Peranan PT IMC Ship Management Selaku Auditor Internal Terhadap Safety Management System di MV. Dewi Shinta Manggala

Internal audit activities are carried out to meet and implement the Safety Management System (SMS) rules so that safety on board ships is implemented in accordance with the ISM Code. In addition, an internal audit conducted by a shipping company can minimize the findings of an external audit of the Safety Management System (SMS). The purpose of this research is to find out the implementation process, obstacles and solutions for the implementation of MV internal audit. Dewi Shinta Manggala. The method carried out in this study is qualitative descriptive. Data collection was carried out by in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that the obstacles faced in the obstacles experienced in the internal audit process are the unsuitable time between the ship's schedule and the auditor resulting in delays, crew ratings that are not optimal in implementing the Safety Management System (SMS), and the crew's understanding of the Safety Management System (SMS) on board the ship which is considered to be still lacking. So that the efforts that must be made, namely the company's internal parties communicate well with each other, the company gives strict sanctions to crews who do not optimally implement SMS, the company requires crews to attend SMS training.

The impact of internal control of non-financial reporting-related weaknesses on audit fees: does external audit size matter?

This study intends to examine the impact of internal control of non-financial reporting-related weakness on the audit fees of corporations. To pursue the research objectives, two research questions are formalized: (i) How does internal control over non-financial reporting-related weakness (ICWN-FR) affect audit fees (ADF)?; (ii) What is the effect of external audit size on the link between ICWN-FR and ADF ?. Multiple regression models with 82 listed Jordanian companies from 2014 to 2020 used as the study sample reveal the following findings. Our findings underscore the importance of considering the characteristics of the audit firm when analyzing the relationship between ICWN-FR and audit fees. Companies audited by Big 4 firms may face greater scrutiny and potentially higher fees for ICWN-FR compared to those audited by non-Big 4 firms. While prior studies have explored various factors influencing audit fees and the impact of internal controls on audit costs, this research uniquely delves into the differential effects observed when companies are audited by different categories of audit firms. The study accentuates the significance of impeccable internal controls within non-financial reporting procedures and their far-reaching consequences on audit fees, thereby highlighting the imperative for corporations to give precedence to augmenting their internal control mechanisms.

The Impact of Ownership Structure on Tax Avoidance: Audit Quality ss Moderating Variable

Purpose: This research is aimed at giving empirical evidence related to the correlation of ownership and corporate tax avoidance as well as describing the moderating effect of audit quality.Method: The sample comprises 315 observations from manufacturing companies listed on the IDX (Indonesia Stock Exchange) during the period of 2015-2019. For data analysis, panel data regression techniques were employed to ascertain the effect of ownership on tax avoidance moderated by audit quality.Findings: The results indicated that institutional, family, and foreign ownership were positively related to corporate tax avoidance. Nevertheless, the effect of audit quality was found to moderate the correlation of family and foreign ownership to tax avoidance. Originality/Value: This research contributed fresh evidence that elevated external audit quality held a moderating effect on tax avoidance in family-owned companies and those under foreign ownership.

Study of the Relationship between the Rotation of External Auditors and Audit Quality

Purpose - The objective of this research is to study the relationship between external auditor turnover and audit quality. To do this, we chose two measures of audit quality, namely discretionary accruals and the auditor's opinion. Design/methodology/approach - Using a sample of 37 Tunisian companies listed during the period from 2015 to 2021, the paper uses a logistic regression to investigate the association between the quality of the audit and the rotation of the auditors. Findings - The results obtained based on linear and logistic regression invalidate the two hypotheses which assume on the one hand that a long-term mandate negatively influences the quality of the audit, on the other hand the assumption that the rotation of the auditors has a positive impact on the quality of the audit. Contrary to what was expected in our research, the results of the logistic regression show that a long-term audit mandate has a positive effect on audit quality. Research limitations/implications – This research may be of interest to many developing countries that has not a lot of studies on the audit turnover. Future research should focus on the link between audit turnover consequences to overcome the gap which might exist in the literature. Practical implications – Previous studies has shown how it is important to focus on audit opinion to reduce asymmetric information between managers and stockholders. And, this study offers some insights about audit shipping that should be analyzed to understand audit turnover. Originality/value – This research highlights the role of audit opinion in the rotation of auditors in emerging markets. Consideration of this relationship may contribute to the understanding of the auditor turnover in developing countries.

