This descriptive cross-sectional study surveyed the breastfeeding and human lactation curricular content of accredited nurse practitioner programs in the specialties of family, pediatrics, neonatal, and women’s health. Coverage of educational topics was inconsistent across the 4 types of programs, with significant topic variation. Most programs include general topics such as infant benefits, contraindications, and safe medication use during breastfeeding. Some programs acknowledge that the personal experiences of their faculty may guide what is taught. Reliance on personal breastfeeding experiences may lead to inconsistent coverage of important topics and the possibility of bias in topic selection. A standard curriculum would assist in the provision of consistent, evidence-based content to improve the knowledge and subsequent care of breastfeeding dyads by nurse practitioners across specialties.
