Conflicting perceptions of the well-organised environment

The paper presents a cross-disciplinary investigation into the intricate state of human-environment interaction. Drawing from the field of environmental psychology, it is an inquiry of the attitudes and perceptions of the human’s surrounding private and public environment, and presumably conflicting understanding, perception and individual interpretation of what well-organised and orderly environment means. It is very common to see the concept of a well-ordered environment in widespread public discourse. Depending on the context, a term encompasses various factors, such as physical, social, educational, and mental domains and can be applied not only to spatial environments but also to business and entrepreneurial, school and workplace environments, and more. Beyond creating an up-to-date understanding of the concept and understanding of orderly environment in the Latvian context, the paper aims to clarify whether there are limitations posed by conflicting understandings of the notion and set objectives, organisation of the environment, quality of life and personal and community growth. The research approach is based on the investigation through society involvement. The online questionnaire was employed to gather original and qualitative data to analyse the set topic. Additionally, the study of relevant scientific publications, bibliography and visual observations was used. The obtained results shows that conflicting opinions and perceptions exist, and they pose challenges to spatial development and quality of life. The paper contributes to the current understanding of the collectively formed environment among Latvia’s population. It can be applied to explain limitations and social colissions in spatial developments, as well as during discussions of environmental maintenance, architecture and urban quality, and overall condition of surroundings among various stakeholders.

Thoughtful paths of Nature Park „Ogres Zilie kalni”

In many countries around the world, urbanization has led to a disconnection from nature within major cities and this has prompted increased research into the significance of nature in the daily lives of urban residents. In the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, people began to visit the walking trails en masse and the habit has continued even after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study, which was conducted in July of 2023 is a part of a broader research initiative aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities and optimizing the physical and wellness benefits provided by walking paths. The research is centered on the "Ogres Zilie kalni" nature park, which features recreational and activity trails. For a majority of residents, these walking paths and ski tracks are vital for recreation. The research's objective is to outline the planning principles for the nature park's trail network, drawing not only from landscape architecture but also from the field of environmental psychology. This holistic approach is expected to yield better recreational outcomes and subsequently improve human health. The primary goal of this study is to investigate how different types of nature walking trails impact human attention dynamics. Using Schulte's Tables, a psychological method, the study assessed how various stimuli in trail planning and route selection influence human attention. The research results do not offer a definitive answer regarding the influence of path type on attention dynamics. However, the findings indicate that attention dynamics tend to improve after the second or third measurement, typically occurring at 20-30 minute intervals. This aligns with the theory that 20 minutes is sufficient for attention reset. Attention dynamics then diminish towards the end of the walk due to physical exhaustion. It was hypothesized that adequate rest could lead to improved dynamics. In the modelling of the walking path network and route selection, cognitive factors such as the purpose of the walk, group participation, individual walks, social interactions, and the perception of the three-dimensional spatial environment serve as the foundation for designing the layout of walking paths. The study raises intriguing and complex research questions, further complicated by the diverse groups involved, including students, families, and the elderly. Social factors play a pivotal role in determining the optimal path for both fundamental research and practical applications. Understanding the mechanisms and information sources guiding decision-making in path selection should encompass not only psychological but also social aspects. This comprehensive approach will contribute to a better understanding of path planning for psychological wellness and the cultivation of emotionally positive behavioural patterns.

Enhancing waste classification behavior: A psychological perspective

In our rapidly evolving world, propelled by technological advancements and societal progress, the pace of life has accelerated significantly. However, this relentless pursuit of speed has also given birth to pressing ecological challenges, with waste accumulation being a conspicuous concern. Despite concerted efforts to promote waste classification practices through policies and initiatives, the adoption of such behavior remains disappointingly limited. Consequently, the exploration of waste classification behavior has garnered attention in the field of environmental psychology. This paper synthesizes years of domestic and international research to comprehensively review the current state, definition, influencing factors, and potential benefits of waste classification behavior. By adopting a multidimensional approach, it aims to unveil the role of psychology in shaping such behavior, while also addressing the persisting ecological dilemmas that continue to confound contemporary efforts.

