Exploring the effects of COVID-19-related traumatic events on the mental health of university students in Brazil: A cross-sectional investigation

University students are vulnerable to mental health issues during their academic lives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, university students faced mental distress due to lockdowns and the transition to e-learning. However, it is not known whether these students were also affected specifically by COVID-19-related traumatic events. This study examined the impact of COVID-19-related traumatic events on 2277 university students from two federal institutions of higher education in Brazil. The university students completed an online questionnaire covering demographics, lifestyle habits, health characteristics, COVID-19-related traumatic events, and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. The results showed that an increased intensity of COVID-19-related traumatic events was positively associated with stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, and each specific type of event was associated with these symptoms. In addition, we found a negative association between these symptoms and male sex and age and a positive association with having or having had a history of cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, or mental disorders or another disease diagnosed by a physician. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the heightened risk of mental health issues in university students in the face of COVID-19-related traumatic events. Women, young people and people who have or have had a history of disease were the most vulnerable to mental health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sustainability Criteria and Practices in Electro-Electronic Purchases by Ifect In the Northern Brazil Region

Objective: this study aims to verify the adoption of sustainable rating criteria and practices in the acquisitions of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) from the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology (IFECT) in the north of Brazil. Theoretical Reference: The work is based on sustainable public acquisitions as an inducer of sustainable development, through the adoption of sustainability rating criteria and practices in acquisitions of public institutions. Method: This research was characterized as exploratory and has used a qualitative approach, to verify the adoption of rating criteria and sustainable practices in the acquisition of EEE from the IFECT, through a documental analysis in the documents of the planning phase of the acquisitions. Results and conclusion: data analysis revealed that the adoption of sustainability rating criteria and practices in IFECTs EEEs acquisitions is still very unsatisfactory. However, it showed a slight improvement between 2018 and 2021 and demonstrated that some IFECTs have more consolidated hiring plans. However, the need for improvements in all IFECTs, especially IFAM and IFPA. Implication of the research: the research makes explicit, through its results, the need to identify the factors that hinder the adoption of sustainability rating criteria and practices in public procurement, as well as the need for advances in this field. Originality/value: the research sought to demonstrate the important role and impact that public acquisitions has on sustainable development, in addition to the need to advance in the actions taken so that public sustainability policies are effective in procurement processes.

Os caminhos do entrincheiramento no serviço público: uma análise longitudinal em multigrupos

Abstract Little more than a decade separates this research from the first academic proposition of organizational entrenchment. To date, no longitudinal research has been carried out despite the recognized importance of this method for enriching studies in the behavioral field. This research aimed to identify characteristics of organizational entrenchment among civil servants at federal educational institutions in Brazil based on a longitudinal assessment of latent profiles. A quantitative and longitudinal survey was carried out with 1060 participants in the first collection. Descriptive analysis, comparison of means, and latent transition analysis were carried out. The civil servants in the sample showed low levels of entrenchment. Among the main findings are the stability of the profiles formed by the civil servants and the higher averages found in the dimensions of adjustments to social position and impersonal bureaucratic arrangements, reinforcing some cross-sectional theoretical findings. The results help to guide managers on the importance of internal factors for the entrenchment of civil servants and how attention to the items in the dimension of adjustments to social position can favor working with this bond. This research found that, over time, entrenchment is a stable bond.

Adhesion of federal institutions of higher education to a3p

The Environmental Agenda in Public Administration (A3P) is a program of the Ministry of the Environment to promote sustainable practices. Considering the importance of Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES) in the training of professionals and in the construction of citizenship, it is necessary to verify their socio-environmental commitments. Objective: to identify IFES 'adhesions to A3P and their representativeness by state. Develop an index to quantify the sustainable influence of these institutions. Method: A survey of Brazilian IFES was carried out, classifying them, according to adhesion to A3P (total, partial or absent). And, based on the number of IFES and population by state, an index was created to define their socio-environmental impact. Results: The results were presented through thematic maps, using conditional renderization. The state of Rio Grande do Norte stood out with 67% of adhesion, followed by Acre, Amazonas, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, Tocantins (50%), Pernambuco (40%) and Goiás (33%). In Southeast region, no IFES obtained total adhesion. Regarding sustainable reach (index), the state of Tocantins presented better results, accompanied by Rio Grande do Norte, Santa Catarina and Acre. One of the main factors that influenced the value of sustainable reach was campus / population ratio, realizing that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) behaves in an inversely proportional manner. Conclusion: IFES sustainability index can support the planning of public policies, since, when considering demographic, socioeconomic (GDP) parameters and reference to A3P, it allowed to outline the reality of each federative unit. Originality: This study shows the profile of the socio-environmental impact of IFES in Brazil.

