SUICIDAL IDEATION AMONG CYBER BULLYING VICTIM COLLEGE STUDENTS

Cyber bullying victims have the most noteworthy paces of suicidal ideation, requiring hypothesis and exploration researching self destruction and its avoidance in later-life. The experience of suicidal ideation is fundamentally connected with discouragement, sadness, negative wellbeing results, and mortality among cyber bullying victims. The research reported in this paper examines the impact of ethnicity, stream and gender on suicidal ideation among cyber bullying victim college students. The data obtained by stratified random sampling was based on three sub-groups of ethnicity (tribal and nontribal), stream (arts and science) and gender (male and female). The sample of 160 students was drawn from different colleges of Ranchi University. Suicidal ideation scaled by Dr Sisodia and Dr Bhatnagar was used to measure level of suicidal ideation. The findings obtained revealed that victims of different ethnicity and stream not differ to each other with respect of suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation of the female victim students is higher than male victim students. It confirms the role of gender effect on the suicidal ideation. No two and three way interaction effect of independent variables was found significant. In general there is a need of further exploration on bigger sample size and distinctive populace.

Suicide ideation as a symptom of adolescent depression. a network analysis

IntroductionAccording to the network perspective, psychopathology is the result of interactions between symptoms. A previous study used network analysis to identify central symptoms of adolescent depression. The aim of the current study was replicate and extend this study by including suicide ideation as a symptom of depression and evaluating which depression symptoms are contributing factors to suicide ideation in adolescents. MethodA large community sample (N = 5,888) of adolescents aged 11–16 years completed the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI-2). Network analysis was used to identify the network structure of the CDI-2 and which symptoms were directly related to suicide ideation in the network. Additionally, the network structure of adolescents who did and did not experience suicide ideation were compared. ResultsResults pertaining the depression network were highly similar to the study we aimed to replicate. The most central symptoms in the depression network were loneliness, sadness, self-hatred, fatigue, self-deprecation and crying. Loneliness explained most variance of suicide ideation. Adolescents who experience suicide ideation had a similar network structure as those who do not. Adolescents with suicide ideation scored higher on all depression symptoms. LimitationsThe use of cross-sectional data indicates that only undirected networks and results based on between-subject data could be estimated. ConclusionsLoneliness was a central factor for depression networks and also the most contributing factor of suicide ideation. Preventative efforts should consider taking experiences of loneliness into account as these are especially prevalent in adolescents. Suicide ideation seems more representative of depression symptom severity in adolescents.

Factors associated with suicidal ideation in patients with multiple myeloma.

Patients with multiple myeloma are at risk of suicide. The study objective was to investigate the clinical risk factors of suicidal ideation among multiple myeloma patients. Consecutive inpatients with a new primary diagnosis of multiple myeloma were recruited. Patients were asked to complete the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to measure suicidal ideation and depression. Patient demographic and biomedical characteristics (age, gender, education, marital status, employment, performance status and cancer stage) and pain and depression scores were analyzed as potential factors associated with suicidal ideation. Of the 79 patients, 10 [12.6% (95% confidence interval: 7-22)] had suicidal ideation. The results of a logistic regression analysis showed that being unmarried, less advanced cancer stage and depression were significantly associated with the presence of suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that a non-negligible proportion of patients with multiple myeloma experience suicidal ideation and that several multidimensional factors are significantly associated.

Professional Burnout Survey for Practicing Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgeons: A Cross-sectional Study.

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of burnout among active practicing members of the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS). This was an anonymous electronic survey of AUGS nontrainee physician members. Basic demographic, personal, and professional characteristics were collected. Levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment, as defined by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey, were utilized to categorize participants into burnout profiles and to determine 2 alternative burnout definitions. Descriptive statistics and models were used to summarize provider characteristics and to explore differences among the burnout profiles. Of the 1039 active members of AUGS, 280 (26.9%) responded to the survey. Burnout profiles were delineated using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey. Forty-three percent fit the Engaged profile, whereas 13% fit the Burnout profile. Significant differences were seen in the distribution of the burnout profiles for physicians who take call (P=0.015), have a current mentor (P=0.016), screen positive for major depression (P < 0.001), experience suicidal ideation (P=0.018), have a feeling of control regarding their schedule (P < 0.001) and those who would become a physician again (P < 0.001). The overall rate of burnout in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery providers was significantly different depending on the definition utilized (P < 0.01) and ranged from as low as 6.5% to as high as 51.9%. There were some differences in respondent characteristics seen among the burnout profiles. The chosen definition of burnout significantly affected the purported rate of burnout, complicating comparisons among provider populations.

