Far-ultraviolet to Far-infrared Spectral Energy Distribution Modeling of the Star Formation History across M31

Our neighboring galaxy M31 has been recently surveyed at the far- and near-ultraviolet (FUV and NUV) with the UVIT telescope on AstroSat, which provides unprecedented sensitivity to young stellar populations. Here the UVIT data are supplemented with optical data, near-infrared (IR) data (Spitzer), and mid- and far-IR data (Herschel). The observations are processed to obtain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 73 regions covering M31. The SEDs are modeled using the Cigale SED fitting code with old and young stellar populations. The old stellar population has an age of 12 Gyr across M31 but has longer formation times at further distances from the center. Significant dependences on the position of dust extinction, dust emission, and young stellar population properties are found. Across M31, there are regions with a low-age (≲100 Myr) young population and regions with an intermediate-age (∼1 Gyr) young population. The mass in the young population has declined by a factor of ∼10 for ages 800–100 Myr ago but has increased again for ages ≲100 Myr. This indicates that cold gas available for star formation has been changing over the past Gyr, whether it is caused by a changing merger rate, changing gas infall, or changes in the gas reservoir in M31. We find that the dust luminosity, based on far-IR observations, is driven by the youngest stars, which are primarily measured in the FUV and NUV bands.

Cosmic Sands. II. Challenges in Predicting and Measuring High-z Dust Temperatures

In the current era of high-z galaxy discovery with JWST and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, our ability to study the stellar populations and interstellar medium conditions in a diverse range of galaxies at Cosmic Dawn has rapidly improved. At the same time, the need to understand the current limitations in modeling galaxy formation processes and physical properties in order to interpret these observations is critical. Here, we study the challenges in modeling galaxy dust temperatures, both in the context of forward modeling galaxy spectral properties from a hydrodynamical simulation and via backwards modeling galaxy physical properties from mock observations of far-infrared dust emission. Using the simba model for galaxy formation combined with powderday radiative transfer, we can accurately predict the evolution of dust at high redshift, though several aspects of the model are essentially free parameters (dust composition, subresolution dust in star-forming regions) that dull the predictive power of the model dust temperature distributions. We also highlight the uncertainties in the backwards modeling methods, where we find the commonly used models and assumptions to fit far-infrared spectral energy distributions and infer dust temperatures (e.g., single temperature, optically thin modified blackbody) largely fail to capture the complexity of high-z dusty galaxies. We caution that conclusions inferred from both simulations—limited by resolution and post-processing techniques—and observations—limited by sparse data and simplistic model parameterizations—are susceptible to unique and nuanced uncertainties that can limit the usefulness of current high-z dust measurements.

New constraints on the molecular gas content of a z ∼ 8 galaxy from JVLA CO(J = 2–1) observations

ABSTRACT As the primary fuel for star formation, molecular gas plays a key role in galaxy evolution. A number of techniques have been used for deriving the mass of molecular reservoirs in the early Universe (e.g. [C ii]158 µm, [C i], dust continuum), but the standard approach of CO-based estimates has been limited to a small number of galaxies due to the intrinsic faintness of the line. We present Jansky Very Large Array observations of the $z\sim \, 8.31$ galaxy MACS0416_Y1, targeting CO(2-1) and rest-frame radio continuum emission, which result in upper limits on both quantities. Adding our continuum limit to the published far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution, we find a small non-thermal contribution to the FIR emission, a low-dust mass (${\rm {\log }}_{10}({\rm {\mathit{ M}}}_{\rm {D}}/{\rm M}_{\odot })\sim 5$), and an abnormally high-dust temperature (${\rm \mathit{ T}}_{\rm D}\gtrsim \, 90\, \mathrm{ K}$) that may indicate a recent starburst. Assuming a low metallicity (Z/Z⊙ ∼ 0.25), we find evidence for $M_{{\rm {H}}_2}, \mathrm{ CO}\lesssim \, 10^{10}$ M⊙, in agreement with previous [C ii] investigations ($M_{{\rm {H}}_2},[\mathrm{ C}\,\small{\rm II}]\, \sim \, 10^{9.6}$ M⊙). Upcoming JWST observations of this source will result in a precise determination of Z, enabling better constraints and an unprecedented view of the gaseous reservoir in this primordial starburst galaxy.

