Turbulence-enhanced THz generation by multiple chaotically-distributed femtosecond filaments in air

Remote generation of electromagnetic waves in the terahertz (THz) by the volume of air medium gains increasing scientific interest due to the demand for this spectral range in solving various practical problems including those belonging to the nonlinear atmospheric optics. During self-focusing and filamentation of high-power femtosecond laser pulses in air, the source of THz radiation is the plasma of laser filaments. One of the main challenges of THz generation by a laser filament is increasing the value of optical energy conversion to the long-wavelength band. In this paper, we present the results of our studies on DC-biased THz generation during single-color filamentation in air of focused femtosecond Ti:Sapphire-laser pulses (800 nm, pulse energy up to 40 mJ). The distinctive feature of our study is that a femtosecond optical pulse propagates through a spatially-localized heated air layer containing randomly inhomogeneous refractive index perturbations, which mimics strong air turbulence. For the first time to our knowledge, we show, that the turbulent air layer formed at the beginning of the optical path allows increasing the yield of THz radiation up to 1.5 times due to the formation of multiple chaotically-arranged filaments resulting from random perturbations of the optical beam energy profile that reduces the subsequent THz (re)absorption in the filament plasma.

Polarization change of femtosecond laser pulses in air measured by electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation.

We experimentally demonstrated the polarization change of femtosecond laser pulses in air by using electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (E-FISHG) for the first time to our knowledge. The polarization change from linear to elliptical was observed at the laser intensity over the filamentation threshold. These results suggest that the polarization change can occur by the birefringence caused by filamentation. This phenomenon can be used for new applications such as an ultra-fast and precise three-dimensional electric field measurement by E-FISHG. In addition, E-FISHG can be an excellent tool to investigate the characteristics of femtosecond laser propagation such as filamentation.

Manipulation of femtosecond laser filamentation by wire mesh amplitude mask

The results of numerical simulation on the propagation of high-power femtosecond laser pulses in air under conditions of the amplitude modulation are presented. Laser pulse amplitude modulation is realized by using the metal mesh-masks, which divide the initial laser beam into lower-energy parts (subbeams). We show that, in general, the beam energy partitioning by metal meshes reduces the total length of beam filamentation region in air, whereas the longitudinal continuity of the laser plasma distribution in the filaments is considerably improved. A strong dependence of the filamentation region parameters (starting coordinate, length, longitudinal continuity) on the position of the mesh-mask relative to the laser beam axis is also revealed. It turns out that under certain conditions, when the beam axis points to the mesh crossing, the spatial position of the filaments can be shifted further along the propagation path by increasing the size of the mesh cells. Alternatively, if the beam center exposes the mesh cell opening, the filamentation start coordinate decreases monotonically when the mesh becomes sparser. Additionally, the parameters of the filamentation region exhibit high sensitivity to the mesh wire thickness that can dominate the influence of mesh position and cell size.

Simulation of nonlinear propagation of femtosecond laser pulses in air for quantitative prediction of the ablation crater shape.

The utilization of sub-100 fs pulses has attracted attention as an approach to further improve the quality and precision of femtosecond laser microfabrication. However, when using such lasers at pulse energies typical for laser processing, nonlinear propagation effects in air are known to distort the beam's temporal and spatial intensity profile. Due to this distortion, it has been difficult to quantitatively predict the final processed crater shape of materials ablated by such lasers. In this study, we developed a method to quantitatively predict the ablation crater shape, utilizing nonlinear propagation simulations. Investigations revealed that the ablation crater diameters derived by our method were in excellent quantitative agreement with experimental results for several metals over a two-orders-of-magnitude range in the pulse energy. We also found a good quantitative correlation between the simulated central fluence and the ablation depth. Such methods should improve the controllability of laser processing with sub-100 fs pulses and contribute to furthering their practical application to processes over a wide pulse-energy range, including conditions with nonlinear-propagating pulses.

Influence of a pinhole diameter on the experimental determination of critical power for femtosecond filamentation in air.

Filamentation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in optical media has attracted great attention due to its various unique characteristics and potential applications. It is an important task to determine the critical power for the filamentation especially in many applications, which can be obtained by evaluating the transmitted pulse energy through a pinhole located in the filamentation region as a function of input laser energy. The pinhole diameter is very crucial to the measurement. However, there is no report on the experimental determination of critical power for filamentation in air by using the pinhole method and the influence of the pinhole diameter on the determination. In this paper, we numerically and experimentally investigate the influence of pinhole diameter on the determination of the filamentation critical power. The obtained critical power tends to a reasonable value as the decrease of the pinhole diameter, because the transmitted energy through the pinhole with a smaller diameter is more sensitive to the change of energy distribution in the beam cross section during the beginning process of filamentation. Under our experimental condition, the pinhole diameter as small as ∼50 µm is applicable to be used to determine the critical power for filamentation of femtosecond laser pulses in air.

