Motivations to Adopt Transracially in South Africa

Motivation to adopt transracially is under-researched in the South African context. This paper reports on qualitative psycho-social research, using the life stage model to investigate motivation to adopt in 26 transracially adoptive families, interviewed in focus groups and family interviews. Results indicate that the decision to adopt is complex, and influenced by opportunities and obstacles. Both parent- and child-centered motivations, as well as preferential adoption are endorsed by parents. Preferential adoption and child-centered motivation in the absence of fertility problems create a novel family form, which include both biological and adopted children, for almost half the families interviewed.

Brain Death and Its Effect on Organ Donation: A 10-Year Analysis

Objective :Brain death can be defined as the irreversible loss of brain functions. It is evident that a delay occurred in the diagnosis of brain death will result in the loss of many cadaveric organs and thus, the number of patients waiting for organ transplantation will increase. Despite there being many studies in the literature about the diagnosis and difficulties of brain death, family interviews, and organ donation, the studies regarding the effects of the regulation change in Turkey on organ donation are limited. The present study includes 10-year retrospective data and it has been conducted to offer an insight to the scientists about the diagnosis of brain death and organ donation.
 Method: The study was conducted by using data obtained from the examination of the retrospective files of patients diagnosed with brain death between 2011 and 2021 at Pamukkale University, Faculty of Medicine after obtaining the approval of the ethics committee.
 Results: After the study was initiated, the files of 71 patients diagnosed with brain death between 2011 and 2021, were accessed. Due to the missing information in the files of 4 patients, these patients were excluded from the study. Of 67 patients with registered brain death, 36 were male (53.7%) and 31 were female (46.2%). The age average was 49.07. When the treatment units of these patients were evaluated, 50 patients (74.6%) diagnosed with brain death were treated at the neurosurgery intensive care unit, 7 (10.4%) at the neurology intensive care unit, 6 (9%) at the anesthesia intensive care unit, and 4 (6%) at the cardiovascular surgery intensive care unit.
 Conclusions:The study concluded that the importance of the diagnosis duration of brain death and the number of specialists who diagnosed brain death in the previous years may have affected this process. It is clear that the formal process, which changed after 2014, showed an acceleration in diagnosis. Relationship Between Attachment Behaviors and Marital Trust Among Nurses With the Mediating Role of Covert Aggression

Background: Marital trust as a fiduciary relationship is very important for ensuring the continuity of married life, and identifying its factors are critical. Female nurses are prone to marital problems due to involvement in stressful jobs with different work shifts and long working hours. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of covert aggression in relationships between attachment behaviors and marital trust in female nurses. Methods: This correlational study was conducted using structural equation modeling (SEM) from March to June 2021. The statistical population consisted of all married female nurses (aged 25-55 years) working in hospitals in Shiraz City, Iran. Of whom, 310 were selected as the sample through two-stage cluster random sampling. The research instruments included the Trust in Close Relationships scale, the brief accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement (BARE) scale, and the couples relational aggression and victimization scale (CRAViS). The proposed model was evaluated by SEM, and indirect relationships were examined using the Bootstrap method in AMOS-24. The significance level was considered to be 0.05. Results: The results showed that both indirect paths of dimensions of attachment behaviors and a marital trust, mediated by covert aggression (destruction of social image and emotional withdrawal), were statistically significant (P<0.05). In addition, the results demonstrated a significant and direct relationship between dimensions of attachment behaviors and marital trust (P<0.01). Conclusion: The study results show the acceptable goodness of fit of the proposed model. Therefore, policymakers, family consultants, and psychiatric nurses are recommended to pay special attention to the effects of attachment behaviors and covert aggression on the marital trust of female nurses.

