Designing intelligent superhydrophobic surfaces with versatile surface properties has garnered scholarly attention in field of heterogeneous catalysis, lab-on-chip, water harvesting, etc. However, the precise modulation of fluid adhesion on superhydrophobic surfaces, particularly when being applied as coatings, remains a challenge. Here we employ a “glue + powder” method for the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable droplet adhesion by embedding microparticles with mixed shapes. By adjusting the mixing ratio of rod-like and spherical particles, the sliding angle of superhydrophobic coating can be facilely controlled as well as the underwater bubble holding ability. During the dewetting process, the difference in the contact line lengths between micro-rod and micro-sphere contributes to the varying droplet adhesive force from 43.7 μN to 109.4 μN, which corresponds to the sliding angle change of a 10 μL droplet from 9.6° to 45.7°. Furthermore, by mixing fumed silica with branched structure, the lowest range of the rolling-off angle adjustment can be extended down to 0.5°, showing a precise and universal strategy for tuning the surface adhesion. On the basis of the meticulous manipulation of surface adhesion, controlling processes of single droplet and droplets accumulation can be fulfilled, with implications for enhancing the functionality of current superhydrophobic materials. Taking the advantage of the convenient and reliable fabrication method, a series of demonstration including manual droplet holders, multi-tiered droplet capturing interface, droplet sieving platforms, and gravity-driven droplet reactors has been realized. We envision that the precise control of droplet adhesion on superhydrophobic materials should further provides substantial opportunities for innovating fluid manipulation systems possessing heightened operability and multifunctionality.

Fabrication of robust superhydrophobic surface on TC4 alloy by wire electrical discharge machining

Superhydrophobic metal surfaces have significant applications in various areas such as surface self-cleaning, resistance reduction, anti-corrosion, etc. However, inexpensive preparation methods for superhydrophobic surfaces with a good mechanical stability are still to be developed. In this study, microarray structures on TC4 alloy were readily fabricated using a wire electrical discharge machining technology. Following the treatment with a fluorinating reagent, the microarray surface exhibited excellent superhydrophobic properties, where the largest contact angle and the smallest sliding angle reached 159° and 3°, respectively. Influences of the dimensions of microarray structure on the TC4 alloy surface wettability were also investigated in this study. Experiments show that this superhydrophobic surface possesses favorable self-cleaning, good mechanical stability, and promising anti-corrosion properties. In addition, by controlling the dimensions of the microstructure a superhydrophobic surface with a gradient wettability was also fabricated, which exhibits the property of doing nondestructive transportation of liquids.

Fabrication and anti-corrosion performances of robust superhydrophobic surface on NAB via solution-etching

A labyrinth microstructure interconnected by micron and submicron acicular structures was successfully prepared by immersing nickel-aluminum bronze in 9 wt% FeCl3·6H2O solution at room temperature for 40 min. After being modified with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS-17), the microstructure surface displays robustly low-adhesion superhydrophobicity, and the water contact angle is above 160 ° on it. In addition, the superhydrophobic surface exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and stability in 3.5wt % NaCl aqueous solution and corrosion solution with different pH values.

Fundamental characteristics of biomimetic superhydrophobic surface of nitinol alloy fabricated via laser cauterization and FAS modification

Biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces draw inspiration from the biological realm, seeking to replicate and refine their superhydrophobic properties. Fabricating super-hydrophobic surface on nitinol has significant application value in medicine, biomedical science, industry, and micro electric system due to the special performance of this material with super-hydrophobicity. In this study, we achieved a super-hydrophobic surface on a laser-processed rough nitinol surface through FAS modification, and its corrosion resistance in salt electrolytes was evaluated using potentiodyjnamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The resulting indicated that the fabricated super-hydrophobic surface exhibited superior corrosion resistance performance. Besides, the mechanical properties of the material were also evaluated, revealing a reduction in contact angle by 2.04 and 2.82 times as well as enhanced wear its resistance. Furthermore, the promoting mechanism of chemical and abrasion stability were systematically elucidated based on scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), 3D optical profiling, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These findings are anticipated to provide a deeper understanding of the fabrication of super-hydrophobic surfaces on nitinol alloys, thereby strengthening their potential for practical industrial and biomedical applications.

Fabrication and characterization of durable superhydrophobic and superoleophobic surfaces on stainless steel mesh substrates

Introduction. This study explores the fabrication of durable superhydrophobic and superoleophobic surfaces on stainless steel mesh, inspired by natural structures like lotus leaves. Achieving superoleophobicity, especially with enhanced durability, is challenging due to the lower surface tension of oils. Methodology. This novel technique involves using Perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTES) and silicon dioxide nanoparticles to create re-entrant structures, low surface energy, and high roughness. This cost-effective approach ensures simplicity without requiring expensive equipment. Results. The resulting surfaces exhibit remarkable superoleophobic properties, with hexadecane and soybean oil contact angles reaching 170° and 163.8°, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy confirms successful fabrication, and wear abrasion tests demonstrate mechanical durability, with contact angles remaining high even after cyclic loading and sandpaper abrasion. Conclusion. This study presents a pioneering, cost-effective method for fabricating durable superoleophobic surfaces on stainless steel mesh. These surfaces hold promise for applications in self-cleaning coatings and oil-repellent materials.

