Export performance and direction of major agricultural commodities from Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is India's second-largest economy and its agricultural performance is also significant. The state has been involved in trading of agricultural commodities for many years. In recent years, due to change in export policy of major commodities, it is necessary to measure the performance and direction at state level. Hence, the present study aims to analyze the trends and direction of the trade for selected agricultural commodities from Tamil Nadu. Port-wise export data of the major agricultural commodities from Tamil Nadu were used to assess the export dynamics during 2007-2022. Non-basmati rice, pulses and groundnut were selected for the study based on their significance in the state agriculture as well as in the export trade. The results of the study revealed that the export growth of pulses was the highest among the selected commodities with 21.8% and 28.1% in terms of quantity and value respectively followed by non-basmati with 16.27% and 20.1% in quantity and value terms respectively. However, the growth rate of export quantity of groundnut was negative with -0.1% whereas export value growth was positive with 5.9%. This revealed that export performance of pulses and non-basmati rice was better than groundnut. The Direction of export analysis revealed that Bangladesh and Benin for non-basmati rice, Sri Lanka, China and Singapore for pulses and Sri Lanka and Singapore for Groundnut would be the stable market for export from Tamil Nadu.

The competitive advantages of Sudanese live sheep exporting in export to international market

This study examines factors determining the competitive advantage of live sheep exports from Sudan, assuming Gawad et. al. (2014) model advanced from Porter (1990) Diamond model of competitive advantage of nations. The results of the study showed that sheep production during the period of the study for selected countries are fluctuating, especially Australia it had a high decreasing in production.in recent years. For exports quantities of live sheep noticed that Sudan and Somalia increasing stocks export sheep to the global market, in reverse Australia has a reduction in export quantities especially in current years. The multiple regression showed that R^2 is high 95%,94%93%for Sudan, Somalia, Jordan respectively this is agreed with model expectations. Expect Australia the result shows that R^2 was 78%. The export value in all countries show an unexpected negative significant response to production for Sudan and Australia, insignificant for Somalia and Jordan. On other hand, all selected countries show a positive response to the value of World imports, except Somalia. Export values of live sheep in Sudan show significant positive response to export value of Somalia, in reverse Somalia export value show negative response to Australian export value. This means Somalia is the competitor country for Australia and also for Sudan in spite of its weak contribution in world imports. For all countries, export values positively respond to export quantity indicating prosperous opportunity for growth of export from all selected countries.

Hatay’ın Su ürünleri ihracatını canlandırma yolunda zorluklar: Karşılaştırmalı bir analiz (2008-2023)

A comparative analysis of seafood exports in the Hatay region between 2008 and 2023, in relation to overall trends in Türkiye and different regions, was conducted. Seafood export data was obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute. The export amount has been in a long-term decline fishing and seafood production potential of Hatay, contrary to the general trend in Türkiye. Specifically, the export amount decreased by 62% since 2018, while it decreased by 22.65% in 2023 compared to the previous year. This ongoing downward trend can be attributed to the COVID-19, Syrian civil war, and the recent devastating earthquake in the region. Despite the high potential for seafood production in the region, investments have been limited due to the lack of allocation in organized industrial zones. Additionally, the absence of a wholesale fish market is a major issue preventing the emergence of a regional market. All these factors have caused disruptions in the supply chain and production, increased input costs, and market uncertainties both domestically and internationally. This indicates that infrastructure investments in the region must be prioritized by all stakeholders, the central authority, decisionmakers and policymakers for sustainable seafood exports contributing to regional development. In conclusion, despite the strong industrial and logistics infrastructure in Iskenderun Bay, the seafood sector in Hatay has failed to reach its full potential, unlike the national trend in Türkiye. This shortfall is directly reflected in export values. Therefore, necessary measures must be taken to effectively utilize the region's seafood potential.