The ALMA REBELS survey: obscured star formation in massive Lyman-break galaxies at z = 4–8 revealed by the IRX–β and M⋆ relations

ABSTRACT We investigate the degree of dust obscured star formation in 49 massive (log10(M⋆/M⊙) > 9) Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 6.5–8 observed as part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Reionization Era Bright Emission Line Survey (REBELS) large program. By creating deep stacks of the photometric data and the REBELS ALMA measurements we determine the average rest-frame ultraviolet (UV), optical, and far-infrared (FIR) properties which reveal a significant fraction (fobs = 0.4–0.7) of obscured star formation, consistent with previous studies. From measurements of the rest-frame UV slope, we find that the brightest LBGs at these redshifts show bluer (β ≃ −2.2) colours than expected from an extrapolation of the colour–magnitude relation found at fainter magnitudes. Assuming a modified blackbody spectral energy distribution (SED) in the FIR (with dust temperature of $T_{\rm d} = 46\, {\rm K}$ and βd = 2.0), we find that the REBELS sources are in agreement with the local ‘Calzetti-like’ starburst Infrared-excess (IRX)–β relation. By re-analysing the data available for 108 galaxies at z ≃ 4–6 from the ALMA Large Program to Investigate C+ at Early Times (ALPINE) using a consistent methodology and assumed FIR SED, we show that from z ≃ 4–8, massive galaxies selected in the rest-frame UV have no appreciable evolution in their derived IRX–β relation. When comparing the IRX–M⋆ relation derived from the combined ALPINE and REBELS sample to relations established at z < 4, we find a deficit in the IRX, indicating that at z > 4 the proportion of obscured star formation is lower by a factor of ≳ 3 at a given a M⋆. Our IRX–β results are in good agreement with the high-redshift predictions of simulations and semi-analytic models for z ≃ 7 galaxies with similar stellar masses and star formation rates.

Surveying the Giant H ii Regions of the Milky Way with SOFIA: V. DR7 and K3-50

We present our fifth set of results from our mid-infrared imaging survey of Milky Way Giant H ii (GH ii) regions with our detailed analysis of DR7 and K3-50. We obtained 20/25 and 37 μm imaging maps of both regions using the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy. We investigate the multiscale properties of DR7 and K3-50 using our data in conjunction with previous multiwavelength observations. Near- to far-infrared spectral energy distributions of individual compact infrared sources were constructed and fitted with massive young stellar object (MYSO) models. We find eight out of the ten (80%) compact sources in K3-50 and three out of the four (75%) sources in DR7 are likely to be MYSOs. We derived luminosity-to-mass ratios of the extended radio subregions of DR7 and K3-50 to estimate their relative ages. The large spread in evolutionary state for the subregions in K3-50 likely indicates that the star-forming complex has undergone multiple star-forming events separated more widely in time, whereas the smaller spread in DR7 likely indicates the star formation subregions are more co-eval. DR7 and K3-50 have Lyman continuum photon rates just above the formal threshold criterion for being categorized as a GH ii region (1050 photons s−1) but with large enough errors that this classification is uncertain. By measuring other observational characteristics in the infrared, we find that K3-50 has properties more akin to previous bona fide GH ii regions we have studied, whereas DR7 has values more like those of the non-GH ii regions we have previously studied.

