Results: Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation from key informants, including the Village Head, village secretary, and community leaders. The findings reveal three primary factors influencing low participation: (1) effective leadership by the Village Head, characterized by openness and authenticity; (2) robust communication between the village government and the community, facilitating a platform for dialogue; and (3) the educational background of residents, which impacts their understanding of development processes. Novelty: This research highlights the interplay between these factors, contributing to the understanding of community dynamics in rural Indonesia. Implications: The results underscore the need for enhancing educational initiatives and fostering transparent communication strategies to boost community participation in development planning. By addressing these aspects, local governments can improve engagement, leading to more effective and sustainable infrastructure projects that meet the needs of the community. Unraveling Factors Influencing Local Willingness to Participate in Sustainable Komodo Conservation and Protected Area Tourism

Komodo National Park is at the forefront of balancing environmental conservation with the challenges and opportunities of sustainable tourism. This research delves into the attitudes and engagement levels of the local communities within Komodo's distinctive ecological context, aiming to unravel the factors that drive or hinder their involvement in sustainable tourism and conservation activities. Through Exploratory Factor Analysis, we distilled key influences on community engagement, followed by a K-Mean Cluster Analysis to segment the community by their involvement levels. Logistic Regression was then employed to explore the likelihood of continued participation in these initiatives. The analysis identified three primary factors affecting community participation: the degree of involvement in sustainable tourism activities, the extent of community and environmental involvement, and the level of awareness regarding tourism development policies. The Cluster Analysis illuminated diverse engagement patterns across demographic lines, revealing how differences in settlement type, income levels, marital status, gender, and age contribute to varied participation rates. Interestingly, the logistic regression pointed to a paradox where higher engagement in sustainable tourism correlates with a lower probability of future participation, hinting at possible sustainability fatigue among highly active community members. These intricate dynamics of community engagement in sustainable tourism within Komodo National Park, highlight the importance of tailored, demographic-specific approaches to foster inclusive participation in conservation efforts. The insights gained underscore the complexity of promoting sustainable tourism in sensitive ecological areas and offer critical recommendations for policymakers and conservation stakeholders aiming to enhance sustainable development in Komodo and similar settings globally.

An evaluation on community participation in ecotourism activities post Covid-19 pandemic at Tan Loc islet, Thot Not district, Can Tho city

The article aims to assess the status of community participation and the factors affecting community participation in ecotourism activities at Tan Loc islet, Thot Not district, Can Tho City after the Covid-19 pandemic. This study is conducted through documents, field trips, and questionnaires. The empirical results show five factors affecting community participation: perception of economic benefits, social capital, local resources, local policies, and lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on those mentioned earlier, the paper proposes several solutions to enhance community participation in ecotourism development in this area.

Community participation in urban planning process in Saudi Arabia: An empirical assessment

This paper examines factors affecting community participation in the urban planning process in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A quantitative method employing a questionnaire style survey was used to test the research hypotheses, with a qualitative method used to obtain a better understanding of the quantitative findings. Findings reveal that the level of community participation in the urban planning process is low. Factors contributing to lack of participation are the unwillingness of individuals to participate, as well as the inability of social media platforms used by urban authorities to effectively interact with the local community. Therefore, this study recommends the establishment of a unified national strategy for social media platforms used by urban institutions, which will stimulate the use of government instruments such as dialogue and incentives, thereby enhancing social networks and the effectiveness of organizers. These activities will also ensure that all stakeholders who are interested in the process will be invited to participate, thus improving the overall level of community participation.

The main purpose of this study is to find out the factors that influence community participation in paying Land and Building Tax to communities in Kuningan Regency. This study used descriptive and verifiable methods. The sample in this study was 400 respondents. Based on the results of the study that tax literacy, community attitudes, and the leadership of the village head have a joint influence on community participation in paying land and building taxes, partially tax literacy has a significant positive effect on community participation in paying land and building taxes, community attitudes have a significant positive effect on community participation in paying land and building taxes, and the leadership of the village head has a significant positive effect on community participation in paying land and building taxes.

