Bibliometric Exploration of Ethnomathematics: Trends, Characteristics, and Future Directions

Ethnomathematics plays a very important role in life, especially in mathematics learning. Even so, ethnomathematics is still rarely known to the public. As a result, ethnomathematics research is still rarely carried out. So, ethnomathematics is a good topic to discuss in research. But before that, do an analysis first. So, researchers conducted analytical ethnomathematics research using bibliometrics to explore publication characteristics, find trends, and find future research directions in the field of ethnomathematics. The data used is sourced from the Scopus database. The science mapping steps taken are study design, data collection, data analysis, data visualization, and interpretation. From the analysis, 580 documents were obtained that had been published from 1984 to 2023 with the core of the study being learners, mathematical concepts, learning mathematics and physics. Based on this information, it is clear that ethnomathematics still needs to be explored more deeply, considering that most documents are not articles. As for the characteristics of ethnomathematics research, apart from the lack of material in the form of articles, it turns out that ethnomathematics, which is currently developing, is a learning system in mathematics. Even ethnomathematics can improve high-order thinking skills (HOTS). Apart from that, research on teaching, design, and thinking processes in ethnomathematics is still small but very important. Based on this information, the most suitable novelty for future ethnomathematics research is research on the design of ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning models.

Developing an alternative curriculum for mathematics teaching in a detention faculty adopting an ethnomathematics perspective

In Greece, as more or less all over the world, the curriculum is a matter of central authority and teachers can only apply it in their classrooms, without any connection to the whole curriculum development process. Students’ population in prison schools, and especially young prisoners, often show school denial, poor performance, academic inadequacy, and failure, leading to low self-esteem (Mallett, 2014). Common barriers to participation are lack of motivation —often because of the absence of any means for meaning-making and identity formation in prison— and previous negative education experiences (Liebling, 2011) especially in secondary school when they frequently begin to truant. Working, as teacher, for long time in the secondary school of a youth detention center in Greece, I faced the challenge to reconsider the formal curriculum. Following an ethnomathematics perspective, an alternative curriculum is developing aiming to meet young prisoners’ needs and expectations as a matter of social justice, taking into consideration the need of techniques and strategies that can help to untangle and respond to above structures as part of ongoing research, policy, and practice. The young detainees following the official curriculum applied in the mainstream classes are faced with various problems, such as lack of appropriate schoolbooks, the need to motivate and successfully address educational, psychological and environmental difficulties, and the need for developing a framework for alternative teaching practices and materials based on a multicultural education with the teaching and learning of mathematics, as is the case in the field of ethnomathematics is dictated.

Ethnomathematics Form A Wide Range Of Perspective

Mathematics belongs to its own thinkers, and every thinker has their own culture. So mathematics has an attachment to culture. Ethnomathematics emerged as a link between mathematics and culture. Ethnomathematics continues to evolve and embrace a wider range of studies with a cultural and social center. So the shift in focus towards the ethnomathematical paradigm is inevitable. This study identifies several philosophers' thoughts about the perspective of research results in the field of ethnomathematics. The debating paradigm in culturally based mathematical research. This study aims to describe ethnomathematics from various perspectives; the research method used is literature study. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: There are two paradigms related to the study of ethnomathematics, namely ethnomathematics as a cultural practice and ethnomathematics as a theory to analyze something different. There are various perspectives in ethnomathematical research, (1) there are several perspectives on ethnomathematics as a cultural practice, including ethnomathematics as a mathematicizing activity, the NUC system, mathematical analysis activities, mathematics projects, ethics, and ethnomathematics or mathematics. (2) as a theory, ethnomathematics can be looked at from different points of view, such as the QRS system, analogy mathematical activity, location interpretation, emic, and ethnomathematics and mathematics

Beyond songs and dances: Ethnomathematics and the challenge of culture

In this paper, I discuss the pitfalls of the anthropological notion of culture when used in the field of ethnomathematics, and use Dowling’s myth of reference and myth of emancipation to show how these are linked to what I refer to as the dual dangers – the dangers of decontextualization and knowledge colonization in the field of ethnomathematics. I argue that these two dangers arise from a naïve approach to ethnomathematics research that is informed by the anthropological notion of culture. The paper provides some examples from the Philippines and one from New Zealand on how these dual dangers may manifest while pursuing studies in ethnomathematics and programs for culturally relevant mathematics education.