The Role of Social Norms and Personal Costs on Pro-Environmental Behavior: The Mediating Role of Personal Norms.

Pro-environmental behavior necessitates individuals to make personal sacrifices, such as spending more money on environmentally-friendly products to benefit the environment. Realistically, individuals may not be willing to engage in pro-environmental behavior based self-interest. The increase in personal pro-environmental behavior has become an urgent issue in the field of environmental psychology. The present study adopted green consumption paradigm to explore the internal mechanisms of pro-environmental behavior at different personal costs, the role of social and personal norms on pro-environmental behavior, which can promote individual pro-environmental behavior. In our experiment, participants first were instructed to read texts unrelated and related to social norms in sequence. Participants subsequently completed the product choice task, which involved making choices between buying green (eco-friendly) products or cheaper (self-interested) common products, a method to measure pro-environment behavior. Finally, the participants completed the personal norms scale and social norms check. The findings of present study indicated that pro-environmental behavior decreased as personal costs increased. However, social norms effectively promoted individuals' pro-environmental behavior, and personal norms played a mediating role at high personal costs. Our findings indicate that individuals tend to choose cheaper common products that are harmful to the natural environment in self-interest. However, we discuss the implications for the use of social norms as a social marketing technique, which extends the Norm Activation Model.

전시컨벤션센터가 지역주민의 장소애착심과 공동체의식에 미치는 영향 연구 - 킨텍스(KINTEX)를 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to investigate the significant effects of local residents' place attachment and sense of community subject to exhibition and convention centers, with the focus on the relationship between the convention and exhibition center and the local residents, which is the foundation of its industry. In addition, this study is to find out the place meaning of the convention and exhibition center and to suggest that there is a strong connection between local residents and local community. With this point of view, the theory and measurement scale of the place affection which has been actively studied in the field of environmental psychology was applied to the convention and exhibition field. The place meaning in the convention and exhibition center was analyzed, and in addition, the relationship between sense of community was identified and the direction of the role of the convention and exhibition center to the local residents and community is proposed. This study used a total of 289 valid samples of surveys responded by the local residents over 20 years of old and above, living in west-Ilsan and east-Ilsan centering ‘KINTEX’ which is located in Goyang city in Gyeonggi province. As a result of structural equation model analysis using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 22.0 programs, the factors such as place identity and place dependence from the place attachment has shown a significant impact on the effects of economic, social and cultural influences on the convention and exhibition center. On the other hand, the relationship between tourism influence factor and place attachment impact was not significant. As a result of analyzing the effect of place attachment on sense of community, both place identity and place dependence were all significant in sense of community. These results can be used as basic data to analyze the perception of local residents in the operation of the convention and exhibition center. Also, it is expected that the convention and exhibition center will continue to develop and serve as a medium to build a stable image and a differentiated characteristic of a location.

STUDY ON THE EVALUATION STRUCTURE OF PUBLICLY USED SPACE

The evaluation grid method has long been applied as an important interview method in the field of environmental psychology, but this sometimes poses some problems when applying it to the different objective environments from the original paper. One is about the limitation of characteristics of objectives environments and another one is about how to handle individual differences. This study aims to discuss these two problems by comparing evaluation structures with multi-usage scenarios.

Flow Experiences in Shopping Activities: Testing Materialistic Goal Orientation as an Antecedent.

Given that flow experiences when shopping can encourage positive brand attitudes and purchase behaviours, consumer psychologists are interested in the antecedents to flow within retail environments. Emerging findings suggest that a materialistic goal orientation can undermine an individual's tendency to have optimal experiences of flow. However, this existing work has been conducted largely within the field of Environmental Psychology and thus focused on flow experiences that occur in more ecologically sustainable activities. We hypothesized that materialism may not have the same flow-limiting effects when participants are engaged in shopping activities, which are more in line with the goals of highly materialistic individuals. Across two studies, we tested the relationship between materialism and the experience of flow during shopping activities using cross-sectional (N = 886) and experimental (N = 140) methods. Contrary to our hypothesis, both studies documented a negative effect of materialism on flow experiences when shopping, and this was not moderated by the type of store browsed. Accordingly, it appears that a materialistic goal orientation limits the extent to which people can have enjoyable flow experiences even during activities which are consistent with the life goals of highly materialistic individuals. We discuss the implications of these findings for wellbeing, marketing, and sustainability.