Financial crime is any activity that involves fraudulent or criminal behavior to gain personal financial gain. This is a criminal activity carried out by individuals or groups involved in financial crime activities, such as: money laundering, terrorism financing, fraud, tax evasion and identity theft. Financial crime has become a big problem and is detrimental to many parties, using increasingly sophisticated techniques, which requires a solution. In this research the author will focus on discussing banking financial crimes using information technology, because they seriously damage the reputation of financial institutions, destroy public trust, and cause significant financial losses. Banking must have a strategy to protect various technologies, information and data simultaneously, which requires coordination with all stakeholders in Indonesia. The aim of writing this journal is to determine trends, patterns, factors that influence, anticipate and punish banking financial crimes using information technology. The research uses qualitative methods with data collection methods using literature studies. The object of this research is secondary data in the form of banking financial crimes using information technology committed by perpetrators of banking financial crimes. The role of forensic audit is the best way to prevent and detect banking financial crimes using information technology in Indonesia. Forensic audit has the ability to provide statements based on its expertise.

Fair value and investment property in accounting literature: a review

Purpose This study aims to provide a timely review concerning the determinants and economic consequences of fair value reporting in real estate industry, as these topics have been gaining momentum in accounting literature recently. Design/methodology/approach Diverse editorial sources (e.g. Elsevier, Emerald, Meridian Allenpress, Springer, Sage, Taylor & Francis and Wiley-Blackwell) were consulted to identify relevant studies for this review. Keywords used to collect studies include “fair value” and “IAS 40” or “investment property” and “fair value or “fair value and real estate.” This search yields 33 studies published between 2009 and 2023. Findings The synthesis of reviewed papers suggests that studies were mainly conducted in the European countries after the mandatory adoption of international financial reporting standards (IFRS) in 2005 and the Australian setting. The first stream of research deals with the choice of fair value approach. Reported empirical findings suggest that corporate size and market-to-book ratio are negatively associated with fair value choice, whereas ownership dispersion increases the likelihood of choosing fair value approach. The empirical evidence concerning the determinants of fair value magnitude suggests the type of appraiser represents a key predictor of the extent of fair value use. The second stream of research examines the impact of fair value reporting in real estate industry. Findings suggest that empirical evidence is still limited with respect to creditors, managers and financial analysts; fair value reporting is generally associated with higher level of value relevance for investors; and the use of Level 3 inputs in fair value estimates for investment properties is associated with high degree of estimation uncertainty for external auditors leading to increased audit risk and fees. Practical implications With respect to regulators, this review emphasizes that the beneficial impacts of fair value reporting are linked to institutional characteristics (e.g. legal system, the degree of market development), the reliability concerns regarding fair value estimates and the independence of appraiser. Because real estate industry is generally characterized by the lack of active market, regulators may adopt regulations requiring the independence external appraiser. Originality/value This literature review represents a historical record and an introduction for accounting scholars, in emerging economies and other settings, where fair value accounting has gained wide acceptance among the investment community. It also offers guidance for future research avenues.

Recent Research on the Identification, Assessment, and Response to Fraud Risks: Implications for Audit Practice and Topics for Future Research

SYNOPSIS The financial statement auditor’s identification of fraud risk factors, their assessment of fraud risk, and their fraud risk responses are key to the auditor’s consideration of fraud and fraud detection. Given that the last review of research related to the search for fraud during the audit occurred nearly a decade ago, we provide a summary of recent academic research to update and inform practitioners, researchers, standard setters, regulators, and other stakeholders in the financial reporting process. We categorize and summarize findings from recent academic studies that focus on the auditor’s identification, assessment, and responses to fraud risks. Implications for practice are presented for each of these areas, along with topics and questions for future research. JEL Classifications: M40; M41; M42; M48.