Comparison of Anti-Icing, Antifouling, and Anticorrosion Performances of the Superhydrophobic and Lubricant-Infused Coatings Based on a Hollow-Structured Kapok Fiber.

The superhydrophobic surface and slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS)/lubricant-infused surface (LIS) have attracted increasing attention owing to their multifunctionality. However, their practical applications face several problems such as complex and inefficient preparation technology, loss of lubricant, and fragile microstructures. Therefore, new strategies for preparing microstructures must be developed for constructing superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused coatings. Herein, a low-cost and high-efficiency method for developing superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused coatings based on in situ grown TiO2 on the surface of a hollow kapok fiber (KF) is reported. The anti-icing, antifouling, and anticorrosion performance of the superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused coatings are compared. The superhydrophobic coating reduces the formation and accumulation of ice. The lubricant-infused coating exhibits an extremely low ice adhesion strength and durable anti-icing properties. The superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused coatings show the outstanding antifouling property of diatom; the superhydrophobic surface exhibits superior stability over LIS without an external force field. The lubricant-infused coating shows excellent corrosion resistance and durability when immersed in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The superhydrophobic coating loses its protection as a result of the corrosion media permeating the metal substrate via the electrolytic cell and coating interface, and the lubricant-infused coating provides lasting corrosion resistance because of the lubricant filling into the interface. Although the superhydrophobic coating is fragile and the lubricant-infused coating will lose lubricant, this simple and convenient approach can be repeated to keep the coatings active. This study provides new inspiration for the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces and LIS based on natural products.

Directional motion of water droplets enhances anti-icing failure of structural superhydrophobic surfaces

Preventing ice formation on solid surfaces is a crucial concern in various applications, such as aircraft de-icing and protecting electrical transmission cables. One approach to combat ice or frost formation involves the fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces with micro- or nanostructures. However, some research suggests that the effectiveness of these superhydrophobic surfaces in preventing ice formation may be compromised under conditions of high humidity and low temperatures. Many researchers attribute the resistance of the wetting transition from the Cassie-Baxter state to the Wenzel state on superhydrophobic surfaces to Laplace pressure difference. However, according to molecular dynamics simulations and physical experiments, we find that the impact of Laplace pressure difference depends on the relative size of water droplets and air pockets on the structure. If the size of water droplets is smaller than the characteristic length of the air pockets, directional motion due to Laplace pressure difference and van der Waals force leads to water droplet aggregation and accelerates the ice formation and failure of anti-icing measures. Therefore, our research offers significant insights into the mechanical mechanisms that contribute to the failure of anti-icing techniques on structural superhydrophobic surfaces. This understanding is critical for the design of effective anti-icing or icephobic surfaces.

Fabrication of robust superhydrophobic surface on silicone rubber

Robust superhydrophobic surfaces with periodic array structures composed of circular silica islands on silicone rubber substrates were fabricated using a combination of multi-laser exposure and chemical modification. Abrasion tests with sandpaper demonstrate that hard silica regions on the surface can protect the silicone rubber region from external damage, resulting in long-lasting superhydrophobicity. Moreover, with an increase in area fraction and a decrease in array hole radius, the wear of the filled superhydrophobic silica is slowed while the protection for the silicone rubber region is enhanced. Particularly, the optimum surface geometry had an area fraction of 35 % and array hole radius of 100 μm retaining its hydrophobicity up to 63 times of abrasion, eight times more than that of the superhydrophobic surface processed by lasers alone. The results of a sand impact test confirmed the resulting surface's resilience in an aeolian sand environment. This research demonstrated the feasibility of producing robust, superhydrophobic surfaces on flexible silicone rubber substrates and providing a foundation for improving and innovating related products.

