THE ROLE OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TEACHERS IN EXPLAINING STUDENTS' ATTITUDES OF TOLERANCE AT STATE HIGH SCHOOL 2 NORTH SANGATTA EAST KUTAI

This research aims to analyze the role of Islamic religious education teachers in developing students' attitudes of tolerance, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors faced by teachers in the process of developing students' attitudes of tolerance. This research uses a qualitative approach, and data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. In contrast, the analysis technique uses Miles and Huberman analysis techniques with data condensation, data presentation, and verification. The results of this research show that PAI teachers at SMAN 2 Sangatta Utara play a role in developing students' attitudes of tolerance, PAI teachers act as educators, teachers, mentors, trainers and role models. Apart from that, PAI teachers also play a role in teaching the values ​​of tolerance through discussions, case studies and extracurricular activities, as well as creating an environment that respects diversity by encouraging positive interactions between students from various religious backgrounds. Supporting factors in implementing multicultural education include teacher commitment, cooperation with parents and the community, and support from the school administration while inhibiting factors include new students who have difficulty adapting and lack of support from the home environment, which is often internally related.

Students’ e-learning use intention post-COVID-19

PurposeThe COVID-19 pandemic compelled educational institutions to shift from classroom interactions to electronic learning (e-learning). This study uses eTAM with usability dimensions to examine the use of e-learning for core academic activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leveraging the switching value framework, it investigates students’ preference for extending the use of e-learning to extracurricular activities post-pandemic. The study also integrates eTAM and the switching value framework to conceptualize students’ e-learning usage behavior in a synchronous learning environment.Design/methodology/approachStructural equation modeling was used to test the proposed research framework using a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through a survey conducted at two premier management institutes with broad national representation in India.FindingsThe result revealed that emotional cost had a more significant impact on perceived switching value compared to learning, sunk and reduced performance costs. Also, perceived switching value had a stronger influence on e-learning than the eTAM factors. Interestingly, learning support negatively influenced perceived ease of use and usefulness.Originality/valueThe study provides evidence that while eTAM largely explains e-learning usage during the pandemic, perceived switching value significantly influences its extended use post-pandemic. Our study challenges the belief that eTAM factors influence the continuous use of e-learning post-pandemic. The study insights can guide educational institutions, educators and policymakers in expanding the application of e-learning beyond the pandemic.

Studying the Effectiveness of Games as an Extracurricular Activity in a Higher Education Programming Course

ABSTRACTHigher Education programming courses usually present high levels of student failure and drop‐out rates. Given this context, the use of educational video games is proposed as a strategy to increase the students' motivation and engagement, thus helping diminish such rates. However, there is a lack of empirical studies examining such effects, especially when they are proposed outside the formal curriculum (i.e., extracurricular) and when the students are enrolled in different Higher Education bachelors. This paper presents a cross‐sectional study following a between‐subjects design with 315 students (168 assigned to the experimental condition, 147 to the control condition) enrolled in one of the following bachelors: B.S. in Computer Science (where programming is a core subject), and B.S. in Statistics (where it is not). The study spanned two consecutive academic years. The outcomes were evaluated through a pre‐/post‐test schema and comparison of final course results to measure the effect on learning (objective assessment) and a survey to get the students' perceptions (subjective assessment). In addition, the level of participation was analyzed and compared between bachelors, considering the optional nature of the activity. Results show statistically significant differences in learning outcomes between the students in the experimental condition and those in the control group, without clear differences between Bachelors (the results are positive for both). In the subjective assessment and participation, the results are also positive, but, in this case, statistically significant differences between bachelors have been observed. These positive outcomes suggest its potential applicability to other Higher Education and Engineering courses.

Nature, prevalence and determinants of mental health problems experienced by adolescents in south Asia: a systematic review.