СТРУКТУРА КОРРЕЛЯЦИОННЫХ СВЯЗЕЙ ПОКАЗАТЕЛЯ АКТИВНОСТИ С ДРУГИМИ ПОКАЗАТЕЛЯМИ У СОВРЕМЕННЫХ ПОДРОСТКОВ

Statement of the problem and purpose of the article. Currently, the implementation of the infrastructure modernization program in modern schools and the construction of new school buildings1 is actively underway, where the design takes into consideration the quality criteria of the physical space of the educational environment2. Methods are used to involve all participants of the educational process in the joint modeling of the design concept of the educational environment, which, in turn, creates conditions for changing outdated norms and rules in the educational system [Levan, Yakshina, 2020]. Training is organized under the program “Personality potential development”, where attention is also paid to the subject-spatial component of the educational environment3. However, in our opinion, insufficient attention is paid to understanding of psychological and pedagogical features of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment, which can contribute to achieving the planned learning outcomes4, including the development of the subjective activity of a modern teenager. The system of principles of ecological and pedagogical design is based on the theory of possibilities [Gibson, 1988], according to which the possibility contains two interrelated aspects – stimuli coming from the environment and the activity of the individual itself directed “towards” these stimuli [Yasvin, 2020]. This confirms the relevance of our research: to understand with the help of which psychological and pedagogical features of the space and object component of the educational environment we can stimulate the development of students’ activity. In the previous publications [Parfenova, Safonova, 2021, 2022], we have already considered individual components of activity, but they manifest themselves in an interconnected way in the development of a personality, and one of the stages of our research was a correlation analysis to establish relationships between the components of activity and their indicators. This article presents the most significant interrelations of activity and other psychological characteristics of modern adolescents. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study were the following approaches: activity-based (V.V. Davydov, M.M. Makhmutov, etc.); personality-activity-based (V.P. Zinchenko, V.A. Slastenin), systemic (B.F. Lomov, V.A. Hansen), environmental (J. Gibson), integrative approach (A.A. Volochkov), as well as the theory of personality activity (S.L. Rubinstein, L.S. Vygotsky, B.F. Lomov, K.A. Abulkhanova-Slavskaya), research in the field of environmental psychology (M. Chernoushek, K. Levin, V.A. Yasvin), concept of psychological safety of an educational environment (I.A. Bayeva). The study involved 149 students of 6th-8th grades from Secondary School No. 157 in Krasnoyarsk, 84 girls and 65 boys (6th grade – 29 girls, 20 boys; 7th grade – 22 girls, 25 boys; 8th grade – 33 girls, 20 boys). Specific psychodiagnostic research methods were used: the questionnaire “Well-being. Activity. Mood” by V.A. Doskina, N.A. Lavrentieva, V.B. Sharaya and M.P. Miroshnikova; methods of studying the locus of control by J. Rotter; test questionnaire “Motivation of success and motivation of fear of failure” by A.A. Rean; the methodology of “Action control scale” by Yu. Kul; the questionnaire “Assessment of the level of claims” by V.K. Gerbachevsky; the methodology for diagnosing the components of socially-oriented activity by R.M. Shamionov; the methodology for diagnosing the components of subjective adaptability “Readiness for action and evaluation of the implementation of action” by L.M. Kolpakova. Spearman’s correlation analysis was used as a statistical method. The calculation was carried out using the statistical package SPSS 17.0. Research results. Correlation analysis showed that it is important for the sixth graders to fit themselves into society, find a balance between their desires and external requirements, and achieve acceptance from others. The seventh graders get more correlations between activity and a focus on success and between activity and an assessment of their potential. It is important for them to decide which activity to engage in to save their self-image. For the eighth graders to be active, it is important to have formed self-confidence, since there comes a period of making the first independent choice, which has clear consequences in the future when choosing a field of professional interests. Conclusion. The obtained data will form the basis of a model of psychological and pedagogical features of the object-and-space component of the educational environment, which contributes to the development of students’ activity.

