Excited-State Phase Diagram of a Ferromagnetic Quantum Gas.

The ground-state phases of a quantum many-body system are characterized by an order parameter, which changes abruptly at quantum phase transitions when an external control parameter is varied. Interestingly, these concepts may be extended to excited states, for which it is possible to define equivalent excited-state quantum phase transitions. However, the experimental mapping of a phase diagram of excited quantum states has not yet been realized. Here we present the experimental determination of the excited-state phase diagram of an atomic ferromagnetic quantum gas, where, crucially, the excitation energy is one of the control parameters. The obtained phase diagram exemplifies how the extensive Hilbert state of quantum many-body systems can be structured by the measurement of well-defined order parameters.

Kondo frustration via charge fluctuations: a route to Mott localisation

We propose a minimal effective impurity model that captures the phenomenology of the Mott–Hubbard metal–insulator transition of the half-filled Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice in infinite dimensions as observed by dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). This involves extending the standard Anderson impurity model Hamiltonian to include an explicit Kondo coupling J, as well as a local on-site correlation Ub on the conduction bath site connected directly to the impurity. For the case of attractive local bath correlations (), the extended Anderson impurity model (e-SIAM) sheds new light on several aspects of the DMFT phase diagram. For example, the T = 0 metal-to-insulator quantum phase transition (QPT) is preceded by an excited state QPT (ESQPT) where the local moment eigenstates are emergent in the low-lying spectrum. Long-ranged fluctuations are observed near both the QPT and ESQPT, suggesting that they are the origin of the quantum critical scaling observed recently at high temperatures in DMFT simulations. The T = 0 gapless excitations at the quantum critical point display particle-hole interconversion processes, and exhibit power-law behaviour in self-energies and two-particle correlations. These are signatures of non-Fermi liquid behaviour that emerge from the partial breakdown of the Kondo screening.

Generalized quantum geometric tensor for excited states using the path integral approach

The quantum geometric tensor, composed of the quantum metric tensor and Berry curvature, fully encodes the parameter space geometry of a physical system. We first provide a formulation of the quantum geometrical tensor in the path integral formalism that can handle both the ground and excited states, making it useful to characterize excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPT). In this setting, we also generalize the quantum geometric tensor to incorporate variations of the system parameters and the phase-space coordinates. This gives rise to an alternative approach to the quantum covariance matrix, from which we can get information about the quantum entanglement of Gaussian states through tools such as purity and von Neumann entropy. Second, we demonstrate the equivalence between the formulation of the quantum geometric tensor in the path integral formalism and other existing methods. Furthermore, we explore the geometric properties of the generalized quantum metric tensor in depth by calculating the Ricci tensor and scalar curvature for several quantum systems, providing insight into this geometric information.

Spectral kissing and its dynamical consequences in the squeeze-driven Kerr oscillator

Transmon qubits are the predominant element in circuit-based quantum information processing, such as existing quantum computers, due to their controllability and ease of engineering implementation. But more than qubits, transmons are multilevel nonlinear oscillators that can be used to investigate fundamental physics questions. Here, they are explored as simulators of excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs), which are generalizations of quantum phase transitions to excited states. We show that the spectral kissing (coalescence of pairs of energy levels) experimentally observed in the effective Hamiltonian of a driven SNAIL-transmon is an ESQPT precursor. We explore the dynamical consequences of the ESQPT, which include the exponential growth of out-of-time-ordered correlators, followed by periodic revivals, and the slow evolution of the survival probability due to localization. These signatures of ESQPT are within reach for current superconducting circuits platforms and are of interest to experiments with cold atoms and ion traps.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in the anharmonic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model: Dynamical aspects.

The standard Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model undergoes a second-order ground-state quantum phase transition (QPT) and an excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). The inclusion of an anharmonic term in the LMG Hamiltonian gives rise to a second ESQPT that alters the static properties of the model [Gamito et al., Phys. Rev. E 106, 044125 (2022)2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.106.044125]. In the present work, the dynamical implications associated to this new ESQPT are analyzed. For that purpose, a quantum quench protocol is defined on the system Hamiltonian that takes an initial state, usually the ground state, into a complex excited state that evolves on time. The impact of the new ESQPT on the time evolution of the survival probability and the local density of states after the quantum quench, as well as on the Loschmidt echoes and the microcanonical out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) are discussed. The anharmonity-induced ESQPT, despite having a different physical origin, has dynamical consequences similar to those observed in the ESQPT already present in the standard LMG model.