Regional social trust and corporate environmental opportunistic disclosure: evidence from China

ABSTRACT In-depth research on social trust has revealed that it plays a crucial role in economic growth. Regional Social trust has a positive and significant effect on corporate financial information. It remains unknown whether regional social trust has the same effect on the environmental opportunistic disclosure (EOD). EOD is defined as soft information disclosure that is not quantifiable and verifiable. Our study analyzes whether regional social trust negatively affects EOD. Using data from A-share listed companies in China from 2016 to 2019, we find that regional social trust negatively affects EOD. This effect is particularly pronounced in areas with strong economic development, legal systems, and corporations with weak internal controls, strict external audits, and no punishment from environmental supervision. Regional social trust negatively impacts EOD with foreign direct investment as an intervening variable. After conducting robustness checks and an endogeneity test, our findings remain consistent. These findings validate the role of regional social trust in enhancing environmental information disclosure, which contributes to the information transparency of the capital market. Overall, it is essential to continue to improve the credit system and the regulation of environmental information disclosure.

Peripheral Benefit of Single Audit Monitoring in Attracting Charitable Donations

SYNOPSIS Our study examines whether the presence of a Single Audit is positively associated with charitable donations. A Single Audit offers incremental monitoring benefits beyond a basic financial audit. Specifically, it includes additional audit procedures and publicly disclosed reporting on internal controls over financial reporting and on compliance over major programs. In an entropy-balanced sample of 44,364 observations over the period 2010 to 2016, we find that charities subject to a Single Audit receive higher donations, regardless of whether the audit reveals internal control deficiencies. We find similar results when donors are more sophisticated, but not when they are less sophisticated. Finally, our results show donors differentiate between clean and unclean audit findings when deficiencies are defined more strictly as material weaknesses only. Policymakers, charities, and other stakeholders should be interested in the finding that Single Audits, often viewed for their costs, also yield a peripheral monitoring benefit by attracting donations. Cost reduction for upscaling voluntary sustainability standards: the case of independent oil palm smallholders in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia

Upscaling Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) can generate ecological and social benefits at a scale that is meaningful to address pressing environmental issues such as climate change and biodiversity losses. Lack of resources and risks of implementation gaps may, however, hinder the success of upscaling VSS. This paper aims to fill the gap in the literature regarding options to reduce certification costs to upscale VSS amid the limited financial resources available for certification. The paper presents the result of action research involving 3,507 independent oil palm farmers who are members of six farmer groups in two districts in Central Kalimantan to achieve Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification. The research found that achieving economies of scale by increasing the total number of certified farmers can reduce the certification costs per farmer. By establishing a district-level entity, the costs related to audits, RSPO membership fees, and the establishment of farmer groups, such as developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), can be lowered. Implementation gaps were not found with the increase of farmers joining the project based on the training frequency and the external audit findings reports on farmers' compliance with RSPO principles and criteria. The findings of this study provide a basis for promoting the upscaling of VSS, including through the RSPO jurisdictional approach.

La responsabilidad civil y la ética en la inteligencia artificial: una revisión sistemática de las ideas del período 2018-2023

The research reviewed theoretical studies published between 2019 and 2022 on civil liability and ethics in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), analyzing 490 documents from various databases. The need to establish regulatory mechanisms to ensure accountability in the development of AI applications was identified. In response, the implementation of internal and external audits with reports accessible to users is proposed. This would contribute to increasing the reliability of applications, especially those with the potential to impact fundamental rights. The aim of the manuscript is to highlight the importance of these regulatory mechanisms in addressing the ethical and legal challenges associated with the development of AI, thus promoting greater transparency and accountability in this rapidly evolving field.