Assessing Healthy Aging Score and Its Association With All-Cause Mortality: Findings From the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

To construct a comprehensive healthy aging score (HAS) and explore its association with all-cause mortality and its potential interactions with other demographics on mortality. This study included 5,409 participants aged ≥60 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. An HAS was constructed based on three dimensions of healthy aging including intrinsic capacity (IC), environmental support (ES), and chronic disease (CD), which were assessed at baseline, and categorized by tertiles (poor, moderate, and high). Participants were followed up biennially for all-cause mortality through the death registration or family interview from 2011 to 2018. Data were analyzed using Cox regression, Laplace regression, and receiver-operating characteristic analysis. During 7 years of follow-up, 877 (16.21%) participants died. An HAS was constructed based on the cognition, mobility, and instrumental activity of daily living in the IC dimension; housing in the ES dimension; and hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung disease, stroke, and cancer in the CD dimension, which was associated with death. HAS seems a good predictor of all-cause mortality, with an area under the curve of 0.749. The hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for all-cause mortality related to moderate and poor HAS (vs high HAS) were 1.26 (1.01-1.56) and 2.38 (1.94-2.91), respectively. The median survival time was 2.46 years shorter in participants with poor HAS than those with high HAS. There were significant additive interactions of HAS with age, sex, and marital status on death. Poor HAS may increase mortality and shorten survival, especially among older, male, and single adults.

Negotiations of language(s) and inequalities in transnational family biographies

Families that live in a new environment after having fled or migrated go through transformation processes that are connected to various challenges and possibilities. The focus of this paper is on negotiations of language policies in family biographies and family language practices, comparing cases of migrant families who arrived to Switzerland in different legal contexts of migration. The article addresses how these transnational families negotiate the meaning of (family) languages against the background of hegemonic language and migration policies. Questions of how these policies are experienced and dealt with and in what ways they do enable or disable possibilities for action are addressed using a qualitative analysis of narrative family interviews and participant observations in transnational families that now live in German-speaking Switzerland. On the basis of the analyses of interview transcriptions and field notes, I show how families deal with experiences of social and educational inequalities in the context of transnational pathways of education and how these are negotiated in the families. Language learning appears not only as an (un)available possibility, but it also requires one to return to the status of a student. At the same time, it is accompanied by a deep struggle for identity and belonging.

Abstract: Drawing from family archives and interviews, Mark Cazem recounts the colorful stories of his father, Ponce Cazem, from being a chauffeur/houseboy for celebrities during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s to becoming Staff Sergeant Ponce Cazem in the 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment and 1st Battalion, Company B of the United States during World War II. Despite hardships and racism, his father found community and support in unlikely places and eventually married Jovita, a Filipina warbride, and settled in California.

Covid-19’s effects on strong and weak ties in middle-class familiesInsights from intergenerational qualitative longitudinal data

The contact restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic influence social relationships in families and at work. Drawing on Granovetter’s network theory, the changes of strong and weak ties in different life spheres of middle-class families and their importance for coping with the crisis are analyzed. The article builds on intergenerational qualitative longitudinal data that was collected in a project on status maintenance of middle-class families that conducted narrative family interviews with three generations between August 2018 and August 2021. In general, strong ties to close family members and friends continued during the pandemic through modified interaction practices and even intensified. They provided reciprocal and emotional social support, which was needed to cope with changing social conditions and uncertainties. Restrictions were experienced by the oldest generation or when intrafamilial dependencies were reactivated. Regarding weak ties, distinctions must be made between different spheres and ties. Ties to more distant relatives and friends became looser or were cut, while neighborhoods gained significance. Central work and business ties to colleagues and customers were transformed and thus maintained, while more casual work relationships like professional networks were reduced or cut. Inequality effects can be observed to the detriment of women and the youngest generation.

Self-assertiveness and Perceived Parenting Style among Medical Students in Southern India: A Cross-sectional Study