Adolescence is a sensitive phase of human development where individuals, aged 10-19 years, are particularly vulnerable to developing mental health problems (MHPs). South Asia, home to 24% of the world's population, is mostly comprised of low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Most of the world's young people live in LMICs. This systematic review aims to assess the available evidence on the nature, prevalence and determinants of MHPs experienced by adolescents in south Asia. Following PRISMA guidelines, searches were conducted in four online databases (Ovid Medline, Ovid EMBASE, Ovid Global Health, Ovid PsycInfo), titles, abstracts, and full-texts were screened, data extracted and quality assessed. Extracted data were categorised into school-based studies (SBS) and non-school-based studies (NSBS). Data were further stratified according to country, MHPs and narratively synthesised. Of the 5847 records identified in the searches, 117 met inclusion criteria. Most (n=87) were SBS. Key MHPs reported across countries include anxiety disorders and depression. Wide ranges of prevalence rates were reported for anxiety in Indian SBS (1.5-81.6%) and NSBS (1.8-88.1%), and for depression, Pakistani SBS (21-79%) and Indian NSBS (0.4-98.5%). Determinants include individual characteristics; violent victimisation; poor family/home/school environment/peer relationships; already experiencing MHPs and substance use/abuse. Increased physical activity, adequate nutrition, safe/positive homes/family environment, being unmarried females, higher maternal education, peer support/friendship, higher education level and engaging in extra-curricular activities were protective of mental well-being. Prevalence of MHPs among south Asian adolescents appears high. Determinants include social, cultural, environmental and socioeconomic factors often beyond individual control. Mental health policies and programs and research appropriate to the cultural context, that address social determinants of MHPs and evidence gaps, are needed to tackle the significant mental health burden among south Asian adolescents. Peran Bank NTT dalam Meningkatkan Motivasi Menabung Dikalangan Pelajar SMAS Katolik Regina Pacis Bajawa

This study aims to analyze the role of Bank NTT in improving the learning motivation of students at Regina Pacis Bajawa Catholic High School. This research method uses a qualitative and descriptive approach through direct observation and interviews with Bank NTT. Bank NTT programs, such as scholarships, financial management training, motivational seminars, and extracurricular collaboration with schools, are thought to have a significant contribution to increasing student motivation and achievement. The results of the study indicate that these programs not only increase students' awareness of the importance of financial education and literacy, but also build self-confidence and a spirit of achievement. Collaboration in extracurricular activities creates a positive and conducive learning atmosphere. In conclusion, Bank NTT plays a strategic role as an educational partner that contributes to creating a quality young generation. This study emphasizes the importance of synergy between the financial and education sectors to support the development of superior human resources.

Bridging Borders with a Project-based Approach to Enhance Bidirectional Cultural Awareness in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning

Cultural awareness is essential in foreign language education. This paper explores two projects that exemplify the integration of cultural elements into foreign language learning involving both first language (L1) and second language (L2) cultures. The first project was initiated in the course “German Cinema”. It focuses on the legendary English-language sketch “Dinner for One”, which has been part of traditional New Year’s Eve entertainment in the German-speaking world for over sixty years. Students explored its significance within German culture through surveys, translation, creative adaptations and organised an imaginary festival. These activities foster intercultural dialogue and understanding. The second project, “Die goldene Meergundel” (The Golden Goby), is an extracurricular activity that integrates Thai culture with the German language. A Thai fairy tale was performed in Likay-style theatre, but was spoken and sung entirely in German. The blending of Thai folklore with German pronunciation can enhance both cross-cultural appreciation and linguistic proficiency. These case studies underscore the significance of enhancing bidirectional cultural awareness in foreign language teaching and learning. Educators can act as facilitators by engaging students in projects that transcend linguistic boundaries, effectively bridging cultural borders, and cultivating foreign language learners to be equipped with intercultural competence and global citizenship.

Pengaruh Organisasi Kemahasiswaan Terhadap Belajar Mahasiswa Difakultas Sains Dan Teknologi

Student activity in organizations plays an important role in developing knowledge and preparing them to enter the world of work. Through organizations, students are accustomed to conveying thoughts and ideas that can increase self-confidence and motivation to learn, which has a positive impact on academic achievement. This research aims to examine the role of student organizations in supporting student abilities, using descriptive methods. The research sample consisted of 10 students from the 2022/2023 information technology study program. The research results show that there is a significant influence between student involvement in student organizations on their learning achievement. Student organizations provide opportunities for students to develop their talents, interests and potential through productive, creative and practical activities carried out on campus, for example extracurricular activities, which in turn increase motivation and academic achievement. In addition, involvement in an organization can shape character, skills, self-confidence, as well as expand knowledge, insight and social networks. This research also reveals that students are involved in organizations not only for existence or popularity, but as a form of self-actualization. Therefore, it is recommended that the campus, such as the Deputy Chair III for Student Affairs and Study Programs, provide further support to encourage student organization activities that can improve student achievement. Overall, this research shows that involvement in student organizations has a significant positive relationship with learning motivation, which influences academic quality and preparation for the world of work.