An empirical study of dust properties at the earliest epochs

ABSTRACT We present an empirical analysis of the properties of dust-continuum emission in a sample of 17 galaxies in the early Universe (4 < z < 8) with well-sampled far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) compiled from the literature. We place our results into context by self-consistently comparing to samples of nearby star-forming galaxies, luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), and quasars. With the exception of two sources, we find no significant evolution in the dust emissivity index across cosmic time, measuring a consistent value of βIR = 1.8 ± 0.3 at z > 4, suggesting that the effective dust properties do not change dramatically for most galaxies. Despite having comparable stellar masses, we find the high-redshift galaxies to be similar to, or even more extreme than, LIRGs in the Herschel (U)LIRG Survey, where (U)LIRG refers to (ultra-)LIRG, sample in terms of dust temperature ($T_\text{dust} \gt 40 \, \mathrm{K}$) and infrared (IR) luminosity ($L_\text{IR} \gt 10^{11} \, \mathrm{L_\odot }$). We find that the dust temperature evolves mildly towards high redshift, though the LIRGs and quasars exhibit elevated temperatures indicating a more efficient and/or additional heating mechanism. Where available, we compare stellar mass estimates to our inferred dust masses, whose degeneracy with dust temperature can only be mitigated with a well-constrained SED. In merely half of the cases, the dust yield may be explained by supernovae alone, with four sources ($44{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) significantly exceeding a highly optimistic yield where Mdust ≈ 0.01M*. We discuss possible explanations for this apparent inconsistency and potential observational biases in the measurements of the dust properties of high-redshift galaxies, including in the current IR-bright sample.

The long and the short of it: the benefits and leverage of ultraviolet-radio galaxy fitting

ABSTRACT Traditionally, the far-ultraviolet (FUV) to far-infrared (FIR) and radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies have been considered separately despite the common physical process shaping them. In this work, we explore the utility of simultaneously fitting FUV-radio SEDs using an extended version of the ProSpect SED fitting code considering contributions from both free–free and synchrotron emission. We use a small sample of galaxies from the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) and the Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel (KINGFISH) where high-quality and robust FUV-radio data are available to provide an ideal sample for testing a radio extension of ProSpect. As the parametrization of the radio extension links the radio continuum to the FIR emission, we explore the benefit of using radio continuum measurements as a constraint on the energy balance between dust attenuation and emission. We find that for situations where mid-IR–FIR photometry is unavailable, including a 1.4 GHz continuum measurement allows for improved accuracy in recovered star formation rates and dust luminosities of galaxies reducing the median uncertainty by 0.1 and 0.2 dex, respectively. We also demonstrate that incorporating 3 and 10 GHz measurements allows for further constraint on the energy balance and therefore the star formation rate and dust luminosity. This demonstrates the advantage of extending FUV–FIR SED fitting techniques to radio frequencies, especially as we move into an era where FIR surveys will remain limited and radio data become abundant (i.e. with the SKA and precursors).

Comparison of modified black-body fits for the estimation of dust optical depths in interstellar clouds

Context. When dust far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are fitted with a single modified black body (MBB), the optical depths tend to be underestimated. This is caused by temperature variations, and fits with several temperature components could lead to smaller errors. Aims. We want to quantify the performance of the standard model of a single MBB in comparison with some multi-component models. We are interested in both the accuracy and computational cost. Methods. We examine some cloud models relevant for interstellar medium studies. Synthetic spectra are fitted with a single MBB, a sum of several MBBs, and a sum of fxed spectral templates, but keeping the dust opacity spectral index fixed. Results. When observations are used at their native resolution, the beam convolution becomes part of the fitting procedure. This increases the computational cost, but the analysis of large maps is still feasible with direct optimisation or even with Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. Compared to the single MBB fits, multi-component models can show significantly smaller systematic errors, at the cost of more statistical noise. The χ2 values of the fits are not a good indicator of the accuracy of the τ estimates, due to the potentially dominant role of the model errors. The single-MBB model also remains a valid alternative if combined with empirical corrections to reduce its bias. Conclusions. It is technically feasible to fit multi-component models to maps of millions of pixels. However, the SED model and the priors need to be selected carefully, and the model errors can only be estimated by comparing alternative models.

