Improving the sustainability of regional cleaner production programs

Abstract The sustainability of cleaner production programs requires long-term co-operation between governments, both local and at State level, the university and industry. The presented approach to sustaining cleaner production activities in a region consists of three phases: the initiation, the basic capacity level and the sustainability phase. The initiation phase demands initial funds from donors, experts from universities and case studies in industry. The basic capacity level for further popularization and dissemination of cleaner production principles is achieved by establishing and operating a cleaner production center and/or spin-off company. The former operates primarily in a promotional and research environment, while the latter is typical of the business and development environment. Besides establishing long-term co-operation with stakeholders, a local cleaner production program should be started in the sustainability phase and only on the basis of its results can regional programs be set up to ensure the sustaining of cleaner production activities in the region. The first cleaner production project in Slovenia was initiated by the Graz University of Technology and the University of Maribor. The project was supported by the Austrian and Slovene Governments. Later on proposals were made to found a national cleaner production center. UNIDO was willing to support it but the Slovene side did not show interest in time and the project was thus not realized. When the Slovene Government eventually was willing to support it, UNIDO would not be ready to provide the financial means any more. Consequently, the local government and the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering joined forces and a new cleaner production project in the textile industry was launched. The project was then expanded to include a consulting company, which resulted in the emerging of a spin-off company now located in the Styrian Technological Park. This spin-off company has already initiated and carried out numerous projects in the fields of cleaner production and rational energy consumption. Alongside the university, consulting companies and industry, it also works in collaboration with international companies.

Computer and multimedia in chemical engineering education

The way of teaching MULTIMEDIA and INTERNET at the Chemical Engineering Faculty of Technical University Budapest and their usage in the education of different chemical subjects are presented. The computer algebra systems play a very important role in teaching of mathematics. Several examples are shown for the application of DERIVE, MAPLE, MATLAB and EXCEL for the solution of chemical engineering problems in teaching of Mathematical Analysis, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods and Mathematical Statistics.

Computer network in education and research at the Chemical Engineering Faculty of Technical University Budapest

At the end of the 1980s an information and network system was developed at the Chemical Engineering Faculty of Technical University of Budapest. Our aim was to provide computer aided communication for departments, administration and students of the faculty. Since its beginnings the development has gone though many phases both the applied software technologies and the range of features offered by the system. At the second part of our article we describe the Chemonet home page (Chemical Information System), which informs the chemistry researchers and students. We introduced a new tutorial which was developed in order to help the Chemical Engineering students' work and study. By this tutorial one can easily and quickly learn the use of ChemWind 3.0.

A Five-Year Master of Environmental Engineering Curriculum

The master’s degree is essentially the entry-level degree for those wanting to practice environmental engineering. Although the BS/MSCE (environmental emphasis) path produces graduates in high demand by employers, certain parts of the environmental engineering discipline demand graduates with a more specialized degree program. In response to the need for a specialized, or “professional,” degree program, Texas Tech offers an alternative to the traditional path to becoming an environmental engineer: the Master of Environmental Engineering (MEnvE) degree. The courses in the curriculum (EnvE course numbers) are taught by either civil or chemical engineering faculty. The MEnvE degree is a five-year “freshman-to-master’s degree” program. The BS/MSCE (environmental emphasis) degree program and the MEnvE program essentially require the same number of credit hours and many of the same courses. One principal difference between the two programs is that the BS/MSCE path provides graduates with a broader civil engineering or chemical engineering background while the MEnvE program provides graduates with more concentrated preparation in biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, and environmental engineering. A second principal difference is that MEnvE graduates are focused on environmental engineering design. Thus, the MEnvE degree program is referred to as a professional degree program since graduates from the program typically enter professional practice rather than continue for a PhD degree.