Peran SD Negeri 15 Banyuasin III dalam Meningkatkan Pendidikan Karakter Siswa

Character education is an essential aspect of student development in elementary schools. This study aims to analyze the role of SDN 15 Banyuasin III in enhancing students' character education. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and questionnaires. The findings indicate that SDN 15 Banyuasin III has implemented various effective character education programs, such as extracurricular activities and moral value training. Furthermore, the active participation of teachers and parents significantly contributes to the success of these programs. However, challenges in implementation, such as resource limitations and a lack of understanding of character education, were identified. This study recommends enhancing collaboration between the school and the community to optimize character education at SDN 15 Banyuasin III.

Second screen use motivations of higher education students during online education

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine whether higher education students used a second screen during remote learning, identify the reasons for such usage, and assess their impact on academic performance. A mixed-methods design was employed, comprising 471 students (survey) and 10 students (semi-structured interviews) from a state university with distance education experience. The findings revealed that the majority of participants utilized a second screen, with smartphones being the preferred secondary device and laptops serving as the primary tool. Students who used a second screen for in-class activities showed high motivation and maintained an average GPA of three or higher. Those who used it for extracurricular activities exhibited low motivation, and an average GPA below 3. Students using a second screen for both in-class and extracurricular activities experienced interruptions in communication with instructors. The results underscore the significance of technological tools in distance education, emphasizing second-screen usage, motivation, and effects on academic achievement. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data, a cross-sectional design preventing causal inferences, and a qualitative sample size that may not fully capture the impact of second-screen use on learning outcomes. Further research involving larger populations is necessary to better understand and develop instructional technologies and second-screen use in education.

PELATIHAN DAN PERTUNJUKAN DRUMBAND BAGI SISWA SMP NEGERI 30 KABUPATEN MUARO JAMBI DALAM MENINGKATKAN KETERAMPILAN BERMUSIK

The Independent Curriculum in elementary to high schools (SD to SMA) is a challenge for schools to improve their ability in managing both learning and administration, so that what is aspired to in the mandate of the Constitution which reads "to educate the life of the nation" is something that is essential. Something that is quite urgent is the learning objectives, one of which is to improve cognition for students, which is the basis for this community service program, namely improving musical skills with a drumband training and performance program at SMPN 30 Muaro Jmabi. The skills program in the independent learning curriculum is strongly encouraged by being a leading government program (Ministry of Education and Culture) so that students can create something that fosters independence in determining and choosing the direction of life (future). The purpose of this community service program is that in addition to increasing interest and talent, it also provides space for creativity for students in carrying out music learning activities through extracurricular activities as intended by the independent curriculum. The community service program is a government program that is assigned to educators (Lecturers) in carrying out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. For that, of course there are scientific measurements called activity outputs, in this case the team will target outputs in the form of (1) National Seminar Proceedings. (2) Scientific Journals. (3) Publications on Electronic Media. (4) Activity Documentation Videos.

Manajemen Pembinaan Peserta Didik Dalam Meningkatkan Motivasi Belajar

This article further delineates the implementation of student development management through both curricular and extracurricular activity programs. The research employs a qualitative approach, specifically case study research focused on fieldwork. The study centers on the following aspects: First, the role of school principals in designing student development programs aimed at enhancing learning motivation. Second, the execution of student development programs with the objective of increasing learning motivation. Third, the oversight of the student development program by the principal. Pengaruh Pendidikan Akhlak terhadap Perilaku Siswa di Sekolah MAN 3 Medan

Moral education, which includes Islamic moral and ethical values, is integrated into the school curriculum through various methods, including lectures, discussions, and extracurricular activities. This study aims to evaluate the effect of moral education on student behavior at MAN 3 Medan School. This study uses a mixed approach, namely quantitative with surveys and qualitative through in-depth interviews through surveys analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics are used to describe the distribution and tendency of data, such as averages, medians, and percentages. The results of the study indicate that moral education has a significant impact on improving students' positive behavior. Students involved in the moral education program showed improvements in aspects of discipline, honesty, responsibility, and tolerance and empathy. In addition, moral education also helps reduce negative behaviors such as disobedience and disrespectful behavior. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating moral education into the school curriculum to shape the character of students with noble character. Educational institutions are advised to continue to strengthen moral education programs with innovative and relevant approaches, and involve the entire school community, including teachers, students, and parents.

