PENYAMPAIAN RASA TAKUT DALAM FILM HOROR QODRAT KARYA CHARLES GOZALI

The growth in popularity of horror films can be seen from the high number of horror films produced and their success at the box office. One example of a famous horror film is Qodrat, directed by Charles Gozali, which was released in October 2022. Qodrat is a horror genre film that combines action and religion with a duration of 102 minutes where Vino G. Bastian plays the main character in this film as a Qodrat chaplain. The aim of this research is to find out every scene that shows fear in the horror film Qodrat by Charles Gozali and to draw conclusions from the film about what are the signs and signifieds through semiotic analysis. This research uses a qualitative approach with Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic analysis method. In this theory, semiotics is divided into two parts, namely the signifier and the signified. This research was carried out by observing signs in several scenes, including the scenes at minute 35:30 and minute 1:05:39 which contain fear in the film Qodrat. Observations were made by watching films via the application streaming platform and taking screen captures of scenes that were deemed to contain markers and signs. The results of this research show that from the two Hude theories and Aditya's theory, differences can be seen where Hude expresses fear that occurs in changes in behavior, whereas according to Aditya the cause of fear can occur because of fear related to places, for example fear of the dark (achluphobia).

Pesan Kritik Sosial Deforestasi Pada Lirik Lagu Rat Tua Karya FSTVLST

The aim of this research is to understand the social criticism message about deforestation in Indonesia through the song "Rat Tua" by FSTVLST. The current climate crisis can already be felt, for example, through temperature changes and high rainfall. Raising awareness about the importance of this climate crisis issue requires various efforts, one of which can be through music. Fans of the band will surely understand and become aware of the issues brought by their favorite band. This research aims to dissect the critical message in the song "Rat Tua" with various metaphors and archaic or rarely used language. It employs Ferdinand De Saussure's semiotic analysis method with data collection techniques in the form of document studies. FSTVLST creates a song about trees but does not use the word "tree". It can be concluded that human actions are the main factor in the climate crisis. Human awareness of trees and forests is still lacking, and deforestation is evidence that humans are not improving the earth but worsening the impact of the climate crisis.

The Whining Karen meme on X: a semiotic analysis

This study conducts a semiotic analysis of the specific "Karen" meme of whining on social media platform X, utilizing Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. This meme typically depicts a stereotype of a forceful, entitled, and confrontational individual, and it is often linked to middle-aged white women, expanded to encompass various individuals. The findings reveal a consistent pattern of meaning play, revolving around the utilization of the term "Karen" in conjunction with the descriptor "whining." "Karen" is used as a stereotypical reference, often employed to mock individuals perceived as entitled, overly critical, or complaining. It is used to dismiss or undermine the credibility of the opposing viewpoint, implying that the concerns expressed are unwarranted or exaggerated. Overall, the pattern across these conversations highlights the use of Karen memes as a means of ridiculing or dismissing opposing viewpoints perceived as complaining or entitled. This use adds a derisive and somewhat sarcastic tone to the responses, suggesting that the concerns are frivolous or exaggerated. This highlights the complex interplay of language, stereotype, and meaning in internet memes. The results underscore the adaptability and depth of Saussure's theory in deciphering the intricacies of online discourse, particularly within the realm of meme culture.

Semiotic Analysis on TV Series Industry: Case Study of Criminal Minds Poster

This research aims to identify and explain the signifiers, signified, denotations, connotations meanings, and myths embedded in the signs of the TV series Criminal Minds poster. In this research, the authors used the descriptive qualitative method to identify, analyze, and explain the signs in the Criminal Minds TV series poster. The authors also employ Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes' semiotic approach in the research. The primary data of this research is taken from both the verbal and nonverbal signs in Criminal Minds TV Series posters. This research shows that there are nine nonverbal and two verbal signs. Furthermore, after analyzing all of the signs (both verbal and nonverbal) in Saussure and Barthes' semiotic approach, this study found that all of the signs carry specific messages. Its purpose is to give the audience teasers or clues about the story, which tells about the journey of all main characters of Criminal Minds. Moreover, the myth commonly found across the signs in this TV series poster is to attract more potential viewers to watch the series.

Linguistics and semiotics in the framework of the sciences in general: Naville, Saussure, and Peirce

The paper examines the place of semiotics and linguistics, as well as their historical precursors in the framework of the sciences in general. Early classifications of the sciences considered include those of Aristotle, the Scholastics, Francis Bacon, and John Locke. The focus of this paper is on XIXth-century systems. After a cursory glance at André-Marie Ampère’s and Roswell Park’s systems, the study will turn to the classifications of linguistics and semiotics within the systems of Adrien Naville, Ferdinand de Saussure, and Charles S. Peirce. The paper provides a brief survey of XXIst-century views on the place of linguistics in its relation to semiotics before concluding with a study of semiotics among the sciences of the XXIst century.