Introduction: The youth population particularly medical students should have the ability to express their feelings without hurting others and thus develop proper communication with the patients. The way they express and take decision shows their self-assertiveness. The communication potential and the assertivenss skill is developed mainly during the childhood partially through parental guidance. Aim: To assess self-assertiveness and perceived parenting style among medical students and to assess any association between the variables. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted as a crosssectional study among 400 prefinal and final-year medical students (MBBS) from Travancore Medical College, Kollam district Kerala, India for a period of two months from January-February 2020. The data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire method which includes- socio-demographic details, Rathus assertiveness scale to assess self-assertiveness, and parenting bond instrument to assess perceived parenting style. The association was assessed using Chi-square and Fisher's exact test. The data was collected in Microsoft excel and analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Results: The mean age of the study population was 21.34±1.71 years, and there were 132 (33%) males, and 268 (67%) females. The study showed that 206 subjects (51.5%) had low assertiveness scores. Among subjects, most of the subjects {236 (59%) in the father and 252 (63%) in the mother} perceived their parents to have optimal parenting style. The male gender perceived the parents to be affectionless and high protection from the parents showed a significant reduction in the assertiveness scores. The study did not found any significant association between perceived parenting styles and the selfassertiveness score of medical students. In case of father, the Chi-square value was 7.27, and p-value was 0.20 and for mother the Chi-square value was 4.93 and the p-value was 0.08. Conclusion: Most of the medical students have low selfassertiveness score and perceived their parents to have optimal parenting styles. Even though the study showed an absence of association between the perceived parenting style and selfassertiveness, the importance of being assertive should be established among students and measures can be adopted to make a family consultation.

Creative activity of Valery Altukhov: the mission of the individual in the history of the kharkiv clarinet school

Statement of the problem is devoted to the study of the role of the outstanding clarinetist, teacher and founder of the Kharkiv Clarinet School, Valery Altukhov, in the development of musical heritage. The article examines in detail the creative activity of Valery Altukhov and his influence on the formation of the Kharkiv clarinet school. Special attention is paid to the study of the mission of Valery Altukhov’s personality and his influence on the history of this school. Analysis of recent research and publications. The research encompasses articles, scientific manuals by Valeriy Altukhov, interviews, personal recollections of students and family members, discussions, interviews, and masterclasses. Main objective of the study is to formulate the main guidelines of the author’s performing school of clarinet playing in Kharkiv based on the analysis of the creative personality of V. Altukhov. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that, for the first time, a comprehensive study of Valeriy Altukhov’s artistic work and his influence on the development of clarinet art in Ukraine and the establishment of the Kharkiv clarinet school has been conducted. The main principles and principles of Valeriy Altukhov’s creative method have been formulated. Methodology. To achieve the stated objective, a biographical, stylistic, and systemic approach was employed. The study utilized the methodological framework developed by the Department of Interpretology and Music Analysis of the Kharkiv I. P. Kotlyarevsky National University of Arts (in the aspect of phenomenology of specialness). Results. The presentation focuses on identifying Valeriy Altukhov’s personal mission and his role in the history of the Kharkiv clarinet school. His contribution to the education and training of a new generation of clarinetists is analyzed, as well as his active participation in musical events and educational activities. During the formation of the school, aspects such as technical training, development of expressive playing, and mastery of new contemporary techniques of clarinet playing and repertoire are considered. Conclusions. The analysis of Valeriy Altukhov’s creative activity has been conducted in the following directions: performing, scientific/methodological, pedagogical, and organizational/educational. The main positions of Valeriy Altukhov’s performing school have been summarized in terms of their interrelatedness and perspectives: Historical experience and rootedness in traditions: This is associated with a constellation of laureates from various international and nationwide competitions, which confirms the continuity of traditions within the «teacherstudent» system. High level of technical and ensemble mastery: Demonstrated by solo performers and orchestral musicians who have undergone a rigorous selection process and received education in Valeriy Altukhov’s class, enabling them to be competitive among representatives of other world schools. Study of diverse repertoire (classical and contemporary): It is an important component in the formation of comprehensive and relevant musical education, allowing the school to constantly evolve. As a result, Valeriy Altukhov’s clarinet school combines deep historical experience, tradition inheritance, high level of professional training, technical mastery, perspectives, and exploration of contemporary repertoire. These principles distinguish it as one of the oldest, representative, and successful clarinet schools in modern Ukraine. Based on the combination of pedagogical, educational, organizational, methodological, and scientific activities, the conclusion is drawn about the universalism of Valeriy Altukhov’s creative personality.

A qualitative study of organisational resilience in care homes in Scotland.