The construction of knowledge about the field of institutional self-assessment in the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology: a literature review.

A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar como se estruturou o conhecimento na produção acadêmica, entre 2008 e 2020, a respeito da autoavaliação institucional nos Institutos Federais de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia. Para isso, realizou-se uma revisão de literatura sistematizada a respeito da temática, visando compreender o conhecimento a respeito da autoavaliação institucional, no âmbito da educação superior, profissional e tecnológica. Como resultados, verificamos que são parcos os estudos meta-avaliativos na área, que o interesse pela temática antecede a criação dos Institutos Federais e que os estudos focam, principalmente, na relação da autoavaliação com os processos de gestão e planejamento das IES e na atuação das CPAs.

Application to prevent pressure injury in elderly caregivers

Objective To develop and validate the content of a mobile application prototype on Pressure Injury (PI) Prevention for elderly caregivers. Methods Methodological study of prototype-type technological production in mobile application. The application development was guided by the Contextualized Instructional Design (CID) model. The content validation stage was carried out by seven teaching nurses of a technical course for elderly caregivers in a federal educational institution with the application of the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) instrument. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results The prototype, which was named LPPrev, contains information about the concept, staging, causes of LP, and main affecting sites, in addition to reminders to reposition the elderly in bed; registration of nutritional information, oral hydration, body and intimate hygiene, and guidance on preventive care is also possible. The content evaluation obtained 96.6% of agreement between professors, being considered a material of superior quality. Conclusion LPPrev is an application prototype properly structured according to the categories evaluated by the SAM, with relevant information for caregivers of bedridden and dependent elderly, contributing to theoretical knowledge and fundamental care in the prevention of injury by pressure, being prepared to move on to the other stages of the DIC model.

Quality of internal auditing in federal educational institutions: an analysis of the perception of internal audit members and senior management

PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the factors that influence the quality of internal audits in Brazilian federal educational institutions.Design/methodology/approachThe study consisted of a survey whose target participants were members of the internal audits and members of the senior management of Brazilian Federal Educational Institutions. The analyses included descriptive statistics of the sample, exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis.FindingsThe results showed that the internal audit functions, continuous improvement practices and relationship between internal and external auditors as factors had a positive impact on the internal audit quality dependent variable. The internal audit functions and continuous improvement practices as factors influenced both models that were created (audit members and senior management), whereas the relationship between internal and external auditors was only relevant to senior management. Organizational support and internal audit autonomy, on the other hand, were not statistically significant.Originality/valueConsidering the recent Brazilian research on internal auditing in Educational Institutions, this study differs from others in that it covered all the Universities (63), Federal Institutes (38), Federal Centers of Technological Education (2) and Colégio Pedro II. Another relevant issue refers to the target audience, addressing both the members of the internal audits (supply side) and the Senior Management (one of the main parties impacted by the work of the internal audits).

An Accessible Curriculum Proposal in Functions Content Based on the Universal Design for Learning

Background: As of 2017, with the approval of Law No. 13.409, which provides for exclusive places for people with disabilities in high school technical courses of federal educational institutions, the demands for permanence and success of students with disabilities, particularly intellectual, have become teachers’ focus. Objectives: This article seeks to present and reflect on a curriculum accessibility proposal aimed at the content of functions for students with intellectual disabilities in technical education. Design: Qualitative research of the research-action type with formation of a focus group and interpretive descriptive analysis of the results. Setting and participants: The research environment is a Federal Institute of the metropolitan region, and its methodology was the creation of a focus group of mathematics teachers for the discussion and elaboration of an accessible curriculum proposal in the content of functions for a student with Down syndrome enrolled in the first year of a technical course. Data collection and analysis: Data collection was obtained from the development of a sequence of activities applied to the student, and the analysis was inspired by interpretive descriptive analysis. Results: The results obtained point to the success of the curricular accessibility proposal based on the principles of the universal design for learning (UDL). Conclusions: The presentation of a curriculum from the perspective of curriculum accessibility for students with intellectual disabilities is promising to enable learning and develop desired skills in students.