Self-channeling of spatially modulated femtosecond laser beams in the post-filamentation region

The propagation of high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses in air under conditions of superposed spatial phase modulation is considered theoretically. The numerical simulations are carried out on the basis of the reduced form of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a time-averaged electric field envelope. Initial spatial modulations are applied to pulse wavefront profiling by a staggered ( T E M 22 ) phase plate, which is simulated numerically. The dynamics of laser pulse self-focusing, filamentation, and post-filamentation self-channeling after the phase plates with variable phase jumps is studied. We show that, with specific phase modulations, the pulse filamentation region in air can be markedly shifted further and elongated compared with a nonmodulated pulse. Moreover, during the post-filamentation propagation of spatially structured radiation, the highly localized light channels are formed, possessing enhanced intensity and reduced angular divergence, which enables post-filamentation pulse self-channeling on the distance multiple exceeding the Rayleigh range.

Elongation of filamentation and enhancement of supercontinuum generation by a preformed air density hole.

The filamentation of the femtosecond laser pulse in air with a preformed density hole is studied numerically. The result shows that density-hole-induced defocusing effect can relieve the self-focusing of the pulse, and by changing the length of the density hole and relative delay time, the filamentation length, intensity, spectral energy density and broaden region can be effectively controlled. When a short density hole with millisecond delay time is introduced, a significant elongation of the filamentation and enhancement of supercontinuum intensity can be obtained. This study provides a new method to control filamentation by pulse sequence.

Temporal and spatial properties of plasma induced by infrared femtosecond laser pulses in air

Space and time-resolved electron density and temperature of the plasma, created in air by focused femtosecond laser pulses have been investigated as a function of the pump pulse energy and duration. For the air ionization the infrared (1030 nm) femtosecond (190–500 fs) Yb:KGW laser pulses of up to 1 mJ energy were used. Based on the Stark broadening of the oxygen-I 777.19 nm line we have found that after establishing a local equilibrium the density of laser-created plasma could exceed 1017 cm−3 with the electron temperature of over 5000 °C. Obtained results agree well with the results of previously reported measurements of the plasma density created by the femtosecond near-infrared Ti:sapphire laser pulses.

Influence of pressure on spectral broadening of femtosecond laser pulses in air

Spectral broadening is an important nonlinear effect during the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with air. In this paper, we experimentally study the dependence of spectral broadening on pressure and pulse energy. It is found that increasing both pressure and pulse energy can enhance the spectral intensity, while only increasing pressure leads to obvious blue shift of spectra, and the pulse energy has little effect on it. To get a better insight of the mechanism of spectral broadening, the numerical simulation relating the instantaneous frequency to the time dependent pulse intensity and time dependent plasma density in air is carried out. The results indicate that the plasma generation induced self-phase modulation which is related to the pressure plays an important role in blue shift of spectrum. Besides the transmission of the laser pulse is measured and decreases with pressure. It proves that the energy transfer of the laser pulse is promoted by pressure. This study will be helpful to understand a deeper physical mechanism of femtosecond filament induced supercontinnum generation in air.

The characteristics of the domain of multiple filamentation of femtosecond laser pulses in air were estimated based on the single filamentation model. As the single filamentation model, the diffraction-ray model is considered. It is based on the representation of a laser beam as a set of diffraction-ray tubes nested in each other that do not intersect in space and do not exchange energy with each other. In this situation changes in tubes shape and cross section during propagation demonstrate the effect of physical processes that occur with radiation in the medium. It is shown that the use of this model for interpreting experimental results and predicting effects is effective. In particular, it was demonstrated that the radius of small-scale intensity inhomogeneities in the profile of a centimeter laser beam, forming the domain of multiple filamentation of subterawatt femtosecond laser pulses, is several millimeters. The power in these inhomogeneities varies from several units to several tens of gigawatts. Telescoping the initial laser beam, leading to an increase in its radius, also expands the sizes of the initial small-scale intensity inhomogeneities and reduces the power contained in them. As a result of this, the coordinate of the filamentation beginning shifts along the path from the source of laser pulses. As the peak power in the beam increases, the length of the filaments and their number increase.

Response of NIH 3T3 Fibroblast Cells on Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on a 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si Multilayer System.

