Fibrocollagenous tissue tube as a small arterial substitute.

A new arterial graft, a fibrocollagenous tissue tube supported by polyester mesh, was evaluated as a substitute for a small caliber artery. The graft of 3 mm in internal diameter and 3.5 to 5.7 cm in length were implanted into the external iliac arteries of 24 dogs. The patency rate of the graft was 73% from 0 to 7 months following the operation. The newly formed vascular wall was soft and stable. The graft showed good endothelization of the neointima.

Two entities in angiolipoma. A study of 459 cases of lipoma with review of literature on infiltrating angiolipoma.

A study of lipomas collected over the past 20 years in a university hospital indicated that there are two types of angiolipoma, namely noninfiltrating and infiltrating. Noninfiltrating angiolipoma is seen in young individuals and presents as painful, soft, cutaneous nodules. Occasional compression of nerve fibers that accompany the vascular channels could be demonstrated. Treatment is merely enucleation. Infiltrating angiolipoma is rather rare. Only 23 cases have been reported in the English literature. Though histologically benign, the tumor can infiltrate bony, muscular, neural, and fibrocollagenous tissues to cause unusual symptoms and signs and can clinically simulate malignant neoplasms. Wide excision to include the normal tissue surrounding the tumor is mandatory. Radiotherapy should be rendered to cases with recurrence.

The fine structure of experimentally induced connective tissue complexes in the human.

The growth, development and cellular activity of fibrocollagenous tissue complexes induced by the implantation of specially structured wire mesh cylinders in 22 human male volunteers were studied during the time course of fibroplasia utilizing light and electron microscopic techniques. The fibrocollagenous tissue complexes after 4 to 16 weeks of development demonstrated highly ordered lamellations made of zones consisting primarily of fibroblasts and zones consisting primarily of collagenous fibers. The development of the ordered lamellations is referable to specific fibrillogenic activities by the constituent fibroblasts. The initial role of the fibroblast in fibrillogenesis is indicative of an apocrine-like secretory process followed by a holocrine-like role which results in cytodestruction and concurrent formation of an avascular collagenic tissue referable to an organizing cicatrix in a healing wound.
