Whole-rock PbPb dates of 2860±26 and 2671±18 Ma have been obtained for ferruginous shale of the Madola Member of the Schurwerand Formation, Mozaan Group, Pongola Supergroup and for a magnetitite layer in the Piet Retief Gabbro Suite of the Usushwana Complex, respectively. These results are consistent with some of the existing age data and are interpreted to represent the age of deposition of the Madola Member and the age of emplacement of the Piet Retief Suite. Comparison with existing age data indicates a time lapse of some 120 Ma between the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary lower portion of the Pongola Supergroup (i.e. the Nsuze Group at 2984±3 Ma) and the sedimentary upper part (the Mozaan Group at 2860±26 Ma). After the Mozaan Group was deposited, ca 190 Ma elapsed prior to the emplacement of the Usushwana Complex (at 2671±18 Ma). These new data support a temporal correlation between the Pongola Supergroup and the Witwatersrand Supergroup.