Exploring Rice Export Competitiveness in India: A Comparative Analysis of Rice Products

The study examined the export performance and competitiveness of Indian rice using compound annual growth rate and nominal protection coefficient (NPC) and revealed symmetric comparative advantage (RSCA). From 2011 to 2021, there was a significant increase in the export quantity, value, and unit price of basmati and non-basmati rice. NPC results revealed that rice in the husk (paddy or rough), husked (brown) rice, and broken rice were competitive in export. Further, the average NPC for the semi-milled rice category was 1.05, reflecting a lack of competitiveness. RSCA revealed that India has a comparative advantage in rice, including husk (paddy or rough), semi-milled, and broken rice. However, Pakistan has a strong comparative advantage in semi-milled rice (including basmati). Therefore, India must improve its competitiveness with semi-milled rice. India should also take measures to expand its basmati rice export to higher potential markets like Europe and non-basmati rice export to new African countries.

Analysis of factors affecting Indonesian nutmeg export volumes to sustainability of Indonesian nutmeg production

Abstract Indonesia stands as one of the foremost nutmeg exporters universally. Indonesian nutmeg export volume has developed every year. However, the development of Indonesian nutmeg Export amount to leading target countries was still experiencing fluctuating developments. The present study aims are to analysis the comparative advantages of Indonesian nutmeg exports in the global market, to analysis of factors affecting Indonesian nutmeg export volumes to sustainability of Indonesian nutmeg production. This examination engaged panel data using the gravity model and the following methods: Generalized Leapt Square (GLS), Symmetry Revealed Comparative Advantage (SRCA), and Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA). According to the RCA and SRCA analyses, Indonesian nutmeg has a significant competitive advantage in the global market. In the meantime, the exchange rate and the Exporter GDP variable have a positive and considerable impact on nutmeg exports, according to the panel data study. The amount of Indonesian nutmeg exported is significantly and negatively impacted by importer GDP and population. The amount of Indonesian nutmeg exported is positively but marginally impacted by the SRCA and Trade Costs variables.

Analysis of Wheat Export Performance in India

Wheat is a plant which is valued highly for its kernel as an edible part and an important source of carbohydrates. India ranks second position in wheat production in the world with a contribution of roughly 13.53 per cent to global wheat output (Naga Latha et. al., 2022). The study analyses the export performance of wheat and examines the trends in the growth performance of wheat in terms of area, production and productivity, export quantity and export value during 1973-2022 which is a period of 50 years. The analysis reveals that the highest compound growth rate in terms of area was 1.16 per cent, production was 4.49 per cent and productivity was 3.29 per cent respectively. The results of the study on the compound growth rates during the study periods have shown positive and increasing value which indicates high potential for the export of wheat from India. In the analysis of instability, there exists a high positive correlation between the export quantity and value of export in the overall period. Wheat area, production and productivity exhibit higher variability and instability in the overall period. Period II shows lower variability and instability, indicating increased stability. Period I exhibits moderate variability and instability. The overall period has the highest instability, suggesting unpredictable production. Instability indices show high instability at 126.97 per cent in Period I and 138.18 per cent overall, while Period II exhibits moderate instability at 101.94 per cent. Market volatility, trade policies, economic fluctuations, weather patterns and production variability contribute to these fluctuations. As of trend analysis, there is a positive and significant increase. The NPC value of wheat during the overall period was 0.051, it indicates that the commodity is not protected. NPC<1 indicates that the commodity is exportable and possesses export competitiveness and hence the hypothesis i.e. Indian wheat has better competitiveness in the International market.

Indian marine products exports: Growth, instability and geographical diversification

The export of marine products is a significant source of foreign exchange and plays a crucial role in the Indian economy by generating income and employment opportunities. The marine sector contributed 25% (4.13 million t) to the overall fish production in India during the fiscal year 2022-23. The primary objective of this study is to analyse the growth rate, instability, and geographical diversification of marine product exports in terms of both quantity and value. Secondary data related to the major export destinations (Japan, USA, European Union, China, South-East Asia, Middle East and others) and item-wise export (shrimp, finfish, cuttlefish, squid, dried, live, chilled and others) of marine products from India during the period 2000-01 to 2019-20 were collected from the Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA). The growth rate, instability and geographical diversification of exports were estimated using the semi-log regression model, instability index (Ray’s method) and Simpson’s diversity index, respectively. The findings reveal that the overall growth rate of marine product exports over the last two decades was 7.13%. Dry fish exhibited the highest growth rate (15.34%) among all products, and South-East Asia showed the highest growth rate (16.05%) among destinations. However, a significant decline in growth rates of export quantity and value was observed between the two decades for all items, except for frozen shrimp, accompanied by an increase in export instability. The Simpson’s diversity index indicated a significant diversification of 70%, reflecting wide variety of marine products exported as well as the broad range of destination countries. GROWTH TRENDS AND INSTABILITY IN EXPORT OF AGRICULTURAL CROPS FROM INDIA: AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

