In a classroom exercise or extra credit assignment, I ask students in an introductory geology class to summarize the class with one page of art. The exercise requires students to synthesize and distill the most important concepts of a class into a visual piece that represents the sum of what they have learned. Students enjoy having the opportunity for expression; their results are creative and striking. The assignment enhances their learning experience and serves as a feedback mechanism for the teacher as well as a form of communication that can be shared with other students and outside the classroom.