Impulsivity, hostility and suicidality in patients diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder

Background: There are limited data on suicidal behaviour in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study aimed to evaluate several aspects affecting suicidality in OCD patients and determine whether impulsivity or hostility are associated with suicide attempts in this vulnerable group.Methods: Eighty-one patients with OCD were assessed by structured clinical interview for DSM-IV (SCID I), Yale-Brown Obsessive–Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), Suicide Probability Scale (SPS), Barratt impulsivity scale-11 (BIS) and Scale for suicide ideation (SSI).Results: Of the 81 patients, 22 (27%) had suicide ideation, 29 (33%) attempted suicides with OCD and 30 (37%) OCD patients who never experienced suicide ideation nor attempted suicide. Suicide ideation was associated with high hopelessness, higher severity of OCD and the presence of aggressive obsessions. On the other hand, suicide attempts were associated with longer duration of untreated illness, cognitive impulsivity, higher severity of OCD symptoms and the presence of religious obsessions.Conclusion: Higher severity of OCD symptoms is associated with both suicide ideation and attempts. And while hopelessness was related to suicidal thoughts, cognitive impulsivity may have acted as a facilitating factor for suicide attempts. Higher frequency of symptoms like religious/ aggressive obsessions was also associated with suicidality. It is vital that patients with OCD undergo detailed assessment for suicide risk.Key pointsOCD is associated with a high risk for suicidal behaviour.Suicide ideation was associated with high levels of hopelessness, OCD severity, and the presence of aggressive obsessions.Suicide attempts were associated with longer duration of untreated illness, cognitive impulsivity, severity of OCD, and the presence of religious obsessions.

What Differentiates Prisoners Who Attempt Suicide from Those Who Experience Suicidal Ideation? A Nationally Representative Study.

Many people who think about suicide do not engage in suicidal behavior. Identifying risk factors implicated in the process of behavioral enaction is crucial for suicide prevention, particularly in high-risk groups such as prisoners. Cross-sectional data were drawn from a nationally representative sample of 17,891 prisoners (79% men) in the United States. We compared prisoners who attempted suicide (attempters; n=2,496) with those who thought about suicide but never made an attempt (ideators; n=1,716) on a range of established risk factors. More than half (59%) of participants who experienced suicidal ideation had also attempted suicide. Violent offending, trauma, brain injury, alcohol abuse, and certain mental disorders distinguished attempters from ideators. Our results fit within recent ideation-to-action theories that emphasize the role of a capability for suicide in the transition from thoughts to acts of suicide.

Religion, spirituality, and suicide risk in Iraq and Afghanistan era veterans.

United States military veterans experience disproportionate rates of suicide relative to the general population. Evidence suggests religion and spirituality may impact suicide risk, but less is known about which religious/spiritual factors are most salient. The present study sought to identify the religious/spiritual factors most associated with the likelihood of having experienced suicidal ideation and attempting suicide in a sample of recent veterans. Data were collected from 1002 Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans (Mage = 37.68; 79.6% male; 54.1% non-Hispanic White) enrolled in the ongoing Veterans Affairs Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center multi-site Study of Post-Deployment Mental Health. In multiple regression models with stepwise deletion (p < .05), after controlling for depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnoses, independent variables that demonstrated a significant effect on suicidal ideation were perceived lack of control and problems with self-forgiveness. After controlling for age, PTSD diagnosis, and substance use problems, independent variables that demonstrated a significant effect on suicide attempt history were perceived as punishment by God and lack of meaning/purpose. Clinical screening for spiritual difficulties may improve detection of suicidality risk factors and refine treatment planning. Collaboration with spiritual care providers, such as chaplains, may enhance suicide prevention efforts.