Analysis of Predisposing Factors Affecting Community Participation in COVID-19 Vaccination

Background: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As of June 29, 2022, there were 542,188,789 cases of COVID-19 in the world, and 6,339,275 people died. Recipients of the COVID-19 vaccine in Central Lampung District dose 1 were 898,900 (81.95%) of the 80% target. Those who received the 2nd dose vaccine were 683,002 (62.27%) of the 70% target and booster vaccines by 23,665 (2.16%) of the 40% target. The study aimed to analyze the predisposing factors that influence participation in the COVID-19 vaccination in the community in Central Lampung district in 2022. Subjects and Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three sub-districts of Central Lampung district from July to September 2022. A total of 110 people were selected for this study. The dependent variable was the decision of participating in the COVID-19 vaccination. The inde­pendent variables were Knowledge, Education, Attitudes, Health Information, and Trust. Data was collected by using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a logistic regression test. Results: Health information (aOR= 18.58; 95% CI= 1.83 to 188.05; p= 0.013), and level of trust (aOR= 18.54; 95% CI= 2.77 to 123.80; p= 0.003) were related to community participation in the COVID-19 vaccination. Factors Affecting Community Participation in Environmental Corporate Social Responsibility Projects: Evidence from Mangrove Forest Management Project

Community participation in an environmental corporate social responsibility (CSR) project can help business enterprises effectively develop projects that respond to the actual demands of the community and effectively utilize a firm’s resources. This study aims to investigate factors that affect community participation in each stage of environmental corporate social responsibility project development. The environmental corporate social responsibility project explored in this study is a sustainable mangrove forest management project in the Pakprasae sub-district of Rayong province in Thailand. This study has tested whether enterprise-related factors (such as perceived CSR credibility and organization–public relationship (OPR) quality) and participant-related factors (such as ecological knowledge, perceived ecological values, and expected benefits from participation in the project, both monetary and non-monetary related benefits) could predict community participation in an environmental corporate social responsibility project development initiated by a business enterprise. Questionnaire surveys were administered to 355 community members who were the target group of this environmental corporate social responsibility project from June to July 2022. The collected data were inspected and analyzed using an inferential statistical technique. Multiple regression analyses were performed to test significant factors that affected community members’ participation in planning, implementing, and monitoring the project. The results revealed that perceived ecological values were the strongest predictor of participation in all stages of the project, including planning, implementing, and monitoring the project. Perceived CSR credibility and OPR quality also significantly affected participation in all stages, whereas ecological knowledge significantly affected participation only in the monitoring stage. These findings suggest that to promote community participation in each stage of environmental corporate social responsibility project development, it is important to enhance community members’ perceived ecological values, and community members should be educated in ecology to enhance participation in the monitoring stage.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Community Participation Expectations on Sustainability Urban Farming in Jakarta City

To meet the nutritional needs of the people of Jakarta, urban agriculture is one of the food supply solutions. This study analyzes community expectations for participation in sustainable urban agriculture in Jakarta. The latest developments of this study provide results on the impact of economic, health and environmental variables on people's expectations for the sustainability of urban agriculture in Jakarta. The novelty of this study is that it considers the theme of the study, namely the inhabitants of the city of Jakarta, engaged in urban agriculture, a total of 112 respondents. The results of this study indicate that economic, health and environmental variables, simultaneously or in part, positively influence the expectations of community involvement in the sustainability of urban agricultural activities in the city of Jakarta. Based on these findings, it can be said that the expectation of community engagement in sustainable urban agriculture in Jakarta translates into greater productivity, knowledge, skills, awareness and understanding of the existence of clear regulations. The corrected R-square value is 0.704 based on the results of the coefficients that determine the impact of economic, health and environmental factors on community participation expectations in the sustainability of urban agriculture in Jakarta. In other words, 70.4% of community participation expectations in urban agriculture depend on economic factors, while health and other environmental factors depend on other factors. Expectations for community involvement in sustainable urban agriculture are already high and Jakarta's food security can be ensured later.