Life and Wisdom in Tembang Lir ilir and Kidung Rumekso ing Wengi: A Philosophical Analysis

The traditional Javanese songs created by Sunan Kalijaga, especially Lir ilir and Kidung Rumekso ing Wengi, have tremendous philosophical depth when associated with Javanese culture. Therefore, this research aims to explore and analyze the philosophical meaning contained in the two previous songs and find out how the spiritual messages in these songs are still relevant to the state of society in the modern era. This research uses Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic analysis to find out the deeper meaning of the text, not forgetting to also use the cultural context approach, to minimize irrelevant interpretations. For data validation, this research uses the triangulation method, where the data comes from interviews, historical records, and direct observation. In practice, the point is to explore the messages contained in the two songs, which are all sourced from the lyrics of these songs and the opinions of experts. The results show that both songs contain philosophical teachings on how to achieve wisdom and peace in every episode of human life. They also teach about the importance of establishing a good relationship with God. In addition, this study also revealed that the spiritual messages in these two songs are still relevant as a reflection of the spiritual journey of everyone in the modern era.

Analisis Semiotika Makna Pesan Motivasi pada Lirik Lagu "Evaluasi" Karya Hindia

This research aims to examine the meaning of the motivational messages present in the lyrics of the song 'Evaluasi' by Hindia. A qualitative method based on Ferdinand de Saussure's concept of semiotic analysis is used, and a constructivist perspective serves as the theoretical framework. The results of the research show that the song lyrics from "Evaluasi" by Hindia and the signifier aspects found are the result of interpretation of the lyrics of the song "Evaluasi" by Hindia. The meaning of the motivational message is found in the lyrics of the song "Evaluasi" by Hindia. Stated in the problem formulation, the type of motivation is divided into two and the one used in the lyrics of the song "Evaluation" is the type of intrinsic motivation which is found throughout the song from verse 1 (one) to verse 8 (eight). The type of meaning found in the lyrics of the song "Evaluasi" is dominated by the connotative meaning found in stanza 1 (one), stanza 3 (three), stanza 4 (four), and stanza 5 (five). In conclusion, the type of meaning in the song "Evaluation" is connotative meaning. The type of message found is a persuasive message. Hierarchy Needs of Investigation Journalist in Spotlight Movie: The Semiotics Study

Spotlight movie explains about investigation journalist activities on The Boston Globe office. Editor in chief of The Boston Globe interests in the case of childhood sexual abuse in the US. While the team investigates it, they encounter many obstacles on the field. They get the threat and intimidate from any parts. The key sources do not want to talk about the incident. They do not provide important data about this case. In the end, Spotlight team managed to uncover the truth. Their investigation was successful and also get a Pulitzer award. This research use hierarchy of needs theory to analyze the motivations of investigative journalist. The hierarchy of needs illustrates the level of a person’s needs, start from psychological needs; safety needs; love and belonging needs; self-esteem; and self-actualization. This research also uses Ferdinand de Saussure theory to analyze signs, signifiers and signified that indicate about fulfillment needed of humans. The findings of this study show that Spotlight journalist has reached the highest human needs, namely self-actualization. Investigation journalists have big motivation to occur the optimal work as a social warrior to reveal facts and uphold justice.

MAKNA CINTA TERPENDAM DALAM PUISI HOSHI KARYA SHIRAISHI KAZUKO: KAJIAN SEMIOTIKA

Poetry is a form of literary work that has unique characteristics because it is written in a dense and beautiful language, and in poetry there are often connotative and figurative words. This research discusses the contemporary poetry of Hoshi by Shiraishi Kazuko using the semiotic approach of the Ferdinand de Saussure. The data collection methods used in this research were observation and literature study methods. This poem tells the story of a writer who tries to convey a hidden feeling that he wants to express to someone. The results of the analysis on this poem shows the meaning of the signs contained in this poem describing such as: (1) how the writer feels trying to find the truth in himself, (2) is in a state of having a lot of thoughts and considerations, (3) feelings that have been buried for a long time, causing a feeling of discomfort and uncertainty (4) the writer who comprehend his feelings and his thoughts in silence, (5) the longing and hope of the character makes him want to close his eyes and fall asleep into fantasies.

