Glasses containing no glass-formers can be quenched in the field of mixed oxides and mixed sulfates; roller quenching at 10 7 degrees sec −1 was used. Several hundred compositions such as LiNbO 3, KTaO 3, Li 2Mo 2O 7, Y 3Fe 5O 12, Li 5GaO 4, Li 4CdK 2(SO 4) 4, and LiLa(SO 4) 2 were quenched to form glasses and many showed glass transitions. Crystallization temperatures range from 250°C to over 700°C. Frequently, a metastable crystalline phase forms during the exothermic crystallization and is subsequently converted to the stable phase at a second, higher temperature exotherm. Properties observed include ferroelectric-like behavior, antiferromagnetism, and large ionic conductivities. With careful crystallization control, powders with grain size as small as 100Å can be prepared.
