This article discusses a service that was set up to address the needs of young pregnant women. The multidisciplinary scan clinic has been developed in response to the publication of the Social Exclusion Unit's report on teenage pregnancy in 1999. This report highlighted the prerequisite for improved antenatal care and more responsive services. Teenage Parents: who cares? (Department of Health, 2004a) is another document jointly published by the Department of Health, Royal College of Midwives and Teenage Pregnancy Unit, and is a guide to commissioning and delivering maternity services for young parents. It demonstrates that dedicated staff and services that are designed with the needs of young people at the centre, can alleviate issues such as late booking and poor attendance at antenatal appointments. A number of examples of ‘best practice’ are described in the document including the Multi-agency Young Parents Scan Session that was developed at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
