28.2: Driving Method of FFS‐Mode OS‐LCD for Reducing Eye Strain

AbstractIn order to reduce eye strain, a driving method reducing flickers is devised. For this driving, material constitution is optimized and an FFS mode with a storage capacitor is used. We fabricated an OS‐LCD, thereby revealing the possibility of reducing‐eye‐strain technology (REST) driving even in combination with a touch sensor.

P.37: Novel Gray‐toneless Technology for Mask Reduction in High Aperture Rate FFS Mode

AbstractIn this paper, we have successfully developed novel gray‐toneless technology for mask reduction in high aperture rate FFS mode. The key processes are the gray‐toneless technology and new PIC (pixel ITO plus channel) processes. These new technologies are able to protect channel area from pixel ITO processes and decrease defect rate of data line open due to having double layer structure. Also Panel quality was improved by reducing capacitance change between Pixel and Data line through PIC processes.

P‐97: Electrode Structure for High Transmittance IPS Mode

AbstractWe propose a new electrode structure using three voltage levels instead of two for high transmittance in the in‐plane switching liquid crystal mode. We confirmed that, by using the proposed structure, the transmittance of a LC cell can be increased from 29 % to 35 % at a slightly lower operating voltage. The transmittance of the proposed mode is higher than the conventional FFS mode.

P‐95: Novel Rubbing Cloth Providing an Alignment Layer with Low Pretilt Angle and Large Azimuthal Anchoring Energy

AbstractWe studied the rubbing cloths with different pile length and cloth materials, and investigated their influences on the alignment property of the alignment layer. It has been found that rayon cloth which contains fine TiO2 particles provides an alignment layer with low pretilt angle and large azimuthal anchoring energy and is suitable for the rubbing process in the manufacturing of IPS or FFS mode LCDs.

Effects of Carbon Nanotube Length on Electro-Optical Characteristics in Liquid Crystal Cell Driven by Fringe Field Switching

We have fabricated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal cells driven by fringe-field switching and their electro-optic characteristics were investigated. The CNTs doped liquid crystal cell shows lower transmittance, higher driving voltage but faster response time than those in the pure liquid crystal cell. In addition, CNTs-doped liquid crystal cells as a function of the CNT length were investigated. This paper gives an explanation on difference in electro-optic characteristics of pure and CNT-doped LC in the FFS mode.

P‐30: Single Cell Gap Wide‐View Transflective LCD using Twist Fringe‐Field Switch Mode

AbstractA novel single cell‐gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) with FFS mode has been proposed. The transmissive region is homogeneous aligned. And reflective region is partial twisted and tilted to reach single gap design. In addition, the VT and VR curve is similar by optima pixel width, space and tilt angle in R‐region.

P‐129: Study on Electro‐Optic Characteristics According to Length between Pixel Electrodes in the Fringe and In‐Plane Field Switching Mode

AbstractWe have studied electro‐optic characteristics of high performance liquid crystal display using combined fringe and in‐plane horizontal electric fields, named as fringe and In‐plane switching (FIS). The strong electric fields cause more liquid crystals to reorient above and between the pixel electrodes. Moreover, the operating voltage of FIS mode was decreased by using two thin film transistors (TFTs). To suggest novel structure of FIS mode, electro optic characteristics are analyzed as a function of length between pixel electrodes compared to IPS and FFS mode. Consequently FIS mode shows not only higher transmittance but also lower operating voltage than those of IPS and FFS mode while keeping wide viewing angle.

Fast‐response liquid‐crystal displays using crossed fringe fields

Abstract— A fast‐response and wide‐view liquid‐crystal display (LCD) using the crossed fringe‐field‐switching (CFFS) mode is proposed, where the fringe‐field electrodes exist on both the top and bottom substrates. The bottom fringe field is used to turn on the LC directors and the top fringe field is used to assist in the LC decay process. The decay time is reduced by ∼2× compared to that of the conventional FFS mode between the full bright and dark states, and more than a 2× improvement is obtained for other gray‐scale transitions. This CFFS mode also preserves the wide‐view characteristics as the conventional FFS mode. Its applications to LCD TVs and monitors for reducing image blur are addressed.

P-111: Voltage and Rubbing Angle Dependent Behavior of the Single Cell Gap Transflective Fringe Field Switching (FFS) Mode

Rubbing angle-dependent electro-optic characteristics in the single cell gap transflective FFS mode have been studied. The adjustment of the rubbing angle reduces the difference in voltage-dependent reflectance and transmittance curves.

P-164: Pressure-Resistant Characteristic of Fringe-Field Switching (FFS) Mode Depending on the Distance Between Pixel Electrodes

We have investigated pressure-resistant characteristic of the FFS mode depending on the distance between slits of pixel electrode by applying external pressure to the panel. The panel with pixel electrode with long distance shows stronger pressure resistance than that with short distance, which is much advantageous for pen-based touch panel display.

P‐96: Cell Gap‐Dependent Electro‐optic Characteristics of the Fringe‐Field Switching (FFS) Mode

AbstractCell gap‐dependent electro‐optic characteristics in the FFS mode have been studied. The operating voltage decreases with decreasing cell gap for the positive LC and response time becomes very fast with decreasing cell gap owing to increase of field intensity.