Analyzes on Student Permanence in the Federal Institutes of Education

RESUMO Este artigo debate a permanência estudantil nos cursos técnicos subsequentes do Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina (IFSC) e mostra resultados de pesquisa realizada com professores e estudantes desses cursos, cujo objetivo foi: compreender as condições para a permanência estudantil, a partir da interlocução entre as suas condições de vida e as condições institucionais. Entende-se as condições de vida como produto da participação dos estudantes no processo de produção e reprodução social. As condições institucionais compreendem programas institucionais e ações desenvolvidas pelos cursos. Os resultados sinalizam encontros e desencontros entre as condições referidas e indicam a prioridade da responsabilidade institucional na produção de estratégias de permanência.

Occupational health promotion at a federal education institution: challenges and perspectives.

The Brazilian Federal Government developed the Occupational Health and Safety policy for the Federal Public Servant, supported by the following axes: health surveillance and promotion, health assistance for the civil servant, and medical surveillance expertise. As a federal public institution, the Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais (Instituto Federal do Norte de Minas Gerais) is responsible for implementing this policy. This study aimed to identify the challenges and perspectives associated with the health care provided to the servants of the Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais. This was a documentary and field study, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, conducted using documentary research and semi-structured interviews. The collected data were submitted to descriptive and categorical content analyses. The Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais still presents several problems in the consolidation and structuring of the Occupational Health and Safety policy for the Federal Public Servant. Among the main obstacles faced are the lack of governmental and institutional support and the precariousness of financial and human resources, mainly directed to the axis of health promotion and surveillance. The institution plans to conduct periodic medical examinations, the establishment of Internal Health Commissions for Public Servants, and the implementation of a mental health program. It is expected that the Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais will be able to perform better on the development of health policies and programs for its workers.

Evaluating absenteeism due to illness in federal educational institutions: analysis of data on staff leave due to sick leave at the federal universities of Pelotas and Rio Grande

Resumo Objetivo: Analisar as características dos afastamentos por doença entre servidores de duas universidades públicas do extremo sul do Brasil. Método: Foram analisados os afastamentos por doença, concedidos por licença médica ocorridos entre janeiro de 2015 a dezembro de 2019. As universidades possuem características semelhantes no que se refere a localização, contingente de servidores e alunos atendidos. Os indicadores foram baseados no número de licenças apresentadas, número de trabalhadores em licença e dias de trabalho perdidos. Foram analisados os afastamentos por categoria profissional, faixa etária, gênero, local de trabalho e doença que levou ao afastamento. Resultados: Ambas as universidades apresentam perfil semelhante de adoecimento dos servidores, sendo os transtornos psiquiátricos e as doenças osteomusculares as mais prevalentes. As categorias profissionais mais acometidas por doença são os profissionais da área da saúde e educação. O absenteísmo é mais presente entre as mulheres. Conclusão: Os resultados do estudo apontam a necessidade de discutir estratégias que resultem em mudanças na forma de organização do trabalho, promoção à saúde e qualidade de vida dos trabalhadores, visando minimizar os impactos que o adoecimento traz aos trabalhadores e às instituições.

Suicide risk in high school students: who are the most vulnerable groups?

ABSTRACTObjective:To investigate the prevalence and factors associated with suicide risk among high school students from a federal educational institution in Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS).Methods:This is a cross-sectional study based on a census of students (n=510) enrolled in IFRS, campus Rio Grande, in the second half of 2019. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Suicide risk was measured with the instrument Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview, and data were analyzed using Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment.Results:The prevalence of high suicide risk was 17.3% (95% confidence interval — 95%CI 14.0–20.0), with the following independent associated factors: female gender, higher socioeconomic status, alcohol consumption, less social support, attempt to lose weight, self-harm behavior, and increased risk of depression, anxiety, and stress.Conclusions:One in six students showed a high suicide risk. The identification of factors associated with the outcome is useful for detecting the most severe cases and referring them to specialized care.