Suicidal Ideation amongst Medical Students of Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: Thinking, planning or even unsuccessful attempts of suicide come under the definition of suicidal ideation. The risk factor known to be the most important cause for suicidal thoughts is anxiety or feeling stressed, to which medical students are predisposed to due to a wide range of reasons from academics to personal pressures. Objectives: To establish the risk factors and frequency of suicidal ideation amongst medical students. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was done to ascertain the frequency of suicidal ideation and the risk factors causing it in medical students. A questionnaire was formulated and filled by the participants with a 100% response rate. Final data were analyzed with the help of SPSS version 17.0 and the descriptive statistics e.g. percentage and frequencies were calculated. Results: Out of the 250 participants, 84% reported they have depression. 34% of the total students that participated claimed to have suicidal ideation in the previous year. 5.6% reported experiencing suicidal ideation once a week. 7.2% of participants reported that they might be capable of attempting suicide while 4.4% of participants reported that they are definitely capable of committing suicide. Of the total 2.4% reported having attempted suicide while 0.4% reported having attempted suicide more than once in their life. Conclusion: The crux of this research was that the vulnerability of these medical students to feel depressed and experience suicidal ideation is high. The most significant contributor to this trend, as the research explores, is the stress level due to the academic burden that the medical students experience.

The longitudinal association between lifetime mental disorders and first onset or recurrent suicide ideation

BackgroundAlthough the cross-sectional association between mental disorders and suicide ideation is well studied, less is known about the prospective association. In this paper, we estimated among those without 12-month suicide ideation at baseline, the association between a wide variety of common mental disorders at baseline and suicide ideation within the 6-year follow-up period, after controlling for history of other mental disorders and demographic variables.MethodsData were used from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study-2 (NEMESIS-2), a prospective representative adult cohort study with baseline (n = 6646) with a 6-year follow-up period. Lifetime mental disorders were assessed at baseline with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0. Within the longitudinal design, participants with first time or recurrent suicide ideation were defined follows: having no suicide ideation in the 12 months before the baseline assessment, and reporting to have had seriously thought about suicide between baseline and the 6-year follow-up period. Multiple logistical regression was used to estimate the longitudinal association between suicide ideation and a specific mental disorder while controlling for comorbidity and baseline variables. To account for the prevalence of a disorder in the population, for each disorder, the population attributable risk proportion (PARP) was calculated.Results2.9% (n = 132) of the participants that did not report suicide ideation in the past 12 months at baseline reported suicide ideation at follow-up. Of these 132 cases, 81 (61%) experienced suicide ideation for the first time in their lives and could be viewed as first onset cases. 51 (39%) reported recurrent suicide ideation. After controlling for comorbidity, the only two disorders that were significantly related to suicide ideation at follow-up were lifetime major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). PARP for MDD was 47.8 and 16.6% for GAD.ConclusionsAfter controlling for all other mental disorders, a lifetime history of MDD and GAD were related to suicide ideation at follow-up. For clinical practice, this indicates that patients with a history of MDD or GAD stay vulnerable for suicide ideation, even though they did not report suicide ideation in the past year.

Sexual orientation differences in non-suicidal self-injury, suicidality, and psychosocial factors among an inpatient psychiatric sample of adolescents

Within broader community samples, sexual minority adolescents (SMA, e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer) are at greater risk than their heterosexual counterparts for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The present study investigated whether sexual minority orientation continues to confer additional risk for these behaviors in an already higher-risk sample of youth. Frequency and function of NSSI, suicidal behavior, and psychosocial factors were assessed in a sample of 52 adolescents (aged 12–18 years) admitted to an inpatient psychiatric unit due to suicide risk; 27 of them identified as SMA, and 25 as heterosexual (HA). Greater proportions of SMA reported engaging in lifetime NSSI, compared to HA, with a greater variety and frequency of NSSI behaviors and greater endorsement of intrapersonal NSSI functions. SMA reported higher levels of suicide ideation than HA, but not suicidal behavior. Group differences in NSSI and SI persisted when controlling for the greater prevalence of abuse and levels of peer-victimization reported by SMA. In inpatient clinical settings, SMA may be more likely than heterosexual youth to engage in NSSI, including more severe forms, and to experience suicide ideation. Providing alternative coping mechanisms may serve as treatment goals for reducing NSSI in SMA.