Transmission of environmentally responsible behavior between tourist destination employees and tourists: The role of moral elevation and environmental knowledge.

Tourists' environmental misconduct is the primary reason for the environmental destruction that tourist sites experience; nevertheless, their environmentally responsible behavior is also a major push for the improvement of the environment. The main goal of this study is to induce tourists to adopt proactive environmental responsibility behaviors. A total of 455 valid questionnaires were obtained from China and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings of this study indicate employees' environmentally responsible behavior (E-ERB) in tourist destinations has a positive impact on tourists' environmentally responsible behavior (T-ERB). In the mediating variable of moral elevation, the correlation between E-ERB and T-ERB is mediated by elevating emotions and views of humanity. And desire to be a better person did not play a mediating role in the relationship between E-ERB and T-ERB. Additionally, environmental knowledge moderates the transmission path of the impact of E-ERB and T-ERB via elevating emotions. With high environmental knowledge, the transmission path of the impact of employees' environmentally responsible behavior of the tourist destination on tourists' environmentally responsible behavior via elevating emotions will be enhanced. We propose a new perspective to explain the transmission mechanism between employees' environmentally responsible behavior and tourists' environmentally responsible behavior in tourism destinations, which will help to expand our understanding of the relationship between employees' behavior and tourists' behavior. We expect our study to spark more exploration of the contagion of positive behavior in the field of environmental psychology.

ПРОЕКТИРОВАНИЕ ПРЕДМЕТНО-ПРОСТРАНСТВЕННОГО КОМПОНЕНТА ОБРАЗОВАТЕЛЬНОЙ СРЕДЫ С УЧЕТОМ ВОЗРАСТНЫХ ОСОБЕННОСТЕЙ ОБУЧАЮЩИХСЯ

Statement of the problem. The article discusses the relevance of the transformation of the subject-spatial component in the educational institutions of the country. Within the framework of the national project “Education”, there is an active construction of new educational buildings, reconstruction, structural and visible repair. Taking into account the international experience of architectural and planning solutions, when creating or renovating the subject-spatial component of the educational environment, the criteria of safety, openness, accessibility, multifunctionality, etc. are applied. The connection of the subject-spatial component with the social and organizational-technological components of the educational environment is also taken into account, which allows modeling a new educational environment using approaches of international practice of description [Formation of a modern educational environment, 2019]. To achieve a high-quality result, teams of specialists from different fields of activity are formed, using the technology of collaborative design, where even before the stage of development of the environment design project, the concept of the development of an educational institution (new or modernized) is taken into account. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the application of the technology of participatory design with schoolchildren for the transformation of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment, taking into account the age characteristics of students and the concept of the development of an educational institution (organization). The theoretical and methodological basis of the study includes activity-based (V.V. Davydov, M.M. Makhmutov, etc.), personal-activity-based (V.P. Zinchenko, V.A. Slastenin), systemic (B.F. Lomov, V.A. Hansen), ecological (J. Gibson), integrative (A.A. Volochkov) approaches, as well as theory of personality activity (S.L. Rubinstein, L.S. Vygotsky, B.F. Lomov, K.A. Abulkhanova-Slavskaya), research in the field of environmental psychology (M. Chernoushek, K. Levin, J. Gibson, V.A. Yasvin). All in all, 155 students of grades 6–8 of the MAOU “Secondary school No. 157” of Krasnoyarsk took part in the study. The following samples were formed for the study: all respondents studying separately in grades 6, 7, 8. An ascertaining experiment was conducted with the use of a diagnostic complex to identify the characteristics of the activity of students [Parfenova, Safonova, 2022]. During the implementation of the formative experiment on the creation of a subject-spatial component of the educational environment, open observation was conducted in natural conditions and the method of focus groups with students was used, during which the needs for additional project activities using the technology of participatory design were identified. Research results. The study confirmed the importance of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment for students. In the semantic universality of the stimulus “school”, the weight of the category “subject-spatial environment” is more than twice the weight of the categories “Psychological atmosphere”, “Educational process” and almost four times the weight of the category “Teacher”. The results of studying the activity of students showed that the conditions in the educational environment limit the manifestations of activity or do not contribute to the emergence of the need for activity. The model of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment proposed by us promotes the development of students’ activity and is not limited to the walls of the school, classroom or adjacent territory within its borders. During the formative experiment, the need for independent participation in the transformation of the environment in adolescents aged 13–15 years was identified, for which we applied the technology of participatory design. Conclusion. Transformation of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment is the possibility of synthesis of the educational process, transformation of the environment, self-determination of students. Having identified the age range in which it is important for students not just to come to school as a place, but to realize the need for its transformation, we can conclude that the proposed model of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment, created on the basis of participatory design, contributes to the development of the activity of personality, subjectivity, and individuality of students.