Educação Infantil e Etnomatemática: Um estudo sobre emergência de racionalidades

O presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar a produtividade de uma situação de aprendizagem intitulada “A Terra como um grão de pimenta”, efetivada com as crianças de quatro e cinco anos de uma escola de Educação Infantil. Embasando-se em um referencial teórico-metodológico no campo da Etnomatemática, o estudo é parte de uma dissertação de Mestrado. Metodologicamente a pesquisa de caráter qualitativa, contou com aproximações etnográficas. Os materiais de pesquisa, analisados por meio da Análise Textual Discursiva, compuseram-se se gravações das aulas e material produzido pelas crianças. Os resultados, permitiram a emergência comparações matemáticas sobre distância, tamanho e proporção dos astros.

FORMAÇÃO DE GRUPOS DE ESTUDOS COM PROFESSORES DOS ANOS INICIAIS DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL NA PERSPECTIVA DA ETNOMATEMÁTICA

A presente pesquisa, desenvolvida na Univates – RS, com apoio da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes), conforme Edital INEP CAPES 049/2012 - tem por objetivo central investigar as implicações pedagógicas advindas das discussões efetivadas em dois grupos de estudos com professores dos Anos Iniciais do Ensino Fundamental, tendo como aporte teórico o campo da etnomatemática. O material de pesquisa foi gerado por meio das discussões, gravadas e posteriormente transcritas, com professores de turmas de 4º e 5º anos de duas escolas públicas da região do Vale do Taquari, RS, bem como suas produções textuais escritas durante a realização de encontros dos dois grupos de estudos formados. A análise do referido material permitiu constituir as seguintes unidades de análise: a) Apego ao Formalismo Matemático por parte dos professores integrantes do grupo de estudo; b) Reconhecimento, paulatino, desses docentes, da existência de jogos de linguagem matemáticos não escolares.

Geometria e educação infantil: um estudo de inspiração etnomatemática

O presente texto aborda um conjunto de resultados advindos de uma prática pedagógica investigativa realizada com crianças do Jardim B (Pré-escola) de uma Escola Municipal Infantil localizada no Rio Grande do Sul. Seu objetivo é problematizar os saberes que emergiram quando as crianças foram postas em contato com tarefas vinculadas às Noções Geométricas Espaciais. De cunho qualitativo e inspirações etnográficas, a investigação tem como referencial teórico-metodológico o campo da Etnomatemática, interessado em examinar questões sociais e culturais no âmbito do ensino. O material de pesquisa foi composto pelo diário de campo da professora/pesquisadora, gravações de vídeo, material produzido pelos estudantes, tais como desenhos, maquetes e construções. A análise efetivada sobre o material de pesquisa evidenciou que as crianças se utilizaram de diferentes estratégias para operar com noções de volume. Tal resultado pode ser produtivo para que saberes gerados nessa faixa etária possam ser problematizados com vistas à qualificação do ensino de Matemática na Educação Básica.

Etnomatemática: Um campo empírico para análise de estudos de um Evento Científico

O presente estudo apresenta uma análise dos trabalhos - publicados nos Anais de 2012 a 2018 do evento Escola de Inverno de Educação Matemática, Encontro Nacional PIBID-Matemática e Encontro Gaúcho de Educação Matemática - relacionados com a Etnomatemática. A pesquisa contou com doze produções durante esse período, selecionadas por meio da palavra Etnomatemática em títulos ou palavras-chave. Dessa forma, é possível inferir que, além de vasto, o campo da Etnomatemática possibilita diferentes abordagens, envolvendo os contextos escolares e não escolares. A análise também permitiu inferir que a totalidade de trabalhos apresentados refere-se diretamente aos pressupostos teórico-metodológicos vinculados às ideias de D’Ambrosio.