Phase transitions of the anisotropic Dicke model

We systematically analyze the various phase transitions of the anisotropic Dicke model that is endowed with both rotating and counter-rotating light-matter couplings. In addition to the ground state quantum phase transition (QPT) from the normal to the super-radiant phase, the anisotropic Dicke model also exhibits other transitions namely the excited state quantum phase transition (ES- QPT), ergodic to non-ergodic transition (ENET) and the temperature dependent phase transition. We show that these phase transitions are profitably studied not only with the standard consecutive level spacing ratio, but also with the aid of various eigenvector quantities such as von Neumann entanglement entropy, the participation ratio, multifractal dimension and mutual information. For ENET, both the statics and dynamics of the participation ratio offer a consistent and useful picture. An exciting finding from our work is that the ESQPT and the ENET are closely related to each other. We show this with the aid of two characteristic energies in the spectrum corresponding to jumps in von Neumann entropy.

Mechanism of dynamical phase transitions: The complex-time survival amplitude

Dynamical phase transitions are defined through nonanalyticities of the survival probability of an out-of-equilibrium time-evolving state at certain critical times. They ensue from zeros of the corresponding survival amplitude. By extending the time variable onto the complex domain, we formulate the complex-time survival amplitude. The complex zeros of this quantity near the time axis correspond, in the infinite-size limit, to nonanalytical points where the survival probability abruptly vanishes. Our results are numerically exemplified in the fully connected transverse-field Ising model, which displays a symmetry-broken phase delimited by an excited-state quantum phase transition. A detailed study of the behavior of the complex-time survival amplitude when the characteristics of the out-of-equilibrium protocol change is presented. The influence of the excited-state quantum phase transition is also put into context.

Theory of Dynamical Phase Transitions in Quantum Systems with Symmetry-Breaking Eigenstates.

We present a theory for the two kinds of dynamical quantum phase transitions, termed DPT-I and DPT-II, based on a minimal set of symmetry assumptions. In the special case of collective systems with infinite-range interactions, both are triggered by excited-state quantum phase transitions. For quenches below the critical energy, the existence of an additional conserved charge, identifying the corresponding phase, allows for a nonzero value of the dynamical order parameter characterizing DPTs-I, and precludes the main mechanism giving rise to nonanalyticities in the return probability, trademark of DPTs-II. We propose a statistical ensemble describing the long-time averages of order parameters in DPTs-I, and provide a theoretical proof for the incompatibility of the main mechanism for DPTs-II with the presence of this additional conserved charge. Our results are numerically illustrated in the fully connected transverse-field Ising model, which exhibits both kinds of dynamical phase transitions. Finally, we discuss the applicability of our theory to systems with finite-range interactions, where the phenomenology of excited-state quantum phase transitions is absent. We illustrate our findings by means of numerical calculations with experimentally relevant initial states.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions and Loschmidt-echo spectra in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Identifying dynamical signatures of excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) in experimentally realizable quantum many-body systems is helpful for understanding the dynamical effects of ESQPTs. In such systems, the highly controllable spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) offer an exceptional platform to study ESQPTs. In this work, we investigate the dynamical characteristics of the ESQPT in spin-1 BEC by means of the Loschmidt echo spectrum. The Loschmidt echo spectrum is an extension of the well-known Loschmidt echo and defined as the overlaps between the evolved state and the excited states of the initial Hamiltonian. We show that both the time-evolved and long-time-averaged Loschmidt echo spectrum undergo a remarkable change as the system passes through the critical point of the ESQPT. Moreover, the particular behavior exhibited by the Loschmidt echo spectrum at the critical point stands as a dynamical detector for probing the ESQPT. We further demonstrate how to capture the features of the ESQPT by using the energy distribution associated with the Loschmidt echo spectrum for time-evolved and long-time-averaged cases, respectively. Our findings contribute to a further verification of the usefulness of the Loschmidt echo spectrum for witnessing various quantum phase transitions in many-body systems and provide a different way to experimentally examine the dynamical consequences of ESQPTs.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate and criticality enhanced quantum sensing

