An Educational Institution in a Developing Country

The Institute of Extra Mural Studies of the National University of Lesotho is a development oriented non‐formal education organisation providing courses in Community and Leadership Development, Business Studies, Labour Studies, Credit Union and Co‐operative Development, part‐time University Degree Programmes and Businessmen's Training. The article explores the aims, philosophy and structure of the institution.

Teaching essay-writing to extra-mural students: An integrated approach

This article desribes an attempt made by researchers at the Research Centre for University Extra-mural Studies to improve the performance of extra-mural students following courses in the Adam Mickiewicz University by providing systematic training in the preparation of written assignments. A significant feature of the experiment was the integration of pedagogic material into the content of the subject-based courses.

Introduction to and experimental conditions during the first year of the GMR chronic inhalation studies of diesel exhaust

A chronic exposure study was initiated to determine the effects of diesel exhaust on the health of experimental animals. For this purpose, test atmospheres of clean air (control) or freshly diluted diesel exhaust at concentrations of 250, 750, and 1500 μg/m 3 were supplied to four 12.6 m 3 inhalation chambers which housed rats and guinea pigs. Diesel aerosol size and concentration, as well as chamber temperature and relative humidity, were continually monitored and controlled to maintain the exposure dose levels and an environment of 22±2°C and 50%±20% relative humidity. The concentrations of CO and NO x were found to be 5.8±1.0 mg/m 3 and 7.9±1.0 mg/m 3 above ambient in the chamber containing 1500 μg/m 3 of particulate. Animals were supplied from the chambers, on a random basis, for both intramural and extramural studies throughout the exposure period. The experiment ran uninterrupted for over twelve months with mean diesel particle mass concentrations within 2% of the target values.

Hill Pits, Blaenavon

The Hill Pits presents to the Industrial Archaeologist a number of interesting items for study and speculation. Not only are there the remains of the pits themselves, but also the major part of the system of communications that linked the workings with the Blaenavon Ironworks, now in the care of the Secretary of State for Wales. This system of communications comprises a tramroad and inclined plane with the remains of a brake engine at the head of the latter.This paper is the result of field work conducted under the auspices of the Department of Extra-Mural Studies, University College, Cardiff by the Blaenavon Class in Industrial Archaeology.

Et in arcadia ego: Politics and learning in Ghana

Fragments of an autobiography are of little interest in themselves, but they may be of help in putting together the history of the times from which they are remembered. In the pages which follow, which include such fragments, I have tried to pursue a simple theme. It is that of the export of ideas and institutions from Britain to a colonial country, and the difficulties which arose from their import into Ghana. I was no more than half oonscious of such problems during the 1950s when I was engaged in adult education. I was too busy enjoying myself in as devoted a way as I could under the aegis of the department of extra-mural studies, and the questions which troubled others became for me of academic interest only later when I began to look back at the relationship between the university at Legon and the government in Accra. What that relationship was and what it is today reflect a familiar theme. It can be restated by noting that the location of political power in Ghana after the first election in 1951, as under the present military Redemption Council, was out of line with the very high social status accorded the educated elite of the universities. Admittedly, there was nothing very new in that: the correspondence between political and social power is rarely exact. It is also easy as Professor Mackenzie once pointed out for observers to mistake one for the other, to look at institutions and the powers vested in them without noticing the sometimes rival, sometimes complementary, strength of a social hierarchy in which power may rest on a very different footing.1 In Ghana, however, in the decade before and after independence, the educated elite and the political leadership were sharply opposed. They were opposed in a very broad sense as "rival colonists". From 1945 onwards, graduates from the universities had begun to enter the public service, local government, the professions and business enterprises, replacing the British, and becoming a new administrative elite with direct access to the resources of the state. But in laying hold of the proto-independent state, they were opposed by the power of a nationalist party in the hands of a " political class on-the-make " which was certainly no less determined to exploit the resources they were beginning to control. Of course, such differences were often blurred by expediency and common sense: but they were " encapsulated ", so to speak, in the opposition of the university as an institution of privilege to the nationalist and today the military government as an apparatus of control.