Statement of the problem. The article fixes the relevance of the problem of student activity, since any human manifestations are associated with the phenomenon of activity, emphasizes the importance of studying the nature of activity, the mechanisms of its development and manifestation in order to determine possible ways of its purposeful formation. The purpose of the article is to analyze the results of the study of various manifestations of the activity of the personality of adolescents and to discuss the possibilities of the subject-spatial environment of educational institutions as a means of contributing to the formation of the activity of the personality of a modern schoolchild. The theoretical and methodological basis of the research includes activity-based (V.V. Davydov, M.M. Makhmutov, etc.); personality-activity-based (V.P. Zinchenko, V.A. Slastenin), systemic (B.F. Lomov, V.A. Hansen), ecological (J. Gibson), integrative (A.A. Volochkov) approaches, as well as the theory of personality activity (S.L. Rubinstein, L.S. Vygotsky, B.F. Lomov, K.A. Abulkhanova-Slavskaya), research in the field of environmental psychology (M.Chernoushek, K. Levin, J. Gibson, V.A. Yasvin). 155 students of grades 6–8 of MBOU “Secondary school No. 157” of Krasnoyarsk took part in the study. To analyze the results, the following samples were formed: all respondents studying separately in grades 6, 7, 8. The methods of WAM (well-being, activity, mood) developed by V.A. Doskin, N.A. Lavrentieva, V.B. Sharai and M.P. Miroshnikov were used; the method of diagnosing the components of socially-oriented activity by R.M. Shamionov; the method of diagnosing the components of subjective adaptivity “Readiness for action and evaluation of the implementation of action” by L.M. Kolpakova, S.V. Khusainova. Observation was also used as a research method. When processing the results, methods of average analysis, ranking, and qualitative analysis were used. Research results. According to the study of social activity, adolescents are motivated to be with others and be active in interaction and communication, but they have insufficient indicative basis for its implementation, they do not see opportunities for activity, which is accompanied by negative experiences and is expressed in low overall activity. Teenagers rarely initiate any actions, offer solutions, in order for the activity to manifest itself, efforts on the part of a teacher, mentor are required. That is, we can talk about reactivity in response to the demands of the school environment, rather than about our own activity. Teenagers find it difficult to choose such forms of their actions and behavior that would allow them to harmonize their own interests and the interests of others, rely on internal meanings and beliefs and combine them with the requirements of the society. Internal contradictions lead to emotional tension, negative experiences and rejection of activity as a defensive strategy to avoid failure. After passing through the physiological storm in the acute puberty period, from the point of view of the functional state, adolescents are ready to be active, but psychologically the realization of different types of activity is hindered by the difficulty in finding their own ways of its manifestation, consistent with the requirements of the social environment, as well as conditions in the educational environment that limit the manifestations of activity or do not contribute to the emergence of the need for activity. Conclusion. In adolescence, we can talk about the presence of a certain readiness of adolescents to be proactive in the educational environment, but unwillingness, inability to show it. In many ways, this may be due to environmental factors that set a certain well-being, mood, readiness for active actions. As one of the means of developing the activity of adolescents, we offer a co-participating design of the subject-spatial component of the educational environment.