Factors Influencing Community Participation in Forestry Management in Chiradzulu District, Malawi

Community participation in forestry management is a good approach to protecting forests and woodlands. This study was carried out to assess factors affecting community participation in forestry management in Chiradzulu District. The study employed a mixed-method approach where qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Results showed that there is an almost equal percentage of female and male respondents who participated in forestry management. The Logit model analysis shows that education variables are positive and statistically significant proving that education influences participation in forestry management and hence education is an important variable in determining households’ participation in forestry. Only the age group of 45 - 59 years was significant but had a negative coefficient with a moderate marginal effect at 59% (r = 0.59) implying that many people in this age group participated in forestry activities than other age groups. When the size of household land ownership was used as a proxy to indicate household wealth and then correlated with participation in forestry activities, a positive and significant correlation between households that owned 1 - 2 acres and 3 - 5 acres of land and their participation in forestry activities was observed. It can be concluded that the size of land owned is one of the key factors that determine households’ participation in forestry management. Furthermore, a connection between land size distribution and effects on environmental resources was evident.

PARTISIPASI MASYARAKAT DALAM PENGELOLAAN HUTAN MANGROVE UNTUK MENINGKATKAN EKONOMI DI DESA TAMBAKREJO KABUPATEN MALANG JAWA TIMUR

The purpose of this study were to analyze the comprehension and perceptions, degree of participation and the factors that can have an effect on the economic development of the community in managing mangrove forests. The data analysis method uses analytical descriptive. The results showed that: (1) Respondent has a proficient comprehension of mangroves as much as 52.6%, while for the perception of the majority of respondents have the perception of that 39.5% (2) The majority of respondents have a moderate level of participation (68.4%), (3) Factors affecting community participation are: sufficient tourism facilities, the number of available productive age workers is sufficient, thus making a positive economic impact for the benefit of the community. Suggestions for follow-up are as follows, the public of Tambakrejo needs an assistance in regards of innovation and marketing skills of products derived from mangrove, as well as an excellent waste management training in mangrove surrounding the coastal areas

STUDY OF SOCIAL REALIZATION OF COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION ON DEVELOPMENT IN GAMPONG MERDUATI VILLAGE BANDA ACEH

Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze community participation and the factors that influence the development of the Gampong Merduati village in Banda Aceh. The qualitative research method is the method used in this study. Determination of informants is done by purposive sampling, assuming that the informant understands the problem being studied and can provide information and responses to the issues that are the objectives of this study.
 Methodology: The data needed in this study consists of primary data and secondary data. Data collection techniques are interviews, observation, and documentation studies. Data analysis in this study used the method of Milles and Hubernan (1984), which consisted of Data Reduction, Display Data, and Conclusion Drawings.
 Main Findings: The results of this study show that community participation in the implementation of the Village Fund Allocation (ADD) in the Gampong Merduati Banda Aceh, both participation in the form of energy, mind, and involvement in the form of the budget has been running well, following the wishes of community members and implementation instructions. Factors affecting community participation in the implementation of the Village Fund Allocation in Gampong Merduati Village in Banda Aceh are a sense of belonging, responsibility, and habits that have become a tradition in the Gampong Merduati Village.
 Applications of this study: The community, government, and universities can use the results of this study.
 Novelty/Originality: The ability of human resources (HR) of community members is reliable so that it has implications for the quality and quantity of the Village Fund Allocation itself. This research recommends further research on the role of government in encouraging community involvement in development.