Dust contribution to the panchromatic galaxy emission

ABSTRACT We have developed a pipeline called mentari to generate the far-ultraviolet to far-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of galaxies from the Dusty SAGEsemi-analytic galaxy formation model. Dusty SAGEincorporates dust-related processes directly on top of the basic ingredients of galaxy formation like gas infall, cooling, star formation, feedback, and mergers. We derive a physically motivated attenuation model from the computed dust properties in Dusty SAGE, so each galaxy has a self-consistent set of attenuation parameters based on the complicated dust physics that occurred across the galaxy’s assembly history. Then, we explore several dust emission templates to produce infrared spectra. Our results show that a physically-motivated attenuation model is better for obtaining a consistent multiwavelength description of galaxy formation and evolution, compared to using a constant attenuation. We compare our predictions with a compilation of observations and find that the fiducial model is in reasonable agreement with: (i) the observed z= 0 luminosity functions from the far-ultraviolet to far-infrared simultaneously, and hence (ii) the local cosmic SED in the same range, (iii) the rest-frame K-band luminosity function across 0 < z< 3, and (iv) the rest-frame far-ultraviolet luminosity function across 0 < z< 1. Our model underproduces the far-ultraviolet emission at z= 2 and z= 3, which can be improved by altering the AGN feedback and dust processes in Dusty SAGE, However, this combination thus worsens the agreement at z= 0, which suggests that more detailed treatment of such processes is required.

Dual constraints with ALMA: new [O iii] 88-μm and dust-continuum observations reveal the ISM conditions of luminous LBGs at z ∼ 7

ABSTRACT We present new [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$] 88-$\mu \mathrm{{m}}$ observations of five bright z ∼ 7 Lyman-break galaxies spectroscopically confirmed by ALMA through [${\rm C\, {\small II}}$] 158 $\mu \mathrm{{m}}$, unlike recent [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$] detections where Lyman α was used. This nearly doubles the sample of Epoch of Reionization galaxies with robust (5σ) [${\rm C\, {\small II}}$] and [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$] detections. We perform a multiwavelength comparison with new deep HST images of the rest-frame UV, whose compact morphology aligns well with [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$] tracing ionized gas. In contrast, we find more spatially extended [${\rm C\, {\small II}}$] emission likely produced in neutral gas, as indicated by an [${\rm N\, {\small II}}$] 205-$\mu \mathrm{{m}}$ non-detection in one source. We find a correlation between the optical ${[{\rm O\, {\small III}}]}+ {\mathrm{H\,\beta }}$ equivalent width and [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$]/[${\rm C\, {\small II}}$], as seen in local metal-poor dwarf galaxies. cloudy models of a nebula of typical density harbouring a young stellar population with a high-ionization parameter adequately reproduce the observed lines. Surprisingly, however, our models fail to reproduce the strength of [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$] 88-$\mu \mathrm{{m}}$, unless we assume an α/Fe enhancement and near-solar nebular oxygen abundance. On spatially resolved scales, we find [${\rm O\, {\small III}}$]/[${\rm C\, {\small II}}$] shows a tentative anticorrelation with infrared excess, LIR/LUV, also seen on global scales in the local Universe. Finally, we introduce the far-infrared spectral energy distribution fitting code mercurius to show that dust-continuum measurements of one source appear to favour a low dust temperature and correspondingly high dust mass. This implies a high stellar metallicity yield and may point towards the need of dust production or grain-growth mechanisms beyond supernovae.

