This paper examines the symmetry between domestic violence and gender domination by x-raying some of the issues and challenges that generate domestic violence. Using two video Films produced in the Nigerian Film Industry as case studies, the work argues that gender based violence is not limited to the female gender because, beyond physical demonstration of violence against women, men face psychological violence in the pursuance of their patriarchal ideologies. The study employed the interpretative approach to content analysis within the qualitative research methodology in undertaking a critical analysis of the films. Video Compact Discs (VCDs) and Digital Video Discs (DVDs) and related literatures in film, and feminist theory as well as postulations on domestic violence and Gender domination are used for data analysis. The findings reveal that domestic violence is not limited to the feminine gender. Beyond physical demonstration of violence against women, men also face psychological violence in varied degrees. The investigation reveals that gender domination generates violence among men and women because groups with the intent to dominate and suppress one another in a relationship cause marital crises. A strive towards mutual co-existence is therefore advocated.

National symbols are objects, entities and relics representing an idea, concept, character that may be physical, abstract, religious, cultural, and linguistic among others in a sovereign context and beyond. In the case of Nigeria, the National flag, Anthem, Pledge, Currency, language, Coat of arms, National institutions like the National Assembly complex, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), images of past leaders, historical monuments like the Unknown Soldier (representing military men who died in the cause of protecting the nation), dresses are some of these national symbols. Apart from commemorative historical functions, national symbols are also used to represent hard work, credibility or truthfulness, as well as ethnic differentiation, religious affiliation, cultural background, social status, professional orientation, class distinction among others. Theorizing with Gate-keeping and Framing Analysis, this study adopts a content analysis design which is the study of recorded human communications, an objective and systematic analysis of the contents of any document that are manifest. It is often used to investigate the level of presence of a given content in mass communication. The study selected thirty video films between 2010 and 2015 through a systematic sampling with a random start. Content categories include genre of film, type of symbol, setting of symbol, purpose of symbol, cultural implication of symbol, positioning of symbol, symbiotic relations, prominence, and direction of presentation among others. The study presumed that the nation is replete with communicative, symbolic emblems commemorating historical, cultural, religious, social and family landmarks in nationhood but that these items of symbols are minimally represented in the films that stand as cultural products and identity of the nation in the international community. Findings of the study have dire implications for the critical assessment, representation and image or identity of the nation for the past, present and the future.

Representation about Widow on Mass Media Content

This research looks at the media text side, and aims to describe the symbolic violence of widows displayed in mass media content, especially the content in Film Television (FTV). Starting from such a goal, this study uses semiotics (Roland Barthes) as a guide of thought as well as a technique of text analysis. This study also uses the concepts of representation as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s idea of symbolic violence. The research object are FTV programs in Indonesia, including: FTV Indosiar, FTV MNC TV, FTV TRANSTV, FTV RCTI, FTV GlobalTV, SCTV FTV and FTV TRANS7 are selected purposively. The observation object are FTV programs that still display and represent the existence of symbolic violence toward widows. The results of this research found that television has not create equality and justice gender as yet, proven by the existence of the symbolic violence about widows on FTV show.