Quantum phase transitions universally exist in the ground and excited states of quantum many-body systems, and they have a close relationship with the nonequilibrium dynamical phase transitions, which however are challenging to identify. In the system of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates, though dynamical phase transitions with correspondence to equilibrium phase transitions in the ground state and uppermost excited state have been probed, those taking place in intermediate excited states remain untouched in experiments thus far. Here we unravel that both the ground- and excited-state quantum phase transitions in spinor condensates can be diagnosed with dynamical phase transitions. A connection between equilibrium phase transitions and nonequilibrium behaviors of the system is disclosed in terms of the quantum Fisher information. We also demonstrate that near the critical points parameter estimation beyond the standard quantum limit can be implemented. This work not only advances the exploration of excited-state quantum phase transitions via a scheme that can immediately be applied to a broad class of few-mode quantum systems, but also provides a new perspective on the relationship between quantum criticality and quantum enhanced sensing.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in the anharmonic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model: Static aspects.

The basic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model displays a second-order ground-state quantum phase transition and an excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). The inclusion of an anharmonic term in the Hamiltonian implies a second ESQPT of a different nature. We characterize this ESQPT using the mean field limit of the model. The alternative ESQPT, associated with the changes in the boundary of the finite Hilbert space of the system, can be properly described using the order parameter of the ground-state quantum phase transition, the energy gap between adjacent states, the participation ratio, and the quantum fidelity susceptibility.

Comment on “Revisiting the phase transitions of the Dicke model”

In the work of Das and Sharma [Phys. Rev. A 105, 033716 (2022)] the phase transitions of the Dicke model are studied. Its main result is that, besides the well-known quantum phase transition, excited-state quantum phase transition and thermal phase transition exhibited by the model, there exists an upper bound energy, $E_{*}$, beyond which the model ceases to exhibit quantum chaotic behavior and the structure of the eigenfunctions changes. Based on this finding, a number of well-established results about the Dicke model are called into question. We argue that this result and all its consequences are spurious numerical effects resulting from an improper truncation of the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space necessary for numerical diagonalization.

Spin-nematic squeezing for dynamical quantum phase transitions in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

We study spin-nematic squeezing in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate and use it to probe dynamical quantum phase transitions. We show that the quench dynamics of the spin-nematic squeezing exhibits a nonanalytical change with respect to a final quadratic Zeeman energy, and demonstrate that the squeezing detects not only the ground state phase diagram, but also the excited state quantum phase transition. We further analyze the dynamic stabilization of the system and present its relation to the dynamical quantum phase transitions. Our results are applicable to the spinor condensates with both of the sodium and rubidium atoms.

Deformation in 92−128Pd isotopes

The purpose of the study further explores the quadrupole transition rates and effective deformation within the framework of a simple interacting boson model to the Pd isotopic chain. We used the spherical U(5) and deformed O(6) dynamical symmetry limits. Results indicate a significant relationship between the effective quadrupole deformation values and effective boson charge. Results suggest that 106Pd is a good candidate for the E(5) critical point of the U(5)-O(6) shape phase transitional region and also has the largest variation of the quadrupole shape constants. A close relationship between the ground- and excited-state quantum phase transitions is found, as evidenced by the ratios of different energy levels.

Dynamical and excited-state quantum phase transitions in collective systems

We study dynamical phase transitions (DPTs) in quantum many-body systems with infinite-range interaction, and present a theory connecting the two kinds of known DPTs (sometimes referred to as DPTs-I and DPTs-II) with the concept of excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT), traditionally found in collective models. We show that DPTs-I appear as a manifestation of symmetry restoration after a quench from the broken-symmetry phase, the limits between these two phases being demarcated precisely by an ESQPT. We describe the order parameters of DPTs-I with a generalization of the standard microcanonical ensemble incorporating the information of an additional conserved charge identifying the corresponding phase. We also show that DPTs-I are linked to a mechanism of information erasure brought about by the ESQPT, and quantify this information loss with the statistical ensemble that we propose. Finally, we show analytically that DPTs-II are forbidden in these systems for quenches leading a broken-symmetry initial state to the same broken-symmetry phase, on one side of the ESQPT, and we provide a formulation of DPTs-II depending on the side of the ESQPT where the quench ends. We analyze the connections between various indicators of DPTs-II. Our results are numerically illustrated in the infinite-range transverse-field Ising model and are applicable to a large class of collective quantum systems satisfying a set of conditions.