Fabrication and Characterizations of Superhydrophobic Surface with Superior Corrosion Inhibition on Q345b Steel Substrate

AbstractIn this work, a coherent and cost‐effective method is developed to achieve superhydrophobicity and excellent corrosion resistance on Q345B steel surfaces. The method involves sequential etching with hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid, passivation with potassium permanganate, treatment with bis‐(γ‐triethoxysilylpropyl)‐tetrasulfide (KHSi69，BT), and modification with hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles. The effects of etching and passivation time, including SiO2 doping ratio on the wettability and corrosion resistance of the prepared surfaces are investigated. The results demonstrate that the surface exhibits a micro–nano multilayer and modified nano‐multiscale cluster structure which has a contact angle (CA) of 155.8 ± 1.7° and a sliding angle (SA) of 5 ± 0.5° by employing the following conditions: hydrochloric acid etching time of 10 min, hydrofluoric acid etching time of 25 min, passivation time of 300 min, and a 3 wt% SiO2 doping ratio. Moreover, the surface displays extremely weak droplet adhesion and excellent self‐cleaning properties. Furthermore, the corrosion inhibition of the prepared steel surface is evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicate that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the superhydrophobic surface is enhanced by about 89.95% compared to the traditional two‐step processing involving etching and modification. These findings expand the potential applications of steel.

Laser-based fabrication of superhydrophobic carbide surfaces from waste plastics

We report a procedure for fabricating superhydrophobic carbides with femtosecond laser-assisted carburization of metals, semiconductors, and oxides from waste plastics. To form a concentrated plastic dispersion, plastic is laser-ablated in toluene. Hydrogenated carbides are synthesized by applying the dispersion drop by drop onto the target surface, and then employing femtosecond laser scanning. Hydrogenated carbides of tungsten, silicon, and zirconium were syntehszied, and they depicted exceptional hydrophobic properties. Hierarchical structuring further promoted the hydrophobicity of these hydrogenated carbides. A water contact angle ∼ 168○ and roll-off angle ∼ 6○ were observed. Further, the samples retained hydrophobicity after 30 days of exposure to ambient air and 100 ○C thermal treatment. Our study holds equal significance from both environmental and technological perspectives, as it not only eliminates the use of fluorinated compounds but also contributes to environmental remediation by converting waste plastics into valuable superhydrophobic carbides.

Investigating bio-based solvents as a sustainable alternative in the formulation and fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces

Organic solvents can be highly toxic to humans, causing damage to the tissues and toxin metabolizing systems. Petroleum-based solvents (such as n-hexane) are likely to trigger endocrine disruption in humans regularly exposed to them. Given this, there is still a high demand for petroleum-based solvents, as they can be used to fabricate materials for various high-performance products. In addition, extensive environmental damage is also caused by petroleum-based solvents. This biological and environmental harm has been the main cause of the demand for sustainable and cost-effective development of environmentally non-hazardous solvent systems. An area targeted to achieve this is bio-based solvent alternatives. In this report, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF), a bio-based solvent, is explored as an alternative solvent in the development of superhydrophobic surfaces, replacing n-hexane. This model system explores the factors considered when exploring the implementation of bio-based solvents in the development of highly advanced materials. In this research, both 2-MeTHF/n-hexane are used in the formulation/deposition of superhydrophobic polymer–nanoparticle composites (SPNCs). SPNCs developed using 2-MeTHF have water repelling functionality like those developed using n-hexane, while also demonstrating performance enhancements. Overall, this solvent exchange is aimed to serve as an example of what can be achieved in similar systems to enhance the sustainability of chemical processes that require organic solvents.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Water-Pinning Surfaces through Integration of Silica Colloids into Cellulose Nanocrystals.

The water-pinning effect is a phenomenon in which water droplets adhere to a surface and do not roll off, even when the surface is tilted or turned upside down. This effect holds great potential for applications in various areas, such as dew collection in arid regions, anti-drip function for a greenhouse, and liquid transport and control. However, creating surfaces that exhibit this effect poses challenges, necessitating materials with both hydrophobicity and high adhesive force along with a scalable, cost-effective method to produce the essential geometries that have not yet been established. To address these challenges, we propose a straightforward coating approach involving silica nanoparticles (SiO2) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to fabricate artificial water-pinning surfaces. We assessed the water-pinning ability of the coated surface through measurements of the contact angle, contact radius, and hysteresis. Remarkably, the coated surface exhibited a contact angle of approximately 153.87° and a contact radius of around 0.89 mm when a 10 μL water droplet was applied, demonstrating its resistance to rolling off, even at a tilting angle of 90°. The droplet only began to fall when its volume reached approximately 33 μL, requiring a substantial water pinning force of 323.4 μN. We also investigated the physicochemical characteristics of the SiO2@CNC coating surface, including morphology, chemical composition, and chemical structure, to unravel the underlying mechanism behind its water-pinning ability. Our proposed fabrication method offers a promising avenue for the development of functional biopolymer-based surfaces capable of precisely manipulating water droplets.