Do Directors’ Network Positions Affect Corporate Fraud?

Corporate fraud poses a significant obstacle for sustainable business development. Drawing on social network analysis, this paper used data originated from Chinese-listed companies from 2009 to 2022 and found that directors’ network position significantly mitigates corporate fraud. Mechanism tests indicated that the quality of external auditors and internal control play a mediating role in this relationship. Further analysis showed that the network positions of independent directors, non-independent directors, and female directors individually inhibit the inclination of corporate fraud when considering various types of directors. Of note, the busy director hypothesis was not applicable in explaining the impact of directors’ network position on corporate fraud. This study provides a new approach to improving the sustainability of enterprises in newly emerging markets via the analysis of director networks. It is also beneficial to the research on director networks and corporate fraud in companies, offering insights for corporate governance and fraud prevention in companies and regulatory agencies.

Концептуальный подход к проведению аудита финансовой (бухгалтерской) отчетности

The article substantiates the need to develop an audit methodology, which includes strategies and plans, of an economic entity of any industry based on a conceptual approach, which determines the basis on the basic principles and concepts of preparing financial (accounting) reporting, including according to the rules of which jurisdiction the reporting is compiled. Particular attention is paid to the main aspects of the conceptual approach to conducting an audit of financial (accounting) statements. A matrix of conceptual foundations for the formation of a methodology for auditing a commercial organization (jurisdiction: Russian Federation) is proposed. The presented matrix is a comprehensive model and can be used as a combination of various financial reporting concepts. This model is very flexible and can be tailored to the specific wishes and needs of organizations in the design of audit procedures. When accepting an audit engagement (ISA 210), the auditor studies the conceptual framework of financial reporting and compares the purpose and objectives of the audit engagement received and the statements submitted for preliminary examination. The emphasis is on the importance of the auditor understanding the business model of the business entity. At the stage of preliminary work on accepting the audit assignment, the importance of assessing the complex geopolitical situation and the influence of the external environment on the activities of the audited entity is emphasized. To assess the possibility of accepting a new assignment or continuing to perform an assignment that is at the stage of full-fledged work, it is necessary to develop risk assessment criteria and the purpose of assessing each criterion depending on the assessment of the degree of risk of the audited entity in the external environment.

Using Artificial Intelligence in ESG Assurance

ABSTRACT As environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting has become a mainstream channel for companies to communicate their commitment to sustainability issues, the need for reliable and transparent ESG reports is increasing. However, research on ESG assurance is still in its early stages. ESG assurance poses more challenges than traditional financial auditing due to the diverse subjects and types of information in ESG reports. This paper proposes using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and exogenous data as solutions. It discusses how AI can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of ESG assurance by assessing vast and extensive data. This paper also explores AI’s application throughout the general ESG assurance process and contributes to the discussion on providing high-quality ESG assurance services. Additionally, it provides practical implications for auditors, regulators, and stakeholders.

This research aims to find out and test how financial difficulties, debt failure and audit period influence going concern audit opinions on companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2021-2022. The population in this study amounted to 778 companies. The number of samples in this study was 53 samples. This research method uses quantitative methods. The data analysis method used in this research is logistic regression analysis as a data processing test tool. The results of the research analysis show that financial difficulties have an effect on going concern audit opinion, while debt failure and audit period have no effect on going concern audit opinion

Thematic analysis reveals core areas such as policy, earnings management, and the role of external audits, illustrating their interconnectedness within the research community. Temporal trend analysis identifies shifts from regulatory and ethical discussions to more complex issues like technology’s impact on creative accounting practices. Emerging research topics suggest future areas of study, including the influence of cultural perceptions and technological advancements on creative accounting. Furthermore, the author collaboration network highlights influential researchers and suggests robust collaborative ties within the community, offering insights into the social structure of academic collaboration. This study maps the development of creative accounting research, providing a foundation for future academic inquiry and practical application in the field.