Exceptional spectral phase in a dissipative collective spin model

We study a model of a quantum collective spin weakly coupled to a spin-polarized Markovian environment and find that the spectrum is divided into two regions that we name normal and exceptional Liouvillian spectral phases. In the thermodynamic limit, the exceptional spectral phase displays the unique property of being made up exclusively of second order exceptional points. As a consequence, the evolution of any initial density matrix populating this region is slowed down and cannot be described by a linear combination of exponential decays. This phase is separated from the normal one by a critical line in which the density of Liouvillian eigenvalues diverges, a phenomenon analogous to that of excited-state quantum phase transitions observed in some closed quantum systems. In the limit of no bath polarization, this criticality is transferred onto the steady state, implying a dissipative quantum phase transition and the formation of a boundary time crystal.

Energy cat states induced by a parity-breaking excited-state quantum phase transition

We show that excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) in a system in which the parity symmetry is broken can be used to engineer an energy-cat state -- a Schr\"odinger cat state involving a quantum superposition of both different positions and energies. By means of a generalization of the Rabi model, we show that adding a parity-breaking term annihilates the ground-state quantum phase transition between normal and superradiant phases, and induces the formation of three excited-state phases, all of them identified by means of an observable with two eigenvalues. In one of these phases, level crossings are observed in the thermodynamic limit. These allow us to separate a wavefunction in two parts: one, with lower energy, trapped within one region of the spectrum, and a second one, with higher energy, trapped within another. Finally, we show that a generalized microcanonical ensemble, including two different average energies, is required to properly describe equilibrium states in this situation. Our results illustrate yet another physical consequence of ESQPTs.

A theoretical study on the effective quadrupole deformations of 100−128Cd isotopic chain

In this paper, we have applied a simple interacting boson model (IBM) to Cadmium (Cd) isotopic chain to obtain the quadrupole transition rates and effective deformation. To this aim, we use the U(5) and O(6) dynamical symmetry limits of this model to classify the considered states. Also, the energy spectra of some levels are determined which their experimental counterparts are available. The results describe the regular states with high accuracy but suggest notable deviation in the prediction of intruder energy levels. Also, our results show the advantages of this formalism in the description of quadrupole transition rates and indicate a significant relationship between the values of effective quadrupole deformations and effective boson charge. Also, for the [Formula: see text]Cd, [Formula: see text]Cd and [Formula: see text]Cd isotopes, we have the largest variation of the quadrupole shape constants which are located in the region of shape coexistence. The study of the ratios of different energy levels indicates that there is a close relationship between ground and excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs).

Floquet time crystals in driven spin systems with all-to-all p -body interactions

We show the emergence of Floquet time crystal (FTC) phases in the Floquet dynamics of periodically driven $p$-spin models, which describe a collection of spin-1/2 particles with all-to-all $p$-body interactions. Given the mean-field nature of these models, we treat the problem exactly in the thermodynamic limit and show that, for a given $p$, these systems can host various robust time-crystalline responses with period $nT$, where $T$ is the period of the drive and $n$ an integer between 2 and $p$. In particular, the case of four-body interactions ($p=4$) gives rise to both a usual period-doubling crystal, and also a novel period-quadrupling phase. We develop a comprehensive framework to predict robust subharmonic response in classical area-preserving maps, and use this as a basis to predict the occurrence and characterize the stability of the resulting mean-field FTC phases in the quantum regime. Our analysis reveals that the robustness of the time-crystal behavior is reduced as their period increases, and establishes a connection between the emergence of time crystals, described by eigenstate ordering and robust subharmonic response, and the phenomenology of excited state and dynamical quantum phase transitions. Finally, for the models hosting two or more coexisting time crystal phases, we define protocols where the periodic subharmonic response of the system can be varied in time via the non-periodic modulation of an external control parameter.