Cyanopolyyne line survey towards high-mass star-forming regions with TMRT

Context. Cyanopolyynes (HC2n+1 N, n = 1,2,3), which are the linear carbon chain molecules, are precursors for the prebiotic synthesis of simple amino acids. They are important for understanding prebiotic chemistry and may be good tracers of the star formation sequence. Aims. We aim to search for cyanopolyynes in high-mass star-forming regions (HMSFRs) at possibly different evolutionary stages, investigate the evolution of HC3N and its relation with shock tracers, and detect the existence of HC5N and HC7N in HMSFRs with a formed protostar. Methods. We carried out a cyanopolyyne line survey towards a large sample of HMSFRs using the Shanghai Tian Ma 65 m Radio Telescope (TMRT). Our sample consisted of 123 targets taken from the TMRT C band line survey. It included three kinds of sources, namely those with detection of the 6.7 GHz CH3OH maser alone, with detection of the radio recombination line (RRL) alone, and with detection of both (hereafter referred to as Maser-only, RRL-only, and Maser-RRL sources, respectively). For our sample with detection of cyanopolyynes, their column densities were derived using the rotational temperature measured from the NH3 lines. We constructed and fitted the far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distributions (SED; obtained from the Herschel FIR data and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment data at 870 µm) of our HC3N sources. Moreover, by analysing the relation between HC3N and other shock tracers, we also investigate whether HC3N is a good tracer of shocks. Results. We detected HC3N in 38 sources, HC5N in 11 sources, and HC7N in G24.790+0.084, with the highest detection rate being found for Maser-RRL sources and a very low detection rate found for RRL-only sources. The mean column density of HC3N was found to be (1.75 ± 0.42) × 1013, (2.84 ± 0.47) × 1013, and (0.82 ± 0.15) × 1013 cm−2 for Maser-only, Maser-RRL, and RRL-only sources, respectively. Based on a fit of the FIR SED, we derive their dust temperatures, H2 column densities, and abundances of cyanopolyynes relative to H2. The mean relative abundance of HC3N was found to be (1.22 ± 0.52) × 10−10 for Maser-only, (5.40 ± 1.45) × 10−10 for Maser-RRL, and (1.65 ± 1.50) × 10−10 for RRL-only sources, respectively. Conclusions. The detection rate, the column density, and the relative abundance of HC3N increase from Maser-only to Maser-RRL sources and decrease from Maser-RRL to RRL-only sources. This trend is consistent with the proposed evolutionary trend of HC3N under the assumption that our Maser-only, Maser-RRL, and RRL-only sources correspond to massive young stellar objects, ultracompact H ii regions, and normal classical H ii regions, respectively. Our detections enlarge the sample of HC3N in HMSFRs and support the idea that unsaturated complex organic molecules can exist in HMSFRs with a formed protostar. Furthermore, a statistical analysis of the integrated line intensity and column density of HC3N and shock-tracing molecules (SiO, H2CO) enabled us to find positive correlations between them. This suggests that HC3N may be another tracer of shocks, and should therefore be the subject of further observations and corresponding chemical simulations. Our results indirectly support the idea that the neutral-neutral reaction between C2H2 and CN is the dominant formation pathway of HC3N.

On the simultaneous modelling of dust and stellar populations for interpretation of galaxy properties

ABSTRACT The physical properties of galaxies are encoded within their spectral energy distribution and require comparison with models to be extracted. These models must contain a synthetic stellar population and, where infrared data are to be used, also consider prescriptions for energy reprocessing and re-emission by dust. While many such models have been constructed, there are few analyses of the impact of stellar population model choice on derived dust parameters, or vice versa. Here, we apply a simple framework to compare the impact of these choices, combining three commonly used stellar population synthesis models and three dust emission models. We compare fits to the ultraviolet to far-infrared spectral energy distributions of a validation sample of infrared-luminous galaxies. We find that including different physics, such as binary stellar evolution, in the stellar synthesis model can introduce biases and uncertainties in the derived parameters of the dust and stellar emission models, largely due to differences in the far-ultraviolet emission available for reprocessing. This may help to reconcile the discrepancy between the cosmic star formation rate and stellar mass density histories. Notably the inclusion of a dusty stellar birth cloud component in the dust emission model provides more flexibility in accommodating the stellar population model, as its re-emission is highly sensitive to the ultraviolet radiation field spectrum and density. Binary populations favour a longer birth cloud dissipation time-scale than is found when assuming only single star population synthesis.