India is the largest producer and exporter of cereal products in the world. The present paper analyse the growth trends and instability in export of agricultural crops from India with the objectives to examine growth trends and instability in export of agricultural commodities from India and to identify the major destination of India for exporting of agricultural commodities from India. To fulfill the objectives secondary data from 2010-11 to 2023-24 has been utilized for analysis using the statistical tools like Compound Annual Growth Rates, Coefficient of Variation and Cuddy Della Valle’s Instability Index. The study revealed that during the period the export of some commodities in terms of quantity like maize and other cereals show a negative growth rate. In terms of value other cereals also showed negative growth. The export growth rates of foodgrain such as basmati rice, non-basmati rice, wheat and millets are positive in case of quantity. The quantity of export of agricultural cash crops such as coffee, sugar and groundnut has shown positive growth rate while tea, cashew and cotton have shown a negative growth rate. Other cereals have shown the highest instability index value indicating the highest instability and variability among others in both cases quantity and value term. In term of value, cotton has shown the high level of instability index value indicating the highest instability and variability among others. India’s key markets for cereals crops are Saudi Arab, Benin, Vietnam, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Russia and Bangladesh, while cash crops are mainly exported to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Sudan, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Forecasting of Turkey's Hazelnut Export Amounts According to Seasons with Dendritic Neuron Model Artificial Neural Network

It is seen that artificial neural networks have begun to be used extensively in the literature in solving the time series forecasting problem. In addition to artificial neural networks, classical forecasting methods can often be used to solve this problem. It is seen that classical forecasting methods give successful results for linear time series analysis. However, there is no linear relationship in many time series. Therefore, it can be thought that deep artificial neural networks, which contain more parameters but create more flexible non-linear model structures compared to classical time series forecasting methods, may enable the production of more successful forecasting methods. In this study, the problem of forecasting hazelnut export amounts according to seasons in Turkey with a dendritic neuron model artificial neural network is discussed. In this study, a training algorithm based on the particle swarm optimization algorithm is given for training the dendritic neuron model artificial neural network. The motivation of the study is to investigate Turkey's hazelnut export amounts according to seasons, using a dendritic neuron model artificial neural network. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with artificial neural networks used in the literature.

Dynamics of sediment-associated nitrogen export from intermittent streams in subtropical forests of southeast China

The significance of intermittent streams in nutrient loss within forest ecosystems is becoming increasingly critical due to changes in precipitation patterns associated with global climate change. However, few studies have focused on nutrient export from intermittent streams. We conducted continuous sediment collection from intermittent streams from March 2022 to February 2023 to investigate the export pattern and mechanism of sediment-associated nitrogen (N) from intermittent streams of different forest types (composed forest of Castanopsis carlesii (Cas. carlesii) and Cunninghamia lanceolata (C. lanceolata) forests, compared to Cas. carlesii forests). We measured the N concentrations and calculated the export amounts of four common forms of N associated with sediments: total N (TN), dissolved N (DN), nitrate, and ammonia. Our results showed that (1) the annual average exports of TN, DN, nitrate, and ammonia associated with sediments from intermittent streams from both forest types were 273, 1.62, 0.26, and 0.84 kg ha−1, respectively; (2) N export was significantly higher in composite forests of Cas. carlesii and C. lanceolata, compared to Cas. carlesii forests; (3) stream sediment export amount positively affected N export both in composite forests and Cas. carlesii forests; and (4) N export was also controlled by rainfall amount and stream characteristics. Our study quantified sediment-associated N export from intermittent streams among different subtropical forest types, which will enhance our understanding of N dynamics associated with stream hydrological processes in subtropical forests.

