Sustainable Software Development: A Scrum and Kanban Approach

This The ever-increasing demand for robust software solutions requires continuous improvements in software development techniques. Despite the tremendous positive impact software has on society, it is important not to overlook its negative impact on the environment. With climate change becoming more apparent, it is important to understand and address the environmental impacts of software development.This research seeks to explore ways to integrate sustainable development into existing software development methodologies, with a particular focus on Scrum and Kanban. The research basically consists of two parts: a comprehensive review of existing literature to identify solutions and guidelines for sustainable software development,followed by interviews with developers and managers using Scrum and Kanban methodologies on a regular basis. The goal is to assess the sustainability of their practices and identify opportunities for improvement. Through a literature review, a taxonomy of key characteristics recommended for consideration throughout the software development process was established. Combining these factors with the insights gleaned from the interviews, the study aims to propose the enhancement of software-related planning and development within the framework of Scrum and Kanban, thereby providing factors a sustainability has improved.

Dataflow Model–based Software Synthesis Framework for Parallel and Distributed Embedded Systems

Existing software development methodologies mostly assume that an application runs on a single device without concern about the non-functional requirements of an embedded system such as latency and resource consumption. Besides, embedded software is usually developed after the hardware platform is determined, since a non-negligible portion of the code depends on the hardware platform. In this article, we present a novel model-based software synthesis framework for parallel and distributed embedded systems. An application is specified as a set of tasks with the given rules for execution and communication. Having such rules enables us to perform static analysis to check some software errors at compile-time to reduce the verification difficulty. Platform-specific programs are synthesized automatically after the mapping of tasks onto processing elements is determined. The proposed framework is expandable to support new hardware platforms easily. The proposed communication code synthesis method is extensible and flexible to support various communication methods between devices. In addition, the fault-tolerant feature can be added by modifying the task graph automatically according to the selected fault-tolerance configurations by the user. The viability of the proposed software development methodology is evaluated with a real-life surveillance application that runs on six processing elements.

Development of software for effective enterprice product policy creation

The problem of developing a software tool for an effective enterprise product policy creation is considered. Existing methods for an enterprise product policy creation require the execution of a large number of computational operations, and those operations can be processed faster and more accurate by using of personal computers. The object of this research is IT-enterprise which is developing web-applications for automatization of relationships between enterprises and clients. The main point of the work is developing of program tool that uses algorithmic model of information technology for enterprise product policy creation to increase enterprise profitability. During the work, the current state of the problem of enterprise product policy creation, as well as existing software tools that could be used to create the enterprise product policy, were considered. A review of existing software development methodologies was performed. The task about developing of algorithmic model, software tool architecture and program system for enterprise product policy creation was set. The software tool that is developed contains of several functional modules. There are listed algorithms that describe how those modules work. The algorithmic model uses hierarchy analysis method for creation of assortment of product policy and simplex method for solving task of linear programming for calculation of production volumes for chosen products. The functional and non-functional requirements were developed for program, the three-layer software architecture of the web-application was chosen, program code was written, and program system was tested. The graphical user interface was developed and described. The graphical user interface provides users with ability to enter information, which is required for enterprise product policy creation, and retrieve results which are set of products, that enterprise should produce, and volumes of production of those products. The conclusion about results of developing program system and the possibility to use the algorithmic model in future researches were made. The results of the work can be used for development of information technology of enterprise product policy creation.

Towards a New Methodology for Web GIS Development

There has been an increasing need for geospatial information that is delivered through internet technologies. This broad category of systems is referred to as Web Geographic Information Systems (Web GIS). These systems exhibit characteristics common to both stand-alone and web-based systems making it necessary to apply a hybrid methodology during their development. This paper proposes a methodology for developing Web GIS that is herein referred to as the Y-Model Web GIS Development Methodology (YWDM) which has been adapted from existing software development methodologies and applied to the context of Web GIS development. The paper outlines in details the phases of the methodology. Its viability as a methodology has been tested through its use in the implementation of the Emuhaya Web GIS portal. The methodology presented here is not intended to be a rigid guide for web GIS development but instead it provides a useful framework for guiding the process.

