Information concerning thyroid function and disease during pregnancy is briefly but well assembled in this volume. It provides a rather specific approach to diagnosis and management of the more commonly encountered diseases of the thyroid gland. The monograph is divided into three areas. The first concerns thyroid physiology. The chapter on thyroid function tests perhaps should be amplified. The second part deals with clinical problems related to various degrees of thyroid function, including chapters on hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in the mother and the newborn. The third area is a chapter which deals briefly with goiter, thyroiditis, and carcinoma occurring during pregnancy. An omission in this volume is the relatively new field of neuroendocrinology. However, the author discusses some of these relationships and warns against placing patients on low doses of thyroid drugs for treatment of undocumented hypothyroidism.