Providing care for the dependent older person is complex and there have been persistent concerns about care quality as well as a growing recognition of the need for systems approaches to improvement. The I-SCOPE (Improving Systems of Care for the Older person) project employed Resilient Healthcare (RHC) theory and the CARE (Concepts for Applying Resilience) Model to study how care organisations adapt to complexity in everyday work, with the aim of exploring how to support resilient performance. The project was an in-depth qualitative study across multiple sites over 24 months. There were: 68 hours of non-participant observation, shadowing care staff at work and starting broad before narrowing to observe care domains of interest; n = 33 recorded one-to-one interviews (32 care staff and one senior inspector); three focus groups (n = 19; two with inspectors and one multi-disciplinary group); and five round table discussions on emergent results at a final project workshop (n = 31). All interviews and discussion groups were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Resident and family interviews (n = 8) were facilitated through use of emotional touchpoints. Analysis using QSR NVivo 12.0 focused on a) capturing everyday work in terms of the interplay between demand and capacity, adaptations and intended and unintended outcomes and b) a higher-level thematic description (care planning and use of information; coordination of everyday care activity; providing person-centred care) which gives an overview of resilient performance and how it might be enhanced. This gives important new insight for improvement. Conclusions are that resilience can be supported through more efficient use of information, supporting flexible adaptation, coordination across care domains, design of the physical environment, and family involvement based on realistic conversations about quality of life.

Objectives In the study the researcher's personal experiences of childhood bereavement and delayed mourning were described. The purpose of this study is to explore what the children experienced at the time of the bereavement and to examine in depth the inner world and its meaning experienced by the children in the process of suppressing mourning for the bereavement and delaying mourning. Methods In this study a research method called autoethnography was applied, which is a field of self-study. The data were collected and analyzed in cooperation with the collaborator, focusing on the data recorded by the researcher's personal experiences, such as the researcher's self-reflection diary, memory recall data, psychotherapy verbatim, and family interview data. In order to secure the reliability and validity of this study, catalytic validity was used, and it received professional review by two Ph. Results First, children with insecure attachment suppress and avoid mourning feelings when they experience parental bereavement, and mourning may be delayed. Second, for children who have experienced bereavement of their parents, the bereavement experience can become complex trauma if they lack or lack the care and attention of surrounding adults, including one living parent. Third, the primary emotion can be mainly experienced at the time of the bereavement experience and the secondary emotion can be mainly experienced from the experience following the delayed mourning process, and it can be seen that the secondary emotion is related to complicated grief. Fourth, in order to adopt the self-cultural descriptive paper as a research method, it is necessary to look at the researcher's own emotions objectively. Conclusions When mourning for the death of a parent was delayed, it was a complex trauma, and as a result, secondary emotions rather than primary emotions had a profound effect on the individual as a whole.

 The objectives and duties of BP4 are to remain consistent in implementing Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning marriage and legislation concerning marriage. Organizing marriage and family consultations and carrying out mediation for couples who have problems.
 This research is a qualitative descriptive study, which was conducted at the KUA Sorong Duum Islands. Data analysis uses descriptive data in the form of observations, interviews, written or spoken words from people and observable behavior, which aims to find out how the BP4 guidance pattern (Advisory, Development and Marital Preservation Agency) is applied in resolving house conflicts ladder.
 The results of the study show that the pattern of guidance in Sorong Duum Islands is conducting face-to-face guidance with discussions. This is done so that the adviser and those concerned know the conflicts in the household and find solutions and provide advice.
 The implications of this research have not been effective because there are roles that BP4 should be able to maximize but because they are not supported by facilities. Such as the facilities provided by BP4 when consulting clients, namely the inadequate room because the room provided should have private room facilities so that people are free to express their complaints but it turns out that in the field there is no private room, no special soundproof room. In addition, the SOP standard must be further improved, one of which is the time given during guidance must be in accordance with the SOP, which is approximately 10 minutes so that the couple understands the future steps to be taken.
 