Residents’ acceptance towards car-free street experiments: Focus on perceived quality of life and neighborhood attachment

While the twentieth century was dominated by private car usage, shifts towards more sustainable urban mobility, to mitigate environmental damage and increase health benefits, are now taking place. In Scandinavia, several car-free street experiments take form, that span from permanent car-free inner-city plans (i.e. Oslo) to temporary interventions (i.e. pop-up plaza and parklets) to shift the use of urban settings and infrastructures from motorised traffic towards spaces for people and social interactions. Specifically, in Sweden, transitory car-free street experiments (i.e. summer streets) are developed with the purpose of creating novel mobility patterns and uses of public spaces that enhance social inclusion and quality of life. Despite Swedish municipalities’ monitoring of these interventions, very little is known about whichphysical parameters (i.e. environmental qualities) and psychosocial processes (i.e. emotional relation with places) affect people’s acceptance and placeusability during car-free initiatives. Following the guidelines proposed by the European Commission, this paper focuses on residents’ perception of car-free street experiments. The aim is to identify howacceptance andusabilityof car-free street experiments might vary depending on the perceived qualities of the physical urban settings and on interceding psychosocial processes such as, neighborhood attachment and perceived quality of life. An interdisciplinary methodology of investigation merging knowledge from the field ofenvironmental psychology, landscape architecture, urban transport and planning wasapplied on four case studies in Sweden.Results suggest that psychosocial processes of place attachment and quality of life are relevant in order to understand the level of acceptance towards car-free streets implementations.

Socio-Psychological and Design Features Related to Transport Choices: A Focus Group Research in the Metropolitan Area of Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy).

Due to the environmental and health impact of the private transport sector, social scientists have largely focused on psychosocial and contextual factors associated with people's choice over transport means. This study aims to contribute to this line of research by applying a user-centered approach, with the objective of taking into account the specific environmental and social context of the metropolitan area of Cagliari city (Sardinia, Italy). To accomplish this aim, four groups of people were matched according to their shared starting point: car users vs. public transport users (Study 1), and light-rail users vs. non-light-rail users (Study 2). Groups were interviewed using a focus group method. Participants were invited to discuss their everyday travel experiences and to exchange their ideas on different sustainable (e.g., bicycles and public transport) and less sustainable (i.e., private cars) means of transport. Both consolidated drivers/barriers in the field of environmental psychology (e.g., perceived behavioral control, social norms) and public transportation design features (e.g., lighting) have been investigated. Other than highlighting the importance of socio-psychological factors to promote more sustainable transport choices like in previous studies, the present research offers an insight into how these aspects and factors are shaped and experienced in the narratives of residents.

How Can Music Help Us to Address the Climate Crisis?

Musicians and music psychologists are acutely aware of the power of music and its ability to influence our emotions, moods, thoughts, wellbeing, identity, and behaviour towards others. Indeed, music is often used to help address specific problems, especially within health and wellbeing. The problem of climate change is becoming increasingly well-established in public discourse, and yet individuals frequently fail to act in an environmentally-friendly manner. Within the field of environmental psychology, several empirically-based theories have been developed to aid the understanding of why individuals behave in the ways that they do in relation to the environment. This article examines a selection of these theories, and makes an attempt to identify areas in which research in music psychology provides evidence to suggest that music could play a role in influencing environment-related beliefs and behaviours.

Child, play, and urban space: a historical overview and a holistic paradigm for child-centered urbanism

ABSTRACT The relationship between children and the city is critical for both. Not only do different built environments shape different childhoods, but child-friendliness is a sign of overall city quality. Extensive research in the fields of environmental psychology and children’s geographies has highlighted the significance of urban space as children’s habitat. Cities, on the other hand, have been designed since modernity largely without taking children’s needs into account. To bridge the gap between research on children and the practice of urban design we need a holistic paradigm unifying discourses on childhood and on play with urbanism itself. I call this paradigm Spielraum. I focus on selected historical cases of child-centered practices including Red Vienna’s housing complexes, Van Eyck’s Amsterdam playgrounds, and the “Stop the Child Murder” movement in the Netherlands. Based on these and other pioneering examples, I propose four rubrics of urban design practice towards a Spielraum city.