Meaning Visualization: A Saussurean Semiotic Analysis of the Film Merry Riana

The objective of this study is to determine the motivational messages that are sent in the movie "Merry Riana: Million Dollar Dream" to identify the inspirational messages. The semiotic theory developed by Ferdinand de Saussure is used in this study. Through the use of this theoretical method, the meaning of signified and signifiers that are present in the movie Merry Riana is investigated. Identification of signified and signifier aspects in the film Merry Riana is carried out through variations of scenes that appear in the film. Apart from that, the method used is a qualitative approach by collecting data through observation and interviews with several sources who have insight into the film or were inspired by the film Merry Riana. The informants who conducted this interview included general audiences, film academics, and the film community, totaling nine informants. The result of the research finds that the film Merry Riana can inspire its viewers, and there are many inspirational messages for the audience in the film Merry Riana.

Semiotic Analysis of Bullying Practices in Drama School 2015: Study of Emile Durkheim's Theory of Suicide

The existence of humans as social beings is represented through the formation of social groups as an effort to maintain and develop their lives. However, instead of forming harmony and balance, humans also often commit social deviations, one of which is through bullying behavior. Bullying behavior does not only occur in the work environment but has entered the school environment. One of them is in South Korea, where bullying rates and suicide rates are both high, showing that there is a relevance between bullying rates and suicide rates. Now, this phenomenon is constructed through drama as a reflection of social reality. The focus of this research is to find out how the practice and relevance of bullying behavior and suicide cases in the 2015 school drama. The research method used is Ferdinand De Saussure's semiotic analysis method which focuses on discussing the concept of signifiers and signifieds. The data studied are pieces of dialogue, images, and sound. In this study the authors used Emile Durkheim's Suicide theory. The findings in this study are that there is a relevance between bullying practices and suicide cases. This is also exacerbated by the finding that victims of bullying often do not have adequate social groups. Because the more individuals have sufficient social groups, then this is capital in maintaining their lives from other social groups. The location of the social group greatly influences a person's decision to commit suicide. Thus, the social group has an important position for a person as part of his efforts to defend himself and maintain his self-esteem and the harmony of social relations.

STUDI ANALISIS PESAN DAKWAH DALAM FILM ANIMASI IBRA PADA EPISODE 10 FOMO

Da'wah of Islam develops over time. The elements, materials, and means of da'wah have also developed. Da'wah media are increasingly diverse, including YouTube which allows broadcasts in minutes. Dakwah content on YouTube is an option as entertainment, education and information to replace TV programs that are not always in accordance with religious values. Thus, the animated film Ibra appeared, made by Indonesian children, which raised the Islamic message and the story of the Prophet Muhammad, and gave teachings to all ages. Researchers are interested in Ibra's animated film, especially in episode 10: FOMO on his YouTube account, Ibra Berkisah, because in that episode FOMO is significant in various aspects of Indonesian society: social media, education, social, consumption, religion and can affect behavior change, especially young generation. This study uses qualitative methods with a focus on literature review and a descriptive approach. The human instrument method is also used to determine focus, select relevant data sources, collect, evaluate, analyze, interpret data, and draw conclusions. The researcher analyzed the animated film Ibra episode 10 using the Ferdinand de Saussure Semiotics approach, using visual and audio data as sources. The main objective is to understand and analyze the da'wah messages contained in the animation. The analysis results of Ibra's animation episode 10 FOMO reveal the concept of da'wah conveyed through moral messages and religious values. The delivery of these Islamic values ​​takes the form of stories with moral messages, an introduction to religious teachings, as well as motivation and inspiration that are packaged in a fun and easy-to-understand way, especially for children and adolescents. Semiotic signs, such as linguistic, visual, sound, movement, and expression, strengthen da'wah messages emotionally and cognitively. The results of the analysis in each scene contain various messages that teach mutual forgiveness, the importance of knowledge, tolerance, respect for differences, the dangers of FOMO, and holding on to the truth even when faced with hostility.

Meanings Behind the Carving Motifs of Traditional Malay Houses

Woodcarving motifs, including Negeri Sembilan, are significant in Malaysian art, bearing ancient knowledge and latent meanings. However, the understanding of Malay woodcarving motifs in Kuala Pilah is relatively limited compared to the east coast. The urgency to study these motifs intensifies as urbanization rapidly changes the landscape, representing not only woodcarvers’ skills but also profound cultural symbolism. This paper aims to interpret the meanings within these motifs in traditional Malay houses in Kuala Pilah, employing qualitative methods such as observation, interviews, photographic records, and secondary data analysis alongside Ferdinand de Saussure’s Semiotics Theory for analysis. The cultural and social significance embedded in these motifs is unveiled through signifier and signified analysis. The results revealed the presence of various motifs encompassing geometry, fauna, flora, and still life. The study also uncovered that each motif plays a pivotal role in conveying the cultural and social values of the Malay people in Negeri Sembilan and enhances our understanding of the traditional art form of woodcarving amidst contemporary transformations.