Radio Spectral Energy Distributions for Single Massive Star Winds with Free–Free and Synchrotron Emission

The mass-loss rates from single massive stars are high enough to form radio photospheres at large distances from the stellar surface, where the wind is optically thick to (thermal) free–free opacity. Here we calculate the far-infrared, millimeter, and radio band spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that can result from the combination of free–free processes and synchrotron emission, to explore the conditions for nonthermal SEDs. Simplifying assumptions are adopted in terms of scaling relations for the magnetic field strength and the spatial distribution of relativistic electrons. The wind is assumed to be spherically symmetric, and we consider the effect of Razin suppression on the synchrotron emission. Under these conditions, long-wavelength SEDs with synchrotron emission can be either more steep or more shallow than the canonical asymptotic power-law SED from a nonmagnetic wind. When nonthermal emission is present, the resultant SED shape is generally not a power law; however, the variation in the slope can change slowly with wavelength. Consequently, over a limited range of wavelengths, the SED can masquerade as approximately a power law. While most observed nonthermal long-wavelength spectra are associated with binarity, synchrotron emission can have only a mild influence on single-star SEDs, requiring finer levels of wavelength sampling for the detection of the effect.

ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey: ALMA-Herschel Joint Study of Lensed Dusty Star-forming Galaxies across z ≃ 0.5 – 6

We present an ALMA-Herschel joint analysis of sources detected by the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS) at 1.15 mm. Herschel/PACS and SPIRE data at 100–500 μm are deblended for 180 ALMA sources in 33 lensing cluster fields that are detected either securely (141 sources; in our main sample) or tentatively at S/N ≥ 4 with cross-matched HST/Spitzer counterparts, down to a delensed 1.15 mm flux density of ∼0.02 mJy. We performed far-infrared spectral energy distribution modeling and derived the physical properties of dusty star formation for 125 sources (109 independently) that are detected at >2σ in at least one Herschel band. A total of 27 secure ALCS sources are not detected in any Herschel bands, including 17 optical/near-IR-dark sources that likely reside at z = 4.2 ± 1.2. The 16th, 50th, and 84th percentiles of the redshift distribution are 1.15, 2.08, and 3.59, respectively, for ALCS sources in the main sample, suggesting an increasing fraction of z ≃ 1 − 2 galaxies among fainter millimeter sources (f 1150 ∼ 0.1 mJy). With a median lensing magnification factor of , ALCS sources in the main sample exhibit a median intrinsic star formation rate of M ⊙ yr−1, lower than that of conventional submillimeter galaxies at similar redshifts by a factor of ∼3. Our study suggests weak or no redshift evolution of dust temperature with L IR < 1012 L ⊙ galaxies within our sample at z ≃ 0 − 2. At L IR > 1012 L ⊙, the dust temperatures show no evolution across z ≃ 1–4 while being lower than those in the local universe. For the highest-redshift source in our sample (z = 6.07), we can rule out an extreme dust temperature (>80 K) that was reported for MACS0416 Y1 at z = 8.31.

Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS): identification of AGN through SED fitting and the evolution of the bolometric AGN luminosity function