Identificação e emergência de aspectos relacionados à cultura advinda da utilização de aparelhos celulares inteligentes

O objetivo do presente artigo consiste em compreender de que forma os alunos de uma turma de nono ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola pública, localizada em um município pertencente à Região do Vale do Taquari, RS, utilizam seus smartphones em atividades não escolares. Os aportes teóricos estão em consonância com campo da Etnomatemática, e seus entrecruzamentos com autores que apregoam a utilização das tecnologias digitais em ambientes escolares. A metodologia de pesquisa é de cunho qualitativo com aproximações etnográficas, utilizando a análise descritiva para interpretação dos resultados emergentes. Dentre os resultados emergentes destacam-se: i) portar um celular ultrapassou as barreiras sociais/econômicas; ii) as funções mais utilizadas pelos alunos são a câmera fotográfica e os aplicativos de redes sociais; iii) os celulares inteligentes têm modificado as formas de relação e comunicação.

Reassembling mathematical practices: a philosophical-anthropological approach

In this paper we first explore how Wittgenstein’s philosophy provides a conceptual tools to discuss the possibility of the simultaneous existence of culturally different mathematical practices. We will argue that Wittgenstein’s later work will be a fruitful framework to serve as a philosophical background to investigate ethnomathematics (Wittgenstein 1973). We will give an overview of Wittgenstein’s later work which is referred to by many researchers in the field of ethnomathematics. The central philosophical investigation concerns Wittgenstein’s shift to abandoning the essentialist concept of language and therefore denying the existence of a universal language. Languages—or ‘language games’ as Wittgenstein calls them—are immersed in a form of life, in a cultural or social formation and are embedded in the totality of communal activities. This gives rise to the idea of rationality as an invention or as a construct that emerges in specific local contexts. In the second part of the paper we introduce, analyse and compare the mathematical aspects of two activities known as string figure-making and sand drawing, to illustrate Wittgenstein’s ideas. Based on an ethnomathematical comparative analysis, we will argue that there is evidence of invariant and distinguishing features of a mathematical rationality, as expressed in both string figure-making and sand drawing practices, from one society to another. Finally, we suggest that a philosophical-anthropological approach to mathematical practices may allow us to better understand the interrelations between mathematics and cultures. Philosophical investigations may help the reflection on the possibility of culturally determined ethnomathematics, while an anthropological approach, using ethnographical methods, may afford new materials for the analysis of ethnomathematics and its links to the cultural context. This combined approach will help us to better characterize mathematical practices in both sociological and epistemological terms.

Possibilidades Filosóficas em Etnomatemática

ResumoEste artigo propõe-se a apresentar os principais resultados de uma pesquisa de mestrado que buscou investigar possibilidades filosóficas em Etnomatemática. A metodologia utilizada teve como base o conceito de cartografia proposto por Deleuze e Guattari, o qual possibilitou percorrer diferentes territórios - Filosofia; Educação Matemática; Matemática; Etnomatemática - e, posteriormente, esboçar prováveis mapas para o campo filosófico da Etnomatemática. Dentro deste contexto observaram-se alguns entrelaçamentos filosóficos que apontam aproximações com os pensamentos do filósofo da suspeita de Nietzsche. Assume-se, com base nas possibilidades filosóficas observadas na pesquisa, que o pensamento nietzschiano se configura como uma potencialidade para fundamentar o campo filosófico da Etnomatemática. É proposta uma reavaliação de algumas verdades deste território, colocando em suspeita certas crenças compartilhadas no campo próprio de produção das pesquisas da Etnomatemática. Este trabalho pretende contribuir, no campo da Educação Matemática, para o debate filosófico em Etnomatemática.

Etnomatemáticas en artesanías de trenzado: un modelo metodológico para investigación

El área temática del Proyecto de Investigación, parte del cual exponemos en este artículo, es Etnomatemáticas. El propósito de investigación es la caracterización y valoración del conocimiento socio-cultural, implícito en la práctica diaria. En el contexto geográfico de Argentina, investigamos la matemática implícita en artesanías de trenzados, elaborando para esto un método propio de análisis etnomatemático. El instrumento metodológico MOMET que se crea para este estudio interpretativo formal de artesanías de trenzado tiene en cuenta dos aspectos: el producto final de la labor artesanal analizado en su complejidad global y el proceso que se lleva a cabo para realizarlo. La herramienta metodológica elaborada está constituida por dos componentes: un Método de análisis etnográfico (MET) y un Modelo de análisis matemático (MOM). El conjunto de los dos nos proporciona el instrumento metodológico MOMET, que permite la Modelización Etnomatemática de las artesanías de trenzado.