Inclusão de estudantes com deficiência no Ensino Superior brasileiro

Abstract In 2016, Brazil approved Law nº 13,409, determining quotas for individuals with disabilities in post-secondary non-tertiary and tertiary education courses of federal educational institutions. Since 1995, National Institute for Educational Studies and Surveys/Ministry of Education (Inep/MEC) has collected data on university courses and student enrollment with the Higher Education Census. Since 2009, this census lists and individually identifies with a code generated by Inep all students enrolled in Higher Education courses, with various information, including whether they have or not any disabilities. Few studies on students with disabilities in tertiary education have been conducted exploring this extensive database. The current study outlines a profile of students with disabilities who joined the system from 2009 to 2019, last year when it was possible to obtain the information. Due to the Brazilian General Data Protection Law, Inep discontinued the publication of microdata per student, which allowed the tabulations presented here. Not only was this done, but the microdata used in this text was also removed from the page. The students with disability showed a different profile when compared to other students; for example, with respect to the distribution by gender, age and choice of course/area. Obviously, institutions that offer some type of assistive technology and/or technical help seem to attract more students with disability. The largest number of students with disability present physical disabilities, followed by vision-impairment, both increasing in time. The total contingent of students with disability more than doubled in the period under scrutiny, with an average growth rate of 9.0% p.y., but percentage of students with disability in Higher Education is still smaller when compared to the total number of students. The growth trend shows that the inclusion process in tertiary education is still beginning.

Redução da Jornada de Trabalho como Instrumento Político, de Gestão e de Controle

Abstract Reduced working time is a topic widely discussed in organization studies, mainly its benefits. However, the literature does not deeply emphasize the power and control dynamics oftentimes observed in its implementation by organizations. The aim of the current article is to help fulfilling this gap by exploring different concepts about reduced working time in place in Brazilian federal educational institutions that have adopted the thirty-hour workweek as standard for their technical-administrative employees. A case study was carried out through observation, documental analysis and eighteen semi-structured interviews conducted with both workers subjected to shorter working hours and managers working under the conventional forty-hour week standard. Based on the results, despite its notable benefits for the work/life balance, the reduced working time has three interrelated purposes, namely: political, management, and control instrument. This research made it possible to reveal how management and control instruments can be incorporated to a policy focused on reduced working time, to highlight the complexity and controversy of power relation, as well as contributed to organization studies, based on rationalization about life and its temporal dimensions.

Directions for the Development of Bibliographic Electronic Resources of a Modern University of Culture

The emergence of new forms of library and information services, the expansion of their range, the simultaneous provision of secondary and primary information, the reduction of the time frames for fulfilling a user’s request – these and other trends have affected the functioning of bibliographic electronic resources (BER). The purpose of the article is to identify factors influencing the development of BER in a modern university of culture, increasing the efficiency of their provision. The results of the study “Bibliographic resources of the modern library of the university of culture: state and development prospects” formed its basis. In total, 18 libraries of federal state budgetary educational institutions of higher education were studied. The analysis showed that the main components of improving the process of providing bibliographic electronic resources in the conditions of a modern university can be the following: the existence of a library development strategy; bibliographic electronic resources monitoring; organization and updating the reference and search apparatus; improving remote access to BER; resource integration; efficient use of automated library and information systems; filling the library site; service orientation and personalization of service; forming the information culture of the user and improvement of the professional level of library specialists. Of particular importance is the strengthening of the teaching and navigation functions of libraries.

Evaluation of a process for the Experimental Development of Data Mining, AI and Data Science applications aligned with the Strategic Planning

Context: The Big Data phenomenon has imposed maturity on companies regarding the exploration of their data, as a prerogative to obtain valuable insights into their clients and the power of analysis to guide decision-making processes. Therefore, a general approach that describes how to extract knowledge for the execution of the business strategy needs to be established. Purpose: The purpose of this research paper is to introduce and evaluate the implementation of a process for the experimental development of Data Mining (DM), AI and Data Science applications aligned with the strategic planning. Method: A case study with the proposed process was conducted in a federal educational institution. Results: The results generated evidence showing that it is possible to integrate a strategic alignment approach, an experimental method, and a methodology for the development of DM applications. Conclusion: Data Mining (DM) and Data Science (DS) applications also present the risks of other Information Systems, and the adoption of strategy-driven and scientific method processes are critical success factors. Moreover, it was possible to conclude that the application of the scientific method was facilitated, besides being an important tool to ensure the quality, reproducibility and transparency of intelligent applications. In conclusion, the process needs to be mapped to foment and guide the strategic alignment.