Need for Social Media Approach in Software Development

Objective: This paper discusses the need for social media approach in various software development processes to make it more collaborative which will result in increased productivity and better quality of software delivered. Methods/Analysis: To achieve more collaboration in software development, social interface methods are to be used. Usage of Social media methods like tagging, posting and commenting improves the communication among the team members. Findings: Software development typically is carried out by different teams working in different geographic locations and so the need for higher collaboration among teams is important for success of a project. Traditional ways of documenting the requirements, creating test cases, defect tracking have not been modified to leverage the enhanced connectivity that the current generation has. There is a need to create a new method to perform the software engineering tasks in a more interactive way. This will help in leveraging current social media techniques to implement the efficient practices from existing software development methodologies. Applications/Improvements: Collaborative platform can be used in software development, project management and also to evaluate the productivity and performance of a team member.

A New Software Development Methodology for Clinical Trial Systems

Clinical trials are crucial to modern healthcare industries, and information technologies have been employed to improve the quality of data collected in trials and reduce the overall cost of data processing. While developing software for clinical trials, one needs to take into account the similar patterns shared by all clinical trial software. Such patterns exist because of the unique properties of clinical trials and the rigorous regulations imposed by the government for the reasons of subject safety. Among the existing software development methodologies, none, unfortunately, was built specifically upon these properties and patterns and therefore works sufficiently well. In this paper, the process of clinical trials is reviewed, and the unique properties of clinical trial system development are explained thoroughly. Based on the properties, a new software development methodology is then proposed specifically for developing electronic clinical trial systems. A case study shows that, by adopting the proposed methodology, high-quality software products can be delivered on schedule within budget. With such high-quality software, data collection, management, and analysis can be more efficient, accurate, and inexpensive, which in turn will improve the overall quality of clinical trials.

TOWARDS A SERVICE-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT METHODOLOGY

Leveraging a service-oriented paradigm would significantly affect the way people build software systems. However, to achieve this ambitious vision a solid software development methodology should be in place, comprising specific, service-context patterns as well as appropriate supporting tools which altogether integrate methods and best practices into a stable development environment. This paper presents a structured approach to analyzing software development methodologies in light of the specific features of service-oriented applications. The proposed approach is based on a critical assessment of existing software development methodologies along three methodological dimensions, namely managing change in software development, specifying the software development process and targeting the stakeholder goals. For each of this dimension we first identify suitable software methodologies capable to meet the specific challenges and then discuss their contribution towards the definition of a service-oriented development methodology.

Automatically Restructuring Programs for the Web

The construction of interactive server-side Web applications differs substantially from the construction of traditional interactive programs. In contrast, existing Web programming paradigms force programmers to save and restore control state between user interactions. We present an automated transformation that converts traditional interactive programs into standard CGI programs. This enables reuse of existing software development methodologies. Furthermore, an adaptation of existing programming environments supports the development of Web programs.

Towards requirements-driven information systems engineering: the Tropos project

Information systems of the future will have to perform well within ever-changing organizational enviromnents. Unfortunately, existing software development methodologies (object-oriented, structured or otherwise) have traditionally been inspired by programming concepts, not organizational ones, leading to a semantic gap between the software system and its operational enviromnent. To reduce this gap, we propose a software development methodology named Tropos which is founded on concepts used to model early requirements. Our proposal adopts the i organizational modeling framework, which offers the notions of actor, goal and (actor) dependency, and uses these as a foundation to model early and late requirements, architectural and detailed design. The paper outlines Tropos phases through an e-business example, and sketches a formal language which underlies the methodology and is intended to support formal analysis. The methodology seems to complement well proposals for agent-oriented programming platforms.