Purpose – In purchasing goods and services, the role of the store atmosphere in the purchasing decision is very important. Considering retail clothing stores, which have a very important place in today's consumption habits, it can be easily stated that customers are exposed to many environmental stimuli, however, it can be said that consumers are highly affected by emotional and cognitive factors as well as environmental stimuli during shopping. The Model, which was developed by Mehrabian and Russel in 1974 and made significant contributions to the literature in the field of environmental psychology, is considered to be a very important model that guides marketing researchers in terms of revealing the potential of the external environment to affect behaviors and the connection of human behavior with the environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the store atmosphere on the positive emotional reactions of customers in the context of environment, design and social factors based on the S-O-R model and whether this effect affects impulsive purchasing decisions. In addition, it was aimed to determine the mediating role undertaken by the hedonic motivation, which is considered as a personal factor, in this interaction. Design/methodology/approach – In this quantitative study, first, a conceptual framework on the basis of relevant literature within the scope of research topic was created, and then a survey was conducted over 418 customers of a store serving in the retail clothing sector and has chain stores all around Turkey. Afterward, 418 survey data obtained were interpreted using SPSS AMOS 21 structural equation modeling software. Findings – As a result of the study; It was determined that there is a positive relationship between consumers' perceptions of the store atmosphere characteristics and their reactions towards the store atmosphere, and a similarly positive relationship between positive emotional reactions to the characteristics of the store atmosphere and impulsive purchasing behavior. Another finding is that hedonic motivation has a mediating role in the relationships between the characteristics of the store atmosphere (and the positive emotional reactions of consumers to these characteristics. Discussion – It can be said that the store atmosphere has a great influence on the behavior of customers in the store. The findings of the study contribute to the literature by emphasizing that the store atmosphere has a critical role in increasing the emotional and behavioral reactions of customers. Especially, by marketing managers, regulating the atmosphere in the store in a way that increases the time customers spend while shopping and in this sense, improving the emotional reactions of the customers in a positive way can be effective in impulsive purchasing decisions. In today's modern consumption approach, making purchasing decisions with hedonic motivation to take pleasure and the intermediary role of hedonic motivation in this relationship indicates the importance of the need to create consumer-based marketing strategies to be developed.

Effects of Air Pollution on Consumer Decision-Making Behavior: A Review

Purpose/Significance: In recent years, consumer behavior studies have shown that weather and air quality have a significant impact on consumers' purchasing behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the different ways and causes of consumers' responses to weather conditions. However, the existing relevant research results are scattered in different disciplines and lack of summary and sorting of the research topic. By systematically reviewing the impact of air pollution on consumer decision-making, we can fully understand the change of consumer behavior caused by air pollution factors at the macro level and help enterprise managers to develop targeted marketing management strategies to avoid or reduce the impact of air quality on consumer decision-making behavior. Design/Method: This paper systematically reviews the impact of air pollution on consumers' decision-making behavior based on key keywords retrieved from major academic literature databases and search engine websites. In detail, with the framework of the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model in the field of environmental psychology and based on the process perspective, the paper divides the impacts of air pollution on consumer's decision-making behavior into the change of body and mind before consumer decision-making process, change of the decision behavior in the process of consumption decision-making and consumption experience and evaluation behavior after the process of consumption decision making. Conclusion/Findings: By establishing and analyzing the thematic structure of studies on the impact of air pollution, the results show that air pollution has a wide range of impacts on consumers, ranging from health risks to mood changes and from changes in daily habits to changes in consumption behaviors of individuals and groups.

The Oxytocinergic System as a Mediator of Anti-stress and Instorative Effects Induced by Nature: The Calm and Connection Theory.