Fabrication of superhydrophobic surface by a dimensional change in surface topography of microchannel on polymer substrate through induction-aided hot embossing: parametric investigation and optimization

Hot embossing (HE) is a micro-fabrication technique employed to create micron-scale patterns on the polymer substrate. An in-house induction-assisted hot embossing (IHE) setup was fabricated to complete the embossing in a short duration as compared to traditional hot embossing process. This work alters the polymer surface topography to make it superhydrophobic for self-cleaning. Fiber laser machining was used to produce four-microchannel designs on an Aluminum-6061 plate in which the microchannel width was varied from 600 μm to 150 μm while maintaining a constant adjacent distance of 300 μm. This textured plate is employed as a mold in the IHE setup. IHE process parameters, embossing temperature, pressure, time, and deembossing temperature were varied to emboss the mold designs on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate. Thereafter, the embossed microchannel height, surface roughness, and water contact angle perpendicular to the embossed microchannels (WCA⟂) were calculated. The parametric analysis examined how operational factors affected the output. The experiment was done as per the central composite design (experimental design) part of the design-of-experiments useful in the response surface model. Parametric research demonstrates that embossed microchannel height and width had a maximum effect on WCA⟂. Type-IV microchannels with 150 μm width demonstrated the highest WCA⟂. The WCA⟂ was mostly impacted by embossed microchannel height; hence a regression model was created using type-IV channel height data. Analysis of variance showed that embossing temperature mainly impacts microchannel height. The recently invented Jaya-algorithm optimized this model to increase embossed microchannel height and WCA⟂. Setting the parameters at the best level predicted by Jaya-algorithm yielded an embossed microchannel height inaccuracy of 2.18%. The WCA⟂ measured on the surface of a sample prepared at the best parameters was found to be 154.71° 2°. Lastly, FTIR (Fourier-transform-infrared-spectroscopy) test showed no chemical composition change between the embossed and bare samples.

Recent Advances in Fabrication of Durable, Transparent, and Superhydrophobic Surfaces.

Transparent superhydrophobic coatings have been extensively investigated due to their ability to provide self-cleaning properties for outdoor applications. However, the widespread implementation of these coatings on a large scale is impeded by the challenges of poor durability and complex fabrication procedures. In this review, the fundamentals and theories governing the mutually exclusive properties of superhydrophobicity, optical transparency, and susceptibility to wear are introduced, followed by a discussion of representative examples of advanced surface design and processing optimizations. Also, robust evaluation protocols for assessing mechanical and chemical stabilities are briefed and potential research directions are presented. This review can offer the research community a better understanding of durable and transparent superhydrophobic surfaces, thereby facilitating their development for real-world applications.

The thermodynamic stability of the Cassie–Baxter regime determined by the geometric parameters of hierarchical superhydrophobic surfaces

Understanding the geometric parameters of hierarchical superhydrophobic surfaces and their impact on the thermodynamic stability of the Cassie-Baxter regime are invaluable for surface wettability–related applications. Herein, we fabricated hierarchical micro-microstructured silicone rubber surfaces having superhydrophobic properties via an industrially applicable direct replication method. The mold inserts were fabricated using photochemical milling, laser ablation, and wet chemical etching to create different hierarchical levels. We calculated surface roughness ratios and equilibrium contact angles and considered the contribution of sub-microstructures in the wettability properties via physical and statistical analyses. Comparing the calculated theoretical wettability properties and experimental measurements revealed a good agreement among all samples because of the accurate predictions of the governing wetting regime. It was worthwhile insights into the design and fabrication of superhydrophobic structured surfaces. The presence of superimposed sub-microstructures produced desirable water-repellency properties because of the reduced solid–liquid contact area as low as 0.086. Given the primary importance of the Cassie–Wenzel wetting transition on the design and fabrication of superhydrophobic surfaces, we evaluated the thermodynamic persistence of the Cassie–Baxter regime by analyzing the energy barrier to be overcome by droplets with various volumes. Finally, we discuss the contribution of the dimensional parameters of microstructures on the stability of the Cassie–Baxter regime.

Long-time durability of superhydrophobic surface fabricated by laser texturing and carbon soot

In this work, a novel approach to fabricate highly durable superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) with exceptional long-term performance. The demand for real-world applications in various areas such as self-cleaning, anti-bacterial, anti-icing, and water droplet non-wetting behaviour has driven significant attention towards SHSs fabrication. As inspired by the lotus leaf's hierarchical structure, which combines low surface energy and a micro/nanopillar structure to achieve Superhydrophobicity. To achieve this, a fibre laser marking machine has been used to create circular-shaped microstructures on an AISI 420 steel substrate, with a pitch and diameter of 100 µm. To further enhance the surface's water-repellent properties, a unique technique that involves the deposition of carbon soot onto the textured geometry using a candle has been adopted. This resulted in a surface with impressively low surface energy. The most notable aspect of our research is the long-term durability of the fabricated SHSs. Even after two years of exposure to ambient conditions, the surface maintained a maximum contact angle of 158.6°, which is remarkably high, exceeding 150°. This research shows a robust and enduring superhydrophobic surface fabrication method, highlighting its potential for diverse real-world applications.
