How to Feed Cleft Patient?

ABSTRACTCleft lip and palate patients have all rights like other normal individuals, to enjoy the benefits of nourishment. Knowledge has to be there about the different feeding positions like straddle, dancer hand position along with the use of specially designed bottles and nipples. Parent's should be trained about the correct positions of feeding, in extreme of the cases in which parents are not able to follow these instructions, feeding obturators can be given.How to cite this article: Jindal MK, Khan SY. Prosthetic Rehabilitation of Oro-Nasal Defect

Maxillofacial defects may be due to congenital defect, trauma, tumor or infection. Among infections, fungal head and neck infections are common complication in patients with immunological or metabolic compromise. Cerebral extension of these infections often complicates the treatment plan. Treating these cases requires correction of the compromised state, local and systemic anti-fungal therapy and repeated radical debridement assisted by serial imaging. Following debridement, the resultant deformity can be corrected either surgically or prosthetically. Many factors are to be considered regarding the choice of the treatment. Here is a case report of a 55year old male diabetic patient with oro-nasal mycosis, where debridement resulted in a gross morbid defect of the dorsum of the nose and the hard palate. Prosthetic rehabilitation was carried out with separate nasal prosthesis and a palatal feeding obturator.

Feeding obturator appliance for an infant with cleft lip and palate

Clefts of the palate, alveolus and lip are some of the most frequently encountered anomalies of the face. This article presents a case report of a neonate with cleft lip and palate in whom a feeding obturator was delivered. This article demonstrates the indications, construction, and benefits of a palatal obturator in an 11-day-old infant with a bilateral cleft lip and palate.

A new technique of impression making for an obturator in cleft lip and palate patient

Cleft lip and palate is a birth defect occurring in the orofacial region. One of the immediate problems to be addressed in a newborn with this defect would be to aid in suckling and swallowing. Here we present a case of a 5-day-old infant with unilateral cleft lip and palate for whom feeding obturator was made by using a simplified impression technique to facilitate feeding.

A feeding obturator for a preterm baby with Pierre Robin sequence

The article describes a clinical and laboratory technique for the fabrication of a feeding obturator for a baby with Pierre Robin sequence. Emphasis is placed on the direct fabrication of a preliminary custom tray, preventing thermal trauma to the tissues, and overcoming the danger of airway obstruction or foreign body aspiration. The functional problems associated with a cleft palate and various methods to overcome them are also discussed.

Management of a feeding problem in an infant with cleft palate

Constructed by use of a simplified technic, the feeding obturator described is easily adjusted as the infant grows.