 
 

Single Adoptive Parents and Their Adoptee Adolescents: Building Parenting Competencies and Secure Attachments

Single adoptive parents and their adoptees who transition into adolescence are likely to face several challenges. This article reports the impact of a WhatsApp-based spiritual education lessons (SEL) intervention on bolstering parenting competencies and secure attachments of single adoptive parents-adoptee adolescent dyads (Npre-test = 86; Npost-test = 76). An active control group based experimental design was used with WhatsApp-based general posts as the control condition. Parenting competencies were assessed pre- and post-test by the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC) and Me as a Parent Scale (MaaP) and adolescent attachment outcomes were assessed by the Friends and Family Interview (FFI). Results supported the intervention and the SEL posts had greater impact on mother-daughter dyads, middle class, ever-single adoptive parents, highly qualified, professionals-salaried, and whose intervention compliance was higher. Actor-partner interdependence models indicated that single adoptive parents’ and adoptee adolescents’ outcomes were mutually associated. Latent class analysis suggested an eight-latent-class model of participant clusters likely to gain more from the SEL intervention, which included: adoptee female adolescents-ever-single adoptive female parents, adoptee male adolescents-ever-single adoptive female parents, middle class, highly qualified, professional-salaried, and who complied with the intervention by reading posts and completing homework above the recommended threshold.

Intergenerational Voices of Adoption: Family Stories of Adoptees and Their Adult Children

Little is known about adoptees’ experiences through adulthood. Individuals sometimes make sense of their heritage, and come to understand and express themselves in their unique voices, through storytelling. Five mother-child(ren) dyads and triads participated. The mothers had been adopted in infancy and raised by an adoptive family. Their biological child(ren) had grown up aware their mother was an adoptee. The feminist relational method of the listening guide (Gilligan et al., 2003) was employed to hear the adoption stories passed from one generation to the next. Parent and adult child(ren) were interviewed together to explore voices embedded in the relational context of their story. The joint family interviews were analyzed for these different voices. The findings suggest mothers passed down stories of positive adoption experiences through voices that were both embracing of their adoption narrative and sometimes cautious. The children spoke from voices of embrace and curiosity. Both generations stated the meaningfulness of co-constructing family adoption narratives.

Parents' experiences of the significance of interpersonal interactions for becoming parents and a family during neonatal intensive care

PurposeTo describe parents' experiences of the significance of interpersonal interactions for becoming parents and a family during neonatal intensive care. Design and MethodsWe employed a qualitative descriptive design with semi-structured family interviews. Ten families were included from four neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in Sweden. Results were evaluated using thematic analysis. ResultsThe results were presented as two themes: 1) Interactions within the family, and 2) Interactions between parents and staff. Analyses revealed that interpersonal interactions could both facilitate and hinder development in becoming a parent and a family. ConclusionInteractions within the family and with the staff have an important function in the process of becoming a parent and a family. This process would benefit from a systemic approach, focusing on the family as a unit, as unique individuals, and as parents with unique needs and experiences. Practice implicationsOur findings can facilitate changes to reduce the separation between family members (mother-father-newborn-siblings) during their stay in NICU; guiding parents to take care of their child, while being sensitive and balancing their situation as to where they are in their process; supporting the family through joint conversations by listening to the parents and their expectations and experiences both in the NICU and at home; and encouraging parents to do everyday things together outside NICU like an ordinary family.

Factor XIII Deficiency Managed With Individualized Homoeopathic Medicine In Intellectually Disabled Child: An Evidence Based Case Report

AbstractFactor XIII deficiency is an inherited bleeding disorder, which is rare, ∼1 in 5,000,000, while its combination with an intellectual disability is seldom. It is mostly a result of genetic mutation caused due to consanguineous marriage. Due to deficiency of fibrin stabilising factor, a clot formed is weak and leads to fibrinolysis, which is evident as unstoppable bleeding from umbilical cord stump, epistaxis and bleeding from various organs. The condition is made worst due to intellectual disability as the patient is more prone to injuries due to lack of knowledge of impending dangers. The latest provision of gene therapy is yet to be achieved in such cases and therefore the biggest challenge lies in keeping these patients fit and functional with optimum quality of life. The anxiety of parents is intensified due to the overall condition of the patient. This case report presents homoeopathic management of one such case. The patient was under treatment for almost a decade. Acute homoeopathic medicines efficiently managed acute haemorrhagic episodes. Constitutional medicine Bufo Rana was prescribed in the asymptomatic phase, which helped to reduce the frequency and intensity of bleeding and also helped to improve social quotient of the patient. The social quotient was assessed employing the Vineland Social Maturity Scale, and the result shows that the social quotient of the patient has improved from 8.3 to 41.66. The anxiety of parents also reduced, which was measured using the Family Interview for Stress and Coping in Mental Retardation Scale. The case analysis was done using a paired t-test. The p-value is less than 0.0001 and highly significant. The evaluation of the homoeopathic treatment was done using modified Naranjo criteria for homoeopathy. Homoeopathy medicines efficiently managed the acute episodes of bleeding and also showed improvement in the intellectual disability.