EXTRAÇÃO E FRACIONAMENTO DE PRODUTOS DE OCORRÊNCIA NATURAL COM FLUIDOS SUPERCRITICOS

O uso de fluidos supercríticos na extração de produtos naturais tem-se mostrado como uma potencial tecnologia, apresentando inúmeras vantagens em relação à extração com solventes comuns. Nos processos envolvendo produtos naturais incluem-se desde aplicações implantadas em nível comercial, como a descafeinização do café, até investigações a nível laboratorial, tais como a extração de princípios ativos de produtos naturais (como, por exemplo, alcalóides) e encapsulamento de agentes quimioterapêuticos pela cristalização a partir de misturas supercríticas e/ou a utilização de fluidos supercríticos como anti-solventes. Objetivando o levantamento de subsídios experimentais e teóricos que contribuam para o desenvolvimento científico desta promissora tecnologia no Brasil, o Laboratório de Engenharia de Processos de Produtos Naturais do Departamento de Termofluidodinâmica da Faculdade de Engenharia Química da UNICAMP vem se dedicando, nos últimos quatro anos, ao estudo da extração de princípios ativos e do fracionamento de produtos de ocorrência natural utilizando fluidos supercríticos. Neste trabalho, apresenta-se uma exposição das atividades e os resultados obtidos por este grupo de pesquisa na área de extração e fracionamento de produtos de ocorrência natural.

Analytical chemical laboratory exercises on basic and advanced level at the Technical University Budapest

An overview on the practical laboratory work done by the chemical engineering students is given at different levels of the curriculum of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. Laboratory exercises and individual laboratory work is carried out at the following levels: Basic level. The different analytical chemical methods are acquisited by the students. Advanced level. A problem oriented project work is done with integrated use of the different analytical methods in the 8th semester. Thesis work. Specialized individual work on an elected research topic. Postgraduate courses. Organized for the understanding and practice of the latest methods and applications in the analytical chemistry. The programs of the different levels are detailed in the following.

From Small Scale, Short Term to Large Scale, Long Term: Integrating ‘Sustainability’ into Engineering Education

SUMMARY During the last two decades, societal demands on engineering education to provide safe and environmentally benign technology have increased strongly. Delft University of Technology—and the Faculty of Chemical Engineering in particular—has been actively responding to these demands, when necessary by developing radically new educational programmes. The first educational programmes, started in the 1970s, integrated safety, health, the environment and often highly controversial ethical questions; these programmes are continuing. Typical of these programmes is a broadness of approach. Students receive training in the physical-chemical-biological fundamentals of risks posed by engineering, as well as social-philosophical aspects as they study controversial and value-laden contemporary issues, such as biotechnology, energy provision, and possible climate change. The Delft programmes, in many respects still unique and daring even today, have been in use for more than 20 years already and have been applied successfully to thousands of students. The recent advent of the concept of ‘sustainability’, however, requires new approaches. Sustainability greatly increases the spatial, temporal, biological and intellectual scale on which engineering criteria must be based: the entire planet, future generations, whole ecosystems, and philosophical and institutional aspects of our industrial civilization. These philosophical and institutional aspects include the social-economic-political systems of our society, and the values, norms and ethics on which these institutions are based. Incorporating such abstract, extremely complex normative and obviously controversial material into engineering education, and combining this with traditional technical knowledge, is no simple matter. However, this is precisely what the Delft programmes are striving to achieve. How the present programmes evolved and are working, and future developments comprise the subject of this paper.

Environmental Studies in Chemical Engineering Curriculum at Tallinn Technical University

SUMMARY The roles of chemical engineers and environmental engineers in the post-socialist society are discussed. Details of the environmental education system at Tallinn Technical University and within its Chemical Engineering Faculty are presented. The importance of teaching the basics of ecology and environmental technology, as well as cleaner technology for chemical engineers are emphasized. The list of specialized courses for chemical engineers interested in environmental problems for undergraduate and postgraduate studies is given and the content of some more important courses characterized. The possible changes to the study plan in connection with transferring to a 4-year BSc curriculum are discussed. The importance of continuing environmental education and cooperation between different universities in the field of environmental education is emphasized.