Emotions, connectedness to nature and sustainable behaviour: investigating the effects of students’ engagement in extracurricular activities with living animals

ABSTRACT Several studies have shown how first-hand experiences with living animals can foster students’ connectedness to nature, even if there have been no studies on topic-specific emotions and sustainable behaviour. Using a retrospective questionnaire with qualitative and quantitative data from a cross-sectional sample of 211 school students, we investigated (1) predictors and (2) qualitative causes for experiencing enjoyment or fear when working with bees, (3) predictors of inclusion of nature in self (INS) and (4) predictors of attitudes towards sustainable behaviour. A subgroup of the students took part in an extracurricular activity focused on learning about honey bees (Apis mellifera) in a bee club. While the attendance in the bee club and individual demographic factors predicted the INS, the students reported different causes for these emotions. Furthermore, INS and enjoyment were predictors of students’ attitudes towards sustainable behaviour. Using a mediation model, we found that the bee club also fostered sustainable behaviour through INS as a mediator. Even when further studies are needed to clarify the causality and further antecedents of students’ emotions such as values, the results show how primary nature experiences from working with bees are connected to sustainable behaviour by fostering connectedness to nature and positive emotions.

Penerapan Islamic Worldview dalam Pembelajaran di MI Muhammadiyah Ngasem

Character education has an important role in forming individuals who are not only intellectually intelligent, but also have noble character. Islamic Religious Education (PAI) has a strategic role in developing the character of students, by integrating Islamic values ​​in all aspects of life. One of the approaches used is the application of the Islamic Worldview, which includes the Islamic perspective on God, humans, the universe, and relationships between people. This article discusses the application of the Islamic Worldview in learning at MI Muhammadiyah Ngasem, which aims to shape the character of students who are superior both academically and spiritually. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study at MI Muhammadiyah Ngasem, which involves observation, interviews and document analysis. The research results show that the application of Islamic Worldview through the integration of Islamic values ​​in the curriculum, moral education, balanced self-development, and Islamic extracurricular activities has a positive impact on increasing noble morals, empathy, social awareness, responsibility in learning, as well as increasing cooperation and tolerance. . However, there are challenges related to educators' understanding of the Islamic Worldview concept, difficulties in integrating Islamic values ​​in the existing curriculum, lack of student readiness and parental involvement in the learning process, difficulties in implementing contextual education, as well as limited learning facilities and resources.

Особенности обучения будущих учителей английского языка переводу американских шуток, содержащих национально-специфические реалии, на русский язык

The purpose of the study is to identify linguistic means of creating American jokes containing nationally specific realities and to determine strategies for their translation into Russian in order to teach undergraduates in language teaching areas to analyze linguistic means of creating a comic effect and translate the text elements containing units of humor within the framework of the discipline “Theory and Practice of Translation”, taking into account the possibility of application of acquired translation competence in future extracurricular teaching activities. The article presents three types of tasks for teaching undergraduates how to translate English-language jokes containing American realities. Specific ways of translating short comic texts with examples and comments are indicated and explained. Scientific novelty is determined by the development of a set of three types of tasks: diagnostic, structural and functional, and translation tasks proper tasks for the formation of skills in translating jokes containing English-speaking realities in order to teach future foreign language teachers to translate humor. The research shows ways to recreate the humorous effect in the translation language, based on the analysis of domestic and foreign studies of humor, both in terms of linguistic characteristics and features of jokes, and from the perspective of taking into account the peculiarities of perception of the translation result by Russian-speaking recipients in order to develop translation skills among students of language teaching areas. Practical recommendations are proposed for future foreign language teachers on the application of the skills and abilities acquired in the course of theory and practice of translation in the context of future circle and extracurricular teaching activities in secondary schools. A set of tasks has been created to develop skills in translating jokes containing English-language realities, based on the concepts of transparency and exoticism of reality, as well as the degree of preservation of absurdity in the situation described in the joke.

Classmates or Colleagues? How Elite Students Learn to Manage One Another

Abstract Using 122 interviews, this study examines how students at one elite U.S. university conceptualized the impacts of extracurricular participation during college. Scholars have argued that activities can yield valuable forms of capital for students at the primary, secondary, and college levels, yet these processes remain undertheorized. Applying Bourdieusian field theory, I found that respondents perceived three structural parallels between their student organizations and actual workplace contexts. Through clubs, students socialized one another to adopt new relational orientations that anticipated future careers navigating institutional hierarchies. Despite their university’s supposedly endless resources for activities, students paradoxically restricted one another’s access to clubs through elaborate recruitment practices that mirrored job hiring. Within clubs, respondents described learning to manage one another and relate in a detached manner as colleagues, rather than friends. While past research has explored how extracurricular activities shape individual outcomes, this study reveals how students themselves perceived the impacts of club involvement, specifically in an elite institutional context. Respondents’ experiences suggest that extracurricular activities may represent a key site of “status degradation ceremonies” that ultimately enhance elite institutions’ consecrating function.