Ever more research results demonstrate that human health and wellbeing are positively affected by stays in and/or exposure to natural areas, which leads, among other things, to a reduction in high stress levels. However, according to the studies, these natural areas must meet certain qualities. The qualities that are considered to be most health promoting are those that humans perceive in a positive way. Theories about how natural areas can reduce people’s stress levels and improve their coping skills have mainly focused on how certain natural areas that are perceived as safe reduce the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and consequent reduction of cortisol levels. This article discusses studies containing descriptions of how participants in rehabilitation perceive and react to natural phenomena. The common core variable in the analyzed studies was the experience of calm and connection, and this experience was associated with a reduction in stress levels and with being able to develop health and coping skills. We suggest that this experience provides a possible role for the oxytocinergic system to act as a physiological mediator for the positive and health-promoting effects in humans caused by nature. The theory is mainly based on analogies framed by theories and data from the fields of environmental psychology, horticulture, landscape architecture, medicine, and neuroscience. Oxytocin promotes different kinds of social interaction and bonding and exerts stress-reducing and healing effects. We propose that oxytocin is released by certain natural phenomena experienced as positive to decrease the levels of fear and stress, increase levels of trust and wellbeing, and possibly develop attachment or bonding to nature. By these effects, oxytocin will induce health-promoting effects. In situations characterized by low levels of fear and stress in response to release of oxytocin, the capacity for “growth” or psychological development might also be promoted. Such an instorative effect of nature, i.e., the capacity of nature to promote reorientation and the creation of new coping strategies, might hence represent an additional aspect of the oxytocin-linked effect profile, triggered in connection with certain nature phenomena. We conclude by proposing that the stress-relieving, health-promoting, restorative, and instorative effects of nature may involve activation of the oxytocinergic system.

Ageing- and dementia-friendly design: theory and evidence from cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and environmental psychology can contribute to design guidelines that minimise spatial disorientation

Many older people, both with and without dementia, eventually move from their familiar home environments into unfamiliar surroundings, such as sheltered housing or care homes. Age-related declines in wayfinding skills can make it difficult to learn to navigate in these new, unfamiliar environments. To facilitate the transition to their new accommodation, it is therefore important to develop retirement complexes and care homes specifically designed to reduce the wayfinding difficulties of older people and those with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Residential complexes that are designed to support spatial orientation and that compensate for impaired navigation abilities would make it easier for people with dementia to adapt to their new living environment. This would improve the independence, quality of life and well-being of residents, and reduce the caregivers’ workload. Based on these premises, this opinion paper considers how evidence from cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and environmental psychology can contribute to ageing- and dementia-friendly design with a view to minimising spatial disorientation. After an introduction of the cognitive mechanisms and processes involved in spatial navigation, and the changes that occur in typical and atypical ageing, research from the field of environmental psychology is considered, highlighting design factors likely to facilitate (or impair) indoor wayfinding in complex buildings. Finally, psychological theories and design knowledge are combined to suggest ageing- and dementia-friendly design guidelines that aim to minimise spatial disorientation by focusing on residual navigation skills.

토픽모델링과 연결망 분석을 활용한 국내 조경 분야 연구 동향 분석 - 한국조경학회지를 대상으로 -

For the past half century, the Journal of the Korean Landscape Architecture has been leading the landscape architecture research and industry inclusively. In this study, abstracts of 1,802 articles were collected and analyzed with topic modeling and network analysis method. As a result of this paper, a total of 27 types of subjects were identified. Health and healing in the field of environmental psychology, garden and aesthetics, participation and community, modernity, place and placenness, microclimate, tourism and social equity also have been continued as important research area in this journal. Modernity, community and urban regeneration is hot topics and ecological landscape related topics were cold topics. Although there was a difference by subject, the variability of the research subjects appeared after the 2000s. In Network analysis, it shows that ‘Park’ is a representative keyword that can symbolize the journal, and ‘landscape’ is also important a leading area of the journal. Looking at the overall structure of the network, it can be seen that the journal conducts research on ‘utilizing’, ‘using’, and creating ‘park’, ‘landscape’, and ‘space’. This study is meaningful in that it grasped the overall research trend of the journal by using topic modeling and network analysis of text mining.