Finding purpose and happiness after recovery from suicide ideation

ABSTRACT Although most individuals who experience suicidal thoughts will never attempt suicide and the majority of those who survive a suicide attempt will neither re-attempt nor die by suicide, little is known about salutary outcomes among previously suicidal individuals. The present study examined levels of happiness and meaning in life among 997 US military personnel, of whom 23% had experienced suicide ideation and 4% had made a suicide attempt during their lives. Happiness and meaning in life were significantly reduced among participants with a history of suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors. Happiness and meaning in life were significantly higher among those participants whose last suicidal thought was further in the past. In less than 1 year after their last suicidal thought, the majority of previously suicidal participants reported average to above average happiness and meaning in life.

Association between perceived public stigma and suicidal behaviors among college students of color in the U.S.

BackgroundSuicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students and 10 to 34-year-olds in the U.S. While rates of suicide among young people of color have increased, less is known about factors that contribute to suicidality among racial minority students who are sorely underrepresented within existing research. Thus, we sought to explore the association between perceived public stigma of receiving mental health treatment and suicidality among Black, Asian Domestic, Asian International, Latinx, Multiracial, Arab/Arab American, American Indian/Alaska Native, and White college students. MethodsWe analyzed cross-sectional survey responses from racially diverse sample of 153, 635 college students who participated in the Healthy Minds Study from years 2007–2018. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between perceived public stigma and suicide ideation, suicide planning, and suicide attempt. ResultsPerceived public stigma was significantly associated with greater odds of suicide ideation, planning, and attempt. Odds of having attempted suicide within the past year were significantly greater among Asian International and Black college students. Sexual minority students broadly, and bisexual students specifically, were also at elevated risk for suicidal behavior. LimitationsCross-sectional survey responses were assessed and causality cannot be determined. ConclusionsStudents who endorsed more perceived public stigma also reported significantly greater odds of having experienced suicide ideation, planning, and attempt within the past 12 months. Subsequent interventions should account for concerns surrounding public perceptions of stigma when working to prevent suicide among students of color.

The prediction model of suicidal thoughts in Korean adults using Decision Tree Analysis: A nationwide cross-sectional study.

The purpose of this retrospective decisional analysis study is to develop the prediction model of suicidal ideation. We used a Decision Tree Analysis using SPSS 23.0 program to explore predictors of suicide thoughts for 12,015 Korean adults aged 19–98 years. As a result, the most powerful predictor of suicidal ideation was the level of depression. Of people who suspected depression (CESD-11>16), 32.6% experienced suicidal ideation, which is 12 times higher than that of total subjects. The group with the highest rate of suicidal ideation was people who experienced financial difficulties in depression-suspected group and the rate of suicidal thoughts in this group was 56.7%, which was the highest rate. However, in the non-depressive group, the satisfaction of family relationship was the strongest predictor of suicidal ideation. In the non-depressive group, the rate of suicidal thoughts of people with high level of family relationship satisfaction and high level of health satisfaction was 0.6%, which was the lowest rate. The contribution of this study was that it provided the combination of variables to predict the risk groups of adult suicide. This study suggests that researchers and clinicians should consider comprehensively depressive symptoms, family relationships, economic difficulties, and health status to prevent the suicide of adults.

Association between insufficient sleep and suicidal ideation among adolescents

The objective of this study was to examine the association between insufficient sleep and suicidal ideation among adolescents. Data for this study came from the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. A sample of 13,659 adolescents aged 14–18 years (51.8% female) were analyzed using logistic regression with suicidal ideation as the outcome variable and insufficient sleep as the main explanatory variable. Of the 13,659 adolescents, 2,409 representing 17.6% experienced suicidal ideation during the past 12 months and three out of four adolescents (75.2%) had insufficient sleep on an average school night. Controlling for all other predictors, the odds of experiencing suicidal ideation were 1.35 times higher for adolescents who had insufficient sleep relative to those who had sufficient sleep on an average school night (AOR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.16–1.58). Other factors associated with suicidal ideation include female gender, sexual minority, history of traditional bullying and cyberbullying victimization, feeling sad or hopeless, being slightly or very overweight, and substance use. Physical activity was inversely associated with suicidal ideation. School counselors, clinicians, and practitioners should consider adequate sleep as an important intervention in suicide prevention.