Evaluating the Impact of ICDP on India’s Coffee Production, Yield, and Exports

The coffee industry plays a pivotal role in India's agricultural sector, contributing significantly to the country's economy and livelihoods. However, the sector has faced challenges such as fluctuating yields, inconsistent production, and varying export quantities, largely due to biotic and abiotic stress factors. In response, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched the Integrated Coffee Development Project (ICDP) in 2014, aiming to enhance coffee production, productivity, and quality across both traditional and non-traditional growing regions in India. This research paper evaluates the impact of ICDP on coffee production, yield, and exports in India by analysing data from 2008 to 2022. The study adopts an interrupted time series analysis methodology to assess trends in the area under cultivation, production, yield, and export quantities before and after the ICDP intervention. The study period is divided into pre- and post-intervention phases to quantify the effects of the scheme. The results indicate a mixed impact of the ICDP. Traditional coffee-growing areas showed initial increases in production and yield, followed by declines, while non-traditional areas exhibited smaller but more consistent growth. Exports also experienced a temporary decline post-intervention but later rebounded, though at a slower growth rate. The analysis underscores the complexity of agricultural interventions, suggesting that while the ICDP had positive impacts in certain areas, challenges such as climate variability and pest infestations continue to affect the sector's overall growth. In conclusion, the ICDP has contributed to stabilizing and developing India’s coffee sector, but ongoing efforts are needed to address the underlying challenges hindering sustained progress.

A Study of Suitable Forecasting Model for the Export Quantity of Fresh or Chilled Fish in Thailand

The aim of this study was to find a suitable forecasting model for the export quantity of fresh or chilled fish in Thailand using seven statistical methods including Box-Jenkins method, Holt’s exponential smoothing method, Brown’s exponential smoothing method, damped trend exponential smoothing method, simple seasonal exponential smoothing method, Winters’ additive exponential smoothing method, and Winters’ multiplicative exponential smoothing method. The average monthly export quantity from the website of the Office of Agricultural Economics was used for data analysis. The data set used to create the models was the export quantity from January 2011 to December 2020 for 120 months. The data set used to compare the accuracy was the export quantity from January to December 2021 for 12 months using the lowest mean absolute percentage error. The results indicated that the most accurate method was the damped trend exponential smoothing method.

Examining the methods of converting the threats caused by sanctions on Iran’s petrochemical industry to economic opportunities and investigating the growth rate of Iran’s petrochemical industry during sanction

PurposeThis study aims to examine the methods of converting the threats caused by sanctions on Iran’s petrochemical industry to economic opportunities and investigating the growth rate of Iran’s petrochemical industry during sanctions.Design/methodology/approachThe present research was descriptive-exploratory and the research method was based on a mixed research strategy. In the qualitative part, two methods of content analysis and semistructured interview were used and in the quantitative part, the survey method was used. The participants of the qualitative part were the content of all related published researches that have been published in the past 20 years and to conduct a semistructured interview with experts that were selected by nonprobability sampling method. In the quantitative part, the statistical population, there were including managers, supervisors and experts active in the Iran’s petrochemical industry (especially in Asaluyeh area of Iran), the sampling method was nonprobability of the type available.FindingsThe findings of the research showed that the potential risks resulting from the sanctions on Iran’s petrochemical industry from the review of the selected researches include 5 main risks (marketing, financial, supply and procurement, technological and production) and 26 related subrisks. Also, the ranking of the mentioned risks showed that among the main risks, the highest rank is related to the financial risk and among the subrisks, the increase in transaction costs and disruption in the implementation of contractual obligations have the highest rank.Research limitations/implicationsThe investigation of the growth rate of Iran’s petrochemical industry during the sanctions in terms of performance (production, export and foreign exchange) showed that the amount of production has gone through a growing trend during the period under review (it has grown by more than 68%). Also, the amount of exports in the investigated time period has been growing (it has grown by more than 70%) and finally, the amount of foreign exchange in this time period has experienced growth (more than 58% growth).Originality/valueIntroducing and examining methods of turning threats into economic opportunities in Iran’s petrochemical industry under the shadow of sanctions, which can be used in other active industries under sanctions in the energy field.

