Access to food and food quality: perception of the homeless population

Objective To understand the perception of access to food and food quality for the street population. Methods This qualitative descriptive study was performed in a Reference Center for the Homeless Population in the south-central region of Belo Horizonte (MG). A semi-structured script was used to conduct interviews with 18 participants. Data collection occurred between December 2020 and January 2021. The thematic analysis of the material, as proposed by Bardin, made it possible to elaborate three empirical categories. Results The public interviewed was male, with a mean age of 43 years, and a mean time on the streets of 44.6 months. Access to food came from donations, meals at government institutions, and acquisition when income was available. Difficulties were reported regarding the quantity and quality of food, acquisition of meals on weekends, feelings of fear and anguish in the face of hunger, lack of food, and social stigma, which were aggravated by COVID-19. Conclusion As in this scenario of social inequalities the access to food is not guaranteed, implementing public policies of social protection is necessary to guarantee basic rights.

Faces of hunger: an intersectional approach to children's right to food in the United Kingdom

AbstractThis article explores the extent to which the right to food is currently enjoyed by children within the United Kingdom (UK) using image analysis of the food parcels received by children eligible for free school meals during the COVID‐19 pandemic. It argues that child food poverty serves as an illustration of the failings of neoliberalism in the UK context, which had already been observed prior to the pandemic in relation to the current Universal Credit system. The article adopts an intersectional approach, connecting the increased risk of food insecurity experienced by Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) children from low‐income backgrounds to the broader notions of racial capitalism and food oppression. It concludes by offering proposals to target inequalities and improve the realization of the right to food for all children in the UK, which could be adopted by other states to enhance the protection of children's right to food around the globe.

Golden culinary landscapes: A legacy of the palatial female vision in the face of hunger

This study analyzes the feminine culinary universe of Early Modernity in a society marked by food crises and socio-cultural change. To do so, it examines two handwritten recipe books dated between the 16th and 17th centuries. Both examples represent a specific typology of works that is typical of a domestic and private environment. A non-experimental investigation is carried out that consists of an initial descriptive study of the structure of the same. This is followed by a correlational analysis where the relationship between both compliled works is evaluated through the model of recipes, raw materials used, exposed culinary techniques and the final purpose of the food preparations. The results show the permanence of a Greco-Latin culture in the gastronomy of the time with the presence of a strong Moorish influence and a still scarce incidence of the American raw materials. It can be concluded that the formation of this type of Golden Age food pattern had great continuity with previous periods in terms of taste, the transmission of cooking knowledge and the memory of a very sweet and spicy palate.

Hunger increases delay discounting of food and non-food rewards

How do our valuation systems change to homeostatically correct undesirable psychological or physiological states, such as those caused by hunger? There is evidence that hunger increases discounting for food rewards, biasing choices towards smaller but sooner food reward over larger but later reward. However, it is not understood how hunger modulates delay discounting for non-food items. We outline and quantitatively evaluate six possible models of how our valuation systems modulate discounting of various commodities in the face of the undesirable state of being hungry. With a repeated-measures design, an experimental hunger manipulation, and quantitative modeling, we find strong evidence that hunger causes large increases in delay discounting for food, with an approximately 25% spillover effect to non-food commodities. The results provide evidence that in the face of hunger, our valuation systems increase discounting for commodities, which cannot achieve a desired state change as well as for those commodities that can. Given that strong delay discounting can cause negative outcomes in many non-food (consumer, investment, medical, or inter-personal) domains, the present findings suggest caution may be necessary when making decisions involving non-food outcomes while hungry.

Insect Behavior and Physiological Adaptation Mechanisms Under Starvation Stress.

Intermittent food shortages are commonly encountered in the wild. During winter or starvation stress, mammals often choose to hibernate while insects—in the form of eggs, mature larvae, pupae, or adults opt to enter diapause. In response to food shortages, insects may try to find sufficient food to maintain normal growth and metabolism through distribution of populations or even migration. In the face of hunger or starvation, insect responses can include changes in behavior and/or maintenance of a low metabolic rate through physiological adaptations or regulation. For instance, in order to maintain homeostasis of the blood sugar, trehalose under starvation stress, other sugars can be transformed to sustain basic energy metabolism. Furthermore, as the severity of starvation increases, lipids (especially triglycerides) are broken down to improve hunger resistance. Starvation stress simultaneously initiates a series of neural signals and hormone regulation processes in insects. These processes involve neurons or neuropeptides, immunity-related genes, levels of autophagy, heat shock proteins and juvenile hormone levels which maintain lower levels of physiological metabolic activity. This work focuses on hunger stress in insects and reviews its effects on behavior, energy reserve utilization, and physiological regulation. In summary, we highlight the diversity in adaptive strategies of insects to hunger stress and provides potential ideas to improve hunger resistance and cold storage development of natural enemy insects. This gist of literature on insects also broadens our understanding of the factors that dictate phenotypic plasticity in adjusting development and life histories around nutritionally optimal environmental conditions.