Discursos produzidos por colonos do sul do país sobre a matemática e a escola de seu tempo

O artigo apresenta resultados parciais de uma investigação que teve como propósito analisar discursos sobre a escola e a matemática escolar produzidos por um grupo de colonos, descendentes de alemães e evangélico-luteranos que freqüentavam uma escola rural do município de Estrela (RS), quando da efetivação dos decretos que instituíram a Campanha de Nacionalização - uma das medidas do Estado Novo (1937-1945), implementado no Brasil por Getúlio Vargas. A sustentação teórica do estudo encontra-se no campo da etnomatemática - constituído mediante os entrecruzamentos das teorizações pós-estruturalistas, em especial o pensamento de Michel Foucault, e das idéias formuladas por Ludwig Wittgenstein em sua obra Investigações filosóficas. O material de pesquisa examinado no artigo consiste em narrativas produzidas por sete colonos que estudaram naquela escola no período enfocado e em um texto elaborado por um dos participantes da pesquisa. O exercício analítico realizado mostrou que: a matemática escolar praticada naquela instituição foi sendo constituída como um conjunto de jogos de linguagem marcados pela escrita e pelo formalismo; as matemáticas geradas nas atividades cotidianas dos participantes do estudo podem ser significadas como conformando jogos de linguagem regidos por outra gramática, que utilizava regras como a oralidade, a decomposição, a estimativa e o arredondamento, constituindo critérios de racionalidade diferentes daqueles presentes nos jogos que engendravam a matemática escolar.

“A vida deles é uma matemática”: regimes de verdade sobre a educação matemática de adultos do campo

This paper presents some results of a research project whose main goal was to analyze regimes of truth about adult peasant’s mathematics education. Its theoretical support was a post-structuralist perspective – based on Michel Foucault’s thought – and the field of Ethnomathematics. The research data analyzed in the paper is composed by a set of narratives about mathematics education produced by peasant educators living in the south of Brazil. These narratives were obtained through interviews done by students of a Teacher Education Course belonging to the social movement “Articulacao por uma educacao do campo”. The data analysis showed that the educators identify practices of measuring, counting, localizing, etc. as part of their culture, addressing its meaning to the school mathematics in which they were socialized. Its analysis also suggested that there is a sort of suppression of those marks that institute the peasant’s ethnomathematics, leading to the idea that the interviewees were captured by the “power of the Western rationality” (Walkerdine, 1995). Ethnomathematics and political struggles

The paper analyzes and discusses a research study in an ethnomathematics approach, which was developed in a Movimento Sem-Terra (Landless People Movement) settlement in Brazil. The research study is organized as a pedagogical project with peasants, students, teachers and technicians experiencing the construction of an educational process in which local and more global knowledge interacts and where native and technical knowledge are confronted and incorporated. The project allowed the production of a double movement of making community life penetrate the school at the same time as knowledge produced during the pedagogical process pours out from the school space. The approach used in the pedagogical work developed in the Itapui settlement focused on problems of practical and material needs. They were not transmuted into symbolic control problems, indicating other possibilities in the field of ethnomathematics, especially in mathematics education which is carried out with social movements such as the Landless People Movement. Based on her research, the author emphasizes that ethnomathematics finds its most relevant expression when it exposes its social engagement, when it does not treat cultural questions as exotic and unrooted elements, with no commitment to political struggles widespread throughout the world.

The Warlpiri recognize the components and rules of their and they recognize its modeling functions. What they d on't seem to have is a theory of iconography that abstracts general patterns from the sand scenes, yawalyu, and guru wari. Here we may question whether or not the is mathematics. Perhaps we are safer to say, as Marcia Ascher has suggested, that the Warlpi ri be called mathematical ideas rather tha n ma thematics. I prefer to leave the question open at this time. Obv ious ly, that we can model the with mathematics does not imply that the is mathemat ics, but neither does it imply that it isn't. The quandary may be resolved by researchers working in the field of ethnomathematics.