According to the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation, the amount of funds that have not yet received payment for exports in 2021 is 82 million US dollars (106.6 billion Korean won), and the total amount of accounts receivable in the past five years has reached 1.3 trillion Korean won. According to the Korea Trade Association, although the issuance scale of foreign bonds is increasing, the cumulative recovery rate is as low as around 30%. The average recovery rate of overseas accounts receivable owed by Chinese export enterprises is only 20%. Combined with a 5% export bad debt rate, it basically means that 4% of the annual export amount cannot be recovered. For small and medium-sized enterprises with weak risk resistance, cash flow is crucial for their survival. In general, there are two common ways to obtain compensation for uncollected debts: by purchasing pre export credit insurance or by seeking an ECA agency for agency recovery. The public export credit agencies (ECA) K-SURE and SINOSURE of the two countries are exploring the differences and similarities in overseas bond recovery systems, while hoping to provide better bond recovery methods for small and medium-sized enterprises and help with overseas bond recovery.

Analyzing the impacts of watershed management interventions and scenarios on sediment export reduction in yezat watershed, north west Ethiopia using InVEST model

ABSTRACT This study aimed at assessing the long term impacts of watershed management interventions and scenarios on sediment export reduction in the data-scarce region of the Yezat watershed in north-west Ethiopia. The modified ecosystem services valuation model (InVEST) was employed to evaluate the amount of sediment export in the watershed. Different watershed management intervention scenarios were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of watershed management interventions on sediment export reduction. The results of the study showed that the mean annual sediment yield was 35 tons ha yr in 20000, due to the expansion of cultivated land and built-up area. Conversely, it decreased from 35 ton ha yr in 2000 -18.4 ton ha yr in 2021 due to watershed management interventions. On the contrary, moderate, severe, and very severe categories of sediment export intensity were high in 2000. But it decreased in 2021 due to watershed management interventions. The mean annual sediment export in the baseline scenario (BS) was 35 tons per year, which was reduced to 13.39 tons per year, 3.46 tons per year, and 1.17 tons per year in the reforestation scenario, soil/stone bund, and integrated scenarios, respectively. The result revealed that areas covered by high sediment severity classes were reduced.

The Impact of Export Volatility on Economic Growth in Algeria during 1992-2016: An Econometric Study

Objectives: The issue of export volatility in the economies of less developed countries (LDCs) is a significant topic of debate in economic literature. This paper aims to investigate the potential effect of export volatility on economic performance in Algeria. Methods: The study utilizes an econometric model to estimate the impact of export volatility on economic growth in Algeria for the period 1992-2016. Additionally, another regression model is used to analyze the effects of fluctuations in export prices and quantities on economic growth in Algeria. Results: The findings show that there is no significant relationship between the export instability index and real GDP. Conclusion: The study concludes that fluctuations in the prices and quantities of exports do not influence Algeria’s real GDP. Policymakers should reduce the dependency of the export sector on oil products and improve industrial performance in Algeria. Implementing price stabilization schemes and allocating more oil precautionary funds are also needed to mitigate any possible damaging effects of export volatility on Algeria’s economy in the future.