Ultrafast laser processing with the formation of periodic surface nanostructures on the 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayers is studied in order to the improve cell response. A novel nanocomposite structure in the form of 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si multilayer thin films, with satisfying mechanical properties and moderate biocompatibility, was deposited by ion sputtering on an Si substrate. The multilayer 15×(Ti/Zr)/Si thin films were modified by femtosecond laser pulses in air to induce the following modifications: (i) mixing of components inside of the multilayer structures, (ii) the formation of an ultrathin oxide layer at the surfaces, and (iii) surface nano-texturing with the creation of laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). The focus of this study was an examination of the novel Ti/Zr multilayer thin films in order to create a surface texture with suitable composition and structure for cell integration. Using the SEM and confocal microscopies of the laser-modified Ti/Zr surfaces with seeded cell culture (NIH 3T3 fibroblasts), it was found that cell adhesion and growth depend on the surface composition and morphological patterns. These results indicated a good proliferation of cells after two and four days with some tendency of the cell orientation along the LIPSSs.

Influence of tunnel ionization to third-harmonic generation of infrared femtosecond laser pulses in air

Here we present an experimental as well as theoretical study of third-harmonic generation in tightly focused femtosecond filaments in air at the wavelength of 1.5 ,upmu hbox {m}. At low intensities, longitudinal phase matching is dominating in the formation of 3rd harmonics, whereas at higher intensities locked X-waves are formed. We provide the arguments that the X-wave formation is governed mainly by the tunnel-like ionization dynamics rather than by the multiphoton one. Despite of this fact, the impact of the ionization-induced nonlinearity is lower than the one from bound–bound transitions at all intensities.

Rotational quantum beat lasing without inversion

In standard lasers, light amplification requires population inversion between an upper and a lower state to break the reciprocity between absorption and stimulated emission. However, in a medium prepared in a specific superposition state, quantum interference may fully suppress absorption while leaving stimulated emission intact, opening the possibility of lasing without inversion. Here we show that lasing without inversion arises naturally during propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air. It is triggered by the combination of molecular ionization and molecular alignment, both unavoidable in intense light fields. The effect could enable inversionless amplification of broadband radiation in many molecular gases, opening unusual opportunities for remote sensing.

Peculiarities of Propagation and Amplification of Ultrashort Terahertz Pulses in Strongly Nonequilibrium Plasma Channels Produced in Air by UV Femtosecond Laser Pulses during Multiquantum Ionization

The propagation of an ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulse in a nonequilibrium plasma channel produced by a UV femtosecond laser pulse in air is investigated theoretically. The analysis is carried out based on joint solution of the second-order wave equation and the Boltzmann kinetic equation in the binomial approximation for the electron velocity distribution function in the channel plasma. We assume that a THz pulse is quite weak and does not produce a reverse action on the electron energy spectrum in the channel plasma. It is shown that the plasma channel in air under a pressure of several atmospheres is a medium for effective amplification of ultrashort THz pulses in the frequency range up to several terahertz.

Estimation of the Characteristics of the Domain of Multiple Filamentation of Femtosecond Laser Pulses in Air Based on the Single Filamentation Model

Characteristics of the domain of multiple filamentation in air are estimated based on the numerical solution of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the single filamentation statement. The method of diffraction-ray tubes was used to describe the single filamentation of laser pulses. The efficiency of this method for interpreting experimental results and predicting effects is shown, which is important when planning experiments. The characteristic size of small-scale intensity inhomogeneities in the laser centimeter-radius beam profile, which induce a multiple filamentation of femtosecond pulses, is shown to be several millimeters. An increase in the initial laser beam radius during telescoping increases the sizes of the initial small-scale intensity inhomogeneities, and reduces their power. This leads to an increase in the distance to the start of filamentation. An increase in the initial beam power promotes the elongation of the filaments and increases their number.

Simultaneous generation of controllable double white light lasers by focusing an intense femtosecond laser pulse in air

We report on a simultaneous generation of double white light lasers through filamentation by focusing a femtosecond laser pulse. The appearance of the two white light lasers can be controlled by tilting the focusing lens. The spectral bandwidth and the pulse energy of the double white light lasers were controlled by tuning laser filamenting pulse energy and polarization. Two white light lasers with pulse energies of 1.54 mJ and 1.84 mJ, respectively, were generated with the pump laser energy of 7.43 mJ. Besides being beneficial in understanding the multiple white light lasers generation process through multiple filamentation and its control, the results are also valuable for white light laser-based applications.

Control of Multiple Filamentation of Femtosecond Laser Pulses in Air

The results are presented of experiments on controlling the characteristics of the multiple filamentation domain of femtosecond laser pulses along atmospheric paths via variations in the initial spatial focusing, beam radius, and pulse energy, as well as the optical field structure at the initial beam aperture.

Generation of Terahertz Radiation in Gas Media with Variable Structure when Focusing Two-Color Femtosecond Laser Pulses

The possibility of modulating the power of terahertz radiation generated in the laser plasma produced when focusing two-color femtosecond laser pulses in air, when using a gas jet directed to the plasma formation region, is demonstrated.