Preserving Dignity in the Face of Hunger

Hunger in the United States has become commonplace. Food pantries are now regularly used by millions of people. Once thought to be used by the destitute, today they are frequented by families, students, the elderly people who hold full-time jobs, and people who thought they would never have to seek assistance to have enough to eat. Viewing food pantries as a major foodways resource, this study focuses on how a New England food pantry seeks to give not just food but also integrity, respect, and hope. It employed a client satisfaction survey as part of an evaluation of the effectiveness of their food pantry and used the data for organizational transformation. This study shows how organizations can destigmatize the requesting food process and provide services in a humane way that treats hungry people as neighbors and friends, not burdens and failures.

Hungry people in the rich world-a study of poverty turning lethal

America is the richest country in the world. And yet tonight, thousands of your neighbours will go to bed hungry. It may be your child's schoolmate who is undernourished and has difficulty learning on an empty stomach. Or it could be a co-worker, a working mother whose low-wage job doesn't make ends meet. Perhaps it's an elderly neighbour who has to make a decision whether to delay filling a prescription or buying groceries. The faces of hunger are as broad as the faces of America- David Nasby, General Mills Over 1.2 billion people - one in every five on Earth - live on less than $1 (U.S)a day. We're getting fatter and fatter in America, as well as in most of the rest of the world. Of course there are some starving people who don't have enough to eat or to sustain themselves, and this is a serious problem that should be addressed. Poverty does not have one clear definition. It is a complicated, multi-faceted concept. For this paper the term 'poverty' will be used to mean a lack of access to basic resources including food, clean water, sanitation, education and capital. Indeed, hunger is the worst manifestation of poverty and it will persist as long as poverty exists but Are people only hungry for food? No!. People are hungry everywhere, some for money, some for property, some for lust, some for love, some for power. As long as there is a desire for more and more, hunger cannot be eradicated. Hunger for food is fatal but equally debatable issue as other hungers of world. You give food to poor because they are hungry, they will be more hungry for better food then. Hunger is immortal but poverty can be murdered. The world has made great strides in the struggle against poverty, but we're a long way from realizing the benchmark of the Millennium Development Goals to cut in half by 2015 the proportion of people who suffer poverty. Growing population is not the cause of poverty, money is enough in the world infact more than it would have been but it is the distribution which is flawed. Richer getting richer and poorer getting poorer, it is not the mistake of poor or the luck of richer but the system itself which was created to make such difference whether it is brettonwoods conference or Americas plan to capture oil contented nations. The aim of this paper will be to prove, it is poverty alone which can be eradicated from the world by different mechanisms and policies for which every country should stand and deliver its part but not the hunger of desire to have more and more.

The Faces of Hunger

The relationship between students’ living in poverty and academic underachievement challenges schools across the nation. Poverty is particularly prevalent among children with disabilities. One detrimental condition of poverty that directly affects student development and academic achievement is food insecurity and hunger. With the increasing number of children identified as living in food-insecure households, it is inevitable that at some point, a teacher will work with a child suffering from hunger. With this article, the authors hope to assist educators in understanding poverty and its relationship to childhood hunger. Tips for identifying the signs and symptoms of hunger are shared. School- and classroom-level recommendations are made to aid in alleviating hunger in school-age children.

Hunger and Its Impact on Children: Where Do We Go From Here?

Though the face of hunger has changed over the years, hunger in the United States continues to be a serious challenge affecting our nation's health. As periods of episodic food insecurity become more common, it is critically important to explore better ways to identify those at risk and to understand the consequences, especially in children. On March 5, 2010, the National Institutes of Health, Division of Nutrition Research Coordination, held a meeting entitled, “Hunger and Health: Focus on Childhood Hunger” in Bethesda, Maryland. This article provides a synopsis of the presentations covering food security assessment methods, community-level anti-hunger initiatives, and research to understand the determinants and health consequences of child hunger. Priority research gaps are identified. This article not subject to US copyright law.

The Coming Food Coups

The doubling of grain prices over the past two years has already set off violent protests in over 30 developing countries and led to the overthrow of the Haitian prime minister Jacques Edouard Alexis. 1 Even though the media has provided extensive coverage and analysis of the causes of the increase in food prices, the potential political and security consequences have been given little attention. All food crises do not become famines, but the dynamics of rapid food price increases show some of the same characteristics of famines in their early stages. Though it is unlikely that famine will sweep across the globe, causing revolution, upheaval, and mass starvation, the consequences of the increase in food prices since 2004 could still be dire if prices continue to increase and a severe worldwide recession drastically reduces family income in developing countries. The term ‘‘crisis’’ is not, and should not be, used to describe recent price increases because such terminology only encourages doomsday visions in Washington and other capitals, which can lead to unwise policy responses. Policymakers need to be equipped with an analytical framework that can be used to minimize the humanitarian, political, and security consequences of the recent hike in prices. Famine theory*/ body of knowledge about the microeconomic dynamics of famines, the vulnerability of people to food price shocks, and the common patterns of behavior people use to try to survive in different stages of a famine*/ provide a foundation for such a framework.