Meaning in life moderates the association between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among U.S. combat veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Effectively responding to suicide risk among veterans involves further developing understanding of reactions to combat experiences, including life-threatening events, traumatic losses, and morally injurious experiences. An important determinant of whether stressors lead to poor mental health outcomes is the perception of meaning. The current study aimed to determine whether global meaning (i.e., general beliefs, goals, and sense of purpose in life) moderates the relationship between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among combat veterans. This analysis examined 564 participants in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of U.S. military veterans, who reported a history of deployment to a combat zone. Multivariable logistic regressions examined interactions between morally injurious experiences and global meaning as predictors of the likelihood of current suicide ideation. There were significant interactions between global meaning and 2 morally injurious experience subtypes-transgressions by others and betrayal experiences. Higher global meaning was associated with significantly lower likelihood of experiencing suicide ideation at higher levels of transgression by others and betrayal experiences. Veterans who report higher levels of morally injurious experiences involving transgressions by others and betrayal experiences in the presence of higher levels of global meaning are significantly less likely to experience suicide ideation. Continued research is needed to determine whether interventions aimed at cultivating global meaning may help mitigate suicide risk in combat veterans with high exposure to certain potentially morally injurious experiences. Detection of Suicide Attempters among Suicide Ideators Using Machine Learning.

ObjectiveWe aimed to develop predictive models to identify suicide attempters among individuals with suicide ideation using a machine learning algorithm. MethodsAmong 35,116 individuals aged over 19 years from the Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey, we selected 5,773 subjects who reported experiencing suicide ideation and had answered a survey question about suicide attempts. Then, we performed resampling with the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling TEchnique (SMOTE) to obtain data corresponding to 1,324 suicide attempters and 1,330 non-suicide attempters. We randomly assigned the samples to a training set (n=1,858) and a test set (n=796). In the training set, random forest models were trained with features selected through recursive feature elimination with 10-fold cross validation. Subsequently, the fitted model was used to predict suicide attempters in the test set. ResultsIn the test set, the prediction model achieved very good performance [area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC)=0.947] with an accuracy of 88.9%. Conclusion Our results suggest that a machine learning approach can enable the prediction of individuals at high risk of suicide through the integrated analysis of various suicide risk factors.

Depression moderates the relationships between hallucinations, delusions, and suicidal ideation: The cumulative effect of experiencing both hallucinations and delusions

Suicide is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide, with symptoms of depression and psychosis relating to increases in risk for ideation, attempt, and completion. This study examined moderating effects of depression in the relationships between three categories of psychotic symptoms (experiencing only hallucinations, only delusions, and both hallucinations and delusions) and suicidal ideation. Data (n = 12,195) were obtained from the cross-sectional Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys data which include large general population-based samples of households in the United States. Data were examined using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in Mplus 8. Approximately 19% of the sample met criteria for major depression and 13% reported having the experience of suicidal ideation. Only 16% of the sample reported having a diagnosis of schizophrenia and/or a psychotic disorder. Depression functioned as a moderator and among those who experienced depression, increases in all psychotic symptom categories significantly related to increased likelihood of experiencing suicidal ideation. Among those who were not depressed, increases in two psychotic symptom categories (only hallucinations and both hallucinations and delusions) were significantly related to greater likelihood of experiencing suicidal ideation. Findings emphasize the high-risk for ideation among individuals who experience hallucinations or delusions, with the cumulative effect of experiencing both hallucinations and delusions being most harmful in relation to the likelihood of experiencing suicidal ideation; particularly so among those who were depressed. Assessment of risk factors for suicidal ideation is imperative given its relationship to the potential of suicide attempt and/or completion.

