The Foundation for the Study of Population which is a private national family planning program offering subsidized services to the poorer sectors of the Mexican population was evaluated after 3 years of experience. It was concluded that this program was probably the most efficient means of promoting family planning yet tried in Mexico because it gave family planning and contraceptive education to large numbers of potential acceptors at 1 time and in 1 place. In 1972 acceptance rates at the 5 hospitals studied varied from 26%-73% comparing favorably with those in other countries. The majority of acceptors received oral contraceptives which were associated with the highest program dropout rate. 34% of nonacceptors gave opposition of spouse or the need to consult spouse as the reason for not accepting and 18% of the acceptors dropped out because of spouses opposition. Instituting an educational program for the couples was suggested as a means to reduce the number of nonacceptors and dropouts. It appeared that the motivational talks given to patients need improving since lack of knowledge and fear of side effects (19%) were given as reasons for nonacceptance.
