Combining machine learning with physics: A framework for tracking and sorting multiple dark solitons

In ultracold-atom experiments, data often comes in the form of images which suffer information loss inherent in the techniques used to prepare and measure the system. This is particularly problematic when the processes of interest are complicated, such as interactions among excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In this paper, we describe a framework combining machine learning (ML) models with physics-based traditional analyses to identify and track multiple solitonic excitations in images of BECs. We use an ML-based object detector to locate the solitonic excitations and develop a physics-informed classifier to sort solitonic excitations into physically motivated subcategories. Lastly, we introduce a quality metric quantifying the likelihood that a specific feature is a longitudinal soliton. Our trained implementation of this framework, soldet, is publicly available as an open-source python package. soldet is broadly applicable to feature identification in cold-atom images when trained on a suitable user-provided dataset.

Quantum Landau damping in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider Landau damping of elementary excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with dipolar interactions. We discuss quantum and quasi-classical regimes of Landau damping. We use a generalized wave-kinetic description of BECs which, apart from the long range dipolar interactions, also takes into account the quantum fluctuations and the finite energy corrections to short-range interactions. Such a description is therefore more general than the usual mean field approximation. The present wave-kinetic approach is well suited for the study of kinetic effects in BECs, such as those associated with Landau damping, atom trapping and turbulent diffusion. The inclusion of quantum fluctuations and energy corrections change the dispersion relation and the damping rates, leading to possible experimental signatures of these effects. Quantum Landau damping is described with generality, and particular examples of dipole condensates in two and three dimensions are studied. The occurrence of roton-maxon configurations, and their relevance to Landau damping is also considered in detail, as well as the changes introduced by the three different processes, associated with dipolar interactions, quantum fluctuations and finite energy range collisions. The present approach is mainly based on a linear perturbative procedure, but the nonlinear regime of Landau damping, which includes atom trapping and atom diffusion, is also briefly discussed.

Many-body effects in the excitation spectrum of weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates in one-dimensional optical lattices

In this work, we study many-body excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in periodic one-dimensional optical lattices. In particular, we investigate the impact of quantum depletion onto the structure of the low-energy spectrum and contrast the findings to the mean-field predictions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. Accurate results for the many-body excited states are obtained by applying a linear-response theory atop the MCTDHB (multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons) equations of motion, termed LR-MCTDHB. We demonstrate for condensates in a triple well that even weak ground-state depletion of around $1\%$ leads to visible many-body effects in the low-energy spectrum which deviate substantially from the corresponding BdG spectrum. We further show that these effects also appear in larger systems with more lattice sites and particles, indicating the general necessity of a full many-body treatment.

Phonon-Josephson resonances in atomtronic circuits

We study the resonant excitation of sound modes from Josephson oscillations in Bose-Einstein condensates. From the simulations for various setups using the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field equations and Josephson equations we observe additional tunneling currents induced by resonant phonons. The proposed experiment may be used for spectroscopy of phonons as well as other low-energy collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. We also argue that the observed effect may mask the observation of Shapiro resonances if not carefully controlled.

Discrete breather and soliton-mode collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates in a deep optical lattice with tunable three-body interactions

We have studied the dynamic evolution of the collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates in a deep optical lattice with tunable three-body interactions. Their dynamics is governed by a high order discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation (DNLSE). The dynamical phase diagram of the system is obtained using the variational method. The dynamical evolution shows very interesting features. The discrete breather phase totally disappears in the regime where the three-body interaction completely dominates over the two-body interaction. The soliton phase in this particular regime exists only when the soliton line approaches the critical line in the phase diagram. When weak two-body interactions are reintroduced into this regime, the discrete breather solutions reappear, but occupies a very small domain in the phase space. Likewise, in this regime, the soliton as well as the discrete breather phases completely disappear if the signs of the two-and three-body interactions are opposite. We have analysed the causes of this unusual dynamical evolution of the collective excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interactions. We have also performed direct numerical simulations of the governing DNLS equation to show the existence of the discrete soliton solution as predicted by the variational calculations, and also to check the long term stability of the soliton solution.

Coupling vortex dynamics with collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

Here we analyze the collective excitations as well as the expansion of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex line at its center. To this end, we propose a variational method where the variational parameters have to be carefully chosen in order to produce reliable results. Our variational calculations agree with numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system considered here turns out to exhibit four collective modes of which only three can be observed at a time depending of the trap anisotropy. We also demonstrate that these collective modes can be excited using well established experimental methods such as modulation of the s-wave scattering length.

Rydberg Excitations in Bose-Einstein Condensates in Quasi-One-Dimensional Potentials and Optical Lattices

We experimentally realize Rydberg excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates of rubidium atoms loaded into quasi-one-dimensional traps and in optical lattices. Our results for condensates expanded to different sizes in the one-dimensional trap agree well with the intuitive picture of a chain of Rydberg excitations. We also find that the Rydberg excitations in the optical lattice do not destroy the phase coherence of the condensate, and our results in that system agree with the picture of localized collective Rydberg excitations including nearest-neighbor blockade.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates near Feshbach resonance in external potential

We review our recent theoretical advances in the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interactions using Feshbach resonance and external potential. A set of analytic and numerical methods for Gross-Pitaevskii equations are developed to study the nonlinear dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates. Analytically, we present the integrable conditions for the Gross-Pitaevskii equations with tunable interactions and external potential, and obtain a family of exact analytical solutions for one- and two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in one and two-dimensional cases. Then we apply these models to investigate the dynamics of solitons and collisions between two solitons. Numerically, the stability of the analytic exact solutions are checked and the phenomena, such as the dynamics and modulation of the ring dark soliton and vector-soliton, soliton conversion via Feshbach resonance, quantized soliton and vortex in quasi-two-dimensional are also investigated. Both the exact and numerical solutions show that the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates can be effectively controlled by the Feshbach resonance and external potential, which offer a good opportunity for manipulation of atomic matter waves and nonlinear excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional periodic potential

We report on the experimental investigation of the response of a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the presence of a one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice. By means of Bragg spectroscopy we probe the band structure of the excitation spectrum in the presence of the periodic potential. We selectively induce elementary excitations of the BEC choosing the transferred momentum and we observe different resonances in the energy transfer, corresponding to the transitions to different bands. The frequency, the width and the strength of these resonances are investigated as a function of the amplitude of the 1D optical lattice.