A rapid and inexpensive method was used for measuring the diffusion coefficient. The procedure consists essentially of soaking a porous disc in the solution of interest and then suspending the disc over a bath of pure water. The rate of diffusion of trona solution from the disc is then ascertained by measuring the apparent weight of the suspended disc at various times. The rate of change of the apparent weight is directly related to the loss of solute and hence to the diffusion coefficient of the trona. The diffusion coefficient of trona from solutions of various concentrations was measured and a linear relationship was found between diffusion coefficient and trona solution concentration. The average value of diffusion coefficient of trona was calculated to be 1.194 10−5 cm2/sec at 25°C. Surface analysis of doped lanthanide cobalt perovskites by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Laboratory for Inorganic Materials Science, Faculty of Chemical Technology, University of Twente, 7500 AE Enschede, The Netherlands High oxygen fluxes through mixed-conducting oxi- des with fluoride and perovskite structure are well known [1-3]. According to [4] the selective feeding of oxygen into high temperature electrochemical reactors generally comprises: (i) providing an electrochemical cell comprising a first zone and a second zone separated from the first by a solid multi- component membrane; (ii) raising the temperature of the electrochemical cell from about 300 °C to about 1400 °C; (iii) passing the oxygen-containing gas in surface contact with the membrance, and (iv) passing the methane in contact with the membrane surface in the second zone. It is evident that under a high temperamre working regime, the permeability of oxygen, as well as all of the other physical and chemical parameters, are very important for the realization of a highly effective chemical process at a large oxygen partial pressure gradient. The catalytic activity of such an oxidation process, e.g. of CO, methane, etc., is a function of the chemical state of the surface elements and decreases monotonically with the decrease of the surface atomic ratio of the 3-rd elements. In the work reported here the chemical state of the surface of an Sr-doped lanthanide cobalt perovskite (La0.3Sr0.7CoO3_~, 3LSC) was the object of an investigation carried out with the help of electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), includ- ing the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) methods. Development and screening of selective catalysts for the synthesis of clean liquid fuels

This article is a compilation of the research carried out under EEC contract EN3V-0400-D at the Institut fur Energieverfahrenstechnik in Julich and at the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Materials Science, Delft, concerning the development and screening of copper/cobalt-based catalysts for the synthesis of alcohol mixtures from syngas. Analogous work, based on copper/zinc oxide/alumina catalysts, has been performed at the Faculty of Chemical Technology in Twente University at Enschede. This work is described in a companion paper. Comparative tests of several catalysts in a pressure micropulse reactor and in a plug flow tubular reactor, carried out at the Institut fur Technische Chemie, TU Braunschweig, are presented in a second companion paper. In the discussion section of the present article the results obtained by the joint groups are compared with the initial objectives of the programme.

Professor Cristofor I. Simionescu on His 70th Birthday

Abstract Professor Cristofor I. Simionescu was born on July 17, 1920, in Dumbraveni-Suceava. His father was a high school teacher, and young Simionescu went to elementary school in his home town. After completing elementary school he went to Jassy and attended the prestigious “National Lyceum,” the roots of which stem from the “Michailean Academy.” He then began studies at the Polytechnic Institute of Jassy at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. As a young student he was known for his enthusiasm and was recognized as an excellent young scientist. In 1944 Cristofor Simionescu graduated mugna cum lade from the Polytechnic Institute in Jassy. He obtained his first scientific degree in organic technology, i.e., Doctor of Technical Sciences, in 1948, and became Associate Professor at the Polytechnic Institute. In 1951 he was promoted to Full Professor and was appointed to the Chair of Natural and Synthetic Macromolecules. From 1953 until 1976 Professor Simionescu was Rector of the Polytechnic Institute of Jassy.

Structuring scientific activities by co-author analysis

In this paper we apply ‘co-author analysis’ to create from a large set of publications clusters of collaborating researchers within a faculty of chemical engineering. Results have been discussed with an expert. The co-author clusters appeared to be meaningful, with respect to the identification of research groups, the relations within these groups, as well as to relations between these groups and changes in time. Also differences between ISI-based and non-ISI based maps proved to be consistent with the expert's opinion. Many clusters represent collaborating authors grouped around a full professor, mostly the department chairman. Co-author analysis can be used, for example, as an important tool in evaluative bibliometrics in order to make a first identification of research groups in ‘unknown’ universities or organizations.

Molten salt baths cited as lab hazards

A University of California, Berkeley, lab has been rebuilt and is ready for use again after being demolished in late July by the explosion of a molten salt bath. Berkeley chemistry and chemical engineering faculty members are concerned that many researchers are unaware of the potential dangers of these commonly used heat-transfer media. The explosion involved a glass polymer-synthesis apparatus immersed in a fused salt bath containing 3 lb of sodium nitrite and 1 lb of potassium thiocyanate. The bath had been heated above 270 °C using a hot plate. The experiment was being conducted in a closed fume hood. The explosion, which Berkeley faculty members estimate had the force of about 1 lb of dynamite, caused more than $200,000 damage to the new lab.