Semiotic Analysis of Gender in Advertisements Displayed in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK)

Gender portrayal in advertising is a critical aspect of understanding how societal norms and expectations surrounding gender roles and identity are constructed and reinforced. Many studies have examined the representation of gender in advertising, but little research has been done on outdoor billboard advertising, especially from a Pakistani perspective. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how gender is portrayed in international, national, and local ads in both the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) provinces, using semiotic analysis as the method of inquiry. A sample of 360 billboards was selected using purposive sampling, and the study was grounded in Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of social semiotics and Charles Sanders Peirce's philosophy of signs. The findings revealed significant differences in the portrayal of gender across different product categories in outdoor advertising, as well as differences between the two provinces. Women were often objectified, and gender stereotypes such as the idea that women should be responsible for household duties, nurturing roles, and male dominance were commonly depicted in both provinces. The study highlights the need for policymakers and industry professionals to establish codes of ethics for gender representation in outdoor billboard advertising in Punjab and KPK.

From Saussure to Lacan: The Primacy of the Signifier

Ferdinand de Saussure, often regarded as the father of modern linguistics, proposed that language is a system of signs. His introduction of the symbolic system and linguistic signs later triggered a wave of structuralism in academia and had a profound impact on the early works of Jacques Lacan. Saussure believed in the primacy of the signified, that is, the concept having precedence over the signifier, a notion contested by psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. This paper offers an in-depth interpretation of Lacans example, highlighting the primacy of the signifier within the sign system and refuting Saussures view of the primacy of the signified. Lacan revised and corrected Saussures concepts of the signifier and signified, noting that the concept is merely the effect of differentially related symbols. Building on this, the paper further details the perspectives of structuralism and attempts to reveal the origin and synchronic characteristics of the symbolic system from a philosophical viewpoint. Additionally, the paper discusses Lacans concept of the master signifier, underscoring its significance in the critique of ideology.

Signifying unity: exploring the interplay of semiotics, universalism and pluralism in information science

PurposeThe purpose of this study is twofold: first, to provide a nuanced understanding of the information concept that encapsulates both its universal foundations and context-dependent intricacies, and second, to propose a theoretical framework that integrates these diverse viewpoints, thereby contributing to the theoretical discourse and practical applications in information science/studies (IS).Design/methodology/approachThe aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between universalism and pluralism in connection with semiotics. The paper adopts a conceptual approach based on semiotics to address the long-standing debate over the definition of information in IS. By engaging with two foundational semiotic theories—C.S. Peirce's pragmatic semiotics and Ferdinand de Saussure's structuralist semiotics – the research seeks to bridge the conflicting perspectives of universalism and pluralism within the field.FindingsThe findings reveal that Peirce's semiotics, with its universalist core, views information as dynamic and shaped by context, while Saussure's approach, which is rooted in linguistics, emphasizes the relational aspects of sign systems and connects them to pluralism. This comparative analysis facilitates a broad understanding of information that transcends the limitations of singular perspectives. In conclusion, the paper seeks to demonstrate that the integration of universalist and pluralist perspectives through semiotics offers a more holistic approach to the study of information in IS. It contributes to the field by suggesting that the tension between these perspectives is not only reconcilable but also essential for a richer and more complete understanding of information. This theoretical foundation paves the way for future research and practical advancements in IS and advocates for approaches that recognize the complexity and multifaceted nature of information.Research limitations/implicationsThe study engages with theoretical frameworks, predominantly semiotic theories by C.S. Peirce and Ferdinand de Saussure. While this provides a deep conceptual understanding, the lack of empirical data may limit the practical applicability of the findings. The research focuses on two semiotic perspectives, which, although foundational, do not represent the entirety of semiotics or information theory. Other significant semiotic theories and perspectives could provide alternative or complementary insights. The concepts of universalism and pluralism in information science are highly intricate and multifaceted. This study's approach to synthesizing these concepts, while comprehensive, might oversimplify some aspects of these complex paradigms.Originality/valueThe paper's originality lies in its unique integration of semiotic theories into the discourse of IS. This integration offers a novel perspective on understanding the concept of information, bridging the gap between universalist and pluralist approaches. The study presents a new conceptual framework for understanding information that combines elements of universalism (consistent, objective understanding of information) and pluralism (context-dependent, subjective interpretations). This dual approach is relatively unexplored in IS literature, providing fresh insights into the complex nature of information.