ABSTRACT Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are typically identified through radio, mid-infrared, or X-ray emission or through the presence of broad and/or narrow emission lines. AGN can also leave an imprint on a galaxy’s spectral energy distribution (SED) through the re-processing of photons by the dusty torus. Using the SED fitting code ProSpect with an incorporated AGN component, we fit the far-ultraviolet to far-infrared SEDs of ∼494 000 galaxies in the D10-COSMOS field and ∼230 000 galaxies from the GAMA survey. By combining an AGN component with a flexible star formation and metallicity implementation, we obtain estimates for the AGN luminosities, stellar masses, star formation histories, and metallicity histories for each of our galaxies. We find that ProSpect can identify AGN components in 91 per cent of galaxies pre-selected as containing AGN through narrow-emission line ratios and the presence of broad lines. Our ProSpect-derived AGN luminosities show close agreement with luminosities derived for X-ray selected AGN using both the X-ray flux and previous SED fitting results. We show that incorporating the flexibility of an AGN component when fitting the SEDs of galaxies with no AGN has no significant impact on the derived galaxy properties. However, in order to obtain accurate estimates of the stellar properties of AGN host galaxies, it is crucial to include an AGN component in the SED fitting process. We use our derived AGN luminosities to map the evolution of the AGN luminosity function for 0 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 2 and find good agreement with previous measurements and predictions from theoretical models.

Big Three Dragons: A [N ii] 122 μm Constraint and New Dust-continuum Detection of a z = 7.15 Bright Lyman-break Galaxy with ALMA

Abstract We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 7 observational results of a Lyman-break galaxy at z = 7.15, B14-65666 (“Big Three Dragons”), which is an object detected in [O iii] 88 μm, [C ii] 158 μm, and dust continuum emission during the epoch of reionization. Our targets are the [N ii] 122 μm fine-structure emission line and the underlying 120 μm dust continuum. The dust continuum is detected with a ∼19σ significance. From far-infrared spectral energy distribution sampled at 90, 120, and 160 μm, we obtain a best-fit dust temperature of 40 K (79 K) and an infrared luminosity of log 10 ( L IR / L ⊙ ) = 11.6 (12.1) at the emissivity index β = 2.0 (1.0). The [N ii] 122 μm line is not detected. The 3σ upper limit of the [N ii] luminosity is 8.1 × 107 L ⊙. From the [N ii], [O iii], and [C ii] line luminosities, we use the Cloudy photoionization code to estimate nebular parameters as functions of metallicity. If the metallicity of the galaxy is high (Z &gt; 0.4 Z ⊙), the ionization parameter and hydrogen density are log 10 U ≃ − 2.7 ± 0.1 and n H ≃ 50–250 cm−3, respectively, which are comparable to those measured in low-redshift galaxies. The nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratio, N/O, is constrained to be subsolar. At Z &lt; 0.4 Z ⊙, the allowed U drastically increases as the assumed metallicity decreases. For high ionization parameters, the N/O constraint becomes weak. Finally, our Cloudy models predict the location of B14-65666 on the BPT diagram, thereby allowing a comparison with low-redshift galaxies.

DirtyGrid II: An Analysis of the Dust and Stellar Properties in Nearby Star-forming Galaxies

Abstract We study the dust and stellar properties of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey galaxies by fitting the ultraviolet (UV) to far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distributions using the DirtyGrid stellar and dust radiative transfer models. We find a minimum of two components of different stellar ages are needed, representing a young and an old stellar population, in order to obtain good fits for most of the galaxies. Our total dust masses agree with literature dust masses to within a factor of 2, and the residuals correlate most strongly with the stellar mass surface density of the old component. The LMC-2 dust grain model best describes the dust found in these normal star-forming galaxies. The derived attenuation curves are steeper than those found previously for starburst galaxies, and possess a weak 2175 Å feature. The relative contribution of the young and old stellar components as a function of wavelength reveals that the young component dominates the far-UV and MIPS24 bands, the old component dominates the optical/near-IR bands, and both components are important for the FIR bands. The DirtyGrid star formation rates (SFRs) are consistent with a number of literature SFR indicators within a factor of 2. The differences we find are primarily due to the influence of the old stellar population that are accounted for by the DirtyGrid SFRs fitting on a galaxy-by-galaxy basis using the information present in the full UV-FIR spectral energy distribution.