A Pilot Feasibility Study of an Intensive Summer Day Camp Intervention for Children with Selective Mutism.

Cost, scheduling, and implementation competency are barriers to accessing traditional evidence-based behavioral interventions for childhood selective mutism (SM). Brief, or intensive, interventions are a disruptive innovation to traditional therapy given the use of fewer sessions during a short-term time period. This study explored the acceptability, integrity, and effectiveness (i.e., single-case replicated AB design) of an intensive summer camp consisting of a 5-day behavioral therapy for 25 children with SM. Caregiver-rated treatment acceptability ratings and family interviews support intensive summer day camp as an acceptable intervention approach for SM. Additionally, results revealed that counselors and parents implemented SM behavioral therapy during camp with impressive integrity (>90%) after receiving training about SM behavioral therapy from an SM expert clinician. Effect size calculations of counselor-rated daily behavior ratings revealed reductions in anxiety during camp for 18 of the 25 campers. Significant caregiver-rated improvements in speaking behaviors were reported for 9 out of 14 campers with data available for analysis at the 3-month follow-up. This pilot feasibility study is the first to investigate intensive summer day camp as a treatment approach for SM and implications for future research are discussed.

Te Pou: An Indigenous Framework to Evaluate the Inclusion of Family Voice in Family Violence Homicide Reviews

PurposeWithin this paper we evaluate the inclusion of the family voice in the domestic homicide review process. We use an Indigenous rubric (Te Pou) developed to ensure a culturally appropriate framework for conducting fatality reviews. We further draw on the creative potential of Indigenous knowledge systems, applying them alongside Western understandings of the engagement of family in homicide reviews, to seed new knowledge. This review has been undertaken early in the process of implementing family interviews to learn from current practices, seeking to improve them and, thereby, be better hosts for those invited to be part of a review.MethodsThe process of including family input into the in-depth reviews of family violence homicide reviews, conducted between October 2019 and November 2021, was reviewed against the guidelines specified within Te Pou.ResultsWhile there were strengths within the current process, the review established that further work is required to fully embed cultural understandings and processes within homicide reviews. Indeed, the current process and legislative framework in which it is based, works against relational obligations of reciprocity and a duty to care.ConclusionsUsing indigenous frameworks and research methods, it is possible to determine how homicide review processes have the potential to embed trauma rather than providing an opportunity for critical reflection and healing. Repositioning homicide reviews will require a reconceptualization of the legislative framework and support system requirements for review panels.

The perceived helpfulness of structural family therapy in caring for Hong Kong Chinese families of an adolescent with intellectual disabilities: A qualitative inquiry

AbstractBackgroundPrevious literature pinpointed the limitations of behavioural treatment in helping families of people with intellectual disabilities to transit lifecycle adjustment and suggested the contributions of systemic intervention made to this population.MethodsThis study aimed to explore the applicability of structural family therapy to helping Hong Kong Chinese families of adolescents with intellectual disabilities from the perspective of family members. Nine members from four families of adolescents with intellectual disabilities were recruited. Family or individual interviews were conducted. A thematic analysis was adopted for data analysis.FindingsThe families experienced two major changes after the therapy, that is, sharing the care responsibilities among family members and using more open communication styles in the family. Structural family therapy was found to be helpful in mediating family problems and promoting the active involvement of adolescents with intellectual disabilities in family interactions. However, the family participants expected clear guidance for the future development of adolescents with intellectual disabilities in a family treatment process.ConclusionsStructural family therapy can be a promising approach to working with Chinese families of adolescents with intellectual disabilities.