The Extracurricular Carries the Mission: Historical Perspectives on Games and Sports in Jesuit Education

This article explores the role of extracurricular sports and activities in Jesuit education, tracing their historical development from the early modern period to the present. Contrary to the perception that Jesuit schools adopted extracurricular activities, including sports, solely in response to external cultural trends, the study highlights how these activities have been integral to Jesuit pedagogy’s holistic vision. Through examples from the early modern sources and a focus on the French and Northern American contexts between the nineteenth and early twenty centuries, the article reveals the ways in which sports, games, and physical education have contributed to fostering formative education within Jesuit institutions. Emphasizing the centrality of extracurricular activities for Jesuit pedagogy, the study sheds light on how Jesuit educational institutions uniquely align these activities with their educational philosophy, impacting students’ intellectual, physical, and moral formation.

Role of extracurricular activities in the development of leadership skills among the undergraduate Doctor of Physical Therapy students of Khyber Medical University and its affiliated institutes in Peshawar: A Cross-sectional study

Objective: To explore the role of extracurricular activities in the development of leadership skills among undergraduate Doctor of Physical Therapy students. Method: The cross-sectional study was conducted from March to October 2023 at the Khyber Medical University and its affiliated institutes in Peshawar, Pakistan, and comprised undergraduate Doctor of Physical Therapy students of either gender aged at least 18 years. Data was collected using a a pilot-tested questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS22. Results: Of the 340 students, 231(67.9%) were females and 109(32.1%) were males. The overall mean age was 21.55±1.75 years. The largest group was of students in the 7th semester 76(22.4%). Of the total, 131(38.5%) students were members of extracurricular societies, while 209(61.5%) were non-members. High-level leadership skills were found among the members compared to the non-members (p<0.001). Type of society (p<0.001) and gender (p=0.013) has a substantial association with leadership skills. Conclusion: The role of extracurricular activities in the development of leadership skills among undergraduate Doctor of Physical Therapy students was found to be significant. Pendidikan Karakter Dan Disiplin Dalam Esktrakurikuler Berkuda Di Pondok Pesantren PKP Al-Hidayah

Character education and discipline are important elements in shaping the superior personality of students, especially in the pesantren environment. This study aims to describe the implementation of character and discipline education through equestrian extracurricular activities at Pondok Pesantren PKP Al-Hidayah. The approach used is qualitative with a descriptive method, involving observation, interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The research results show that horseback riding extracurricular activities not only serve as a means of developing riding skills but also instill character values such as responsibility, honesty, cooperation, and courage. In addition, this activity trains discipline through strict rules related to training schedules, horse care, and adherence to instructors. The implementation of character education and discipline in horseback riding activities is supported by continuous coaching and a conducive pesantren environment. This research concludes that horseback riding extracurricular activities significantly contribute to shaping the character and discipline of students, making it an innovative character education model in Islamic boarding schools. Positive Psychology in Slovak Schools: The Path to Wellbeing

The article focusses on implementing the principles of positive psychology in the educational environment of Slovak high schools to improve students' well-being and resilience. The key objective is to analyse the impact of targeted interventions based on positive psychology on students' mental health using the standardised tool "Pohodoměr" (Well-Being Metre). The research was carried out on a sample of 68 high school students in Slovakia. Quantitative methods were applied, using the Pohodoměr tool, which measures various dimensions of mental well-being, including psychological resilience, social interactions, and academic participation. Data were collected online between September and October 2024 and validated using internationally recognised methodologies, such as the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS). The analysis revealed that students scored above average in areas such as goal orientation and family support. On the contrary, the lowest scores were observed in community involvement and problem-solving skills, indicating the need for targeted interventions aimed at developing social connections and stress management skills. The results also highlighted the critical role of teachers and school psychologists in fostering a supportive environment. The findings confirm the importance of applying positive psychology in the school setting and offer specific recommendations to improve student mental health and resilience. The introduction of programmes such as learnt optimism, the development of peer-to-peer support, and the expansion of extracurricular activities can contribute to the long-term improvement of school climate and students' psychological stability. The article provides a foundation for further research and the creation of methodologies that could be adopted by educational institutions not only in Slovakia but also internationally.