Spacetime analog of Bose-Einstein condensates: Bogoliubov–de Gennes formulation

We construct quantum field theory in an analog curved spacetime in Bose-Einstein condensates based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations by exactly relating quantum particles in curved spacetime with Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. Here, we derive a simple formula relating the two, which can be used to calculate the particle creation spectrum by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. Using our formulation, we numerically investigate particle creation in an analog expanding universe which can be expressed as Bogoliubov quasiparticles in an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate. We obtain its spectrum, which follows the thermal Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the temperature of which is experimentally attainable. Our derivation of the analogy is useful for general Bose-Einstein condensates and not limited to homogeneous ones, and our simulation is an example of particle creations by solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation in an inhomogeneous condensate.

Short-time Enhancement of the Decay of Coherent Excitations in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study, both experimentally and theoretically, short-time modifications of the decay of excitations in a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) embedded in an optical lattice. Strong enhancement of the decay is observed compared to the Golden Rule results. This enhancement of decay increases with the lattice depth. It indicates that the description of decay modifications of few-body quantum systems also holds for decay of many-body excitations of a BEC.

Davey-Stewartson description of two-dimensional nonlinear excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study nonlinear modulation of collective excitations in disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates with a repulsive interatomic interaction. Using a method of multiple scales we show that the nonlinear evolution of a wave packet, formed by the superposition of short-wavelength excitations, and a long-wavelength mean field, generated by the self-interaction of the wave packet, are governed by Davey-Stewartson (DS) equations. Consequently, two-dimensional soliton (dromion) solutions can develop and propagate. We further derive a set of DS equations with variable coefficients for the situation where a slowly varying trapping potential in transverse directions has been taken into consideration. Finally, the dromion solutions and their stability are investigated by numerical simulations.

Colloquium: Bulk Bogoliubov excitations in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Bogoliubov theory for excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates was formulated over 50 years ago to qualitatively explain strongly interacting superfluids. Quantitative experimental verification of this theory came with the long-awaited realization of gaseous, weakly interacting condensates. This Colloquium reviews recent experimental advances in the study of Bogoliubov bulk excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates, obtained using two-photon Bragg scattering.

Collapse and revival of excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the energies and decay of elementary excitations in weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates within a finite-temperature gapless second-order theory. The energy shifts for the high-lying collective modes turn out to be systematically negative compared with the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov approximation and the decay of the low-lying modes is found to exhibit collapse and revival effects. In addition, perturbation theory is used to qualitatively explain the experimentally observed Beliaev decay process of the scissors mode.

Observation of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates.

The occurrence of phase fluctuations due to thermal excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is studied for a variety of temperatures and trap geometries. We observe the statistical nature of the appearance of phase fluctuations and characterize the dependence of their average value on temperature, number of particles, and the trapping potential. We find pronounced phase fluctuations for condensates in very elongated traps in a broad temperature range. The results are of great importance for the realization of BEC in quasi-1D geometries, for matter wave interferometry with BECs, as well as for coherence properties of guided atom laser beams.

Photonic band gaps and defect states induced by excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is confined in an optical lattice, with a largely detuned light field propagating through the condensate. If the condensate is in its ground state it acts as a periodic dielectric and gives rise to photonic band gaps at optical frequencies. The band structure of the combined system of condensed lattice-atoms and photons is studied by using the concept of polaritons. If elementary excitations of the condensate are present, they will produce defect states inside the photonic band gaps. The frequency of localized defect states is calculated using the Koster-Slater model.

Collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates in triaxially anisotropic parabolic traps

The wave equation of low-frequency density waves in Bose-Einstein condensates at vanishing temperature in arbitrarily anisotropic harmonic traps is separable in elliptic coordinates, provided the condensate can be treated in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We present a complete solution of the mode functions, which are polynomials of finite order, and their eigenfrequencies which are characterized by three integer quantum numbers.

Bogoliubov Quasiparticles Carried by Dark Solitonic Excitations in Nonuniform Bose-Einstein Condensates

We consider the noncondensate part of the Bose gas in presence of dark solitons. We get a stationary equation of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and find that these Bogoliubov quasiparticles are confined by a dark soliton and carried to propagate with it. This model of the compound structure of the soliton and Bogoliubov quasiparticles provides more precise description of localized sound excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Phase collapse and excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates

A study of fragmented condensates is presented to elucidate the interplay between excitations and the collapse of relative phases within single condensates. Implications for experimental observation of interference between weakly coupled condensates are discussed, and means for computation are suggested and applied to a one-dimensional model system.

Semiclassical analysis of collective excitations in Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the low-lying excitations of Bose-Einstein condensate of confined alkali-metal atoms, with repulsive interaction. Vortex excitation energy of the condensate containing a large number of atoms is estimated semiclassically. We also investigate the asymptotic form of the low-energy quasiparticle excitation of the condensate in the presence of a vortex, in the large-N limit. The dispersion relation remains the same as that of a condensate without a vortex, except the z component of angular momentum of the modes is shifted by the angular momentum of the vortex. The first-order correction of the energy eigenvalues due to finite-size effects is calculated.