Galaxy properties of type 1 and 2 X-ray selected AGN and a comparison among different classification criteria

We present analyses of host galaxy properties of type 1 and type 2 X-ray selected Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the XMM-XXL field, which have an available optical spectroscopic classification. We modelled their optical to far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using the X-CIGALE code. X-CIGALE allows for the fitting of X-ray flux and accounts for the viewing angle of dusty torus and the attenuation from polar dust. By selecting matched type 1 and 2 sub-samples in the X-ray luminosity and redshift parameter space, we find that both types live in galaxies with similar star formation. However, type 2 AGN tend to reside in more massive systems (10.87−0.12+0.06 M⊙) compared to their type 1 counterparts (10.57−0.12+0.20 M⊙). In the second part of our analysis, we compare the spectroscopic classification with that from the SED fitting. X-CIGALE successfully identifies all spectroscopic type 2 sources either by estimating an inclination angle that corresponds to edge on viewing of the source or by measuring increased polar dust in these systems. Approximately 85% of spectroscopic type 1 AGN are also identified as such, based on the SED fitting analysis. There is a small number of sources (∼15% of the sample) that present broad lines in their spectra, but they show strong indications of obscuration, based on SED analysis. These could be systems that are viewed face on and have an extended dust component along the polar direction. The performance of X-CIGALE in classifying AGN is similar at low and high redshifts, under the condition that there is sufficient photometric coverage. Finally, the usage of optical/mid-IR colour criteria to identify optical red AGN (u − W3) suggests that these criteria are better suited for IR selected AGN and their efficiency drops for the low to moderate luminosity sources included in X-ray samples.

Probing the spectral shape of dust emission with the DustPedia galaxy sample

ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to understand the variance of the far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) of the DustPedia galaxies, and its link with the stellar and dust properties. An interesting aspect of the dust emission is the inferred FIR colours which could inform us about the dust content of galaxies, and how it varies with the physical conditions within galaxies. However, the inherent complexity of dust grains as well as the variety of physical properties depending on dust, hinder our ability to utilize their maximum potential. We use principal component analysis (PCA) to explore new hidden correlations with many relevant physical properties such as the dust luminosity, dust temperature, dust mass, bolometric luminosity, star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, specific SFR, dust-to-stellar mass ratio, the fraction of absorbed stellar luminosity by dust (fabs), and metallicity. We find that 95 per cent of the variance in our sample can be described by two principal components (PCs). The first component controls the wavelength of the peak of the SED, while the second characterizes the width. The physical quantities that correlate better with the coefficients of the first two PCs, and thus control the shape of the FIR SED are the dust temperature, the dust luminosity, the SFR, and fabs. Finally, we find a weak tendency for low-metallicity galaxies to have warmer and broader SEDs, while on the other hand high-metallicity galaxies have FIR SEDs that are colder and narrower.

NOEMA Redshift Measurements of Extremely Bright Submillimeter Galaxies near the GOODS-N

Abstract We report spectroscopic redshift measurements for three bright submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) near the GOODS-N field, each with SCUBA-2 850 μm fluxes &gt;10 mJy, using the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). Our molecular line-scan observations of these sources, which occupy an ∼7 arcmin2 area outside of the Hubble Space Telescope coverage of the field, reveal that two lie at z ∼ 3.14. In the remaining object, we detect line emission consistent with CO(7–6), [C i], and H2O at z = 4.42. The far-infrared spectral energy distributions of these galaxies, constrained by SCUBA-2, NOEMA, and Herschel/SPIRE, indicate instantaneous star formation rates ∼4000 M ⊙ yr−1 in the z = 4.42 galaxy and ∼2500 M ⊙ yr−1 in the two z ∼ 3.14 galaxies. Based on the sources’ CO line luminosities, we estimate M gas ∼ 1011 M ⊙ and find gas depletion timescales of τ depl ∼ 50 Myr, consistent with findings in other high-redshift SMGs. Finally, we show that the two z ∼ 3.14 sources, which alone occupy a volume ∼10 Mpc3, very likely mark the location of a protocluster of bright SMGs and less-dusty optical sources.