Educational Institutions of Islamabad during COVID-19 Pandemics: A Reflective Study

Purpose: The spread of Novel Corona virus (COVID-19) affected all fields of life along with education across the globe. After increase in positive cases of COVID-19, Federal Government of Pakistan announced the closure of educational institutions all over the country in the mid of March, 2020, as a protective measure for students and staff members. Due to complete lockdown in the country, internal and board exams of secondary school certificate (SSC) and higher secondary school certificate (HSSC) cancelled. Students got promotion without annual examination into next classes based on previous performance. This study investigated the blow of COVID- 19 on the students of government educational institutions of Islamabad along with the response of Government on the issue.
 Methodology: This was a qualitative study with case study approach. Target population was all the students and teachers/head teachers from public High and Higher secondary schools in Islamabad Pakistan. Random convenient sampling technique used for collection of data. Semi structured interviews were conducted telephonically for data. After completion, interviews/ responses transcribed and analyzed.
 Findings: Results of this research have revealed that this pandemic has badly affected the Federal educational institutions of Islamabad because of confinement of students in homes. Generally, students in government schools are from middle and lower middle class. They have no/limited access to internet and technology at home. It has widened the gap between privileged and none privileged/less privileged students due to inequality in access to internet and unavailability of gadgets in unbiased access to quality education. These factors compelled the Government to launch Tele-School on PTV (Pakistan Television) channel that started its regular transmission on 14 April 2020. Basic aim was to give assistance to all students confined at home. Schools opened after expected peak time I.e. 15 September. Students were allowed to join the regular school in small groups on alternate day. Strict precautionary measures, like social distancing, use of disinfectants in and around the premises/humans and provision of regular medical assistance carried out. Data revealed that the whole system was overburdened but the steps taken caused the far less damage than expected to the students.
 Recommendation: The study recommend that Tele-school channel should continue even after pandemic. It is beneficial for students to learn during closure of schools. It is also helpful to the students of remote areas, with no or least of internet facilities. Time has proven that the low-income government institutions have tackled the situation very well under the visionary umbrella of Federal Directorate of Education Islamabad Pakistan.

Focusing on the evaluation policies, regulation and supervision of federal institutes of education, science and technology from normative acts

O objetivo do texto é averiguar atos histórico-normativos de avaliação, de regulação e de supervisão direcionados aos Institutos Federais de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia (IFs), a partir da criação do Sinaes. O trabalho é de cunho teórico-documental, com uso de estudo bibliométrico e análise textual discursiva no levantamento de dados. Conclui-se que as políticas avaliativas e regulatórias implementadas não são direcionadas e nem planejadas para especificidades acadêmicas, administrativas e organizacionais de IFs, além de incidirem sobre eles as mesmas regulamentações de universidades federais.

Effects of Emotional Intelligence on the Relationship Between Individual and Contextual Factors on the Quality of Internal Auditing in Federal Educational Institutions in Brazil

This research investigated the effects of individual and contextual factors on the quality of internal audit moderated by emotional intelligence. The research was operationalized from a research instrument consisting of 39 questions, answered by 93 internal auditors from Federal Educational Institutions in Brazil. Descriptive statistics and Structural Equation Modeling were applied. Results showed that individual factors positively and significantly affect the quality of the audit. The work resources, although considered important, did not influence the quality of the audit, unlike the contextual factor of time budget pressure, which affects it positively and significantly. Regarding the moderation of emotional intelligence in individual factors and contextual factors, this was not supported. Thus, concerning the originality, research on the influence of emotional intelligence on the results of the work of the internal auditor is recent in the literatures, this study therefore, boosts the ex ante sources and also support the regulating bodies and practitioners. Finally, as a suggestion for future research, it is recommended that the studies reach the population not investigated in this study, being internal auditors from other sectors of the economy, external auditors or even auditors from the private sector.

Absenteeism-disease in university employees: a cross-sectional study of the reasons for leave from 2013 to 2018

The Server's Integrated Health Subsystem is used to register health treatment licenses in the Federal Public Service, enabling knowledge about absenteeism-illness. To subsidize health promotion actions, it is intended to know its motivating causes in a Federal Education Institution in Minas Gerais. A cross-sectional study on leave between 2013 and 2018 was carried out. The variables were: position, sex, number of days off and the motivating code of the leave. Descriptive and inferential analyzes were performed using Poisson Regression. The main motivations found were: musculoskeletal disorders, followed by mental health in the group of professors and respiratory disorders in the group of administrative technicians, among whom, technicians up to 50 years old are associated with sick leave due to respiratory tract disorders and civil servants over 50 years old for musculoskeletal reasons. There was no difference in age with regard to mental disorder in this group. The static ergonomic risk associated with respiratory and psychic outcomes, and the risk due to dynamic activities in the absence of musculoskeletal disorders. Based on the data presented, it is possible to propose measures for Health Policy, aimed at improving the environment and work process, minimizing its risks and protecting the health of the employee.