FACTORS AFFECTING LOCAL AUTHORITIES’ WASTE MANAGEMENT (THE CASE OF KATUMBAN DISTRICT, SAMUTSAKORN PROVINCE, THAILAND)

The purpose of this article is to study the factors that affect the participation in management of community waste. Studying the factors affecting community participation in waste management might become a way to find how to manage wastes in the community of the Khaerai Sub-district, Katumban District, Samutsakorn Province of Thailand. This research is designed as a mixed research, that is, both qualitative and quantitative. The tools used to collect quantitative and qualitative data were as follows: 1) The tool used in quantitative collection is a questionnaire divided into 4 sections as follows. Part 1: Analysis of public data on the Khaerai Sub-district Administration Organization. Part 2: Analysis of knowledge on waste management in the community of Khaerai Sub-district. Part 3: Analysis of the factors affecting people’s participation in waste management in the sub-district in question. Part 4: Analysis of household solid waste management in Khaerai Sub-district. 2) Tools used for collection of qualitative data included observations and in-depth interviews on the issues related to community’s involvement in waste management.
 Our research results demonstrate that most of the people in the sub-district in question are involved in reducing the volume of household waste. They always participate in separation of waste types before disposing them. The study on the solid waste management system of Khaerai Sub-district Administration Organization found that the Administration applies comprehensive community waste management, integrated with waste management. To manage the garbage at its source, dividing the garbage into four categories is used (thus, there are four cans). This helps collecting solid waste more efficiently and thus reduce the contamination of that waste that potentially can be reused. The focus should be maintained on waste sorting and also on organization of the related projects and activities. Additional measures may include providing a new waste facility for future solid waste and also promoting more ways to get rid of waste at its source. Using the participatory principles in waste management gives people more freedom in options’ selection, and this, in its turn, may boost the efficiency of waste collection and waste management overall.

IntroductionCommunity participation is rapidly being viewed as a requirement for the successful acceptance of health services; it integrates a complicated process which involves customs, beliefs, culture and power relations, not only structures and policies. Yet, there is a wide knowledge gap and changes favouring community participation in primary health care is still minimal. This study aims to assess the process indicators and other factors influencing community participation in the delivery of primary health care.MethodsThis descriptive cross-sectional study using qualitative methods was conducted in Ibadan South East Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria between July and September, 2015. The interview and Focus Group Discussion guides centred around five participation indicators of needs assessment, leadership, resource mobilization, organization and management was used to collect data. A total of 12 in-depth interviews and four FGDs were conducted among male and female respondents consisting PHC service providers and community members purposively selected from four wards of the LGA. Spidergrams were constructed to visualize the levels of community participation from respondents' opinions.ResultsAbout 51.1% of the 45 respondents (with mean age 45.5 ± 8.09 years) were males. The respondents view community participation in the delivery of PHC in the LGA as being wide (open). Majority of the service users believe and agree that the level of community participation in their wards is about average while the service providers believed that participation was very high. However, respondents identified female representation, collaboration with pre-existing community structures, top-down and bottom-up approach to service delivery as factors affecting community participation in PHC delivery.ConclusionThis study provides a baseline data on community participation in the delivery of primary health care. Community participation is still an important principle in the delivery of primary health care and it guarantees the positive changes desired in the uptake and sustainability of primary health care programmes.

Constraints of community participation in protected area-based tourism planning: the case of Malawi

ABSTRACTAn approach to tourism development that emphasises the need for community participation in tourism planning is advocated as a pathway to sustainable tourism and poverty alleviation. However, it is argued that the community participation concept originated in the developed world and faces different and context-specific limitations when applied in developing countries. This paper examines the implementation of local community participation in planning associated with ecotourism in protected areas in Malawi. The views of villagers, along with other key stakeholders, including ecotourism operators, protected area management agencies, government departments and non-governmental organisations were investigated through a qualitative study undertaken around the two case-study sites of Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, and was thematically analysed. The findings reveal significant limiting factors affecting community participation in ecotourism planning in Malawi, including: apathy; inadequate financial resources; inadequate information; low education levels; unfair distribution of benefits; lack of trained human resources; a centralised public administration; lack of coordination; and human–wildlife conflicts. The findings indicate the need for both greater advocacy of community participation, and the need to incorporate specific strategies which can facilitate community participation that are tailored to developing country contexts.