12th National Ship and Yacht Design Competition Concluded The 12th National Ship and Yacht Design Competition which is organized every year by the Ship, Yacht and Services Exporters Association (GYHİB) has concluded. University designers received their awards at the award ceremony of the competition held this year with the theme "Catamaran Cruise Boat". The project named "HOOPOE" by Yıldız Technical University and Maltepe University students BORA KADIOĞLU, MUHAMMET İNCİ and ÖMER ÖZCAN was deemed worthy of the first prize. Second place went to OĞUZHAN SMART and BURAKCAN YELEK, students of Istanbul Technical University and Maltepe University, with their project named "ELITE". Yıldız Technical University students YASİN KARAKUŞ and HASAN EROĞLU earned third place with their project titled "ZADA". Among the winning designers in the competition, cash prizes of 120 thousand TL were given to the first place, 80 thousand TL to the second place, and 60 thousand TL to the third place. In the jury of the competition; A delegation of 9 professionals, including Bülent Hüseyinoğlu, Prof. Oral Erdoğan, Necdet Salgür, Prof. Mustafa İnsel, Elif Yıldırım Kapucu, H. Bülent Şener, Tanju Kalaycıoğlu, Yusuf Turhan Soyaslan and Esra Özalp, all are the members of TMMOB GMO, took part. The projects were evaluated according to the criteria of innovation, contribution to the sector, applicability, domestic contribution rate, environmentalism and quality of presentation. In National Ship and Yacht Design Competitions, unlike other design competitions, there is a requirement for at least one Naval Architect and Marine Engineering or Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering student to take part in the team. Not only design but also engineering calculations are required from the projects applying to the competition. “Nearly 1000 students participated in the competition, which has been held for 12 years.” In the opening speech of the award ceremony, President of Ship, Yacht and Services Exporters Association CEM SEVEN stated that their goal with the competition is to instill innovation and design culture in young people who are the future of the sector and to bring talented students to the sector, and noted that nearly 1000 students have participated in the competition, which has been held for 12 years. Seven said, “Our workforce quality is our strongest field in international competition. Design is an important concept that is one of the basic elements of the ship and yacht construction industry. With the National Ship and Yacht Design Competitions we have organized every year since the establishment of our Association, we bring together sustainability, innovation, engineering skills and aesthetic elements and try to ensure that our competitors bring a new vision to themselves and our industry. We aim to provide gains in both our workforce and design culture," he said. “By the end of the year, we will be at the top of the sectors that increase exports the most in Türkiye.” Association President Seven evaluated Turkey's ship and yacht exports and stated that GYHİB reached the highest export amount since its establishment in 2010. A Study on the Effect of Imported Wheat Prices on Türkiye’s Pasta Exports: ARDL Approach

Türkiye has possessed significant agricultural opportunities throughout its history. Although the effective utilization of these opportunities is a subject of debate today, the country still plays a significant role in the global trade of some agricultural products. When discussions about Türkiye’s exports are examined, a common complaint is the external dependency of the export industry. However, there are also debates about the diminishing agricultural advantages that have been present since the past. When these discussions are brought together, the trade of certain processed agricultural products, whose raw materials are agricultural products, also becomes a noteworthy research topic due to a similar import dependency. In this study, an analysis was conducted using time series and the ARDL model to investigate whether there is a relationship between Türkiye’s pasta export quantity, as one of the leading pasta exporter’s globally, and the prices of wheat imports from Ukraine, Russia, and Bulgaria. Also robustness checks enhanced the analyzes by employing FMOLS and DOLS methods. The research findings indicate variations in the impact of wheat prices from country to country on the quantity of pasta exported by Türkiye. Recommendations regarding the importance of wheat production in Türkiye are also provided as a result of the research.

Sugar is a strategic commodity that plays an important role. As the primary sweetener, the use of sugar has not yet been completely replaced by other sweeteners. Another essential role can also be seen in the extent of linkages in downstream industries, such as food and beverage, refined sugar, and pharmaceutical industries. This research aims to analyze what factors influence the supply of sugar and the elasticity of the sugar supply in Indonesia. This research uses secondary data in the form of time series data between 1992-2021. The analytical method that will be used quantitative method. The quantitative method uses a simultaneous equation modeling approach, where each equation is estimated using the Two-Stage Least Square (2SLS) method. Data processing in this research was carried out using the Microsoft Excel 2010 and EViews 12. The research results show that the factors that influence the supply of sugar in Indonesia include the amount of production, imports, exports and Indonesian sugar stocks. The amount of Indonesian sugar production is controlled by sugar-cane production and yield, with positive elasticity. Domestic sugar consumption affects the number of Indonesian sugar imports with positive elasticity, while exchange rate and sugar production affect the number of imports with negative elasticity. Domestic sugar prices affect the amount of Indonesian sugar export with negative elasticity, while GDP have a value positive elasticity. Sugar stock is the identity function of the previous year's sugar supply and the previous year's sugar consumption. The total supply of Indonesian sugar is the identity function of sugar production, sugar imports, sugar exports, and year-end sugar stocks.