Controlled Childhood and the Moulding of the Children's Characters; Critical Analysis of Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Hard Times, and Great Expectations

This study reads Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Hard Times, and Great Expectations as "condition of England novels" by applying realism and naturalism theories, which focus on "parole". The term referred to by Ferdinand de Saussure in language acquisition to mean "performance". This paper addresses how Charles Dickens uses the term "parole" to refer to children's performance under social influences. Through his works, Dickens shows that the environment plays an elementary role in building children's characters as they grasp knowledge from their surroundings. They interact with the social environment, which fosters or hinders their development. Childhood is a crucial stage in the development of societies. Through the portrayal of children in Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Hard Times, and Great Expectations, Dickens highlights the ordeals and suffering of children in the nineteenth century and shows the plight of the Industrial Revolution as it damaged the essential block of Victorian society. Accordingly, schools, factories, streets, workhouses, teachers, masters, and parents all of these take part in the formation of the child’s character. Children during that time faced different types of social pressures that affected their characters and future lives. This study investigates Dickens’ embedded message, showing how childhood is not only a stage of playing but is also important and influential in the performance and shaping of the child’s character.

Deciphering the Semiotic Landscape of Love in Lana Del Rey's 'Mariners Apartment Complex' Song Lyrics

This research paper presents an analysis of Lana Del Rey's song "Mariners Apartment Complex" through the lens of semiotics, using Ferdinand de Saussure's theory to explore the complex signification and interpretation of love in the song's lyrics. This research uses a qualitative approach, focusing on identifying signifiers and signs, and interpreting each verse of the song. The results of the analysis show that the song is rich in messages that convey the power of love, as experienced by a woman. Themes of heartbreak and lovesickness are interwoven throughout the lyrics, showcasing Lana Del Rey's portrayal of a woman deeply invested in deep and unwavering affection. This research highlights the complexity and depth of emotions expressed in the song, highlighting the multifaceted nature of love as a central theme.

Transmuting the painterly sign

Abstract According to renowned linguist and semiotician Roman Jakobson, translation can be divided into three general categories: intralingual translation, interlingual translation, and intersemiotic translation/transmutation. Unlike the first two categories, intersemiotic transmutation lacks the usual isomorphism that exist between a source and its target, but that should not deter us from discovering an underlying universal process of two-step interpretation that is involved in transmuting painting as a nonverbal sign into art criticism which is mostly verbal. Put simply, painting as a special form of human communication relies heavily on iconicity between “representamen” and its “object,” but this is only the first step on our way toward the hidden meaning of a visual text. To achieve the latter goal, we also need – often, but not always, through indexical reasoning – to make connections between a painting and its sociohistorical context in the manner of logical abduction as proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce rather than structural differentiation as advocated by Ferdinand de Saussure. Compared with iconic correspondences, indexical relations are far more arbitrary and therefore extremely difficult to reconstruct.

Analisis Semiotika Pola Komunikasi Keluarga pada Film “Noktah Merah Perkawinan”

The film 'Noktah Merah Perkawinan' tells the story of a married couple who have been married for several years and have two children. The communication patterns between the characters Gilang and Ambar depict events that reflect realities often observed in society, such as conflicts within a household. Therefore, the objective of this research is to analyze the semiotics of family communication patterns in the film 'Noktah Merah Perkawinan.' This research employs the semiotic analysis method of Ferdinand De Saussure, which comprises two elements: signifier and signified. Additionally, the research categorizes communication patterns based on De Vito's classification, including monopolistic family communication, balanced separate communication, unbalanced separate communication, and equality communication. According to this classification, the findings reveal that in monopolistic communication patterns, one party significantly dominates based on their influence within the family. In the case of balanced separate family communication, each family member plays their respective roles. Unbalanced separate communication occurs when communication within the family involves only one individual dominating due to their perceived expertise on a particular issue. In contrast, equality communication is characterized by open communication among family members without any specific restrictions. In conclusion, the research demonstrates that family communication patterns in this film vary widely, with each family member having their distinct role. Moreover, it suggests that all conflicts depicted in the film 'Noktah Merah Perkawinan' can be resolved through effective communication without any imposed limitations, as seen in the equality communication pattern.