The construction of people in suicide prevention documents

Suicide is a significant issue worldwide and despite comprehensive prevention activities, suicide stigma remains. To explore this issue, we used critical discourse analysis to examine how Australian suicide prevention documents (n = 8) constructed people living with thoughts of suicide. We found that risk and biomedical discourses dominated, with people experiencing suicide ideation constructed as dangerous, different, lacking coping skills, and burdensome. We propose that future suicide prevention activities address potentially stigmatizing language, broaden support and advocacy options, and meaningfully include people with lived experience of suicidal ideation or behavior in the development of policy and interventions.

A Health Twofer: Nurturing Relationships Are Associated with Lower Odds of Obesity-related Mental Health Comorbidities in Adolescence (P04-173-19)

ObjectivesThis study proposes to identify dietary behaviors associated with two obesity-related mental health comorbidities (depression, and suicidal ideation), and examine whether a nurturing relationship with an adult at school can introduce protective effects against both comorbidities for adolescents. MethodsStudents enrolled in 37 Chicago public high schools participated anonymously in the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Students (n = 1883) were asked about 1) dietary behaviors, such as if they ate fruits and/or vegetables at least once per week, drank milk and/or soda at least once per week, and ate breakfast daily and 2) mental health comorbidities, such as feeling sad or hopeless, or considered attempting suicide within the past year. There was an additional social support question that inquired whether there was at least one adult at the school that the student could consult with about an issue. Overweight or obesity (BMIP > 85th) were estimated using self-reported weight and height. Two sample-weighted logistic regression models, adjusted for physical activity, sleep, sex, age, race, and ethnicity, were used to examine factors associated with the co-occurrence of 1) overweight or obesity with depression, and 2) overweight or obesity with suicidal ideation. ResultsOf the total sample, 13% had co-occurrence of depression with overweight or obesity and 7% were overweight or obese and experienced suicidal ideation. Having a nurturing relationship with an adult in school was associated with lower odds of obesity with comorbid depression (odds ratio (OR): 0.45; 95% confidence interval (CI):0.28–0.70) and lower odds of obesity with comorbid suicidal ideation (OR: 0.35; 95%CI: 0.23–0.52). Odds of obesity with comorbid depression were associated with soda (OR: 5.45; 95%CI: 3.76–7.90), and breakfast intake (OR: 0.32; 95%CI: 0.20–0.51). Odds of obesity with comorbid suicidal ideation were associated with milk (OR: 8.12; 95%CI: 4.77–13.83), and vegetable intake (OR: 3.38; 95%CI: 1.93–5.91), but no other dietary behavior. ConclusionsFurther research is needed to examine the mechanisms through which nurturing relationships with adults at school introduced protective effects against the coexistence of obesity and mental health disorders for Chicago public high students. Examining the association between prescription opioid misuse and suicidal behaviors among adolescent high school students in the United States

Although some studies have examined the association between prescription opioid misuse and mental health outcomes, few studies have examined the effects of prescription opioid misuse on suicidal behaviors among adolescents. The objective of this study was to examine the association between prescription opioid misuse and suicidal ideation, suicide plan, and suicide attempt among adolescents. Data for this study came from the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. A sample of 8830 adolescents aged 14–18 years (50.9% female) were analyzed using logistic regression with suicidal ideation, suicide plan, and suicide attempt as outcome variables and prescription opioid misuse as the main explanatory variable. Of the 8830 adolescents, 13.3% ever misused prescription opioids; 17.7% experienced suicidal ideation, 13.3% made a suicide plan, and 6.5% attempted suicide during the past 12 months. In the multivariate logistic regression models, adolescent students who misused prescription opioids were 1.50 times more likely to have experienced suicidal ideation, 1.44 times more likely to have made a suicide plan, and 1.58 times more likely to have attempted suicide during the past 12 months when compared to their counterparts who did not misuse prescription opioids. Other significant predictors of suicidal behaviors include sexual minority, history of sexual assault, traditional bullying and cyberbullying victimization, feeling sad or hopeless, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug use. The findings of the present study demonstrate the harmful effects of prescription opioid misuse and its association with suicidal behaviors among adolescents.
