Instrumentation for Developing and Testing Diesel Engines

Abstract This paper gives a comprehensive idea of the range of Diesel-engine measurements essential to the design of efficient and successful types. Such measurements include accurate power determination, fuel consumption, lubricating-oil consumption, record of crankcase blow-by, exhaust-smoke measurement, all of which are items of performance. In addition, such informative items as pressures attained, rate of pressure rise, combustion analysis, flame duration, exhaust-gas analysis, functions of fuel-injection system, temperature measurements, vibration data, are all essential of determination. Descriptive details are given of the instruments and methods employed in one of the leading Diesel-engine testing laboratories of the country for the determination of these and other Diesel-engine design and operating factors.

An exhaust gas analyser, comprising a plurality of bleeder conduits each discharging to the atmosphere, and arranged in scries relation, the first of which is connected to a preceding exhaust gas conduit between the latter's ends, to bleed therefrom a part only of its flow of exhaust gas, and the last of which is similarly connected between the ends of the preceding one, suction means at the discharge end of each bleeder conduit to draw therethrough the gases bled from the preceding conduit, and analysing mechanism, the last bleeder conduit passing through said analysing mechanism.

During the last few years continuous indicating electric exhaust gas analysers have been coming into use more and more for controlling the strength of the fuel/air mixture which the carburettor feeds into the engine.These instruments have already been described in a publication (vide List of References (i)), but since they are of growing interest, especially for aviation, some further research as to their merits and shortcomings seems to be indicated.Therefore tests have been run with an aircraft type of instrument (the “ Cambridge (N.Y.) Aero Mixture Indicator ”) and an automobile type of instrument (the “ Lantz Phelps Motor Fuel Combustion Tester ” ).