A Systematic Review on Factors Affecting Community Participation towards Polio Immunization in Nigeria

Several publications have been written and reviewed to urge efforts reducing the rate of infant morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Scientific innovations and research for efficient immunization has been able to reduce the spread of poliomyelitis across the world and make this vaccine preventable disease a history. However, immunization coverage and poliomyelitis disease eradication seems to be cost effective and has continued to falter in Nigeria (Nnenna et al, 2013) due to various factors; attitude, culture, beliefs, religions, politics, economy, conspiracies, boycotts and human suspicions. The main objectives of this study are; to identify the potential factors affecting immunization coverage in Nigeria and provide recommendations towards total poliomyelitis eradication. Four electronic databases including Science Direct, Springer Link, Pub-Med and MedLine were used to access over 52 academic journal articles where detailed inclusion and exclusion criteria were adopted to select various studies related to polio immunization within the Nigerian context, but only 18 were found to be related to the topic and met inclusion criteria, using search engines like Freefullpdf, HotBot and Google Scholar. Studies pertaining polio eradication conducted in Nigeria from 2010-1014 were included in this study. Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) or community participation in polio immunization had been made priority. The study was carried out from May to September 2014. Further research should explore the factors affecting community participation in polio immunization particularly on parents’ beliefs and attitudes towards poliomyelitis disease as well as design possible plans to engage community leaders achieving total immunization coverage as a whole. Factors affecting community participation in the CDTI program in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Up to 4 million people in Tanzania are at risk for the parasitic disease onchocerciasis. A treatment program, Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI), has made significant gains in prevention and treatment. Understanding factors affecting participation could help boost treatment coverage and sustain gains made in controlling onchocerciasis in endemic areas. To explore community-perceived factors related to participation in and sustainability of the CDTI program in southwest Tanzania. Multilevel triangulation design using surveys, focus group discussions (FGDs), and semistructured interviews to collect data in two villages in the Morogoro Rural District of Tanzania. In total, 456 villagers participated in the survey and 42 in FDGs. Five community-directed distributors (CDDs) and three community health workers were interviewed. High levels of awareness of onchocerciasis (90%) and methods of prevention and treatment (95%) were reported. Over 75% of participants knew how ivermectin was distributed and 74% have taken the drug. Over 90% of villagers knew that distribution of the drug was for treatment and prevention. Only 43% knew the cause of onchocerciasis. Through FGDs, villagers reported barriers to participation, including lack of comprehensive understanding of the disease, fears of medication, distrust of the method determining dose, lack of health education materials, insufficient CDD-resident communication, and inflexible drug distribution mechanisms. Sustaining programs without supporting growth of CDDs and reinforcing education of communities could lead to a decrease in treatment and an increase in the public health threat. This research uncovered a need for more effective community education and sensitization. Understanding barriers to participation in community-based programs can assist public health and community health nurses and key stakeholders including Ministries of Health and local and regional health systems in the development of education and support materials to enhance health literacy and encourage program participation.

The Experience of Senior Stroke Survivors: Factors in Community Participation among Wheelchair Users

This qualitative study investigated the lived experience of senior stroke survivors who used prescribed wheelchairs in their home and community. The study involved semi-structured, in-depth interviews that were conducted with 10 participants, aged 70 to 80, who had used a wheelchair for a mean of 5.6 years. All participants used manual wheelchairs and two additionally used a power wheelchair and a scooter. A constant comparative inductive method of analysis of the data yielded several themes which are examined within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework of body functions and structure, activity limitations, participation, and contextual factors. Overall, the wheelchair, manual or power, was an enabler of community participation among the participants. However, the wheelchair's use also created problems, such as limiting destinations and creating increased dependence on others. A balance scale model was proposed to facilitate an understanding of how the factors affecting community participation interact in this population. This model can assist occupational therapists who prescribe wheelchairs for stroke clients for use in the community.
